Kids set the example for adults

By Mandy ELLIS LUKE and Sophie Stanhouse came across some fishing wire whilst taking a stroll to Shoal Bay beach recently.

Sophie spotted the fishing line which then resulted in a family effort to remove it from the rocks where it was jammed.

Mum, Kate Stanhouse said, “Both children were insistent that we had to remove it and put it into the bin.”

Sophie told her mum,

“We have to move it because it will kill some of the animals.”

Sophie, a keen gymnast said, “I am very sad that people leave rubbish on our beach and do not take it home to put in their bin.”

Both children are very aware of how sensitive the ocean and its inhabitants are and how people are not really taking care anymore.

Luke, 9 years of Nelson Bay, is a passionate basketball player, is learning guitar and both children are regulars at Fingal Beach SLS Little Nippers.

Entrepreneural Passion Alive in the Bay

By Jewell DRURY CORLETTE resident Amanda Douglass, a Bay local of 23 years, understands the true meaning of Entrepreneur.

Passionate, humble and down to earth, Amanda is a rarity in the industry.

Amanda’s boundless energy and passion is contagious and spending time with her is invigorating.

Ms Douglass has been a chef in the industry for the past 30 years, starting her own business here in the Bay, 10 years ago.

The youngest of three girls, cooking competitions with her sisters, prompted the encouragement of Amanda to become a chef.

At 17 she became an apprentice chef and over the years worked her way through the ranks.

Amanda worked at the Ramada Renaissance Hotel and later at the

infamous Grand Hyatt.

After moving to the Bay, Amanda was chef at The Anchorage Port Stephens and felt that this was the pinnacle of her career.

Working with up to 80 chefs in Sydney, a smaller crew at The Anchorage allowed Amanda’s creative flair and expression an outlet.

She later took up the more relaxed position as breakfast chef at the Shoal Bay Promenade, where it was easier to juggle her family commitments after having her four children.

After this time, Amanda warrants her husband Andrew’s constant belief and encouragement of her, giving her the courage to branch out into her own business.

“Andrew has always been absolutely amazing and always encouraged me 110%, I couldn’t do this without him,” Ms Douglass told Bay News Of The Area.

It’s been full steam ahead since those early days and has now seen Amanda attach a custom built commercial kitchen to her home where she now creates her delectable menus.

AFFF was regarded as the most effective method to fight fires as the foam blanketed and stuck to the fire, starving it of oxygen.

The chemicals contained in AFFF are not biodegradable and it has been found that they can move from soil to groundwater causing contamination.

These chemicals have a half-life in the human body of more than 20 years.

“I know many men who I worked alongside of, who now have cancer or have lost their battles to similar cancers,” Geoff Zipper told Bay News Of The Area.

“We were previously told that Asbestos was a safe product, and we later found out the dangers,” Mr Zipper said.

“My fear is that Aqueous fire fighting foam is the new ‘asbestos’, and that we will have to wait for

CORLETTE Resident Geoff Zipper started his career as a NSW Fireman 30 June 1970 until he was medically retired due to bladder cancer in 2006.

Mr Zipper soon started asking questions when he heard that AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam), the foam used to put out fires was deadly.

The two chemicals used in AFFF, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) had both been linked to kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, pregnancy-induced hypertension and medically diagnosed high cholesterol in humans.

These chemicals have been used to make firefighting foams in Australia for more than 50 years.

“There are no globally accepted peer review studies showing that exposure to PFOS and PFOA affects human health,” a Defence spokesman said.

Mr Zipper’s concern isn’t about compensation, but rather speaking out for the health and welfare of his former workmates, the firemen who were exposed to these chemicals.

“It’s about doing right by the people who have been exposed to these chemicals and looking after them and their families,” Mr Zipper said.

Saturday 24 September Baylife Church Women hosted a very unusual event.

It was the result of fundraising events throughout the year from which $2000 was raised to fund the provision of 400 Birthing kits to be sent to Northern Uganda.

Unlike mothers in Australia who are able to give birth in

These birthing kits are basic but clean can save lives.

“I love that women who do not attend our church came along too,” Pastor Robyn McKewin told Bay News Of The Area.

“Anyone can be a part these events, friends of friends, anyone in the community who would like to make a difference to the world around them,” Pastor McKewin said.

The birth kits were packed in cartons and will be sent to Northern Uganda to be distributed by World Vision Health Workers who will also train the local staff in health care.

Included on the day was a Ladies Clothes swap and funds raised will go towards funding a community wedding in the Philippines in April 2017.

Dead or injured koalas on road

By Mandy ELLIS WITH National Koala Month over and so much excellent media coverage on koalas every week, your new Bay News Of the Area thought it would be appropriate to deliver just one story.

The Hunter Koala Preservation Society (HKPS) is a very busy volunteer organisation.

They are the first point of contact to assist injured and sick koalas and are also the volunteers who attend koala fatalities.

Sue Swain, who has been volunteering for 13 years, currently has Dexter 2½ and Doro who is 6 years in her care.

Initially, Sue became involved when she answered an ad in the local press, stating, “I thought it would be nice to play with the koalas.”

“It’s now the pleasure of rescuing an injured koala and seeing it through to the release stage.”

Dexter was hit by a car and along with internal bruising, he also sustained a broken leg and has had titanium plates inserted to assist with the repair.

Courtesy of Noah’s Ark Veterinary Services, Dexter will have his plaster cast removed in two weeks and will then commence the next phase of recovery, which will take a further 6 weeks.

After Sue has supported Dexter through the final stage with her, he will be transferred to a dedicated rehab home.

At the rehab home he will spend around one month re-learning to climb and regain muscle strength in his right leg.

HKPS is passionate about the need for a local koala hospital where injured koalas and orphaned joeys could be cared for and nurtured back to health with the intent of releasing them into the koala community when they are ready.

Bad road funding Shoal Bay – the installation of traffic lights at the intersection

FOUR major road safety projects will be implemented in Port Stephens this financial year, thanks to successful funding applications under the Federal Black Spot Program and the NSW Government Safer Roads Program.

The Black Spot Program is part of the federal government’s commitment to reducing crashes on

Australian roads, with projects selected based on the number and nature of incidents recorded at each location.

Council crews will undertake improvement projects at Glen Oak, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay and Tanilba Bay. Civil Projects Engineer, Rick Mackenzie said the programs aim to improve identified problem areas with targeted

safety upgrades.

“Council works closely with the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) and local police to identify recurring themes in traffic incidents as well as investigating how infrastructure improvements can meet the needs of the community.

“Our team has worked hard to develop applications and design treatments, all aimed at improving public safety,” he said.

The proposed works identified as blackspots have been recently approved by the Federal Department of Roads and Infrastructure,

Originally from Smokey Town, near Ballarat, Melbourne, they are spending some relaxing time in Nelson Bay before heading to Gin Gin, Queensland, where they will take possession of their new wheels.

Sammi told News Of The Area, “We are going to install solar panels on our new 32 foot 1981 Bedford bus so we can live as independently as possible.”

New Domestic Violence laws are now allowing some

parents to make bogus claims of abuse in order to restrict access by the other parent to their children prior to family law proceedings.

With these new laws, no evidence is needed to make a claim of abuse or violence.

Mr Lore told News Of The Area, “The current system is set up to favour the mothers who often manipulate the system to become the custodial parent for either financial gain or simply to maintain a level of control over the noncustodial parent’s life.”

Story of Father and kids

SHOAL Bay resident Keith Lore finds it hard to wake up each day.

Keith has not seen his two small children in just over 18 months since he and his wife separated more than 2 years ago.

He attends court next month for the third ‘mention’ in what he describes as a costly long haul in an attempt to have regular access to his children.

After separation, often the plight of Fathers having relationships with their children withheld from them, goes unnoticed.

In a time where new laws are being passed every day in regards to women’s rights,

administered by the NSW RMS. Mr Mackenzie said detailed designs are being carried out and works expected to begin shortly.

“With the recent approval, we’re now able to begin the necessary design and planning work to have each of these projects completed this financial year.

“We’ll be coordinating works around the busy holiday period and be communicating directly with businesses and residents in the immediate area of the works,” he said.

• Salamander Bay - the provision of an acceleration lane and improvements to the delineation of the intersection of Salamander Way and Town Centre Circuit.

Deputy was unopposed victor COUNCILLOR Chris Doohan will continue as Deputy Mayor following his reelection at Tuesday’s Council meeting.

Cr Doohan was elected to the role unopposed for a 12 month period – pending an announcement on a proposed amalgamation with Newcastle City or Dungog Shire Council.

“It’s an interesting time for local government in NSW and unfortunately at the moment, Port Stephens are caught in the crosshairs of major reform,” Cr Doohan said.

“I’ve enjoyed working with Mayor MacKenzie and my fellow Councillors in the Deputy Mayor role over the last 12 months.

“I’m excited at the opportunity to continue

building on the great platform we’ve set – for however long that may be.”

Mayor Bruce MacKenzie welcomed the re-election of his deputy from the 2015 term.”

Greens not happy about sale, nor Washington!

THE Greens are calling for urgent reforms to the Crown Lands Act to require public agencies to assess the ecological and other values of public lands before selling them.

This follows Parliamentary Secretary Scot Macdonald’s statement on ABC radio this week in relation to the recent sale of part of the Mambo Wetlands at Salamander Bay. Six hectares of the wetlands were sold in June for $250,000 to a property developer.

Greens MP and Planning spokesperson David Shoebridge told News Of The

Area, “The sale of part of the Mambo Wetlands is evidence of system failure where ecologically valuable public land is sold for development with no assessment of its value. That has to end.”

Mr Shoebridge said, “Proper community consultation and assessment would have told the Government of the value of this land and seen 6 hectares of prime koala habitat protected in public ownership, rather than sold for just $250,000.”

“It should not be up to the community to run campaigns to save land that so obviously

should be protected for its biodiversity value.”

“At the very minimum the sale of any publicly owned land should follow appropriate consultation with key agencies like OEH, but also with the community to produce a comprehensive understanding of the land’s ecological, social or other value,” he said.

Clans on the Coast

THE recent gathering of the Clans at Nelson Bay saw Major Stephen Buchanan carry the Chieftain’s Sword for the Day. The sword is presented to the incoming Chieftain whose name will subsequently be engraved on the sword.

Major Buchanan said, “This gathering is an opportunity to explore, discover, talk about and celebrate our heritage.”

“As I was a Buchanan before marriage, we felt it prudent to check our family heritage to make sure we were not close relatives,” said Carolyn Buchanan.

Famous for making Scottish tablet, Mrs Buchanan likes to share with all of the other clans and vendors at clan gatherings.

“I feel it creates a community feeling and it’s a great way to get to know other clans,” she said.

When asked about the recipe, Mrs Buchanan said, “It’s an old Scottish recipe.”

People travel from across Australia to attend the gatherings, all wearing their tartans with pride.

“If you are going to do something, you have to go the whole hog,” Jo Baxter, Buchanan Clan said.

The activities and demonstrations were exhilarating, Celtic and Highland dancers, Celtic choir, Scottish and Celtic bands, caber toss, tug of war to name a few.

died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, when King James IV was killed.

George Buchanan, the famous Latin scholar, humanist, reformer and tutor to Mary Queen of Scots was born near Kilearn in 1506.

The Clan took part in the Battle of Pinkie in 1547 and the Battle of Langside in 1568.

The succession from Anselan was uninterrupted to John Buchanan, the 22nd Laird who died in 1681.

Along with his death the Title “of that Ilk” expired and since then the Chiefship has been dormant.

Ten years after the Jacobite Rebellion in 1715 the Buchanan Society was formed and it remains the oldest such society in Scotland.

Famous Composer and Conductor, a regular

By Jewell DRURY OUR Blue Water Wonderland of Port Stephens attracts an array of visitors to our shores every year.

The past week brought about a chance meeting and introduction to Mr Lee Bracegirdle.

Lee had stopped to view a Koala that had chosen to perch itself snugly in the branches of a gumtree overhanging Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay. Lee Bracegirdle and his family have holidayed in Shoal Bay for more than three decades.

Who is Lee Bracegirdle I hear you ask?

Lee Bracegirdle is an Australian – American Composer, Horn player and Conductor, best known for his compositions that have been

performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Lee has held positions as Principal Horn in Orchestras on 3 Continents spanning more than three decades.

His Career as a Composer began in 1998 as winner of the Kodaly Composer’s Competition, followed by numerous commissions and requests for new works from his orchestral colleagues.

As a conductor, Lee trained at Salzburg’s Mozarteum.

In New York he freelanced with the New York City Symphony Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Philharmonia.

“We love this area and we have been coming up every year for just over 30 years,” Mr Bracegirdle told Bay News Of The Area.

“My Mother- in- law Heidi flies, over from Bavaria each year and always makes sure that we have Port Stephens on the agenda,” said Lee. This talented man has won

numerous awards over the span of his career.

Since 1996, Lee has been Musical Director and Composer in Residence of the Australian Chamber Ballet and he appears frequently as guest conductor with many Sydney based ensembles.

2014, as guest conductor of the ‘Orquesta Sinfonica de Oriente, saw Mr Bracegirdle become the first Australian to conduct in Cuba and the first Australian Composer to perform there.

Although now retired Lee still guest conducts in Australia and Latin America.

He resides in Sydney and his many compositions are published by C.F.Peters.

This beautiful area of ours attracts diverse and unique people who have lived interesting lives just like Lee Bracegirdle.

Narelle has decided to plan her final assessment, within the grounds of the Yacaaba Centre, Nelson Bay. A centre close to her heart.

Narelle said, “I know of many who have benefitted from the wonderful, supportive and understanding staff at the centre.”

“I am thinking of those people who have lost their fight with depression leading to suicide.”

“Therefore, the focus on the memory garden is to raise awareness in the community of the Yacaaba Centre’s service so that suicide may be prevented and those who struggle in other ways know where they can get assistance.”

The Yacaaba Centre is for both men and women of all ages.

“Having the garden renovated will make a big difference, and will make it easier when we are speaking with children as there will be things to look at and talk about.”

“Staff and the general community will benefit from the tranquil setting Narelle

is trying to create for us,” one staff member said.

Narelle is asking the community for sculptures, totems, murals/painting services, and local tradies to help build a pergola.

It would also be very helpful if we could have volunteers to help tidy up the garden.

“Apart from helping a great organisation, those who are able to donate will have their work on permanent display,” Narelle said.

The tranquil garden will be for the entire community, not just for clients of the Yacaaba Centre.

A place where anyone can go to meditate, reflect and relax.

Narelle would love to see more landscaping in the area and hopes to make this her full time career.

By Jewell DRURY YOU may have heard of ‘Eat Pray Love’ but we have our very own Run Walk Eat Wine every month here in Nelson Bay. Nelson Bay Harriett’s was founded 8 years ago by Shoal Bay resident Clare Van Doorn.

The group is an independent offshoot of ‘Hash House Harriers’ which originated in 1938, when a group of British Colonial Officers and expatriates began meeting to

run and rid themselves of the previous weekends excesses.

The original goals included promoting physical fitness, to rid weekend hangovers, to acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it with a wine or beer and to persuade the older members that they were only as old as they felt.

“I first came up with the idea because I was meeting a lot of women who had recently moved to the bay area, and looking for a social connection,” Clare Van Doorn

told Bay News Of The Area.

“I had the perfect way to connect them through a run/ walk, a meal together and a glass of wine,” Ms Van Doorn said.

Anywhere in the world you will find that every night there is a Hash Harrier Run taking place.

The once a month get together here in the Bay, usually draws 20 – 40 local women with ages ranging from 18- 69 years old.

Encouraged to apply for Sports funding Organisations may apply for one project per project type SPORTING clubs in Port Stephens are encouraged to apply for the Local Sport Grant Program to guarantee increased involvement in recreational activities.

Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, said sport and active recreation delivers many personal and community benefits including developing self-esteem, maintaining health and fitness, nurturing talented athletes and contributing to individual enjoyment of life.

“Investment in local sport and recreational facilities will encourage greater participation in sporting activities and support a stronger and healthier community,” Ms Washington said.

The NSW Government has allocated $50,000 for projects within the Port Stephens electorate and incorporated, not-for-profit sport clubs are eligible to apply.

There are four project types within the

Program: • Sport Development (up to $2,000); • Community Sport Events (up to $5,000); • Sport Access (up to $5,000); and • Facility Development (up to $20,000) The minimum amount available is $250 for all project types with the exception being for facility development which has a minimum request of $1,000.

Organisations may apply for one project per project type. The maximum available to any one organisation is $25,000 in a financial year. The amount organisations request should reflect the scale of the project.

Great connection at Probus Club

By Jewell DRURY THE Probus Club of Port Stephens is a mixed gender membership base for retired or semi-retired singles and couples who enjoy fun, friendship and fellowship.

Probus is a worldwide organisation that originated in the United Kingdom in 1965.

The first Probus Club in Australia was formed in 1976.

Nelson Bay has its very own vibrant and active community of Probus members.

By Jewell DRURY IT’S SPRING time and a solitary Mulberry Tree awaits the neighbourhood children.

Many of us have fond childhood memories of a simpler time of climbing trees, picking and eating to our hearts content, with only the purple stains on our fingers and lips giving us away.

At the end of Foreshore Drive Salamander Bay, stands the old faithful Mulberry Tree full of mulberries.

Late Spring and early

Summer will see the tree heavy with ripened fruit.

Local Resident, Enid Frame has seen four decades of children climb the tree and feast on the delectable berries.

“My daughter was only 7 when we moved to the area and she would sit in that tree with her friends for hours to just eat and talk,” Mrs Frame told Bay News Of the Area.

“It wasn’t unusual for her to bring home 2-3 buckets filled to the brim,” Enid said.

Over the years the Mulberry tree has been trimmed and is now only half the size it once was but it still promises to deliver a bounty of sweetness to all those who visit.

Typically, the colour is a blackish purple so wait until the fruit is fully ripened before you eat it.

FRESH skid marks, hooning and the demise of the 50km sign have been the last straw for mum of 3, Heidi Rhodes of Bagnalls Beach Road, Corlette.

Mrs Rhodes faces the awful prospect of crossing Bagnalls Beach Road to meet her son off the school bus along with her 3 year old and newborn baby on a daily basis.

Mrs Rhodes said, “Even when you are crossing the road, baby in the pram and a child beside me, cars come around the roundabout so quickly, they do not slow down and many times, they continue accelerating.”

only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

“There are children going home from school on their pedal bikes and cars drive so fast around them, way more than the 50km zone along this road,” she said.

“We have regulars, you can hear them way before you see them and each night at a certain time, we hear the duff duff music, then the wheel spins,” said Mrs Rhodes.

We fear for not only the children’s safety, but we also have a large percentage of elderly people living in this area.

It is simply unsafe.

Taking a walk along the road together with Mrs Rhodes and her two youngest

children, you do not have to go far before skid marks are evident on both the roads leading to and on the roundabout.

What is making matters worse is there are several homes being renovated along this road making walking with some degree of safety on the council strip impossible and forcing Mrs Rhodes and her young children onto the road.

Mrs Rhodes would like Council to install speed humps along Bagnalls Beach Road, keeping in line with other surrounding roads and reduce the speed in which drivers can travel.

Majestic Old Gentleman Falls

RECENTLY the Tomaree Peninsula saw the end of an era.

The huge old rope swing tree on Wanda Beach is no more.

The Majestic old gentleman held many a local in his branches, nurturing us through our childhood as well as our children’s, grandchildren and great

grandchildren’s.

He stood tall, looking over Wanda Beach and out toward the heads over many decades.

Many a story can be heard from the saddened community as they pay tribute to the old tree that overlooked the Wanda Beach Strip from as far back as the early 1950’s.

Every morning and afternoon saw people visiting the rope swing tree.

In summer time, it was not unusual to see local and visitors to the area, lined up to have their thrill, taking the rope into their hands, swinging high over the water.

Last year a huge storm saw some damage to the tree and its lean become more prominent.

Wanda strip locals reported the damage to the council and the old tree recovered to live another

season.

Two weeks ago, it was again reported to council that a crack had appeared in the root system.

On Thursday morning, neighbours heard lots of giggles as they watched a mother and her two children swinging from the tree into the soft sand below, The family soon left, completely unaware of what would soon occur.

BAYNews Of The Area An hour later, a huge thud was heard as the grand old gentleman fell to the ground.

He held himself upright till the end, allowing this young family to be the last to swing from his huge old limbs.

“We were taking our normal morning walk and couldn’t believe that it had fallen,” locals Mike and Carol Lewis told News Of The Area.

“We will miss seeing the beautiful old tree, it was fortunate that no one was hurt when it fell,” said Mrs Lewis.

In today’s world of economic and technological progress it is easy to forget that it’s often the simple things in life that really matter.

There was nothing like holding that old rope between your hands and launching yourself excitedly over the water, reminding you that nothing else mattered except for the ’here and now.’

FRIDAY 23 September, saw students graduate from Year 12 at Salamander Bay’s St Philip’s Christian College.

It was a memorable morning which saw the Chris Walking Theatre packed to capacity.

A special mention of gratitude was made by Vice School Captain, Callum Sinclair for the indelible mark that Founding School Principal, Mr Chris Walking had left on the students over their years at St Phillips.

Mr Walking passed away suddenly just over 4 years ago and left behind a huge legacy in the lives of many in our community.

The day included many awards being presented, new school captains being sworn in, as well as the opening of a time warp capsule by students who were in the Kindergarten classes of 2004.

Face painting brings smile

JUDI Walker has been living in the Tomaree area for just over 18 years.

You will see her at most community events as a ray of sunshine with an infectious smile.

Originally from the ‘The Shire’ in Sydney, she resettled in the Bay with two of her three sons, Elliott and Tobias.

Judi was the brainchild of “Kid’s Fun Centres” a mobile children’s entertainment company which brought

children’s activity centres into shopping centres, conferences and conventions.

Ms Walker worked as a Marketing Manager in events and entertainment for many organisations including the tourist and historic precinct The Rocks, Sydney.

Soon after, Judi started a small business called ‘Clown Rascalls’ which was an interactive show in shopping centres and arcades.

Forming her own company called, ‘Walker Marketing’ she organised children’s shows,

fashion parades and the like all over Sydney.

From public relations, marketing and tourism to being a professional singer/dancer/actor, Judi’s achievements are many.

Judi is well known in the Bay area for her volunteer work at Food Care at the Rock church as well as her tireless work helping more than 40 charities.

A fully qualified theatrical makeup artist for NIDA in film, television and photography led Judi to her most well known position to date.

“As I painted children’s faces I became hooked,” Ms Walker told News Of The Area.

On arrival at wharf at Tea Gardens before 9 am we were told 9am/9.30am ferry is cancelled, come back for 10 am.

Finally arrived at Nelson Bay after 11am and were told of ferry times for return which we selected 1.30pm.

Huon Aquaculture What happened to the Ferry?

Huon Aquaculture will bring one of the floating sea pens just inside Tomaree, off the Boulders, to install netting.

Dear News Of The Area, THE installation of the mooring grid for sea pens for Yellowtail Kingfish is proceeding well on the Marine Aquaculture Research Lease in Providence Bay. Cardinal markers and much of the grid have been installed in preparation to receive two sea pens,

currently constructed and moored in Newcastle Harbour.

Huon Aquaculture will bring one of the floating sea pens just inside Tomaree off the Boulders in the coming week to install netting.

In consultation with RMS and Marine Parks, a temporary mooring will be placed on sandy sea bed in around 7 metres of water.

MY family and I were in Hawks Nest visiting for the 1st week of the school holidays.

On Thursday 29 September I decided to take the family,( myself, my wife and 3 children) to Nelson The mooring consists of two flat-bottomed cylindrical concrete blocks (3 tonne each) approximately 40 metres apart.

The mooring will be in place from 8 October to 18 October, and Huon will remove it as soon as the works are completed.

One sea pen will be towed from Newcastle directly to the Research Lease.

The other sea pen will come through the heads to the Boulders, providing a more sheltered location to rig the nets before it is towed out to Providence Bay. Subsequent sea pens for the research lease will

Customers are the ferries business. Timetables printed with times of ferries should be adhered to regardless.

The Port Stephens Pictorial, years later we sold to the Raymond Terrace Examiner who eventually sold to the Newcastle Herald.

The first newspaper in the bay was the Port Stephens Times by a Mr Barnard (his son was, or still is an electrician in the Bay.) the next owner was a Wally Caldwell who later sold to Fred Causon, later it closed down, mainly because a newpaper “The Port Stephens Gazette” started.

It was run by Tom Barras, an “A’ class ‘Jurno’.

RECENTLY our Shoal Bay Strollers walking co-ordinator was awarded NSW Local co-ordinator at The Golden Shoe Awards.

Nominations flowed in from all over the country to the Heart Foundation.

During the judging Cathy Diamonds nomination was a stand out in the NSW category.

It was declared a marvellous achievement for the time in the role, and testimony to her diligence and perseverance to not only start but develop and maintain a successful walking group.

The aim of the free walking group is to provide an accessible, friendly, relaxed environment for people who are trying to move more.

This has been shown to help improve symptoms of osteoarthritis in the joints and prevent heart disease. At the same time meeting new people in the beautiful outdoors of Shoal Bay. The Shoal Bay Pharmacy initiated the walking group under Cathy’s lead and hopes that more and more people join up and enjoy the walk that starts at the pharmacy each Tuesday and Friday morning at 7.00am.

NELSON Bay resident Ben Eick of LJ Hooker Home Loans Hunter has taken home the title of World Champion Home Loans Consultant at LJ Hooker’s Annual International Awards night held recently in Cairns.

Fishing Club’s $5000 gift for the Bay SPORTS

By Jewell DRURY A GREAT afternoon was had recently as members of the Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club gave back to their local community.

“This year the club has really taken off and we are ready to start giving back to the community by way of donations to local charities and groups who need help,” Warren Leadbeatter told Bay News Of The Area.

“Members nominate a charity or group they would like to donate to and the committee signs off on who they think are the most needy and worthy,” Mr Leadbeatter said.

This year, Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club raised $5000 and donated all of the money to local charities.

Three charities received a cheque for $1250, presented on Sunday afternoon at the Clubs monthly meet.

Taurie Lalor, President of

the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group thanked the Club for their generosity.

The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group do not receive any financial grants from the government or agencies and rely solely on their own fundraising events and donations from other clubs and organisations.

“The generosity of the Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club is greatly appreciated,” Taurie Lalor told Bay News Of The Area.

“The donation will be used to help breast cancer patients who are residents on the Tomaree Peninsular,” said Ms Lalor.

Anna Bay Public School P&C representative Renee Thompson, Josh Street and Narelle Robertson from Lifestyle Solutions and Firefighter, Chris Glen from Anna Bay Rural Fire Brigade were also thrilled with the cheques that were presented to them on the day.

people to “get out there” and “have fun”.

We now have over 150 members from the local community as well as people from all over Australia.

Membership is open to singles, couples, families and children, developing

community spirit whilst enjoying our paradise which is often taken for granted.

On the last weekend of every month a fishing weekend is held where members are encouraged to go out fishing from 3 pm Friday until Midday on

Sunday.

A weigh in is held at Anna Bay Tavern on the Sunday from 12pm to 2pm where points and prizes are awarded for biggest fish & most fish caught Mens, Womens and Junior divisions, lucky door prizes and a free members BBQ lunch. Points are tallied throughout the year for the Annual Presentation Function where awards and prizes are also awarded for club champions.

There is also a Christmas Party and a weekend away

fishing event held each year.

Anna Bay Tavern supports the Fishing Club by way of providing the venue for the club’s monthly committee meetings, annual functions, monthly fishing competition weigh ins and fundraising events. e.g Friday Night Joker Poker & Meat Tray raffles & Thursday Night Seafood Raffles.

Each year we give back $5000 to the local community by way of donations to local charities and groups who need help with their

fundraising.

This years beneficiaries each received a cheque for $1250.00 the first being Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group represented

by Taurie Lalor.

The second was Anna Bay Public School P&C represented

by Renee Thompson. The third was Lifestyle Solutions represented by Josh Street and Narelle Robertson and lastly, Anna Bay Rural Fire Brigade represented by Chris Glen.

Nelson Bay Football Club Awards Day

SATURDAY 17 September saw the Nelson Bay Football Club’s (NBFC) annual awards presentation for the Junior Interdistrict Competition Teams.

Twelve teams from U12s to U18s play in the Junior league and of these, four made it through to the grand final - the U12Girls C, U13Cs, U14As and U14Girls B. The U14Girls won their Grand Final 4-1, a wonderful achievement.

The Nelson Bay FC has over 600 players playing in an impressive 59 teams, from U6s to the Senior teams.

The U6s and 7s play locally in the Tomaree area whilst the other teams play in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and across the Hunter.

A club spokesperson said that the season had gone very well.

ANNIVERSARY time for Marcel and Nicole Le Grange as they celebrate their first year as owners of SportsPower, Salamander Bay. Marcel and Nicole are long term residents of the Bay and are actively involved in the sporting community in a variety of ways.

The staff at SportsPower are a talented lot.

They have a wealth of knowledge in relation to multiple sporting codes.

Sophie Balcombe 19, of Anna Bay, who plays for grand final winners, Nelson Bay Marlins, has just been awarded the Most Outstanding AFL Young Football Player at BDAFL. Sophie has also recently applied for the GWS Draft.

Sophie said, “As women’s league progresses and develops I hope to make it a full time career.”

Brie Carter 19, of Nelson Bay, plays Oz-Tag with Port Stephen’s Bandits and also Country Bulls at the Australian Titles in Coffs

Harbour in November.

This is the third time she has competed with them.

Brie said, “I am excited about the growth of local Oz-Tag in both the juniors and seniors.”

“It is awesome having more teams being taken away to State comps every year.”

Caiden and Kobe Le Grange, 18 and 12 years respectively, are both winners in the Hockey Grand finals this year and play in the Nelson Bay Hockey competition.

Marcel has been involved in the local rugby scene for over 25 years as well as touch football and hockey.

He has played many disciplines of sport over the years and has a broad range of knowledge.

Trent Chadwick, has worked at the store for the past 10 years, has a wealth of sporting knowledge and also plays for Nelson Bay Soccer.

“It is important to get kids involved in sports,” Nicole said.

“It is an essential part of a child’s development and we are proud to be involved with this.”

Mr Johnston is a member of Newcastle Neptunes Spearfishing Club, the oldest and largest spearfishing club in Australia.

Joining Neptunes is a great way to meet others who spearfish, to share knowledge and gain skills, to explore new spots in the Bay area and to join in on trips away.

“The Neptunes club holds a Neptune Challenge Cup which is a great competition where the largest speared of the ten species of fish listed is awarded,” said Mr Johnston.

According to Kyle there are some great spots to dive here in the Port Stephens area.

His favourite spots for spearing are Boat Harbour for Brim and Lobster in Winter as well as Broughton Island in Winter for Snapper.

“You will find lots of Kingfish off Broughton Island in the Summer,” Kyle said.

Fingal Bay Bomboras LAST month hundreds of Bay locals make their way to Harker Oval, New Lambton to watch the local Fingal Bay Bomboras play West Wallsend in this year’s Grand Final.

As the final whistle blew, the Score Board announced the Fingal Bay Bomboras victors with a 28 – 24 win.

This Grand Final win is the first for the Bomboras in 19 years.

By Annie TOLHURST NELSON Bay Touch Association (NBTA) sent 6 Senior teams to the Hunter/Western Hornets Championships over the last weekend in Maitland.

Defending Regional champions Senior Mixed went down in a nail biting grand final against Doyalson 5 to 7 and Women’s 30 also defending Champs were defeated by Wallsend 0 to 6 after losing some key players to injury.

Our Men’s 40’s team stepped up again this year to meet defending Regional and State Champs Wallsend in the grand final.

Held their own for half the game but eventually going down to a very strong side with current Australian players 5 to 7.

Our Men’s 20’s team played hard and strong through all their round games.

This year we have some

young boys stepping up to take on the bigger boys and having lost two players before the tournament the boys did very well to finish a very reputable 5th in the Region.

Our Men’s opens took on the big guns and fought hard throughout.

Again due to some injuries during the tournament left their numbers on the low side but the remaining boys showed lots of courage and also finished 5th.

Winners are grinners and our Ladies 20’s side went through undefeated to claim victory in the grand final against Central Coast Dolphins.

Congrats to all the players, officials and team management who have put in a tremendous amount of time and effort so far.

The next Senior Rep tournament being NSW Country Championship is only a matter of weeks away in Wollongong on 22 and 23 October.

NELSON Bay Marlins AFL have had an amazing year celebrating success across a wide spectrum.

The Bay Marlins Women came back in the second half to win over defending champions Newcastle City in the Women’s Black Diamond AFL Grand Final in Newcastle on Saturday 27 August.

Newcastle led 16-7 at the first change and then 23-8 at halftime but were unable to score a goal in the second half, being overpowered with a full time score of 5.3 (32) to 3.11 (29) by the Marlins.

Life Savers are prepared SUMMER is fast approaching and the Port Stephens Lifeguard Service, Council and local Surf Life Saving clubs have been hard at work preparing for the 2016/17 season.

Council’s Contracts and Services Coordinator, Ian Crawford said that everyone was looking forward to hitting the beach for another successful season.

“Last year was the first year of a new five year contract between Port Stephens Council and the Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) where there has been significant investment into providing new lifesaving equipment - increasing the level of safety on our beaches.”

“The results speak for themselves which is really pleasing for everyone considering there were good attendances across all beaches and a low rate of incidences over what was a busy summer season,” he said.

This year, the Port Stephens Lifeguard Service will operate at One Mile, Birubi and Fingal beaches.

Volunteer lifesavers will be operating from Birubi and Fingal beaches on weekends commencing on Saturday 24 September, with all beaches patrolled

seven days a week between 9am and 5pm.

Port Stephens Lifeguard Supervisor, Phil Rock said the lifeguard service would begin patrolling at One Mile on Saturday 24 September and Fingal and Birubi on Monday 26 September.

“Seeing the team back on the beach is a sure sign that summer isn’t far away and we’re all really excited about getting back to work.”

“We’ve spent the off-season reviewing statistics and improving our processes we’ll be working closely with volunteer lifesavers to continue to educate beachgoers on how to stay safe at the beach.”

“For us, the message is always the same - take note of the conditions before entering the water always swim between the red and yellow flags and follow the directions of lifeguards or lifesavers,” Phil said.

Birubi Beach Surf Life Saving Club Vice President, Helen Ratcliffe said that their lifesavers would be assisting in spreading the safety message.

“Our lifesavers are always happy to give safety advice to beach goers if they’re

“It’s important that parents stay close to their children, particularly if they are not confident surf swimmers and keep an eye on where they are in relation to the patrol flags,” she said.

Helen also added that surfboards (that includes foam boards with fins) are not allowed between the flags as this can put swimmers at risk.

This year, Birubi will also host round one of the Hunter Surf Life Saving Newcastle Permanent Series on Saturday 15 October.

Fingal Beach Surf Life Saving Club President, Brett Woods was excited about the new season.

“We’ve been in preparation for a couple of months now; making sure the club is ready to hit the ground running.

“Council has made a significant investment into equipment in recent years for both the ALS and volunteer lifeguards and we were able to see the benefit of that last season.

Mr Woods added that Fingal would play host to three major events this season.

“We’ll be hosting this year’s Hunter Branch Championships, the Hydrothon and the Summer of Surf – which replaces the Nutri Grain Ironman Series.”

Spearfishing in the Bay Kyle has a degree in Marine Science and has been working for the Department of Industry for the past 8 years, currently working in the area of Molusc research.

Kyle Johnston, a local spearfisherman, has always been a hunter gatherer.

When he was a young boy, he used to go mushroom gathering with his Pop and looks back fondly on those times.

These days Kyles hunt looks a little different and he takes to

the water whenever he has the opportunity.

Kyle and Jillian Johnston have a new edition to the family in the way of their 3 month old son Wyatt.

“I don’t have as much time as I used to but am pretty lucky that I have a flexible job which allows me time to have the occasional dive here and there,” Kyle Johnston told News Of The Area.
