ONE lucky student from St Philip’s Christian College, Port Stephens, will take part in the trip of a lifetime to Western Front battlegrounds as part of the 2017 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott announced that St Philip’s Christian College was among 21 schools from around NSW that would take part in the scholarship program next year. “This is a wonderful opportunity for a student to represent their school and their community,” Mr MacDonald said. “Premier’s scholars will take part in a 12-day tour of the Western Front in Europe, travelling to significant Australian battlefields in Belgium and France.” “They will also take part in commemoration events in the town of Ypres in Belgium, and pay their respects to the 38,000 Australian soldiers who lost their lives there 100 years ago.” More than 130 Government,

q Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald with Principal of St Philip’s Christian College Dr Timothy Petterson. Catholic and Independent schools across the state entered the ballot for the scholarship. The 21 successful schools will choose one student to take part. Students from the 21 schools will be asked to prepare a piece of work based on the Centenary of Anzac. Each school will select one
winner to participate in the tour. Mr Elliott said the tour will bring to life the history of the First World War and offer students new insight into Australia’s wartime history and the birth of the Anzac legend. “The successful student will join scholars from around NSW
and take part in what will likely be one of the most memorable experiences of their school career,” Mr Elliott said. “I look forward to meeting the St Philip’s Christian College scholar when the successful students are announced in March next year.”

THE Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group was founded in 2001 by Nola Lawler who was assisted by a small group of hardworking ladies. Currently with a membership of around 90 volunteers, they assist with driving patients to Newcastle and surrounding areas for radiation, chemotherapy or medical appointments. Members also attend sewing bees to make underarm/comfort cushions for mastectomy patients and help out with fundraising. More areas of support include housekeeping following a mastectomy, lawn mowing, supply of wigs, surgical sleeves (all paid for by the group) and face-to-face support. Each situation is assessed by the Committee. The group is independent, receives no Government assistance and is funded entirely by donations from the community.

NELSON Bay NOW is fighting for the needs of Nelson Bay to be met by Port Stephens Council and the NSW State Government. The advocacy group was formed in July this year to bring new business into the CBD and to obtain a focus by Local and State Governments on the needs of rejuvenating popular tourist areas for tourists and local residents. Nelson Bay NOW is made up of members including The Tomaree Business Chamber, Eco Network, Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Assoc, D’Albora Marina, Destination Port Stephens and Nelson Bay Property and Business Owners. Although the group doesn’t want to dwell on the past, they report that in the last 15 years the only cash flow that has come into Nelson Bay has been through an increase in a rate
levy in early 2000. Members are keen to work with Port Stephens Council Staff to deliver the implementation of the 2012 Nelson Bay Town and Foreshore Strategy. The strategy includes better linkage of the Town Centre with tourist services and facilities located within the Foreshore area as well as providing car parking that minimises traffic within the Town Centre and Foreshore. Kate Washington, Meryl Swanson, Scot McDonald, NSW Department of Planning, The Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Port Stephens Council Staff have been a wonderful support to the vision of Nelson Bay NOW. “Every member of the group is very busy in their own businesses and careers but we each feel this is such an important issue for Nelson Bay and, as a result, we are having to meet together more regularly to address these urgent issues,” Ryan Palmer President of the Tomaree Chamber of Commerce told Bay
News Of The Area. “Newcastle has such a lot of redevelopment in the CBD happening at the moment and we feel it’s a good model for Nelson Bay to capture both

government and private investment,” Mr Palmer said. Regular meetings are currently drawing lots of attention from Government departments.

RIOT in the Bay By Jewell DRURY
ARE you a lover of Heavy Metal Music along with some Punk and Classic Hard Rock? Here on the Tomaree Peninsula there is a radio station designed with you in mind and it even comes with a warning that some songs may contain explicit language! RIOT FM 87 is the brainchild of General Manager or Supreme Overlord, as he is often referred to, Rohan Khan Brown. “I grew up here in Nelson Bay and I love the place, I cannot imagine living anywhere else,” Rohan told Bay News Of The Area. Rohan’s passion for music and RIOT is obvious as the Founder, Programmer, Music Director, General Manager and Janitor of the station which he balances while studying a Bachelor of Music. “I’ve always wanted to listen to a radio station I could listen to for a whole day happily, one that would make me bang my head and get me moving,” Rohan added. Taking some time in the
planning, RIOT first went to air in March this year. Radio was a natural path for Rohan to take, following in the footsteps of his father and General Manager at Bay FM 99.3, Geoff Brown. The broadcast on the Tomaree Peninsula can also be listened to across the Bay in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest with the hopes in the near future to be heard throughout most of Metropolitan Newcastle. The station prides itself on playing music that other FM stations are too afraid to play including a good percentage of Australian and local artists and bands. RIOT encourages local Newcastle and Port Stephens bands to send in their CDs or MP3s for consideration for airplay. Riot FM is the first radio station in Australia that caters 24/7 for listeners who love good old heavy rock. For more information contact RIOT FM on 49844673 or Rohan through email at rohan@riotfm. com.au

Where there’s a need there’s a Lion By Jewell DRURY SOLDIERS Point Lions Club is an amazing group of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The Club supports people with disabilities, partakes in community greening, and fundraises for many worthwhile causes. The Lions Club of Soldiers Point was chartered on 14 June, 1978 and has always been a reasonably small but very active Club. Presently there are 18 members who work tirelessly for the local community. The Soldiers Point Club are a group of like-minded people who are dedicated to making the community a better place to live, work and grow. The Soldiers Point Club has been involved in many community initiatives this year including the infamous Lions barbecues seen at the Tomaree Markets the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month and the annual Lions Christmas Cake Stall at Bunnings. A highlight of this year was when a group of passionate Lions Club members took their barbecue to the recent Current Affair’s Richo’s Reno, the renovation

Special Feature: PART 2 of 4
BAYNews Of The Area
Built on a Foundation of Love Chris Walkling’s devotion towards the students was infectious amongst the staff and it was this caring environment that formed the foundation of the school, impacting the local community like nothing they had seen before.
By Jewell DRURY
WE continue with Part Two of the St Philip’s Christian College journey, which began February 1 1995, when the school opened its doors with a mere 42 students. Year by year the school continued to grow under the leadership of Principal Mr Chris Walkling and a small band of committed teachers and staff were all united with the same heart and vision of the ‘whole child’ education including intellectual, social, physical and spiritual development. In 2004 the College saw its first HSC students awarded their certificates with outstanding results across a wide range of subject areas. The College became an extension of family life and speaking to the families and former students they all share the same nostalgic yearning
for those early days of the College and a longing for the camaraderie that came with it so naturally. In 1996, the Koster family arrived at St Philip’s to consider enrolling, just in time for the morning assembly. Chris Walking was on the verandah looking at the students who were all lined up for assembly. The area was under construction with orange tape separating the students from the heavy work machinery including a bulldozer and backhoe. The question was asked to the students why they shouldn’t go past the orange tape. Some of the replies were, “So we don’t get dirty … so we don’t break the equipment,” and other similar responses. Chris Walkling smiled and gently said, “They are all very good reasons children, but
Thursday, 8 December, 2016
do you know what the main reason is?” The students all leaned in for his answer. Chris whispered very gently, “We don’t want you to go anywhere near the tape or what’s behind it because we love you and we don’t want you to get hurt.” “Those words gave me goosebumps as tears filled my eyes and I knew we were home,” Mrs Koster told Bay News Of The Area. Chris Walkling’s devotion towards the students was infectious amongst the staff and it was this caring environment that formed the foundation of the school, impacting the local community like nothing they had seen before. Part Three continues next week with an unexpected tragedy that hit the school and the Port Stephens community at large.

A night of whimsical shopping By Jewell DRURY THERE’S just something about a night market, a romance, an ambience, it seems to put a whimsical glow in the very atmosphere. It’s nearly that time again where you can experience a night market right in the heart of Nelson Bay. Sacred Tree Markets have a deep and evolving commitment to co-creating an environmentally and ethically sustainable future. They believe in compassionate fashion, and in sustainable manufacture and trade, where every person, their beliefs and their values are honored. Their aim to achieve this is through the creation of a high quality, holistic, culturally significant event focused on showcasing art, design, produce and talent. Their commitment is to the ongoing creation of an inspiring event created around the principles of peace, unconditional love, compassion and service. “Sacred Tree Market is an event built on the premise that when people see beauty in those around them, it causes beautiful
things to happen,” Ganga Ma Co -Founder and Manager of Sacred Tree Markets, told Bay News Of The Area. Established on invitation from the Nelson Bay community, The Sacred Tree Markets were launched on Nelson Bay’s foreshore & D’Albora Marina on December 11, 2015. The event is created around the premise of artists, designers, growers, makers and healers consciously gathering to create a beautiful, inspirational and uplifting event. The event was run on a trial period on a basis of three boutique events. On each of these occasions it proved a great success with over 5000 people visiting. The Sacred Tree Markets will be returning to the Nelson Bay foreshore on Friday night, December 9 and December 30. Every Friday night through January beginning January 6, the Sacred Tree Markets will continue to bring an indie flair to Nelson Bay. Electrician... FROM Page 7 tradesmen, were at the end of their tethers and just needed help. Troy Powell rode into town on his white horse and by the end of the day had addressed every problem and met every need. “I had a broken fan that nobody would come and fix for me, it had been so hot in my home and I was desperate,” Mrs Tonia Rees an 86 year old resident of Soldiers Point told Bay News Of The Area. “Troy arrived when he said he would, gave me his quote and finished the work that afternoon, he was so lovely,” Mrs Rees said. “It didn’t take him long and he was so nice to me, he even cleaned up after himself.”

OPINION
Best Cure is Kindness Dear News Of The Area,
WE would like to thank a very kind lady who helped us yesterday at Dutchmans Beach. My husband was stung by a stingray while swimming and was in a lot of pain. Shannon drove us to the hospital, helped us in and out of the car and was very kind and helpful to us.
We are travelling around Australia on our motorbike and camper trailer and have enjoyed staying here in Nelson Bay. Many thanks to Shannon. Tim is doing okay. Nicky and Tim Loader Nelson Bay Visitors

EDITORIAL STATEMENT:
Dave Matthews Seniors Tennis Tournament By Jewell DRURY THE Annual Dave Matthews Seniors Tennis Tournament, played the 1st weekend in December, brought more than 200 players and their support crews to Nelson Bay on the weekend. The Tournament is one of the largest in NSW, drawing a pool from Seniors players as far away as Queensland and the ACT and all the way in between. With six sessions over a three day weekend, the tournament saw 520 matches being played at three venues including Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Boat Harbour and Soldiers Point. Attracting players starting from 35 years upwards, it was common for the courts to see a combined age of 100 plus during each match. Tournament Director Steve Taylor told Bay News Of The Area, “It’s been fabulous, everyone had a great weekend without a single complaint.” “It’s been wonderful to see so many friendships form in such a great social environment with so many good people from all over the country,” Steve said.
Steve has been organising the tournament for the past three years and wishes to thank the club secretary Cheryl Moss for her unending help and support along with more than a dozen volunteers who gave up their weekends to make the Tournament a success. Major sponsor of the Tournament was Ryan Palmer as well as Port Stephens and Maitland Toyota and Birling Wealth Management sponsoring the day. Ryan Palmer wears many hats in our community as the President of the Tomaree Business Chamber and Nelson Bay NOW. Previously Ryan has also been a world ranked tennis player in both the junior tour and pro tour and now resides in Nelson Bay with is wife and two children. “I am very proud to sponsor the Dave Matthews Tournament that attracts so many people to our area,” Ryan Palmer told Bay News Of The Area. “I actually played with Dave Matthews in his last tournament here in Nelson Bay so my heart is really attached to this Tournament,”
q Ready for a game of doubles Katrina O’Callaghan from the Central Coast, Elaine Brockett from Picton, Dan Allen from Dubbo and Steve Taylor, Tournament Co-ordinator, from Corlette.
Mr Palmer said. The Mantra and Landmark were booked to capacity for this weekend’s event as the Tournament brought a huge influx of much-needed funds into the Nelson Bay Business Area in the lead up to Christmas.
q Dedicated players matched up for doubles: Richard Baranski from Narrabri and Chris Petrow from Nelson Bay.

Golf for Cancer Support By Jewell DRURY PORT Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group held their first Golf Charity Day on Tuesday 29 November at Nelson Bay Golf Club. 148 ladies donned themselves and their golf carts in shades of purple with teams of four taking part in the day to raise funds for the support of women in Port Stephens who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Tracy Smith-Transton from Curves at Salamander was the major sponsor with many other local businesses very generously donating prizes for the Giant Charity Raffle and the live auction. More fundraising options on the day were a guessing competition, 100 Club, Mulligan’s booklets full of free hits/kicks along with several novelty holes including substituting a golf club and ball for a hockey stick and ball. Surprisingly enough, there

was a hole in one on this hole. Volunteers were out in force collecting donations from the golfers with a total of just over $6000 raised on the day. “It was an amazing response from the local community to support this most worthwhile charity and we are most grateful for their generosity,” Rhondda Shaw, PSWCSG Secretary and Publicity Officer, told Bay News Of The Area. Next year’s Charity Golf Day has been planned for Tuesday 14 November. If you are a woman living in Port Stephens who is battling cancer, the Women’s Cancer Support Group can assist. “These ladies rely on family and friends to provide muchneeded assistance, but we are here to help and to give the everyday carers a break,” Ms Shaw said. If you would like more information please contact Cathy on 0427 767 388.
