Knights Train at Bay By Marian SAMPSON THE buzz is that the 2018 NRL season is going to be big and the Newcastle Knights new look team is ready to take on the competition. The Newcastle Knights took advantage of Port Stephens this week to train and enjoy the environment before their first round match against the Sea Eagles on 9 March which will be held in Newcastle. Mitchell Pearce’s arrival in the Hunter has footy fans excited. Pearce is one of a host of new players that will be fielded by the Knights who are coached by Nathan Brown. SKYLA Conlon has been building on her love of performing, drama and music, and perfecting her skills, from a very young age. She has just added a unique experience to the portfolio, being cast in an exhibition piece that will be played indefinitely in the High Court of Australia. The video is an information documentary style short film about the constitution of Australia, and will run on a repeating loop in a purpose built theatre at the high court in Canberra. The theatre and film will open the the public on 9 April and be open to anyone who visits the venue, including school groups. Skyla attends Hunter School of Performing Arts as a drama students and this is her first professional casting Skyla’s love of acting began with public speaking in her junior primary years, where she realised straight away it was something she loved. Her mother and father

about drama, simply being on stage performing and the buzz everyone feels before every show, or the sense of accomplishment I feel after every show.”

Legacy Awards Student Achievement Port Stephen Legacy Group Awards Student Achievement

By Marian SAMPSON

ELLIE Wagland has been presented with the Port Stephens Legacy Group (PSLG) Further Education Scholarship for outstanding academic results in the HSC 2017. More than 1,000 students from Tomaree High School (THS) were on hand to see Ellie Wagland, presented with the Port Stephens Legacy Group (PSLG) Award. Ellie received the Award for having attained the school’s highest Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) with a result of 96.25 for 2017 and also being named Tomaree High School’s Dux for that year. PSLG Chairman, Doug Jacka, congratulated Ellie and presented her with the inaugural PSLG Alan Hudson OAM and Bart

Richardson OAM Award and a cheque for $1000 for her outstanding academic results. Ellie is now enrolled at Macquarie University. The award was established to honor the service to the community of two of the original founder Legates Alan Hudson OAM and Bart Richardson OAM, in 2017. Legate Doug Jacka told News Of The Area, “Both men were veterans of World War II. Both were involved in Legacy for many years. In the Nelson Bay, Fingal Bay, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay and Tilligerry Peninsula areas, PSLG assists nearly 260 people who look to Legacy for varying levels of support, advice and social interaction. Most are elderly ladies

but, sadly, there is now a need to help families of our service people from more recent hostilities and peace-keeping operations. “We are most grateful for the support we continually receive from Tomaree High School, its students and staff, for the invaluable, cheerful and willing assistance from the school during our fundraising badge days. “The Education Achievement Award goes some way towards showing our appreciation to Tomaree High School,” he said. Sue Xenos, Principal of Tomaree High School said, “The school is very proud of the achievements of all our graduating students, & students like Ellie highlight the success being achieved by our students & teachers.”

PRELIMINARY work has begun on the construction of a new $700,000 Rural Fire Station at Fingal Bay, which will provide firefighters with modern facilities to continue serving the local community. Funded by the NSW Government, the new station will be constructed on Council land at 24 Boulder Bay Road, adjacent to the existing facility. Preliminary geotechnical work is already underway, with construction scheduled to start in March and expected to be complete in July 2018. Cameron Donaldson, Council’s Emergency Services Coordinator, says the new building will provide the local RFS with a welcome upgrade to their facilities. “This modern station will ensure the local Rural Fire Brigade can continue to

protect and serve the Fingal Bay community well into the future,” Mr Donaldson said. “The Fingal Bay Brigade not only fights bushfires, they also respond to urban fires, car accidents, flood and storm damage and other emergencies. “They are a crucial part of the community, and it’s great that we can play a part in ensuring they receive a much-needed upgrade to their facilities,” he said. Mr Donaldson says the new fire station will be built with modern construction materials. “The building will be constructed with sturdy precast concrete and will feature two truck bays, a multipurpose area, modern kitchen and office facilities and also onsite parking for the volunteers,” he said.

My husband watched a movie recently about two men who knew they were close to death and therefore created a bucket list. Now he has this grand idea that we should do the same. He wants to go snorkel diving with stingrays, climb snow capped mountains and various other things we have no time or money for. I’m at a loss as to how I should deal with this. Please help! Mrs HA, Bagnalls Beach Dear Mrs HA,

Good Lord. Okay, initially I thought this was a bit of a disaster. On closer inspection, I now realise that you have been offered a blessing in disguise. Many of us get stuck in a rut, Mrs HA. We work, we buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have, we gossip about people who don’t deserve to be gossiped about, and we complain about first world problems such as having to scan our own grocery items. These are not problems; they are reminders that we have the capacity to make choices in a country that is relatively prosperous and laid back. I don’t want to get all Louise Hay on you and start chanting affirmations, but health is the number one priority. Anything else is a bonus. If you and your husband are well enough to swim with stingrays or dance up and down alps like the Von Trapp family, I say go for it. Don’t wait until you get a poor diagnosis like the characters from your movie. The other advantage is that your husband has watched what seems to be an inspirational, feel good, family-friendly flick. Now if he’d watched Pulp Fiction, he may be suggesting that you snort coke and become hitmen. Or if he’d watched Vikings, maybe you’d need to go through your kid’s dressup box for some faux fur and swords. What if he’d been inspired by Forrest Gump and you had to run for miles and/or buy a prawn Check you’ve out ourgotten Fundraising trawler. I reckon off pretty Campaign Primary lightly, Mrs HA. Make thefor most of it. Schools. Your School could win $1000 from us. Check the Carpe detailsdiem, at: Jasminda.

Meet Leon Lindsay

By Marian SAMPSON

WE’D like to introduce Leon Lindsay 2018 Port Stephens Medal Recipient and Probus Advocate. Leon Lindsay celebrated receiving his Port Stephens Medal on Australia Day with The Probus Club of Port Stephens. The members enjoyed chatting and laughing with most members getting into the spirit by wearing the blue and red. Ann Gibson publicity officer for the club told News

Of The Area, “He was so happy just to be nominated and to be chosen to receive the medal was a real bonus for Leon after battling some recent health issues.” She believes that there were so many very deserving nominees. “We congratulate them all and thank Port Stephens Council for this program of appreciation and encouragement,” she said. Leon was a Rotarian and then joined Port Stephens Probus where he continually volunteered to take on

committee roles as well as organize numerous activities for his fellow members. Along with his wife Cathy, he is a very involved resident of Fingal Haven. He quietly gives of his time to unwell members and friends; just a visit or a chat and often driving them to Newcastle for medical appointments. He is a very valuable and valued member of the Probus community and was awarded a Life Membership in 2014. Leon Lindsay said, “I don’t do any more than a lot of

He believes that it is important to be mindful of what is going on around you in your own close neighbourhood which, in his case, is Fingal Haven. “A lot of older members of the community are alone, sometimes unwell and have mobility issues so I like to visit those I know of when I can, a few minutes for a chat and a laugh is no hardship for me,” he said. Leon has found his 28 years with the Probus Club of Port Stephens to be a rewarding experience. By being a very active member and taking on numerous roles on Committee, he and his wife Cathy and have made many close friendships. Leon encourages people to join Probus as it gives positive social inclusion and friendship to members and is a community for older people within the community.

President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to hearing from local entrepreneur Melissa Edyvean who with her husband founded the award winning Bondi Chai.” Rotary is a movement that believes in action and as such attendees are being asked to bring a bag of hope, it can be any bag, with a few items that can be given to people in need. “The proceeds from the lunch will go to the Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services, and towards our international project save the Kula babies,” she said. The Rotary Club of Salamander Bay supports Wendy Stein and the Save the Kula Babies which offers women in Papua New Guinea (PNG) access to women’s health, family planning, medical support and safe birth services which is very important for women in remote areas of PNG.

NSW Government Lists Koalas as Threatened By Marian SAMPSON

UPDATES to Biodiversity legislation in NSW came into effect last August. This legislation allows a species to be listed only once and the change has caused confusion in the community in regards to the Port Stephens koala population. While locals had been working towards having the local Tomaree Peninsula koala population listed as endangered, the laws changed, and they are still listed as vulnerable under the umbrella of threatened species. The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage states “The NSW Government recognises the importance of the koala as a threatened species and as an iconic species to the community.” Catherine Cusack MLC told News Of The Area, “The new laws mean more funding for threatened

species including $10 million specifically for buying koala habitat that meets National Park criteria.” Catherine Cusack believes that the new “single list” system will ensure that Port Stephens Koalas have the strongest possible legislative protections. She also supports the Chief Scientists recommendation that we have a local approach to stabilising and recoding koala populations. “I would like to see the local colonies of Port Stephens koalas and Tea Gardens koalas acknowledged as a high priority in terms of research and funding. “I see an opportunity with the NSW Government’s “whole of government” Koala strategy still being finalised,” she said. Funding will be available under the NSW

Government, Saving our Species Iconic Koala Project, which aims to secure the koala population of NSW in the wild for the next 100 years. According to the NSW Scientific Committee, Port Stephens’ koalas “are facing a very high risk of extinction in the near future. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens said, “We must act; two initiatives which would assist immediately is to buy back the Mambo Wetlands and progress the koala hospital.” She believes in addition to the Saving Our Species Fund the OEH Priority Koala Habitat fund of $10 million over five years may possibly apply for a buy back of Mambo. “Given the urgent threat, our koalas and initiatives designed to protect them, they should be a funding priority from either of these sources,” she said.

Pollet’s Martial Arts are a multi-discipline Martial Arts franchise that runs out of many locations around the state.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE number of people engaging in the Martial Arts disciplines of Karate and Jiu-Jitsu are increasing not just because of their self-defence components, but also their demand for

self-discipline. Pollet’s Martial Arts are a multi-discipline Martial Arts franchise that runs out of many locations around the state, this includes Medowie that runs Karate and Kickboxing classes

out of Medowie Sports and Business Centre every Monday of each school term. The franchise is owned by Shihan Danny Crouch and Sensei Skyy Crouch. Danny started his martial arts journey at the age of nineteen, starting with Tai

Chi in the regional city of Orange where he then pursued Ninjutsu and Boxing. He has gone on to become a 4th Degree Black Belt in Karate-Do as well as a 1st Degree Black Belt in Kempo Jiu Jitsu. Medowie’s main instructor recently became a Grand World Champion in Koshiki at the ISKA/ ISJA (International Sports Karate & Jiu Jitsu Association) World Cup in Sydney, so you know you are in good hands. Eighteen-year-old

Layton Hills started at Pollet’s Martial Arts weighing 130kg and lacking confidence and self-esteem, now he is the best in the world. And he could train you to become a better version of you. However, Layton wasn’t the only star from Pollet’s Martial Arts at the World Cup. The ISKA/ISJA World Cup is held in Sydney NSW every three years and is an elite 5 star event which sees National and International

competitors vie for their position as the best of the best in Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. Sensei Skyy Crouch told News Of The Area, “The level of competition is extremely high, yet the representatives of Pollet’s Martial Arts walked away with a Grand Champion World Title Belt, a Runnerup Grand Champion Medal, 14 World Title belts, 20 Silver Medals, 10 Bronze medals and seven fourthplace medals.” “An absolutely amazing result.”

of the art sound system. James has and will continue to cater for a huge list of venues week after week. From wall to wall crammed pubs to laid back cafes and functions for all ages. James fell in love with Music at the age of 12 or so and begged his parents for guitar tuition. Jamie said, “I thankfully had a disciplined tutor who taught strict reading music much to my disappointment at the time, but as soon as I began playing, I was writing my own music and lyrics.” The love for music became permanent, and Jamie longed to make it his career. Jamie said, “As life went on I became frustrated with the mundane working to pay the bills life and left my job to pursue my dreams, and I haven’t looked back.” “I have never given up on this dream and now here I am doing it.”

“I am truly doing this for myself but I dearly hope you enjoy it,” he said. Nelson Bay Bowling Club

is a venue that has something for everyone, and it’s the place to be this weekend if you want to enjoy a relaxing night out.

Hurdman told News Of The Area, “She competed in 3 events and proceeded to win gold in all of them”. Shari’s results show that she is on track to go further in athletics, winning the 100m sprint in 14:04 seconds which was a personal best, the 200m sprint in 29.00 seconds and the 400m sprint in 1:06.16 seconds, which was another personal best. The Little Athletics Track and Field State Championships

will be held 23-25 March at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre and Shari should be representing the region there. Athletes in the age groups U9 to U17 are eligible for this event. Qualifying to State is via performances at each of the 8 regional events held across the state. “The next challenge for Shari’s coach Bob McElvoy will be to focus on a block start, a skill that Shari is still working on,” she said.
