Hole Lot of Trouble By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE recently completed kerb ramps installed on many street corners around the Boyd Oval area have been a welcome addition to the community’s infrastructure. But the kerb ramp installed onto the corner of Maple Close and Grey Gum Street in September has become nothing but a hindrance for surrounding residents. The construction of the ramp appeared to be problematic for council workers assigned to construct the new kerb ramps, and the site was left unfinished, with an open hole next to the new ramp and sidewalk, leaving wires and cables exposed. Residents nearby have made multiple phone calls to
Port Stephens Council to have the site finished, but are still waiting for a response, leaving them frustrated and angry about the potential safety risk. After the first phone call to alert Council to the problem, Council workers were sent out to erect makeshift barricades and fencing designed to stop residents from entering the area where the cables and wires are exposed via a large hole in the ground. The makeshift nature of these barricades acted as a bright flashing light to vandals who are constantly targeting the area, moving the barricades away from the exposed cables and opening up the hazard. Ostensibly, the sessions were held to provide those negatively affected with information about the Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) report carried out at the RAAF Base Williamtown. However, the Walk-In Session did not meet the
needs of all local residents. Speaking to Medowie News Of The Area, Mr Cain Gorfine from the Williamtown And Surrounds Residents’ Action Group said, “Yet again the community left the Defence Session frustrated and
angry.” “Defence admitted that the chemicals are still leaving the base on a daily basis into the surrounding community, but that cleanup efforts have only been explored on base with no consideration given to the
local residents or their properties.” With news in that the Hunter Estuary Wetlands has also been impacted by the Williamtown contamination, it is likely that many communities, both ecological and human,

LAST week Kate Washington MP announced all residents on both sides of Shady and Chris Ave, Salt Ash will receive free water reticulation funded by the Defence Force. This is due to the Defence Force’s Red Zone water contamination barrier running down each street, encompassing the southern side and not the northern. While some residents in the street fought alongside Kate Washington for this right, others are not pleased with the outcome. Shady Avenue resident Peter Trappel, who lives on the northern side of the street told News Of The Area, “While I respect that people who need and want the water reticulation have
fought for it and achieved it, there are others who are not prepared to pay a quarterly water bill.” “I’ve been using the two water tanks I have on my property for the past 20 years and have never run out of water or needed to pay for it.” The works, which Hunter Water expect to be completed in early 2017, will enable all developed properties on both streets to access the town water supply. “Unless you are drinking your bore water or don’t have access to your own water tanks, I don’t know why you would chose to pay for water when you can get it for free,” Mr Trappel said. “As far as town water is concerned, I’m not interested. I’m happy with what I’ve got.”

Jade Smith said that this is a dangerous situation and that more direct action should be taken. “After the first call, the Council sent someone out to erect a barricade, but it gets moved every weekend and all that is left is a big hole with wires hanging out. It’s not good enough,” Kelly Smith told News Of The Area.
“The residents are always the ones out there doing repairs.” With summer school holidays, the number of children walking, riding and running past the Maple Close/Grey Gum Street corner will no doubt increase thanks to its close proximity to Boyd Oval, the skate park and tennis courts. DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE:
Be Prepared for Bushfires A WET winter and good spring growth means a higher-than-average bushfire threat this summer, with hot and dry conditions forecast for the coming months. This advice, from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade, will help residents and tourists to be prepared. Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said, “Now is the time residents should be inspecting and preparing their homes and properties, then follow up again after Christmas. “Also think about what you’re going to do with your pets and what to do if you’re travelling.” The following list should be part of your plan: When will we leave? What will be your sign to leave? It could be smoke in your area, or as soon as you find out there’s a fire
near you. Where will we go? Where’s a meeting place that’s safe and away from a fire area? It might be a friend or relative’s place, or even a shopping centre. How will we get there? What road will you take? What’s your backup plan in case the road is blocked? What will we take? Make a list of what you’ll take in the event of a fire. Remember to include pets, identification and irreplaceable items such as photos or documents. Who will we call? There should be someone we can call to let them know we’re leaving and that we’ve got there safely. What is our backup plan? What if things don’t go to plan? Identify a safer location nearby such as a neighbour’s home that is well prepared, or a place of last resort. If you decide to stay be sure you are well prepared
by asking the following questions: ● Are we putting anyone in our family at risk by staying? For example children, the elderly, or people with asthma. ● Will we cope in an emergency situation? In a fire, it will be physically and mentally draining. ● Do we have all the equipment we need? Go through all the items on the RFS Decide to Stay checklist and see what’s missing. Make a commitment to get all equipment by a specific date. ● When there is a fire, what is our sign to start defending our home? It could be as soon as you find out there’s a fire near you. Do not wait for an official warning. ● Do we know what to do before, during and after a fire? Study the Decide to Stay action checklist. ● What is our

back-up plan? Consider unexpected events such as if one of us is home alone, if we aren’t home, if the fire moves faster than expected or if the phone lines and electricity are down. It is not safe to stay with your property under
some circumstances, such as if the fire danger rating is Catastrophic; if there is an Extreme fire danger rating and your home is not specially designed or constructed for bush fires; or if your property is not well maintained.

THE family of Baron the greyhound have had their Christmas holiday come to a tragic end, with their beloved pet found dead at Jane’s Pet Resort in Fern Bay. Nathan Wilson and his partner Dean Compton arrived at the Pet Resort to collect their two dogs, Baron and Charlotte, a day early from their holiday. A staff member returned moments later after going to collect the animals, telling Dean and Nathan, ‘your dog is dead’, in front of one of their two sons. Staff at Jane’s Pet Resort told the family that they had checked on the dogs not more than fifteen minutes prior to collection, but, according to Nathan, a local vet examined Baron’s body and confirmed that he had been dead for a number of

My in-laws came over for Christmas lunch and they are still here! How do I get rid of them?
This week News Of The Area visited local Medowie businesses to find out what the New Year’s Eve resolutions are for retain workers and business owners. Although many were shy and didn’t want to share their personal improvement plans for
2017, and others claimed not to have one, a few accepted our challenge and answered. Here they are:
1. Tim from Medowie Post Office: “Instead of two beers, every night I will have three! [chuckles].” 2. Tahnee Cook from Medowie Post Office: “To
enjoy 2017 and have some fun!” 3. Greg Brown, new to Medowie’s Dowling Real Estate: “Get to know the local community a bit better as I’m new to the area.”
4. Carol Saunders from Sportz Cafe: “I’ve never been one committed to a

Mr GJ, Nelson Bay
Oh, GJ, I feel your pain. It’s the coastal factor. Have you seen holiday rental prices in the Bay? I once had a visitor who hung around the house for two years. I ended up marrying him for a host of reasons that may or may not have included lust, tax benefits and mechanical aptitude. But enough of that, let’s get to the task at hand. You don’t have in-laws visiting, you have outlaws intruding. When you give something its correct title, it is easier to navigate. Christmas lunch? That is so last year. I do not mean that in a rhetorical sense, my dear man. According to the Chinese Zodiac, which is as good a place as any to gain insight, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. Now, I’m not sure you’ve spent much time with roosters, but thankfully I have. It is the rooster that you need to start impersonating if you want your ‘guests’ to leave. Crow from the time the sun rises. Crow about any old thing. Poke your chest out and do it loudly and proudly. Screech about the old-person underwear hanging on your shower rail. Cock-a-doodle-do about the mounting food bill. Squawk about the cricket that’s been on 24/7. Keep at it, GJ, and those outlaws will get the message and waddle out of your lounge room and back down the expressway. Then things will be back to normal. Just you and your wife and the usual hen-pecking.
