Path for all By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE scenic route at Tanilba Bay just got even nicer, with the official opening of a new section of pathway down on the waterfront. Tilligerry Land Care and Tanilba Bay Parks and Reserves are to be thanked for their tireless efforts to make this pristine waterfront accessible for everyone from all walks of life. Fran Corner, Chair of Tilligerry Landcare, told News Of The Area, “The new path starts at Forster Park and comes all the way to Tanilba Park.” “It’s certainly a long time coming, but it’s so wonderful to finally have it finished.” “We look forward to it one day going right the way along the waterfront,” she said. In attendance at the opening was the Mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer, Councillor Sarah Smith, Kate Washington MP, members of Tilligerry Landcare and Tanilba Bay Parks and Reserves, and members of the public. Ryan Palmer addressed the crowd on behalf of Council as the first guest speaker, telling attendees that it is wonderful to see

volunteered her time to do something to make sure yet another successful Anzac Day took place. She is Medowie’s very own Biscuit Lady, Jenny Nicholls. Jenny singlehandedly provided around 600 Anzac biscuits to be distributed at the Medowie Dawn Service. Jenny and her husband Ron moved to Medowie over fourteen years ago, and they have truly made themselves into ‘locals’ in every sense of the word, that care about their community. Jenny told News Of The Area, “When we first moved here, I read that Rotary did a snag sandwich, and tea and coffee, so I thought it might be nice for a biscuit with a cuppa.” “That’s how the biscuit

lady started, and what I have become known as.” Her numbers of biscuits have increased over the years, but she has now settled on a good number she believes. “I think the 600 worked well, which included a few dozen gluten and dairy free.” Jenny said. “It has been fourteen years of calculating

looking forward to it,” said Jenny. For those who enjoyed the biscuits and are wondering about Jenny’s recipe, but thought she’d be keeping it a secret, she was more than happy to share with the community. You’ll need: 1 cup plain flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup coconut, 1 cup rolled oats, 125g melt butter, 1 tablespoon syrup, 1 teaspoon bicarb and 2 tablespoon boiling water. Mix flour, sugar, coconut, and rolled oats together, then melt the butter and syrup together. Mix bi-carb with boiling water, then add to melted butter and syrup (will bubble up). Add to dry ingredients, and use tablespoon to size the mixture onto cooking trays. Cook for 15 minutes in a medium oven.

MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY News Of The Area

Larrakia Artist By Rachael VAUGHAN

IF you have not experienced the artwork of Jocelyn Archer, you are missing out. Jocelyn is a proud Murri woman from the Larrakia mob from Darwin in the Northern Territory. She is an incredibly talented Indigenous artist who paints with heart, spirit and passion. Her artworks are full of culture and speak the stories of her ancestors through her brush, passing them down, ensuring they will be remembered forever. Jocelyn has been painting since she was a young girl, and credits her father with teaching her how to paint. Her favourite medium to create artworks in is acrylic paint, and she is most ‘at home’ when painting salt water animals. Jocelyn’s children and

grandchildren were raised strong in their culture and are proud of their ancestry. Jocelyn’s artworks will ensure her families stories will live on, their stories will continue to be told, and they will leave their mark on this world. Her art is centred on this story telling of Aboriginal culture, and sharing knowledge of the land and beliefs of Aboriginal people. Jocelyn has four very unique pieces she has created that are destined for a special project. Two of her grandsons, Antwone and Keaundre have been selected to attend representative tours and trips, so she has decided she wants to help her family to pay for the cost of these by giving away her art to four very lucky winners. Jocelyn told News Of The Area, “These four paintings

are special stories for me, and I’m pleased to see them go to some good homes to raise some money to show my grandchildren how proud I am of them and their achievements.” “The first painting is a story about hatching turtles and all us kids sitting on rapid creek beach in the Northern Territory, watching them hatch each season, and the second painting is about the Salt Water Turtle, one of our main traditional tucker.” “The third painting is in special memory of my Dad and Uncles hunting for stingrays with spears and the last one is about the Black and White cockatoos, and how they are warnings of the change of seasons, and how we would watch them after the bushfires,” she said. The competition will be announced, run and drawn on Jocelyn’s brand new art page on Facebook.

REDcycle program hits Medowie

q Junior environmentalists: Hudson and Milla Goodwin enjoy getting involved in the family recycling. By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Jocelyn Archer, with her artworks for the competition.

THE Medowie ‘Return and Earn’ system has had mixed reviews since its conception, however the facility has been in constant use since its unveiling with hundreds of thousands of cans and bottles being recycled, along with thousands of dollars being earned though these acts of recycling. The return and earn system is limited in that many other recyclable materials are simply not included. Port Stephens Council’s own recycling program is quite extensive, however, not all plastics can be recycled using the yellow bin service. Even though the gap between the two is quite small, the quantity of product falling through this recycling gap and into landfill is sizeable. Plastic food packaging

and plastic shopping bags cannot be recycled through either the ‘Return and Earn’ initiative nor through Council’s recycling program. In a development that may surprise many people, Coles Supermarkets have taken steps to fill that recycling gap. Australia use over four billion single-use plastic shopping bags per year, with only 3% being recycled. It is estimated that around 200,000 plastic shopping bags are dumped into landfill every hour, taking between 15 to 1000 years to degrade. It is because of these reasons plastic shopping bags are on their way to being banned by many retail outlets across the country. However, many food products we purchase are still packaged with soft plastics. This is where Coles Supermarkets and their REDcycle Program can fill the recycling gap and help ensure less and less waste ends up in landfill. Biscuit packets,

confectionery packets, plastic shopping bags, bread bags, rice and pasta bags, produce bags, frozen food bags and old re-usable bags can all be recycled by the REDcycle Program. Samantha Goodwin, a Medowie mother who has supported the introduction of the REDcycle program at Coles, told News Of The Area, “Our family is really interested in the recycling programs available to us, and try to follow the recycling scheme to a tee.” “We need to look after our beautiful town and country.” With the introduction of the REDcycle Program, there is very little that should end up going into landfill if we all try to “do the right thing” and use the services we have available to us. Through the ‘Return and Earn’ initiative, Council’s own recycling program and now Coles Supermarket’s REDcycle Program, there isn’t much we can’t recycle.

Menopause The Musical By Rachael VAUGHAN

MOTHER’S Day weekend is days away, and if you haven’t planned something special for Mum, Aunty, Grandma or even the nice retired lady next door who takes your bin in, then Nelson Bay Diggers have the present that will help you out of this pickle. This Friday night, 11 May, ‘Menopause the Musical’ hits the stage at 8pm for a perfect night of belly laughing. ‘Menopause The Musical Women on Fire’ is set around four women in a department store who have nothing in

common but a black lace bra they want to buy at a lingerie sale. The female cast pokes fun of their woeful hot flushes, wrinkles, night sweats, and chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created between them, and a wonderful musical that features popular tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s is born. This new hilarious celebration of women and ‘the change’ stars Victoria Nicolls as the Dubbo Housewife, Melanie Evans as the Professional Woman, Meg Kiddle as Earth Mother and Lilias Davie as the Soap Star.

Based on the original book and lyrics by Jeanie Linders, this new production features new songs, new dance routines and new gags in a 90-minute tour-de-force which will finish with the audience dancing with the stars or busking in the aisles. Audiences are invited to join the sisterhood and see what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about all around the world. ‘Menopause the Musical’ is the guaranteed ‘Number One Girls’ Night Out’, and most people who have seen the show say it’s impossible not to laugh.

From dance floor to swimming pool By Rachael VAUGHAN

WHEN your chosen sport isn’t available locally, what is a girl to do? Sign up for lots of new things, and give those a go in the meantime, that’s what. This is exactly what Emily Whittington has done, and she’s achieving in a whole new range of sports. Emily is twelve years old this month, and is a year seven student at Irrawang High School. Her chosen sport is Rhythmic Gymnastics, which Emily started training at in 2012. She competed in the State Titles and National Clubs Championships in 2017 for rhythmic

gymnastics. There are no clubs available locally for the sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics, so this sport is on the back burner at this current time. Emily is currently taking eight dancing classes per week at a local dance studio, but has never been one to not fill every bit of her week with being active. She decided to give swimming a go at her school’s athletics carnival, and not surprisingly found that she is a pretty competent competitor there too. Calling it ‘just a hobby’, Emily won awards for swimming at Zone level

swimming competitions in both 2016 and 2017. She went one better this month, by being selected in her ‘hobby’ sport to compete in the 100m backstroke at the Combined High School swimming championships. Emily is still working hard on her dancing, and staying active in general. She is hoping to return to rhythmic gymnastics in the future. Emily told News Of The Area, “There is a part of me that really likes competing, I always do my best, and have fun.” News Of The Area wishes Emily all the best in her sporting pursuits.
