Students excel at Dance Eisteddfod By Rachael VAUGHAN

DURING the recent school holidays, dance school ‘Dance n Dazzle’ had quite a few students compete at the Abermain Eisteddfod, which celebrated its 99th Year this year and is planning big things for its centenary next year. Each year, dancers enter the competition, run by the Abermain Society, in the styles of Jazz, Tap, Classical

Ballet, Modern Contemporary, Song and Dance and Singing to win trophies and cash prizes. It is extremely competitive with hundreds of children competing, and runs for a full week. Medowie Dance n Dazzle students had impressive results yet again. Kyara Darcy won the Junior 12/U singing scholarship, taking home $200.00. CONTINUED Page 3

THE Fire season is certainly upon us, with several out of control fires in the Hunter, Port Stephens and Myall Coast on the weekend, exhausting crews and drawing on every resource available to them. Rural Fire Brigade branches from Raymond Terrace to Bulahdelah reported that almost every

registered member on their rotation were called out for the fire that swept across Wallaroo, Balickera, Twelve Mile Creek, Limeburners Creek and also threatened the townships of Karuah, North Arm Cove and Carrington. He and his wife and adult children stayed to fight, and were lucky to be able to save their home, though suffered damage to other buildings on their property. Barry’s wife, Kay Delaney, told News Of The Area, “I cannot express enough thanks to the RFS who worked so bloody hard and miraculously saved our house and animals.” Karuah resident

Sonja Evans and her family were literally held hostage in their home with fires burning all around them and spot fires in their back and front yards. “We had packed the car ready to go, but there was nowhere really to go with both north and south roads in and out of the town blocked by the fires,” Sonja told News Of The Area. Adding to their woes, their home backs onto the Karuah timber farm. “If it went up, we would have had no chance,” she said. She also took home a second place award for Speed Tap and Highly Commended for Demi Character. Scarlett Darcy had a successful day also, taking home first place awards in 8/U Singing Championship, Song and Soft shoe, and Hymn Singing, as well as a Highly Commended for Slow Tap. Olivia Lightfoot and Maddison Cunningham combined their talents, and

were delighted to take home 1st Place in the 12/U Jazz Duet. Olivia Lightfoot was equally impressive with a 1st Place 12/U Slow Tap, and Isabella McQualter took home a Highly Commended for 14/U Jazz.

AS our community continues to mourn the loss of Corey Pethebridge, a gesture made by a community member has transformed into something very special. Corey was killed while riding his motorbike home on Wednesday 26 October on Abundance Road, Medowie. In a public show of grief, friends of the Irrawang High School established an impromptu shrine on the side of the road to commemorate the life of Corey. There has been recent concerns that this memorial would eventually need to be moved on from its current site. Abundance Road resident, Bronwyn Flinn, lives across the road from the memorial and accident site, and decided she wanted

to try and help. With a simple post on social media, she offered to find someone to move fencing on her property and section off part of one of her paddocks to create a permanent memorial for Corey’s friends and family to come and sit and remember him. Bronwyn also provided the use of a trailer to house Corey’s special items from his impromptu shrine until the

McHappy Day Preparations Medowie Christmas Helping Hands Carols McHAPPY Day will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year on Saturday 12th November and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is encouraging Medowie residents to help raise a record breaking $3.8 million by purchasing a $2 Helping Hand or a pair of Ronald Socks for $3, which are now available from local McDonald’s restaurants. “McHappy Day is the biggest fundraising event for RMHC and Helping Hands is a symbol of how RMHC programs are able to continue to provide much needed services and programs for families with children going through a serious illness. It really is through the help of individuals who extend their hand, either through donations or volunteer work, that has made RMHC what is it today,” Barbara Ryan, CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities said. “Every donation, large or small, has a positive effect on families faced with a child’s serious illness – I hope the local community will be happy to show their

support in the lead up to McHappy Day,” Ms Ryan said. Corporate Helping Hands will also be available for businesses to purchase in $10 and $50 increments. Medowie businesses will be able to post a Helping Hand in their local restaurant and will also receive another to display in their office. “The power of family closeness is a driving factor in the work of RMHC and this year’s fundraising goal equates to providing around 28,000 nights for Australian families at one of the 16 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia,” Ms Ryan said. In addition to Helping Hands and Ronald Socks, locals can get behind McHappy Day by simply dropping in to one of over 950 McDonald’s restaurants across Australia on Saturday 12th November to make a donation to RMHC or by buying a Big Mac ($2 from every Big Mac will go to RMHC). Donations can also be made via www.rmhc.org. au/mchappyday

THE Medowie Christmas Carols, hosted annually by the Williamtown Rotary Club, is currently in preparation mode. The annual event will this year be held on Friday, 2 December at Ferodale Oval, Medowie. If last year’s carols of over 1500 people in attendance is anything to go by, this year will be another successful local event. President of the Williamtown Rotary Club, Mr Geoffrey Hamilton told Medowie News Of The Area, “This is an event run for the community and to give the people of Medowie the chance to get together and feel good.” The event is entirely dependent on volunteers, and includes Rotary club members, The Medowie Christian School, Baptist Church, Lions Club, Medowie Rural Fire Service, and other non-affiliated Medowie and surrounds residents. Like many community organisations, volunteers are needed for this event so that it can be success. Performing at the Carols

Grandparents as Carers support group By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Grandparents As Carers support group (GAPS) was joined by our local MP, Kate Washington, at a market stall this week at Marketown to raise awareness of the existence of their group. Children in foster care are often placed within ‘kinship’ placements, where the child is placed with family. The Grandparents As Carers support group (GAPS) was set up to offer support and friendship to some of these carers. With the mass overcrowding of the child protection system, it is so easy for their carers to slip through the cracks, and miss out support that they need. Group member, Gavin Breen, said the group has been running for nine years, yet they still regularly come across grandparent carers who did not know of their existence. Gavin told News Of The Area, “People are also often nervous about coming to a meeting, and admitting out loud that their family is going through a tough time.” Clare Bell spoke about the desire of the group to make carers, new and experienced, feel

comfortable. “We wanted carers to not be afraid to drop in and visit with us. We are a nonjudgemental group of people in the same boat, and we are here to support,” she told News Of The Area. Local member, Kate Washington, is a vocal supporter of the group, and is looking to help the group this year with bringing about change and awareness,

q Rotary Club President Geoffrey Hamilton planning this year’s carols at sponsor café Little Pantry. will be local school children and dancing groups. Hot food, coffee and soft drinks will be available from the Rotary Club’s mobile kitchen van. The Lions Club is also involved, selling candles for those twilight songs and assisting with the raffle. The highlight of the evening is the arrival of Santa on the back of a fire truck loaded up with sweets to distribute to the children.

Mr Hamilton told Medowie News Of The Area, “Local businesses have been really great in sponsoring this year’s event which helps with the rising costs of hosting the carols.” Some sponsors currently include: Century 21, Newcastle Permanent Building Society, Little Pantry café, Medowie Woolworths, Medowie Pet & Produce, Medowie Christian School, Medowie Chemist, Translec,

DO you have a bag, handbag or purse you no longer need? Why not consider doing something wonderful with it. The Girl Guides are adding another charitable experience to their long list of community giving and involvement. They are participating in the ‘It’s in the bag’ charity fundraiser from 19 November to 3 December.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

‘It’s in the Bag’ is an initiative of Share the Dignity, a nationwide volunteer group. An article by Mia Freedman published on Mamamia caught the attention of Share the Dignity. They were shocked to learn that in Australia many homeless women and women in domestic violence shelters had to face unthinkable indignities during menstruation and also in relation to their daily

Bull ‘n’ Bush, Medowie butcher, iTravel and Utopia Landscaping and Pools. The Williamtown Rotary Club is putting out a call for volunteers to assist on the evening. For those interested in participating, and local businesses interested in sponsoring the event, contact Mr Geoffrey Hamilton on 0418 639 937 or Mr David Thomas on 0403 266 179. hygiene needs. Reading it from the comfort of our homes, with the knowledge that many Australian women couldn’t take hygiene for granted during menstruation, we knew we couldn’t allow it to continue. So, the ‘It’s in the Bag’ initiative was born. The nationwide collections asks people to donate handbags and items women should not see as a luxury. These items may include sanitary products, baby wipes, perfume, soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair ties, socks and underwear. The list of potential items is endless. Medowie Senior Guides, girls aged from 14 to 17, will be our collection point for Medowie. For a service challenge this term they have decided to support the Share the Dignity charity/organisation and collect bags and items for these women. The girls will be raising funds by selling chocolates so that they can purchase bags and items. They are also seeking donations from our community – all donations of bags and items can be dropped off to the Medowie community hall on a Monday night between 6 to 8pm or by contacting Elizabeth Keeley on 0400 157 921.

WHERE ELSE DO YOU GET 8 PAGES (or more) OF JUST MEDOWIE, SALT ASH, WILLIAMTOWN? By Rachael VAUGHAN IN Australia, Remembrance Day is observed on the 11 November every year. Services are held at 11.00am at War Memorials, schools and in towns across the country. During the service, the “Last Post” is sounded by a bugler followed by one minute’s silence and “Reveille”. November 11 is significant because that was the day upon which the armistice ending the First World War was signed. This tradition was started after World War I, as at 11am on November 11, 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of warfare. For many years it was observed as Armistice Day, but since 1997 it has been officially observed as Remembrance Day, when we

remember all those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Neil Biggar, Hon Secretary of the Medowie RSL subbranch, told News Of The Area, “We hope to see a good crowd this year at the Medowie service, to join us in paying our respects to all past and present serving members.” The Medowie Remembrance Day Service will be held at Medowie Lions Park beginning at 11am on November 11. All those who wish to pay tribute to those who served are welcome to attend. Medowie Lions park is located at the corner of Medowie Road and Ferodale Road, adjacent to the Medowie Community Centre and opposite Woolworths car park. Please assemble at the park by 10:45am.

CARTER Goodwin is one extraordinary three-year-old. Twin brother to Milla, and younger brother to Hudson, Carter has already achieved so much in his short life. Carter was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (a disability that affects movement and posture), Epilepsy and vision and hearing impairments after contracting a virus shortly after birth. Carter undertakes regular physiotherapy and occupational and speech therapy with the intention of gaining greater control of his muscles and increasing his mobility and independence. All of these therapies come with expensive price tags, and one Medowie business decided they could do something to help Carter and his family. Carter’s father, Alex Goodwin, told News Of The Area, “We would like to extend our gratitude to the wonderful community and businesses of Medowie that have shown our family so much support.” “To say we live in a great community would be an understatement.” The Goodwin family would also like to extend their thanks to Jane of Century 21, The Tin Shed, Medowie Bakehouse, BYO bottle shop and Jenny for volunteering. A Medowie-based business, Extreme Fencing and Earthworx, has kicked off the generosity to make this memorial happen, and offered to supply and install appropriate fencing for the entire project. The planning for ‘Corey’s Place’ has begun. Friends and family of Corey, encouraged and boosted by the generosity of Trent and Justin from

Extreme Fencing, are now calling on the community to come together to help them finish the memorial. OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, JUST a quick update on the plant sale we had at the Medowie Garden Club on October 22, 2016. The weather was not kind, starting off cloudy but no rain, then the heavens opened and for a while the plants were well watered. However, overall, the day was a relative success and generated some funds for our Club activities. We were very pleased that the sale attracted people from areas outside of Medowie with one couple coming from Tea Gardens. They had seen the article in the News Of The Area. It is a great testament to the coverage of your paper and we wish to thank all of you.

q Green Thumbs at Garden Club.
