Mother of all gifts By Rachael VAUGHAN
WHEN Medowie woman Stevie Wilkinson became a mother for the first time in December 2015, she found the incredible, life-altering love she felt for the tiny little person really overwhelming. Stevie began to feel a sort of grief for women who, for whatever reason, could not have children of their own. In April of this year, she came across an advertisement, asking for women who might be prepared to gift their eggs to another woman unable to produce their own to carry a child. After discussing her thoughts and feelings with her husband, Stevie began making enquiries about donating her eggs.

She also joined two social groups, Egg Donation Australia and Egg Donor Angels. Stevie spoke to a lot of like-minded women, donors and recipients, and then eventually met her recipient to-be. Stevie’s recipient had gone through years of infertility and two failed IVF cycles before learning that at just 36 years old, she was premenopausal with a low ovarian reserve and poor egg quality. Her only option if she wanted to carry her own baby, was that of an egg donation. Stevie told News Of The Area when she and her recipient met, “We got

THE King Family are well known to residents in both Karuah and Medowie, so it was no surprise that the community banded together to plan a night to support Jason King, to help relieve some financial pressure on his family when he was diagnosed with Cancer. Jason King first showed signs of back pain in 2014, which was originally misdiagnosed as a bulging disc, but a second opinion diagnosed him with a ten-centimetre-
long tumour in his spine. Jason underwent surgery to remove the tumour, which was thought to be successful. However, in 2015, a surgery to remove varicose veins turned a lot more serious when a scan of his chest to rule out a blood clot on his lungs showed his thymus gland to be enlarged. The week after his second child was born, Jason was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. With 16 rounds of chemotherapy ahead, and Jason’s wife Kate on
maternity leave to care for their new daughter and him, money is tight and their focus needs to be on their family. Coles Medowie decided to do some fundraising, with the major event, Kingy’s Trivia, being held this week at the Medowie Bull ‘n’ Bush Hotel. A wonderful night was had with a packed full house of sold out tables. A night of hilarity was had by all, with humorous rounds of trivia, and a successful auction during intermission with a large table of donated generous items from

MEDOWIE resident, Adrian Drummond, has been the force behind the fight for adequate internet speeds for our area. Mr Drummond
featured in a recent edition of News Of The Area, calling for support of his petition to Telstra to fix the internet shortages and congestion in Medowie. Mr Drummond made contact again this week
to update Medowie on his efforts, having received a long awaited reply from Telstra this week, after letters he sent to CEO Andrew Penn. Text messages sent to Mr Drummond’s phone advised that work is
being done on the area’s exchange to provide congestion relief by 9 August. News Of The Area will keep the community informed on the progress of this matter as it continues.

Medowie contingent of schools for Education Week By Rachael VAUGHAN
q EDUCATION WEEK: Medowie oublic School band, Yasmin McGarry, Emersyn Towers, Lily Thurlow and Charlotte Merriman.
EDUCATION week is a celebration of Public Education. With a theme this year being ‘shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’, Medowie schools have showcased the fine education offered to young people and with great success. Medowie Public School, Wirreanda Public School, Hunter River High School and Irrawang High School all participated in individual school
performances and presentations in their respective schools. The three schools also came together in a true showcase of ‘shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’ with performances at the Raymond Terrace MarketPlace shopping centre during the week and at two nights of the ‘Lakeside Showcase’ at Irrawang High. Colleen MulhollandRuiz, Centre Manager/ Marketing Manager of the Marketplace Raymond Terrace, told News Of The Area, “We
are proud to be a part of bringing education from the classroom to the community.” “The talent exhibited by the students is second to none,” she said. “Not only were these children performing in the Centre Court at MarketPlace, they also performed to sellout audiences as part of Showcase 2016 at Irrawang High School,” said Ms MulhollandRuiz. Education Week 2016 saw a range of displays from singing, dancing, classical
ballet, drama, public speaking to musical ensembles and artists. In addition to the live performances during the week, there was also a static display of artistic works from the schools on display in the centre. The is the second year that MarketPlace Raymond Terrace has sponsored the event. News Of The Area look forward to celebrating Education Week with our talented young people for many years to come.

chatting and met for coffee several times before we both decided we wanted to proceed with each other.” “We had counselling both individually with our respective husbands and all four of us together, blood tests and genetic screening to ensure I wasn’t a carrier for any genetic conditions before I could begin cycling,” she said. “Now after almost 5 months my recipient has two perfect blastocysts on ice
ready to be transferred and we have become amazing, life-long friends,” Ms Wilkinson said. Stevie’s recipient will begin IVF next month to receive the fertilised egg, and hopefully progress with a healthy pregnancy. Stevie said, “My decision to become an egg donor has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I encourage any woman who thinks they could give someone in desperate need, the gift of their eggs to please consider
doing so.” There is a critical shortage of donor gametes with waiting lists in Australia up to five years long. In Australia, it is illegal to buy or sell any human tissue, including sperm, eggs and embryos, therefore egg donation is purely altruistic. However, legislation permits reimbursement of reasonable expenses involved, such as travel costs, accommodation, pain relief and time off work to be covered. Under current NSW
law, a child born from a donated egg, sperm or embryo is deemed to be the child of the birth mother. Donors are under no legal or financial obligation to the child. In 2010 the NSW Health Department established a Central Register for donors and donor-conceived offspring. Once a child conceived using donated gametes turns 18, they will be able to access certain information on the Register if they wish.

FENCE: Medowie Public School with the current wire front fence.
By Rachael VAUGHAN THE ageing wire fence along the front of Medowie Public School has seen better days. With their new look digital sign, Medowie PS wants to replace their old fence with a new, colourbond picket fence, keeping in style with the community based, country feel of the school. The school has come up with an ingenious way to raise the funds, with their new ‘purchase a picket’ fundraiser. For a small fee, families and businesses can purchase a picket and mark a place for their family or business on
the new fence. Families can purchase a picket for $20, which will include a small plaque attached with the donor details. Businesses can purchase the ‘Business Benefit Bundle’ for $100. This package includes a one year (twice per term) of advertising in the school newsletter with an A6 advertisement and ten weeks of digital advertising on the school LED sign at the front of the school on Ferodale Road with their logo appearing on weekdays between 2:30-3:30pm after the installation of the fence.

Medowie Public School contacted News Of The Area to help get the word out there about this clever fundraising idea, with P&C Vice President and parent, Angela Parish saying, “The best thing about this fundraiser is that anyone in the community can be involved and help support our school.” “The perfect community activity for a community minded school – purchase a picket, and have your name added to the fence,” she said. For more information on how to purchase a picket, contact the school on (02) 49828222

ANNIVERSARY: Jim Batt on the right with friends around the table.
By Rachael VAUGHAN NEWS Of The Area papers in Medowie and on the Myall Coast will begin a new editorial initiative starting this week. Taking inspiration from the infamous ‘Humans Of New York’, and the philosophy that everyone has a ‘story’, News Of The Area reporters will each week be approaching members of our community to tell you about themselves. News Of The Area spoke with long-term Medowie resident Mr Jim Batt for our first ‘Humans of Medowie’ feature story. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the “Battle of Long Tan” in the Vietnam War. It occurred on the night of the 18 August 1966. Mr Batt was one soldier in this battle, and he spoke to News Of The Area about his experiences, and about returning to Vietnam on holidays after a half century passed. “We landed at Hanoi. On travelling to our hotel I was amazed at the beauty of the countryside. I didn’t see one

bomb crater anywhere, a lot of time had passed, no sign of war now.” “A lot of craters had been made into ponds and water features others had been filled in I guess,” he said. “The last night I spent in North Vietnam was at a place called Husan. My wife had become sick, so she had to return to Aussie.” Mr Batt said, “I was left on my own with my ghosts still paramount in my mind. Opposite my hotel was a small Vietnamese restaurant. I sat, acquired a local Ale and decided to eat there.” “What followed was a wonderful display of humanity at its finest.” “The waitress of the evening spoke excellent English, and when an old man came out and the girl said he was her grandfather, Jim ask the girl if he had fought in the war. She replied that yes, he was a Viet Cong Officer,” Mr Batt told News Of The Area. Jim asked the young girl to tell the man that he was an Aussie Soldier in that war, as his enemy. The Area on the amazing reaction of this man, and the subsequent healing moment that ensued for both men. “His reaction is forever imprinted on my mind; over all the negative thoughts I’ve had over the last half century. He smiled from ear to ear as I did and we embraced and shook hands.” “A very long night ensued with much food and drink consumed. He spoke no English, but his Granddaughter acted as an interpreter,” Jim said. “We sang, We danced, We laughed, We cried, We parted. Those precious short moments with that old enemy Soldier mean so much to me.” After fifty years, Jim experienced something amazing. “We had been taught to kill and hate each other, but I swear to you, it is much better to be friends. Now Life Long Friends.” Jim told News Of The Area. News Of The Area wishes to thank Jim Batt for sharing his special story, and message. In Jim’s own words, “That’s that Medowie!”
AN increase in crime and incidences of dangerous driving on Medowie roads have prompted outrage on social media, a steady incline of police crime reports for our area, and increased concerns for safety in our homes, and travelling on our
roads. News Of The Area approached local member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, and asked for her assistance and support to address this matter. Ms Washington responded swiftly to News Of The Area, and advised that she has spoken with
local police, and raised the concerns of our community members about road safety and local crime. Ms Washington advised that the response of the NSW police is that they will organise a community forum for residents to attend, to have their concerns heard. News Of The Area will keep up to date with the organisation of this meeting, and advise the community when a date and venue have been chosen.
