Matt won gold in the teams event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and the Port Stephens based father of three was the perfect person to give the many young students a pep talk before they commenced their own competition. During Matt’s speech to the students, he spoke about the five values of Wirreanda Public School (confidence, resilience, getting along, organisation and persistence) being so well aligned with the values of being an athlete at an elite level. However, his final message was one that we all could take something out of. “Whether you are representing your school house, school, region, state or even Australia, participate with integrity and do your very best.”

q Australian Team wins Gold at the Commonwealth Games with Kelsey Cottrell, Natasha Scott, Rebecca van Asch, and Carla Krizanic. FROM Page 1 12 years Australian lawn bowls won gold at a Commonwealth Games. The team made it to the finals after beating Canada in the semifinals in what proved to be a tightly contested match, with the Aussies winning 10-9 against the Canadians. Ms Scott spoke to News Of The Area, saying,
“It is an unbelievable experience to be holding a gold medal with three of your good mates that are also your teammates.” “We had a very tough games to get to the final and it didn’t get any easier in the final.” “Bring on the triples!” Australian coach and himself a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mr Kelvin Kerkow admitted the
home ground advantage helped the team, saying in a statement, “Broadbeach is where the players have been participating, practicing and trialling in all conditions.” Ms Scott who trains at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was supported by many fans who have been closely following all her games and sending well wishes
In front of hundreds of people who crammed into Newcastle City Hall for the launch, acclaimed author Robert Drewe described Watermark as having the “essential wow factor”. “This book has a rare and precise power that speaks to us and seems real, we recognise something of our own lives in it,” he said. From a boy with dyslexia who finds the right words in the ocean, a drifter and her son who discover the true meaning of home, to a widower coping with the aftermath of his wife’s death, each of the 11 interlinked stories reveal how people respond to the uncertainty and disorder of life-changing events. Much like the characters in her book, Joanna’s own life has taken many unexpected twists and turns, resembling the constant movement of the
changing tides along the coastlines that captivate her. The turning point for Joanna was enrolling in a Communications degree as a mature aged student, reigniting her passion in creative writing and paving the way for Watermark, which came from the three and a half years she spent studying for her Doctorate. She now happily balances writing, family life and tutoring students with the abalone business she operates with her husband in Port Stephens, all of which relate to her writing. “I’m immersed in the local fishing business, so the coastal characters are a day-to-day feature in my life,” she said. “I write what I know, but I also write to find out what I don’t know, there is a point where imagination q Joanna Atherfold Finn. just takes over.”
Watermark Launched By John SAHYOUN
WALKS along One Mile Beach and lots of tea helped Port Stephens writer Joanna Atherfold Finn realise her long-held dream of having her first book published. Watermark, containing a collection of short stories exploring relationships in coastal communities, was officially launched at the Newcastle Writers Festival last weekend. Joanna said many of the fictitious stories in her book were influenced by the coastlines of Port Stephens. “It was important to have that local connection to my area, and to my area of interest,” she said. “The coast is never just a setting, it is also part of the story.”
to her up the coast; an effort that has paid off with the ultimate in Commonwealth Games glory, a gold medal, being attained. At the end of Day 5 competition, Australia was well ahead of the pack, and beating the traditional sporting foe, England to claim a medal tally of 106 which included 39 Gold, 33 Silver, and 34 Bronze.
Watermark is published by major international book publisher, Simon & Schuster. “When I read coastal novels or short stories by other writers, they resonate with my own experiences and make me reflect on a coastal life,” Joanna said. “I hope this book does the same for others.”

MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY News Of The Area
Good things come to those who work hard By Rachael VAUGHAN
KARLA David is a perfect example of the saying ‘Everyone has a story’. Working incredibly hard Karla’s story is one to be proud of. Born in May 1995, Karla is a fresh faced 22 year old. She spent her childhood between Tanilba Bay and Singleton, leaving Hunter River High at 16 to start an apprenticeship. Karla worked in a few local salons between Salamander and Nelson Bay before making the bold decision at 19 to make an interstate move. She arranged an interview in a salon in Brisbane Qld, and was offered the job. Karla packed up her life, and drove to Queensland to start the next chapter of her career. She told News Of The Area, “I loved it so much, the salon I worked at was amazing and I
loved everyone.” “Finding a salon you love and where you get along with everyone is quite rare these days, so I was very lucky.” Even though Karla enjoyed her work there, she was homesick without her family, and only knowing a handful of people outside of work. She ended up quite sick, and found herself in hospital, which was her wake up call that she needed to be closer to family. Karla did some bar work locally while looking for the right salon that she would love working at. She found that perfect place in Headz Up Hairdressing in Medowie. After 18 months of working, the option came up for Karla to buy the salon. Karla said, “I was only 21 at this stage, so I was afraid people would look at me and think ‘oh she’s too young and she wouldn’t know what she’s
doing’, but I decided to take a chance and turn my dreams into reality.” “I was forced to grow up quite fast and get my priorities straight, as the Salon had to become the number one priority over anything else.” “I don’t have children, so I think that’s a big advantage for me, as I can stay back any night of the week and accommodate all my working clients that can’t make our usual hours,” she said. Karla has now owned Headz Up Hairdressing for 18 months and has turned it into a beautiful salon. Staff include Fabian, the Barber in shop; apprentice Kacee Bessant; nail technician Karen Bennett; and three senior stylists including Karla, Jade Struck, and Jess Wilson. Karla told News Of The Area that it was hard going at the start. “For the first ten months of owning, I was the only person
working it, six days a week and over 45+ hours.” “But I stuck it out because I knew eventually it was going to become easier, I just had to build up a clientele and the reputation of the salon within the community.” “The salon and I have come so far, and I couldn’t be prouder of my amazing team and support people around me,” she said. “I plan on being here for a long time coming,” she added. Karla’s next dream is to buy another salon. She said, “It’s not just a job, it’s my passion and my dream come true. If you want something so bad, just go for it.” “Nothing is ever impossible, you just have to want it bad enough to make it happen.”
THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie held its 2018 Annual General Meeting recently and elected a new committee to guide it through the coming year. Some members were elected to the committee for the first time while for others
it was another year in the job. Paul Murrant was elected as President for his first time on the committee, while for his Vice-President, Paul Griffiths it was another year in the job. Secretary Kevin Tomlinson and Treasurer Dave Thomas have both been re-elected.
Two newcomers to the committee are Diann Colman as Membership Officer and Lyn Clarke as Outings and Activities Officer. Dawn Patterson remains as Hospitality Officer while Geoffrey Hamilton has taken over the Guest Speaker
Officer’s job. Ann Tomlinson remains as Welfare Officer and Terry Corcoran remains the Publicity Officer and Newsletter Editor. Leaving the committee are Past President Neville White, former Activities Officer Susan Humphries and former Membership Officer, Joy Waugh who have all spent some time in these roles. The club meets at the Medowie Community Centre on the third Wednesday of each month except December. The meetings commence at 10am and are followed by a morning tea in the hall. Most meetings feature an interesting guest speaker. Publicity Officer and Newsletter Editor, Terry Corcoran, told News Of The Area, “We are excited for the year ahead, and invite anyone wanting to give Probus a try to come down and join us for a meeting.”

Boardwalks and Bushfires THE recent destruction by wildfire of some 70 metres of pine boardwalk between Tanilba Bay and Mallabula, has left community members asking questions. The original bushfire management plan had the scrub in this foreshore section classified as a ‘fire exclusion zone’. Councillor Steve Tucker said, “Attitudes must change: the local volunteers are only too happy to do the job but the red tape involving the RFS and Council is so complex that nothing ever happens.”
“Our insurers will soon refuse to pay up for the numerous reconstructions we have to do.” Life member of Tilligerry Rural Fire Service Richard Osborne OAM said, ‘It’s not fair to ask the unpaid volunteers to drag heavy hoses through this scrub with no vehicular access trails. Luckily, during the recent blaze it was high tide and an RFS fire boat was able to attack the fire from the water side,” he said. Port Stephens Council say the area is ‘highly environmentally sensitive’.

q Councillor Steve Tucker.
Dear Miss AG,
Do you ever find yourself parked at traffic lights, or waiting to do a U-turn because despite the signs and the road blocks, you still think that you can turn right into Salamander Shopping Centre at that crazy intersection that nobody likes (except for one lone engineer with a quirky sense of humour) and you start singing, ‘Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage’? I do. I do this frequently, because, dear Miss AG, we are just rats, circling aimlessly on the spinning wheel of life and that spinning wheel involves lots of opportunities to buy celebratory presents for celebratory occasions, even when we don’t feel like it. Mother’s Day, though, is a bit of an exception. Mothers spend their lives doing things that aren’t a whole lot of fun. Sorting socks, cleaning, mowing lawns, waiting on the very uncomfortable seats at soccer training, holding down executive jobs, returning to make chicken soup with crusty bread rolls, joining committees, manning cake stalls, shuffling kids off to school, agonising over school assignments, starting paleo diets, stopping paleo diets, watching brain-dead shows at midnight because we are, quite literally, brain dead by that stage, and then waking up and doing it all again. And all we ask for, Miss AG, is a bit of a sleepin on Mother’s Day, followed by a corny card written by someone who clearly doesn’t know the meaning of the word Thesaurus, and perhaps an egg on toast. Forget the sprig of parsley. Forget the ‘sunny-side-up’ request. We will accept just about anything, as long as you leave us there, in the comfort of our bed for at least one hour longer than usual.

Lemon Tree Passage Library include 500 Large Print Books
THE frustrations that come with ageing can manifest themselves in many ways and small-print books are one of the problems that can make people grumpy. A recent makeover of the Lemon Tree Passage Library (opposite the motel) has seen a culling of the shelves down to about 5000 books, 500 of which are in large print. Leading the charge has been long time volunteer Robyn Lane who has also updated the books by restocking the library
4
with recently donated page turners. “We get many donations of works by popular authors,”she said. “These have now been catalogued and have replaced books that have been gathering dust for 20 years,” she added. Another little known service at the library is the free give-away of stacks of glossy magazines and journals. “Residents just can’t bring themselves to throw these quality publications
MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY NEWS OF THE AREA
out so they bring them in and anyone can take as many as they like home,”she said. The library also houses all current minutes of Port Stephens Council meetings which are regularly updated and available for perusal. It is open between the hours of 10 am and 12 noon, six days per week. Those wishing to donate books or magazines should check with the rostered librarian on 49 823477 during opening hours for details.

q Zac and Ben at the Stroud Central Hotel this Saturday night. The duo, who’ve had success with their former bands Powerage, Jupiter Menace and current band ‘Crawford Brothers’, create a high energy act that offers something different, catering for all occasions. The boys have an endless catalogue of material ranging from the rock and blues music of the 60’s and 70’s, to current top 40 hits.
Ben on keyboard and vocals and Zac on guitar, vocals and stomp box, are both multi instrumentalists, occasionally switching between them, using loop effects and taking requests on the spot. Throughout the Brothers’ endeavors on the live music scene they’ve shared the stage with some of music’s best including; Matchbox
20, Thirsty Merc, Grinspoon and the Radiators and have been performing together professionally since 10 and 14 years old. They’re a duo that quite literally offers something for everyone. Coupled with the laidback venue of the Stroud Central Hotel, we guarantee that it’s a road trip those not local to Stroud will be glad they took.

By Rachael VAUGHAN ROAN Panther is a young man going places. More specifically, he will be on his way to Brazil this month after visiting China last year. How did he earn his ticket to travel to travel to these two exotic locations? Through the sport of futsal. Futsal, a variant of the sport of soccer, is played on a hard court which is similar in size to a basketball court and mainly played indoors. Futsal is also played with a smaller, harder ball which when combined with the harder surface, makes controlling the ball a much more difficult proposition than the more traditional ball used in soccer. The result is a fast and skilful game that relies on a player’s imagination and creativity to create chances. In fact, futsal has been credited with providing the many skilful players with the foundation they required to go on and not only wear the yellow of Brazil in the Football World Cup, but to win the whole competition.

q Roan Panther, Irrawang High School student and Futsal star in the making.
Roan started playing Futsal after attending a school holiday camp 3 years ago. This experience led Roan to play socially in a competition held at Maitland and through this he decided to try out for the NNSW Futsal team where he won selection and went on to represent them in Sydney in January. His efforts at the Gol Brasil Academy bore fruit when he was selected to represent Australia at the Pearl River Tournament in China last August. And now, in just a couple of weeks, Roan will find himself in Brazil for another futsal adventure. Roan told News Of The Area, “My motto in life is ‘Strive for Greatness’, and it’s what I say to myself when I’m working towards goals.” “It’s my goal to continually improve, and I’m really excited for the next level Brazil is going to take me to.” News Of The Area wishes Roan the very best of luck with this representative tour.
