Adopt, Don’t Shop By Jo FINN OWNING a new pet is even more meaningful when it involves saving a life. President of Hunter Animal Rescue Caroline Hawkless said their main mission is “giving vulnerable animals a second chance to find a loving forever home”. Hunter Animal Rescue saves the lives of companion animals left abandoned or unclaimed in local pounds, by providing temporary homes and rehabilitation, and rehoming animals. The organisation brought approximately 400 animals into care in 2016. It is easy to fall for a cute puppy or kitten, but responsible ownership involves considering “the total life cycle of the pet,” Ms Hawkless said. Potential owners should “think in advance” and consider
factors including children growing up and losing interest, home and yard security, quality care, and financial considerations. “Seeing the feedback from families who have adopted our foster animals and the obvious joy and enrichment all have gained as a result is the most rewarding part of the role,” Ms Hawkless said. But there are significant challenges including “realising that friendly and excitable large dogs and purring, head-butting, sweet adult cats are not as popular as puppies and kittens and stay in foster care a lot longer,” Ms Hawkless told News Of The Area. Ms Hawkless said there were several ways people could assist Hunter Animal Rescue. “Foster – if you can’t foster – volunteer – if you can’t volunteer – donate – if you can’t

MANY residents in Medowie and surrounding areas have been waiting for years for news about the National Broadband Network (NBN) being connected.
The politically controversial communications network was first announced by then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and has undergone a number of changes since that time. Medowie residents keen to use the internet for business, study, and leisure activities have been waiting with baited breath for an announcement of when it will arrive in Medowie. Despite problems with connecting other types of internet and slow speeds, the NBN has remained an elusive pipedream. However, with new information
about the NBN, residents of Medowie may finally have the NBN connected. Although the website for information about the NBN roll out had stated that there are no plans for the NBN roll out in Medowie, that information has recently changed. Federal Member for Paterson Ms Meryl Swanson MP has received information about the Medowie build that is said to cover Medowie, Williamtown, Salt Ash, Tanilba Bay, Mallabula, and Lemon Tree Passage. In response to questions put to the Federal Member, a statement provided to Medowie News Of The Area by Ms Meryl Swanson MP, stated, “I am pleased that the NBNCo is finally listing dates for residents in areas such as Medowie, Williamtown, and Salt Ash.” “The NBNCo website is stating that the NBN will be available in these areas in the second half of 2018.” “Advice I have received from NBNCo directly suggests that this build may be completed slightly earlier than this,” Ms Swanson said. “As the local Federal Member, I

AS a young lad, Daniel Marquez helped his grandfather, the late Luis Rodriguez, on the farm and had the opportunity to learn his farming skills from a very experienced tomato grower, amongst other things. With the passing of his grandfather just over two years ago, Daniel took it upon himself to do something in his grandfather’s honour as a way of thanking him for teaching him the skills he now has as a farmer and continuing to farm with the passion his grandfather had for the land. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Tomatoes in Abundance in Abundance Road Medowie is back in operation with a new generation of farmers and techniques in the same street, just a different property. Daniel told News Of
The Area, “I wanted to do something special to honour a great man, and to also provide a quality service to the families of Medowie.” Daniel is a trained chef and has a passion for cooking with fresh fruit and vegetables. He is growing his produce following organic practices, and his produce is chemical free. Tomatoes in Abundance has been closed since Christmas and will reopen on 12 January, 2017 with fresh produce consisting of his muchloved tomatoes, capsicums, Lebanese eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, radish, cauliflower, broccoli, peaches, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes and garlic, just to name a few. He will also have figs, watermelon and plums in the coming weeks. Daniel will this year be selling mixed fruit and veggie boxes for anyone

have been working hard to ensure that the NBN is rolled out to every corner of the Paterson electorate as soon as possible.” “I will continue to liaise with NBNCo to ensure that residents of Medowie, Williamtown, and Salt Ash receive the NBN at the soonest date possible.” Ms Swanson went on to state, “When the Prime Minister was the Communications Minister and moved away from Labor’s superior FTTP/ FTTH NBN plan, he stated that every Australian would have access to the NBN by the end of 2016; this was obviously a desperate claim by a desperate Minister in a desperate Department.” This paper previously reported on the frustrations of citizens in an article published 19 July, 2016. This is an ongoing issue that needs fixing if Medowie is to receive an adequate internet speed to enable businesses to get on with what they need to do to be successful. “We have lived in the place now for 18 months and this corner has had five accidents since we have been here, there that we know of, and possible others that we don’t.” Mr McDonald said the road has others problems all pointing to concerns of residents believing the road is unsafe. “It is very prone to accidents due to the speed and nature of the road. It is subject to Hoon’s skidding around the corner also,” he said. “The bus stop is right there also which brings some concern to those of us in the street who have children, catching the bus to and from school.” “We think something needs to be done to slow the traffic and mitigate the Hoon’s from making this (section of road) a joy ride,” Mr McDonald said. In relation to this terrible accident on Monday, Mr McDonald said, “To any of the family of this women please feel free to lay flowers at the scene should you wish.” “Our prayers are with you and we pray that you feel the love of Jesus at the most distressing time.” “If we are home and you want to talk we would be happy to talk and pray with you.” “Or if you just need a cup of tea, drink or water or help please ring the door bell. Don’t Drown in Distractions By Jo FINN
A COMBINATION of the holiday season, extreme heat and alcohol has created the perfect storm for drowning deaths in NSW. Although any person of any age can drown, the statistics for males are sobering. According to the 2016 National Drowning Report by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia (RLSSA), 83% of the 280 people who drowned in the 2015-16 financial year were males. Port Stephens is paradise for water enthusiasts, but Hunter Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving NSW Tanya Brunckhorst urged men to seriously consider their safety at all times and the decisions they make in relation to boating, fishing and swimming. “We see higher levels
adopt a life
of alcohol consumed and basically a disregard for safety equipment such as life jackets. In some cases men are ignoring weather warnings and venturing out into rough conditions,” Ms Brunckhorst said. The highest risk group is males between 25 and 34, but under fives drowning in pools is also a huge concern. “Drowning is silent and happens very quickly. Everyday distractions such as going inside to turn off the oven can lead to irreversible tragedies,” she said. “Last summer 14 children lost their lives to drowning in backyard pools.” Tomaree Aquatic Centre is a partner pool with the Royal Life Saving Society and conducts the RLSSA Water Smart Program. The next program runs from 16-20 January and includes a 30-minute
swimming and water safety lesson for five consecutive days. In partnership with RLSSA, Tomaree Aquatic Centre also operates the Keep Watch program. Centre Manager Suellen Goyne stressed the importance of parents staying within an arm’s reach of children under five. “Lifeguards aren’t babysitters,” Ms Goyne said. “The mobile phone culture is an issue; parents get distracted.” For under fives and non-swimmers, a parent or guardian needs to be in the water at all times and within an arm’s reach of the child. The pool issues yellow wristbands for under fives and orange wristbands for nonswimmers, which act as an alert and reminder to parents and guardians, as well as pool lifeguards.

FROM Page 1 donate – share our story with friends and family who may be able to.” The prospect of sidestepping the sometimes challenging puppy stage helped local resident Nikki Shilling with her decision to adopt. The choice was even easier when a dog at Rutherford RSPCA made the selection for her. “Myah didn’t bark and she went running up to [my son] Oli and licked him through the big pen. We hung out with her for a while and played and it felt like she chose us, which was the idea,” Nikki said. For Nikki, pets are a life-long commitment and there are important questions to ask before taking the plunge. “I’ve had neighbours before who had a Kelpie pup chained up most of the day alone while they were at work. That’s not fair,” Nikki said. Information on pet adoption can be found at www.hunteranimalrescue. com.au or www.adoptapet.com.au.

THE blue water holiday centre of Port Stephens, 2½ hours north of Sydney, is renowned for its beautiful bays such as Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Salamander Bay. And now Port Stephens boasts a new bay – Splash Bay – a water park attraction that officially opened at Oakvale Farm and Fauna World on January 7, 2017. Opening in time for summer crowds to Port Stephens to enjoy its eight water play features, Splash Bay is one of Oakvale Farm and Fauna World’s biggest new attractions in its 37year history as one of the area’s most popular family attractions. The year-round Splash Bay water park – free for
all park visitors to use – offers interactive water features inspired by the wildlife park’s fauna including a crocodile bucket dunker, a python spray tunnel and a koala water cannon as well as eight new electric barbecues and undercover seating for up to 250 people – ideal for lunches, birthday parties and work functions. Visitors who flock to the popular fauna park should now pack their swimmers and towels with them, with little kids and ‘big kids’ all invited to cool down in the water park while visiting Oakvale’s 250 species of animals including pythons, crocodiles, alligators and also friendly fauna which wander freely around the park eager to meet visitors and their pellets of food available

SATURDAY saw McCauley’s Bottle and Veggie shop at Salt Ash give away their $10,000 ‘tinnie time’ loyalty prize. The competition which has been running for three months gave all loyalty club members who spent over $50 in store the opportunity to enter. The winner was drawn at 11am from accumulated entries in a sealed fishing bucket and transferred to a large broccoli box for the draw. The event was streamed live on their Facebook page and drawn by a staff member. Deb Moroney was the lucky winner, with her purchase on 15 October 2016. She was not present at the time the competition was drawn, however, a few hopeful customers were. Deb will be given the opportunity to either accept the boat worth $10,000 or receive $6,000 cash.
John McCauley, co-owner at the shop, told News of the Area: “The whole draw was about giving back to our lucky, loyal customers who are with us all year round.” “The family business has been here for 48 years and this is one of the biggest promotions to date,” Mr McCauley said. The business would also like to thank Bay Boat Sales in Salamander Bay for providing the tinnie that has been featured inside the shop for months. “The two most important aspects of the draw were our loyal members and super doopa staff,” John said. Peter Boshev, the shops other co-owner, added: “We’re hoping this may become an annual event for those who always support us.” q Staff members Cathy, John, Peter and Sue with the winning ticket.

River Diesel Leak The leak has been traced back to small break in a fuel line at the Port Stephens Council Works Depot.
By Jo FINN
THE NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is investigating a series of hydrocarbon discharges into the Hunter River at Raymond Terrace. A spokesperson from the EPA told News Of The Area that the leak has been traced back to small break in a fuel line at the Port Stephens Council Works Depot. Port Stephens Council was first made aware of the diesel leak on 15 December 2016 via a call to the Environmental Line from a concerned community member. Acting Port Stephens Council general manager Mike McIntosh said that as soon as Port Stephens Council was notified of the spill, they contacted the EPA and have been working closely with them ever since. Port Stephens Council was served a Clean Up Notice which outlined a series of control measures including ensuring no hydrocarbons left the premises via stormwater discharges and engaging a petro chemical specialist

q Port Stephens Council’s Acting General Manager Mike McIntosh. to identify the source and reason for the incident. Remediation measures included “pumping all potentially contaminated stormwater into storage tankers on site and disposing at a licensed waste facility,” Mr McIntosh said. Following the initial spill, a power overload resulted in a second incident. “Early on the morning of 2 January, a power overload on site caused our pumps to fail, which exacerbated the situation,” Mr McIntosh said. “The EPA attended the site and directed Port Stephens
Council to install extra booms to manage the risk of any further discharges to the River,” an EPA spokesperson said. “We also noted that the majority of the hydrocarbon was contained in the stormwater system and the sheen had reduced in size.” Residents in the vicinity of the leak have been contacted by Port Stephens Council. “We letterboxed all residents in the vicinity of Boomerang Park on 23 December outlining what had occurred and have subsequently held a number of individual conversations with community members,” Mr McIntosh said. “We then doorknocked and letterboxed local residents again on 6 January and we'll correspond with them again once we have any new information to hand,” he said. Mr McIntosh encouraged residents with any concerns or information to contact Port Stephens Council. Initial contact can be made via the customer service line on (02) 4980 0255.

My mother removes the stems from vineripened tomatoes so they pass as common ones and cost less. Is this wrong?
Ms VJ, Bulahdelah
I don’t know, VJ. It depends if you think paying for one DVD and shoving the other one up your jumper is wrong. Or if you think shaking the plastic guide dog Labrador until it coughs up some loose change is immoral. Look, I’ll admit when you have to use the self-serve stations at the supermarket, it is tempting to weigh your gourmet asparagus as brushed potatoes. It’s understandable, when they keep running ‘buy two when you only want one’ deals, that you want to engage in some payback. But you must stop your mother from travelling down the slippery slope of criminality. I mean it might start as a simple tomato vine extraction, but things can go terribly wrong. Soon she’ll be hanging with the wrong crowd in aisle three, doing strange things with protein powder and couscous. Next she’ll be loitering with the weird frozen goods crew. You know, the ones with frost-bitten hands and icy stares. You’ve got to call her out, VJ. You can wean her with the ‘free fruit for annoying kids’ if you like, or else go cold turkey. In fact grab a cold turkey, knock her out and take her 12 items to the express aisle where there’s no temptation, oh, apart from the chocolates, the cigarettes and the chewing gum. Okay, I give up. Just order takeaway. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

relief to the situation, so to be asked to be a part of that was amazing.” “To see the kids smile and laugh as they almost stepped into their sunsets was just magical.” “I enjoyed it so much I am happy to help again with another class later in the year,” Ms Orr said. The Community Wellbeing program has door knocked, letter box dropped and used social media to engage with the community
and plan events that appeal to all ages. So far the community has successfully planned a morning relaxation class and community cuppa with attached creche, an evening yoga class, two movie nights, and a family beach day. They have received confirmation to run another term of the community cuppa, relaxation class and yoga class to begin within the next few weeks.

Local By Rachael VAUGHAN WHEN it comes to summer in Australia, the game of cricket is second to none. In recent times, Women’s Cricket has enjoyed some much-deserved publicity. In fact, the WBBL is being televised on free-to-air television this season. This kind of exposure is sure to make an impact on the many young girls who would like to emulate some of the stars they are now watching on television. One such youngster is 11-year-old Ashlie Stapleton. Ashlie started playing cricket as a nine-year-old with the Medowie Cricket Club and has loved every minute of it. Ashlie is also a talented player. Ashlie is a member of the Newcoasters team in the state-wide Mollie Dive Cup competition. Making the Newcoasters

team is a great achievement in that the team is made up of players from both the Newcastle and Central Coast regions. Only last week, Ashlie and her teammates competed in the Ron Arendts Memorial shield, a four-day competition that has been held in Newcastle since 2007. Outside of the Newcoasters, Ashlie was also selected in the Hunter region team to play in the PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association) state competition last year. It’s no secret, Ashlie loves cricket. But there is a little more to it than that. Ashlie told News Of The Area, “I love cricket because when you play it, even when you have a great game, there’s always something to improve on.” “I love working in a team with my friends to have the
best game possible. “I love training just as much as I love playing and I am lucky to have great coaches in all the teams I play in,” Ashlie said. With an attitude like that, we may well see Ashlie in the WBBL one day.
q Eleven-year-old Ashlie Stapleton has a love for the game.
