Art Show Success By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Gavin Smith, Helen Riemann, Kate Washington, Lorraine Williams, Jan Dobbie and Adrienne Bayly at the opening of the Medowie Arts and Craft Show.

THE Medowie Lions Club Art and Craft Show has had yet another successful year, with a wonderful number of entrants in this year’s Show across the many and varied categories. The Craft entrants were bigger and better than any previous year, showing the increased interested in this yearly community run Lions project. The organisers opened the Show on Friday evening, to a crowd of special guests and invitees. Art and Craft Show Coordinator Helen Riemann told News Of The Area “It is our fifth year running the Show this year, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how it went.” “The Art entrants were excellent and the craft items were received so well by our visitors to the show.” “The Steampunk display drew a lot of interest as well.”

PORT Stephens residents are being encouraged to ‘check under their beds’ in the lead up to next month’s Illuminate Boomerang Park Festival to be held at the famous Raymond Terrace parklands. Held on the 18 November, the festival, which has light as the central theme, aims to bring the community together in a way that celebrates history and looks to the future of the 50 acre, Council owned parklands. Medowie historian, author, and member of

the Raymond Terrace Historical Society, Mrs Yvonne Fletcher along with co-author and fellow historian Mr John Gillam, have been undertaking research in the lead up to the event; uncovering important history about the Port Stephens area. The focus of their research was an elaborate and framed certificate offered to the Historical Society by Ms Cherylanne Bailey from Port Stephens Council. The certificate has a long history, having been presented to then-Mayor of Port Stephens, Mr Lot Bishop at the World’s

and celebrated.” The People’s Choice award went to Linda Camac, for her beautiful artwork. The photography award was taken out by Mandy Ellis for her beautiful entry. The Junior award went to Zac Mason.

q A Russian Blue kitten saved by Cat Rescue Port Stephens recently, the same breed a Medowie man was arrested for hurting. and made a full recovery. He has since been adopted into a loving home. Acts such as this highlight the integral work of those in our community who seek to care for animals in desperate and vulnerable situations. Cat Rescue Port Stephens devotes their time to rescuing kittens and cats, caring for them and rehoming them to safe and suitable homes. They recently had a litter of Russian blue kittens like Gizmo who required around the clock Columbian Exposition, the 1893 World Fair held in Chicago, USA. Mrs Fletcher told Medowie News Of The Area, “This is an example of how easily history can be lost.” “Without Ms Bailey saving it from the rubbish, it would never have been known about, an important piece of Port Stephens’ history.” For history buffs, the certificate and medal will be on display at the Illuminate festival. There are other items of historical interest that the Historical Society are keen to locate and add to their growing collection of

artefacts from the Port Stephens community. One mystery item that still alludes the Society is a Cabbage Tree Hat and a medal and certificate awarded to Miss McDermott of Williamtown at the same World Fair in Chicago. Have you seen it, or anything else of interest? Check under your bed! Community Goes Pink Irrawang Ag student excels in October By Rachael VAUGHAN

By Rachael VAUGHAN

OCTOBER is the month of Breast Cancer awareness, and Medowie is turning Pink. A community fundraising event, aptly named ‘Unite In Pink’ has been planned for 28 October at 10am. Every day in Australia, around 50 women are told they have breast or gynaecological cancer, and twelve of those statistically succumb to the disease, according to the Pink Ribbon Organisation that supports fundraising and research into women’s cancer. With these statistics in mind, the ladies at Century 21 have joined forces with Medowie Woolworths and Thermomix consultant Amy Lochhead to put on a wonderfully pink celebration to raise much-needed funds to support research into cancer. The Unite In Pink celebration will have a number of activities for a gold coin donation, with every single cent going to the Charity total. Bring your gold coins along with you and donate to participate in the sausage sizzle, pink donuts, fairy floss

Medowie Woolworths will be on hand with their fresh fruit for kids program, and Imugi Fit Tae Kwon Do will be running demonstrations. A raffle with amazing prizes is also being run, with a Thermomix as first prize, complete with demonstration and cooking experience by Amy Lochhead. Second prize is a GHD platinum straightener and pink hair dryer.

Third prize is a giant block of Cadbury chocolate, weighing in at a whopping 10kg. Tickets are available at the Little Pantry Co. and the Century 21 office. Jane Blair told News Of The Area, “We are running this special event to do what we can for a very important cause.” “We’d love to see as many people as possible - come down and join us!”

in Newcastle in aid of Stewart House. This worthy institution was established in 1930 to give holidays by the sea for poor and undernourished children from the far west of the State. Many had never seen the

ocean and Stewart House, built on the waterfront at Curl Curl Beach in Sydney, gave them a much needed break from disadvantaged circumstances. Today, it hosts many city based children who need time out from troubled domestic situations. Lloyd, a volunteer for Stuart House, has a problem. He told News Of The Area, “I wrote to some 86 schools in the Hunter about our ‘Day at the Races’ (11 November) and the response was overwhelming; so much so that the 150 tickets have sold out!” “We are still running a raffle in tandem with the fund raising day and local support has been fantastic. There are over $4,000 in prizes up for grabs and the RSL and Club Lemon Tree can be thanked for the bulk of the donations.”

WHEN Agriculture Teacher Miss Tanya Henry left Irrawang High School a few months ago for a permanent position at Gosford High School, she requested that any monies raised for her staff farewell gift be given to Year 9 Medowie student Karly Page to attend the annual Live Cattle Assessment Course at Tocal Agricultural College. The popular three-day course attended by around 65 participants including school students, was run by the Angus Breed Society and held last week. The Beef Cattle Assessment Course is now in its 38th year. It has been widely recognised as the most practical and hands-on beef cattle selection course of its kind in Australia as well as internationally. The course embraces both the newcomer and the experienced alike. The course itinerary consisted of a range of activities including lectures on meeting market specifications, bull selection, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and how to use them, followed up with hands-on, practical assessment of cattle provided from Tocal and well-established cattle breeders in the local area.

q Karly Page and Tanya Henry attending the Live Cattle Assessment Course at Tocal College. The two days were jam-packed with a mix of theoretical and practical experiences. Through participation in this course, Karly has made many new contacts in the industry, experienced living on-site at Tocal Agricultural College and gained opportunities to complete future work experience on working farms.

She also received a certificate to add to her resumé. Karly is pictured with her certificate, along with Ms Henry, who also attended the course. We are thankful to have teachers like Miss Henry willing to give any student the opportunity to excel in an area they are passionate about.

Dear PL,

Miss PL, Williamtown

You know, there’s people out there who have a ‘my door is always open’ approach. I, my dear friend, am not one of them. When people drop in, you want to be prepared with some mineral water in a blue carafe, and a platter of Brie, quince paste and water crackers. You want jazz music playing in the background, the cushions plumped, the toilet fragrantly scented with lemon and ginger essence and the children skipping around the garden collecting artistically-shaped pieces of driftwood for their nature project. You also want people to think that you live like that all the time, in a sort of effortless state befitting an Instagram photo or two. Then you can glide across your polished floorboards and say, “Oh, Simone, how lovely to see you. What an unexpected, though delightful surprise. I was just baking some poppy-seed bread. Excuse those papers on the table; it is the documentation for my three sponsor children. Let me move it aside. Cheese and crackers? An Earl Grey tea?” If friends drop in unannounced, they’ll see that you’re still in your pyjamas at lunchtime, the sink is full of dishes, the kids are drinking lime cordial and watching Game of Thrones, and you look like Iggy Pop instead of Iggy Azalea, which is never a good thing. If there’s an unexpected knock at the door, you can always hide in the pantry. I do this a lot, which is why I’ve gained five kilos in the past month. Or get a gate, or a goat or a German Shepherd and a sign that says, ‘Enter at your own risk’. When visiting others, the correct etiquette is to call first. This allows time for frantic cushion arrangement, dirty dish disposal and scented candle preparation (as a minimum). It’s just good manners.

Carpe diem, Jasminda

THE commencement of roadworks on Cabbage Tree Road, Williamtown, has been met with controversy, with some championing the works, and others condemning the move as yet another hurdle for residents in the Red Zone, and part of the Cabbage Tree Road cancer cluster linked to nearby PFAS contamination. Port Stephens Council and Roads and Maritime Services announced this week that the road’s westbound lane with be closed to all traffic for at least two months. Residents within this area will be required to take a minimum 30 minute detour as they come and go from work or school, taking a 25km detour to go around the 1.6km stretch of road works. Cabbage Tree Road is a State road and recent estimates state that 14,000 vehicles use the road each day, including local residents, airport traffic, heavy vehicles and school buses. The residents on Cabbage Tree Road have been battling different levels of government for two-and-a-half years over a proposed sand mine

in a residential area, PFAS contamination from the Williamtown RAAF Base, Williamtown alongside the recent discovery of a cancer cluster among local residents. Kate Washington, MP said, “The timing of these road works could not be worse.” “I don’t think anyone in the State government understands the stresses that residents on this stretch of road are already under and to now do this to them, is insensitive in the extreme.” “I know residents welcome overdue maintenance to the road, however we need the RMS and Port Stephens Council to not put undue stress on this community and find a solution that will allow residents full access to their homes.” “Forcing residents to travel over 25km to avoid a 1km section of roadwork is absurd, so Council and RMS must present a workable option to local residents which doesn’t lock them out of their homes,” she said. But Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC said that this is an important project for Williamtown. “The Williamtown precinct is a growth area, especially as Newcastle Airport expands in the

years ahead with international services, and the stationing of Joint Strike Fighter squadrons at RAAF Williamtown,” Mr MacDonald said. He said delays are to be expected, and need to be planned for so that this important upgrade can take place. The NSW Government has provided the funding to upgrade this 1.6 kilometre section of Cabbage Tree Road to reduce ongoing maintenance costs and improve motorist safety. Port Stephens Council will carry out the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services. The site has been established this week with major project work starting on Monday 9 October, weather permitting. This work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and is expected to be completed by Friday 1 December this year. For more information on this project visit the Roads and Maritime website at rms.nsw.gov.au. concern though, because our suite of online services makes it easier than ever before to get your return in on time,” she said. “If you plan to lodge your own tax return using the ATO’s online service myTax, you need to lodge by 31 October 2017. If something happens and you miss the deadline, you should lodge as soon as you can to minimise penalties.” The ATO receives many far-fetched excuses from late lodgers, such as: “My paperwork flew out the car window when I was on my way to see the accountant.” Or how about this one: “My accountant has gone

to prison. He is working on it, but it’s taking longer than normal because he can’t access a computer.” News Of The Area’s personal favourite is: “My ex-wife burnt everything belonging to me, including all of my tax records.” If you are having difficulties meeting your tax obligations, you don’t need an excuse – you just need to contact the ATO as soon as possible so they can help. If you are having difficulties paying a tax debt, you can call the ATO to set up a payment plan. Depending on your circumstances, the ATO may even be able to set one up online.

A likely excuse

FROM an accountant in prison to paperwork flying out the window, Australians are pretty good at coming up with excuses as to why they haven’t lodged their tax returns on time. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers that there is just one month left to lodge their own tax returns. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that over 2.5 million people have already lodged their own returns via myTax, with another 5.2 million people lodging via an agent, and she expects millions more in October. “The upcoming deadline shouldn’t be cause for

THE Irrawang CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) students and teachers are at it again, embarking last week on their ‘Beyond the Black Stump’ Queensland CAPA Tour. After 12 months of planning, fundraising and organising, the CAPA students, who consist of drum corps, dancers, drama students and singers, are on their way to perform at several destinations across the State. Their trip will include a performance at Miles State School, before travelling to Blackall to locate the Black Stump and visit the Woolscour Museum. From there they will

told News Of The Area, “We are so incredibly proud of our CAPA department, and their wonderful yearly tour.” “These students truly show the standard of quality public education our school provides, teamed with wonderful extra inclusions available to our students in recognition for all their hard work and talents.” “We are grateful to the community, our CAPA families and the wonderful support of Raymond Terrace Marketplace for ensuring this year’s trip went ahead, and these students are able to take part in this amazing experience.” Congratulations to the CAPA students of Irrawang High School, we look forward to sharing news and photos of your tour next week.

The CAPA team will then visit the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, before travelling on to Lake Maraboon near Emerald, through to Dalby and on to performances on the Gold Coast. On their final stretch, they will wow the crowds at Dreamworld, before making their way back home. Irrawang High School representative Lue Fagan

NOMINATIONS are now open for the Port Stephens Annual Awards, which celebrate the people who have made an outstanding contribution to our local community. Held on Australia Day, the awards are an opportunity to formally recognise community members who make Port Stephens a great place to live, work and play. Elizabeth Akerman, Council’s Acting Community Development and Engagement Coordinator, said this year sees the addition of a new category. “We’re really excited about the introduction of the ‘Cultural Endeavour’ category, which will be awarded to someone who has added to our cultural experience, whether that be through art, music, language, education or events, to name a few,” Ms Akerman said. “As always, we’re also seeking nominations for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, the Port Stephens Medal and Sportsperson of the Year,” she added. David Sams received the Port Stephens Medal last year for his tireless community work, including his part in founding the Port Stephens

MEDOWIE Sports Council, made up of representatives of every sporting group in Medowie, has an enviable statistic they can be proud of, but one that is not commonly known in the community. Every sporting club in Medowie has their very own portable Defibrillator. Purchased through funds provided by the Sports Council through Port Stephens Council, the idea to provide a Defibrillator for each sporting club came directly after the loss of a man’s life at a sporting event in Medowie a couple of years ago. With Sudden Cardiac Arrest being one of the leading causes of death in Australia, having a Defibrillator in your workplace or community club can make the difference between life and death. They are easy to use, maintain, and can save a life prior to the ambulance arriving. Councillor Chris Doohan

told News Of The Area, “It was a no-brainer to encourage and support the application for funding to be spent on these life-saving machines.” “It was a well supported application through Port Stephens Council, and I am proud to say we are now a q Councillor Chris Doohan is proud community with of Medowie’s Defibrillator status. every sporting club protected with a Defibrillator.” A sporting club in “It is a tribute to how much Karuah is hoping to add our community cares about a Defibrillator to their each other, that people would Clubhouse, after the work so hard to provide an devastating loss of a player asset like this for each club,” last year. he said. Mr Gillespie said that while people rarely volunteer for the accolades, the Port Stephens Awards are the perfect way to let someone know they are appreciated. “If someone has enriched your life and the lives of others of their own free will, then nominating them will enable their invaluable hard work get acknowledged,” he said. He said the Port Stephens Annual Awards are a way to give back to those who give so much. “There are people in our community who are true doers, who sacrifice their time and energy to build meaningful connections and get things done,” Mr Sams said. “I know that those who do extraordinary things for our community are often the most humble, and this awards program is the perfect opportunity to give thanks to them for their tireless efforts,” he added. FRIDAY the 13th is considered by many to be an unlucky day in Western superstition, but for Medowie

it’s a lucky night indeed and you’re all invited to the party. The Medowie Bull n Bush is our News Of The Area feature entertainment venue this week, a small fry venue

that rocks hard to rival the big venue competitors. On Friday 13 October they will host The Twangsters for a night of class rock ‘n’ roll that is guaranteed to keep the

They will keep you entertained with music from artists including Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Eddie Cochran, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, The Shadows and Traveling

Wilburys. The Twangsters are a three-piece band of very experienced players with many years of gigging in Australia and overseas. The band plays classic rock ‘n’ roll style music from the 50s to the 80s and features bass, drums and

guitar, with all three sharing the lead vocals. The Twangsters keep the music rockin’ all night. If you like what you hear on the night, they will be back on local ground at Tilligerry RSL for Melbourne Cup day on November 7 as their alter egos, The Fake Four.

New Mayor addresses ratepayers MAYOR Ryan Palmer has accepted an invitation to be guest speaker at the Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association (TRRA) Annual General Meeting commencing at 7.00pm on 17 October in the Auditorium of the Nelson Bay Bowling Club. “This will be an opportunity for Tomaree residents to hear the mayor’s vision for the future of Port Stephens and be informed on some of the changes he may have in mind for a new era of governance,” TRRA president Geoff Washington said. In the lead up to our September election the majority of candidates, including Ryan Palmer, supported initiatives directed at increased transparency and accountability for the council in its decision making and administration. “Reinstatement of live webcasting of council meetings was a welcome promise. q Mayor Ryan Palmer encouraged by a notice of motion in the Agenda for the 10 October Port Stephens Council meeting sponsored by the mayor and Cr Nell, which calls for the processes to be set in motion to bring back webcasting,” Mr Washington said. Residents who now have to travel up to 60 kms to Raymond Terrace to a meeting will again be able to watch proceedings from home. While some members of the previous council had concerns about the prospect of defamation actions, there are many councils across

NSW that webcast their meetings and have done so for some years. They have considered the risks and come down in favour of accountability. TRRA believes that live webcasting will lift the standard of debate and improve the overall conduct of council meetings. ‘’Members of the public should take this opportunity to meet our new mayor who is already demonstrating his commitment to increased accessibility,” Mr Washington said.

Stair Climbing Firefighters

MEDOWIE Brigade’s Deputy Captain, Louise McClelland, has been in the Rural Fire Service for just on 12 years. She set a goal this year to complete the Firefighters Climb for Motor Neurone Disease. Louise told News Of The Area, “We have a group of five from Medowie who signed up, and we have joined forces with fellow RFS members from East Maitland Brigade and an officer from our Lower Hunter District Fire Control to form the RFS Lower Hunter Stairclimb Team.” “Our goal as a group is to aim to raise $15,000, we are currently sitting at nearly $3,500, so still a way to go but I know there is more to bank yet.” “So any donations however small are so genuinely appreciated for this very

worthwhile cause,” she said. The climb is next Saturday 14 October at the Sydney Tower, consisting of 98 floors and 1504 steps in full firefighting gear, including breathing apparatus set and helmet. The RFS Lower Hunter Stairclimb Team meet up every second Sunday to train together for the last few months. They have climbed Tomaree Headland, the steps at Merewether Baths, Anzac Walk at Bar Beach and the Observation Tower in Newcastle at Queens Wharf. Each member has also had their own individual training program. Louise said “One of the East Maitland members lost his mother to this horrendous disease so has a deeply personal reason for completing the climb.”

“One of our Medowie members, Darryl Luck, will also carry a picture up the tower with him of local dad Brenton Teasdale, who lost his fight to MND last year.” “For me personally, I originally began this journey for my own reasons of increasing fitness to continue firefighting and proving I can do this at my age , but it has become so much more now.” “I want to raise awareness of this disease which doesn’t discriminate and to help raise as much money as possible to continue the research into finding a cure or at least stopping the progression of it,” she said. Streets Initiative.” “A chance to share my art on a street level and to a wider audience is just so exciting to me as an artist.” “I am honoured to have the opportunity Maitland City Council has offered to emerging artists like myself.” Denise is creating several chandeliers handcrafted using plastic bottles to celebrate the history of Maitland and shed light on plastic ocean pollution. These chandeliers will be installed along the Levee, the walkway along the Hunter River in Maitland. They will hang over the existing heritage style street lights, which will be visible both day and night. The process for these chandeliers involves Denise collecting bottles, washing and cutting them into circular shapes, sealing the edges and embellishing with oceanic inspired patterns. They are then threaded together to form chandeliers using cable ties, wire and poly tubing. Each one is unique and approximately 1.5 metres in length. Denise estimates she will use around 1000 bottles. She said “Though beautiful, shiny and delicate in appearance, I hope that my work will also demonstrate the ugliness to our plastic ocean pollution crisis.”

New buildings opened By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE Christian School has officially opened its impressive new administrative building, with a special ceremony held in front of a crowd of supporters and honoured guests. Medowie Christian School Principal Simon Herd opened the ceremony, welcoming Kate Washington MP, School Board Chair Dr Stuart Gray, Members of the Board of Trustees, special guest Mrs Maureen ‘Nanna’ Cole, Uncle Neville, Elder of the Worimi community, School Captains, students, colleagues, and friends. The new building features around 900 square metres of floor space and cost $3.5 million, with Commonwealth Government contributions totaling $760,000.

Simon Herd told the crowd at the ceremony that he was proud to stand in front of them and present this wonderful achievement for the school. “A school is not just an island by itself, it is part of the wider community: the community of church, the community of the local environment, your local government, all in all a major part of the fabric of the local community who come together to achieve far more than individually they could,” he said. He spoke of the new aspects to the building and the impact it would have on the overall culture of the school. “Modern facilities improve not only the school’s physical environment but also its learning culture,” he said. “However, the building

alone cannot infuse the vision and passion that guide the school’s development.” “It is the Christ-centred approach, the human relationships and interaction between teachers and students which will make the difference and ensure the new building supports higher levels of learning,” he said. Medowie Christian School is currently in the design phase of a new world-leading, student-focused STEM building that is due to commence construction in 2018. They are also proud to be launching a Prep program for four year olds in 2018 as they seek to provide a greater service to the community and ensure the best start for the learning journey of children at Medowie Christian School.

Live Bait the Secret

By Geoff WALKER

LIVE yakkas (yellowtail) caught around Cabbage Tree Island were the secret of success for two intrepid anglers recently. Jamie Culver from Salt Ash and a friend nailed two large snapper and about six smaller ones around Broughton Island but a rising westerly gale made things uncomfortable for them so they headed inshore. They then took up station between the two bridges at Karuah for some night fishing.

q Simon Herd, Maureen (Nanna) Cole, Tiarna Bezuidenhout (kinder student), Joshua Archer and Kathleen Churchill (school captains) Photo by Pete Neville

Jamie Culver with part of the catch.

Karuah is a renowned jewfish hot spot, particularly the deep holes in the eddies of the bridge pylons. Oyster Cove is also popular and indeed the Passage at Lemon Tree itself has been known to yield some very large Mulloway. The dynamic duo was not to be disappointed as the photo shows. Large snapper also enter the port in the summer months and old timers still talk of huge fish taken in holes off North Arm Cove and Soldiers Point. The late Tommy Gavin of Mallabula told of a snapper

he caught inside the port which was too heavy for the scales at the old Lemon Tree Passage corner store. He and his fishing partner George Harper had to cut it in half for the weigh in and it went 26lbs. That’s 11.8 kg. Anglers wanting to know the weight of big fish don’t need to look for scales. After measuring the fish from its mouth to the fork in the tail, just google: ‘fish length to weight converter’, scroll up the species required and all will be revealed.

Alyssa Impresses Selectors medowie@newsofthearea.com.au

q Alyssa Hogan impressed selectors with her soccer skills.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE has a new soccer star in the making, in tenyear-old Alyssa Hogan. The Wirreanda Public School student is kicking goals with her soccer achievements, and has added selection to the 2018 Emerging Jets 11 Years Girls Squad to her merit list. The Emerging Jets soccer program is in its fifth season this year. It is an integrated talented player pathway that provides development programs for players as young as nine years old. Last year we featured Alyssa in News Of The Area when she was selected in the Northern NSW SAP

think are up to the standard of the Emerging Jets.” “Alyssa was keen to accept the position with them, as she was wanting more of a challenge with her soccer.” “We are so proud of her, and how much effort she puts into everything she tries,” she said. This year Alyssa trained and played for Newcastle SAP twice per week, with one game on a saturday and a monthly gala day with

(Skill Acquisition Program) this season in the U/10s, and this new selection only further cements Alyssa’s potential as a future soccer champion. Alyssa’s mother Kristy Hogan told News Of The Area, “I was excited to speak to a person from the Emerging Jets program, who said that selectors had watched the teams play all this season, and that they had selected Alyssa as one of nine players who they

four or more games. With the Emerging Jets program, Alyssa will now train three days per week at Speers Point plus play on a weekend. This is a bigger step up for her, with the expectations of the players being at a very high standard. This impressive selection will help Alyssa on the track to furthering her passion for soccer.
