PORT Stephens Council will receive a $33,000 NSW Government grant to target litter in the Port Stephens LGA. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC announced last week that Port Stephens Council would receive a share of more than $1.2 million in grant funding for NSW litter initiatives under the government’s round 3 Council Litter Prevention grants program. “Councils know where their litter hotspots are and they know how to tackle them better than anyone,” Mr MacDonald said. Port Stephens Council

General Manager, Wayne Wallis said all funding that helps to combat littering is greatly appreciated. "Our region is renowned for its picturesque coastline and natural environment and this funding will help to reduce the impact of littering. “This is a great initiative and we'd like to thank the government for their contribution," Mr Wallis said. “This project will target litter at two main road sites leading to industry and tourist destinations. The project will build on Round 2 project activities including: training rangers; installing in-

car dash cam cameras in ranger vehicles; incar litter bag handouts; Hey Tosser signage and banners at key sites; periodic clean-ups; media campaigns; door knocking; enforcing patrols and mail outs. “The project will focus heavily on building partnerships with key business and community stakeholders to support the campaign.” Under the first two funding rounds, more than $2.5 million was awarded to almost 40 councils. Councils have subsequently reported an average litter reduction of 60 per cent at their

Environment Minister Mark Speakman said this anti-litter program would continue to help the government achieve one of the Premier’s 12 priorities, being the reduction of litter volume by 40 per cent by 2020. The Government has also announced a statewide Container Deposit Scheme, starting in July next year, to help meet this target. Mr Ben Callen from Medowie Meats donated all the meat for the Sausage Sizzle. Mr Callen told Medowie News Of The Area, “We heard the story and I thought they could do with a bit of help, so we jumped on board.” “You don’t realise how tough some people do it.” In addition to the Sausage Sizzle held on Friday 8 July, a Trivia Night is also scheduled to be held at the Bull ‘n’ Bush on Wednesday, 3 August. The event can cater for ten tables of ten people and there will also be an auction on the night which has fantastic prizes donated by local businesses such as a cruise. People are invited to attend the Trivia Night as patrons of the Bull ‘n’ Bush and to bid for items in the public auction. The Sausage Sizzle raised $249 for the King family. After an operation, initial chemotherapy, complications identified, and a scan carried out, an enlarged thymus gland was found, leading to Mr King’s Lymphoma Hodgkin diagnosis. The family has not had an easy 12 months and even though the arrival of a new baby should bring about joy and celebration the diagnosis of Mr King’s cancer one week after his daughter was born has marred that joy. Sausage Sizzle organiser and Coles employee, Ms Tina Brown told Medowie News Of The Area, “The people of Medowie are lovely and always want to help, so we put our heads together to think of what we could do to support the Kings.” “They have bills just like everyone else to pay and we are holding this Sausage Sizzle and the Trivia Night in August to help ease their burdens.”

News Of The Area

By Simone JOHNSON THE historic and well known ‘Raymond Terrace Sabre’ has spent 3 years being restored, and is finally located at Williamtown’s Fighter World. The A94-959 that was located in Beetles Park Raymond Terrace since 1981 acted as the silent symbol of the Raymond Terrace Lions Club community work. The placing of the monument 35 years ago coincided with the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of the RAAF Base at Williamtown and the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force. According to Trevor Boughton, “Perseverance, problem solving skills, aided by the Sabre’s rugged construction, overcame each difficulty and resulted in the safe arrival at the Terrace.” The Goldsprings Heavy Haulage Company of Rutherford NSW undertook the demounting of the dilapidated Sabre from its display column and transporting it to Fighter World on March 10, 2013. Taking three years to complete, the Sabre underwent immense

cleaning, replacing internal and outer panels, patching and filling holes in the skin and wing edges and sanding the entire outer surface back to bare metal. Generous donations by individuals and organizations helped with the restoration. A celebratory roll out of the newly refurbished aircraft took place at Fighter World in April 2016. It is currently situated out the front of Fighter World for all to see free of charge. Marketing Manager, Dick Coleman told News Of The Area, “Now that the Raymond Terrace Sabre is back on display it’s a perfect opportunity to see what the Fighter World volunteers are really capable of.” “Inside the main hangar you’ll not only be amazed at the many aircraft on display but also find the Norm Forrester Collection.” “Unique to Fighter World, it is undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest displays of hand built model aircraft,” he said. Open from 10am to 4pm everyday of the school holidays, the museum has a large variety of history on display as well as interactive tours and a café.

Murrook success

Together with 4/5 of NSW

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

I WISH to convey my congratulations to the Worimi Land Council and all the wonderful staff and helpers who made Friday at the Murrook Cultural Centre such a success. My grandkids had a ball, went home happy, with full bellies and show bags. What amazes me is the unity and lack of any trouble. I think it says a lot for our indigenous brothers and sisters. Thanks again, Jim Batt (Mununyali) q Medowie

Dear News Of The Area,

IF you are considering which school your children should attend, look to a school run by Principal Megan Elliott. She must be one of the most innovative educationalists in NSW. Megan knows the benefits of attending a small school and ensures students do not miss out on amazing experiences.

She has introduced countless innovations at Bobs Farm and previously Millers Forest PS. I'm a retired teacher who has been fortunate to have worked in schools run by Mrs Elliott. She is an outstanding Principal who understands the unique experiences and opportunities that small schools can offer. Greg Kentish

DO the residents realise that, they, together with 4/5 of NSW subsidise the city areas as regards Electricity. 4/5 of NSW is covered by Essential Energy and Endeavor Energy and pay an Electricity Supply Charge (SAC) [thats to have it go past your house] of around $1.60/ day plus extra, to the tune of 5c/Kw for each kilowatt hour. If you are privileged enough to live in the rest of the state, the area from the upper Hunter down to

Port Stephens then down to Bega on the South Coast, which includes Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, then, you are in an Ausgrid area. SAC here are almost half what we pay at 82c/ day and less rate per kilowatt. I informed the Member for Myall Lakes over 12 months ago and he and other National Party members do not seem particularly interested and why would they. They are not going to disrupt the goose that delivers the golden egg. One would think that the State National

members would try to do everything possible to break the divide between the city and country. Here, in the country, we pay higher, land rates, electricity, water and fuel. If the State is serious about encouraging people to the country through decentralisation, then, lets begin by making these basic costs fairer. I call upon our state representatives to address this inequity. John Alterator

To phase out chemical WHILE many airports and firefighting facilities have transitioned to firefighting foams that don’t contain perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), sources tell us that there are still some industries that use them. Firefighting foams containing PFOS and PFOA were used

extensively at Williamtown RAAF from the 1970s. Used foam was allowed to run off into the porous sand beds and enter the aquifer, leading to the current contamination of the water supply and a ban on commercial fishing in the area. Despite an international alert in 2003 from the makers of the foam to phase out the use

of this product,it is understood that Defence only began that phase out process in 2008. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said that the current State Government needs to develop a plan to phase out the use of these chemicals.

Repairs on the Hawk

News Of The Area

The transition to BAE’s total sustainment of the Hawk 127 began in October 2015.

BAE Systems Australia took over operational maintenance of the Hawk 127 Lead-In Fighter on Friday, 1 July, in an extension of its contract for in-service support of the Lead-In Fighter training system. This marks the transfer of first line Hawk maintenance from Royal Australian Air Force technicians to our partners at BAE Systems Australia, after 15 years of the present arrangements. As a result of the transfer, approximately 150 Royal Australian Air Force technicians across bases at Pearce and Williamtown are being reemployed across the current platforms and new weapon systems, such as the EA-18G Growler and the F35 Joint Strike Fighter. Officer Commanding 78 Wing, Group Captain

Terry van Haren, said Royal Australian Air Force engineers and technicians have a proud history of professional and dedicated service within Numbers 76 Squadron and 79 Squadron. “Collectively the Squadrons recently celebrated 100,000 hours of flying on the Hawk 127 aircraft without loss of life or aircraft.” “The men and women of 76 Squadron and 79 Squadron can be justly proud of their efforts, and they can look forward to an exciting career moving forward in the operational Air Force,” Captain van Haren said. The transition to BAE’s total sustainment of the Hawk 127 began in October 2015.

By Jenny BAXTER WHILE golf is generally known as a sport for all ages, genders and ability levels, it’s not often the course is full of players with their age still in single digits. Pacific Dunes Golf Course recently played

host to students in years 3-6 from Bob’s Farm Public School, as part of a 4-week program both at school and at the Medowie course. Part of the collaboration between the Australian Government’s ‘Sporting Schools’ initiative, the largest school-based sports participation program, and the ‘My Golf’ program, students were introduced to golf, focusing on areas

such as warm up, chipping, full swing games, golf knowledge and etiquette. Battling the windy conditions, the 16 lucky students were tutored by Pacific Dunes community golf coach, Amanda Burns. The Pacific Dunes course has recently adopted a new initiative, establishing a ‘Kids’ Course’, specifically designed to cater for the younger golfer.

Aqua coloured tees have been strategically placed to provide a 3800m, par 72 course for juniors. Pacific Dunes General Manager, Kurt Linde said, “The brand new kids’ course offers junior golfers the opportunity to play along side their parents and coaches to experience the course, tailored to suit their ability and strengths.” PGA Professional, Jamie

UNION

Charity Gala Day coming By Heather SHARP

q TEAM: Medowie Rugby Union Players prepare for the Charity Gala Day (Back Row, L-R) William Cook, Connor Stott-Lucas, Bowen Mason (Middle Row) Robert Cook (Front Row, L-R) Ben Murphy, Lachlan Murphy, Jackson Fuller, Oscar Cook.

MEDOWIE’S Rugby Union Club will be holding a Hunter Breast Cancer Fundraising Day on Saturday, 30 July from 9am at Boyd Oval. The Gala Day, open to the public, is the one day of the season that all teams from the club, U7s, U14s, and Seniors play their home games in Medowie on the same day. The Seniors game is scheduled for 3pm. Ms Kelly Mason, Committee Member at the Club, told Medowie News Of The Area, ”There will be face painting, fairy floss,

great food, sausage sizzle, and a raffle with fantastic prizes to be raffled.” “We are amazed at how much the community comes together for a good cause, it has been awesome, we are all proud to be Medowians.” Amongst the prizes, it has been announced that Australian Rugby Union has donated a signed Wallabies jersey to the Club for raffling. A generous Medowie local has also donated a framed and signed State of Origin Jersey to be auctioned on the day. CONTINUED Page 11
