Gala day ready for high school
THE transition from Year 6 to the big, wide world of high school isn’t always easy, but Wirreanda teacher Patrick Hay has seen that the transition is an easier one for the students of Irrawang High School’s feeder network. A full-time teacher and part-time triathlete, Mr Hay recognised the role sport could play to help knock down the barriers associated with starting high school.
MEDOWIE
The result was a roundrobin competition in soccer, touch football and netball encompassing Irrawang Primary School, Grahamstown Primary School, Wirreanda Primary School, Medowie Primary School and Irrawang High School. In addition to learning about sportsmanship and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, the Year 6 students and their soon- to-be peers
enjoyed a beneficial day that will hopefully stand them in good stead when the high school year commences in 2017. “It can be a very difficult time for some of the students when the time comes to start Year 7 with moving to a new school and taking on all of the changes that high school brings.” Mr Hay told News Of The Area. “So, we thought it might be a good idea to get all of the feeder schools together, along with some of their older counterparts from Irrawang High and put them all together

Season for scams
LOCAL Police are warning community members to beware of scam-artists trying to take advantage of Christmas generosity. “They sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes although no charity is involved,” they say. Police advise residents to always ask for identification, say no to the scamartist’s requests and phone police. Internet scams are also common at this time of the year and can be reported to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network at www.acorn.gov.au

Christmas Lunch for the Probus Club By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie had their Christmas Lunch recently at Club Lemon Tree. The majority of members were able to attend, unfortunately three were unable due to sickness on the day. The caterers were fantastic and packed the three ill members their three course lunch, and other Club members were able to deliver their lunches to them. The day was a great success with an entrée of canapés, followed by alternate mains of scrumptious pork belly and chicken supreme. Dessert was a trio of desserts for each person,
consisting of Christmas pudding, a pavlova roulade and a raspberry jelly mousse. There were lucky door prizes of wonderful Christmas baskets, all prepared by one of the members from donations from members of the Club. Kevin Tomlinson, Secretary of the Probus Club, told News Of The Area, “The Club certainly lived up to the motto of Probus of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun, with members thoroughly enjoying the lunch, which was the last function for this year.” There was also a presentation of 10 Year Pins to three members who have achieved that milestone. The Combined Probus Club of Medowie meets at the Medowie Community Centre

Mentors and Volunteers treated to lunch
The unsong works are valued
WITH a focus this week on volunteers, the Irrawang students who honoured their school volunteers deserve recognition. International Volunteer Day celebrates the frequently unsung work of those who assist without financial gain and Irrawang High School values and appreciates the volunteers who come into their school on a regular basis to assist their students. Volunteers at the school come in many different forms, and for many different reasons.
Last week, Principal Mr Baxter welcomed volunteers from the school Canteen, P&C, Plan-it-Youth program and the Breakfast Club to a ‘thank you’ three course luncheon. This very special luncheon was prepared by Chef and TAS teacher Mr Chris Enright, and his Year 12 Hospitality students, along with assistance from Tash Alexander and Mrs Noone. Mentors and volunteers on the day remarked that the restaurant quality food was amazing. Students had been

However, the importance of community ties have not been lost on the Marauders despite their success. “The rugby club knows the importance of keeping a close connection with the community and has ensured this is the main priority for the
club to survive.” Mr Murphy told News Of The Area. “To this end, all home games remain the same in regards to playing at Boyd Oval as normal and our players will continue to wear the Medowie jumper with pride.” Despite the fact the 2017 draw is yet to be released, Medowie News Of The Area
planning the event for weeks leading up to it, and spent all morning preparing. The function will also count towards their Certificate II in Hospitality. On behalf of the volunteers and mentors, Planit-Youth volunteer Jan Noake thanked Mr Enright and the students for such a beautiful three course meal, which was followed by freshly brewed coffees and boutique teas. Mrs Noake told News Of The Area, “We all volunteer at Irrawang High School because we care about kids and appreciate the fantastic work done at the school, and want to support them.” “To be thanked in such a way was truly amazing, it was
in her personal life.” “This young woman mentioned that butterflies gave her hope for a brighter future, while we were talking the poem The Butterfly began forming in my mind, and I began writing it the second I got home.” The writing bug had bitten Gwenda, and her collection of poems quickly grew. Encouraged by friends, Gwenda decided to publish her poems. At 73, Gwenda’s dream came true with the release of her first book ‘Poetry of Life’. Gwenda told News Of The Area, “Every subject is real, it is life as I see it.” The book is available for purchase at Raymond Terrace Newsagency. You can also purchase ‘Poetry of Life’ on Amazon, Google and XLIBRIS, in either print form or electronic form for Kindle. Gwenda has plans after Christmas to commence work on her second book, and has high aspirations and dreams that her book may one day be picked up by a large publishing company to help her to share her work further afield.
understands that two full rounds of Premier Rugby will be played at Boyd Oval during the season. More details will be made available as they come to hand, but in the meantime, the club should be congratulated on their achievements thus far. Bring on the 2017 season.

DO you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. This week’s conundrum comes from Soldiers Point. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. MY neighbour’s dog barks incessantly. Port Stephens Council has asked me to keep a diary, but I’ve got better things to do. Mr PR, Soldiers Point. Dear PR,
DID the local council give you any diary guidelines? Because being asked to keep
OPINION
a diary sounds like a dream come true. Now if my literary agent had asked me to keep a diary, I would currently be cashing in on the movie rights. Picture Breakfast at Tiffany’s with a bit of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest thrown in for good measure. Instead I’m sweating like a pig in a shabby consulting office replete with 70s lava lamp and bowls of congealed chicken soup (good for the soul, apparently). Take the diary suggestion as a challenge, PR. Challenges are what keeps the world going – that and climate change action – but hey, the night is too young to dwell on rising temperatures and dying reefs. A barking dog calls and we, PR, must answer it. Now I’m a dog lover, so I’d just go and let the dog out of its yard and bring it into my office so we could assist each other through our days of solitary confinement, alternating between whines and whimpers
depending on the day’s events. But not everyone likes dogs. I understand that. So there’s an alternative. I suggest you write about what you see when you go out to investigate the barking dog. Is there a pothole in the road that has been there so long that it’s sprouting leaves? Is the council-maintained verge overgrown? What about the graffiti on the bus shelter that suggests you partake in unsavory acts with your mother? Write it all down, PR, and send the daily installments to your council, and maybe even to News Of The Area. I guarantee that dog will be supplied with a council-issued shock collar that’ll make it more placid than Randle “Mac” McMurphy after his lobotomy. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Milo in 2 Cricket Programs
By Rachael VAUGHAN
DAVID Warner and Steve Smith have been doing some incredible things on the cricket field during the summer so far. However, their success didn’t happen overnight. Chances are, both Dave and Steve started their cricketing journey thanks to Milo Cricket, and our very own Medowie Milo Cricket Team have started on this same journey. This season, 20 such lads have embarked on a path that could lead one of them all the way to a coveted ‘baggy green’. Led by their coach, 11-year-old William Cook, our Medowie Milo Cricket team recently completed their eight-week ‘Milo in2CRICKET’ program. The program is for both boys and girls from ages five to eight and designed to
introduce the game of cricket by teaching them the basic skills required to play the game. It is completely safe as the leather and willow are replaced by rubber and plastic, letting the children learn how to play cricket in a safe environment. Medowie Milo Cricket volunteer Lisa Cook is very proud of the team, telling News Of The Area, “They had a lot of fun learning cricket skills such as bowling, batting, learning how to catch and field a ball.” “They even had a couple of matches throughout the season in which they were very competitive. Hopefully we’ll find the next Steve Smith or David Warner amongst them.” Maybe they will. Now, wouldn’t that be something?
q Medowie Milo Cricket Team.
