THE recent death of a fourteen year old girl known as ‘Dolly’, who took her own life after years of bullying, has thrust the issue of bullying and mental health amongst young people once again into the spotlight, and in the spotlight is where it should remain. In 2016, suicide was the leading cause of death of children between five and seventeen, In Indigenous communities, the rates are also alarming, and not widely publicised. As a community, and as a nation, we must take action, Laura Francke, Principal Psychologist at Port Stephens Clinical Psychology Services, told News Of The Area, “Children who experience bullying experience significant disadvantages and poorer outcomes across a wide range of areas.” “While most children experience some form of low level teasing during their school years, when this is pervasive it impacts on academic and social wellbeing and in its more severe

MRS Galaxy Australia 2017 is preparing to hand over her crown after a wonderfully busy year of reign. Emilie-rae Hardes, wife and mother of two from Tanilba Bay, has been the Mrs Galaxy Australia for 2017 and participated in a wide variety of community and fundraising events. From countless charity events and fundraising endeavours through to Ambassador roles, VIP events and balls, Emilie-rae’s year has been run at full speed from start to finish. She told News Of The Area, “The highlight of this whole experience was being able to meet so many different people from all walks of life.” “The appearance that touched me the most was spending Mother’s Day at a local nursing home.” “Honorable mention must also go to my day getting back on a surfboard to compete in the ‘tubes for boobs’ competition,” she said. Emilie-rae is sad to see the end of her reign, but also excited for the next step in her life. She has good reason to be excited, telling News Of The Area that she is 25 weeks pregnant with her third child, a miracle baby to be born into her family. Questions of buses answered

A NEW school year has brought possible new problems for Medowie high school students travelling to Irrawang High School by bus. Against the backdrop of demands by local residents for a local high school for local students that has been going on for decades, this latest concern is no comfort to those who have already expressed their need for a Medowie-based high school. Recent questions have been asked, if there are sufficient buses available for Medowie students travelling to Irrawang. Member for Port Stephens,

Ms Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “The beginning of the school year has been a complete fiasco for these families and students.” Parents have stated that their children have had to wait an additional 40 minutes for a service bus to arrive to take them to school, others have had to wait for over an hour, and others still have been told they cannot be driven to their designated bus stop due to overcrowding. “Parents should have confidence that their children are being transported to school safely. We should never have a scenario where more than 30 kids can’t get on a school bus.” A spokesperson from

Hunter Valley Buses told News Of The Area, “There is adequate capacity on the buses currently servicing the Medowie-Raymond Terrace routes.” “In the mornings there are four buses travelling

the school route a few minutes apart with two more following at a later time.” “However, there have been some issues relating to students trying to crowd onto slightly earlier buses in the mornings and an earlier

school finishing time on Wednesdays.” “To relieve this situation in the morning a crowded bus has been stopped, and some students have been asked to transfer to one of the other buses.”

form can lead to serious mental health implications including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, school refusal and in some cases suicidality.” Whilst we often hear the comments ‘we didn’t see this coming’ when a young person takes their life, Laura explains there are some signs parents and caregivers can keep an eye out for. “Children generally either internalise or external use their inner turmoil.” “Internalising children may become withdrawn, anxious or sadder than usual and may experience somatic complaints such as stomach and headaches.” “Children who externalise may show increased aggression, problems regulating their behaviour or targeting of peers or siblings who are ‘weaker’ than them.” With this modern technological age, social media and the increase of young people having access to technological devices means that children who are experiencing bullying literally can often find no reprieve, with the online world giving bullies

“Remembering as parents our words create their inner voice, we need to instill confidence in our children and a directly teach them to be assertive to anyone treating them disrespectfully.” “Children do not have the developmental capacity to self regulate when using social media and as parents it is our responsibility to keep their world as safe as possible as they learn these skills,” Laura added. “Setting clear rules about device usage that maintains parental supervision is key to protecting children till they have the maturity to handle these situations.”

Lauren said, “In addition, the severity of bullying appears to have increased as children no longer need to face the response of their victim or accountability to their peers as they are in a private space with no immediate consequence to their actions.” There are some important things that parents can do to try and protect young people in these situations. “Children need to develop a capacity to manage bullying with strength and resilience, by teaching them to disengage immediately from anyone behaving aggressively to them - a crucial life skill,” says Laura.

You ‘like’ this message, but that seems dismissive, so you write a couple of sentences about the amazing schnitzels. You add an emoji, then another, and another. They respond with another message. You give them the ‘thumbs up’ emoji which means, the conversation is over. They give you a ‘thumbs up’ emoji and you realise you should send them a link about Internet protocol. You are about to log off, when you spot a video of a guy using a device called a Beard Bro, and even though you don’t have a beard or a bro, you decide to watch it. Now your tea is cold. Next your eyes swivel to an adorable video of a panda eating a carrot. You watch it twice. It’s very cute. You think about how much you’d like to own a panda. Knowing that is impossible, you think about how much you’d like to eat a carrot. You head to the fridge. Just above the carrots is half a Tiramisu. You take a spoonful. Then another. You take the whole packet out of the fridge and eat straight from the container (you can do that when you don’t have work colleagues). Returning to the Internet, you look up diets for people who eat Tiramisu when they should be eating carrots. Instead you come across a video of a man trying to teach his Labrador pup how to walk down stairs. You think about how much you’d like a Labrador. You feel bad about having these thoughts when your faithful cattle dog is at your feet. You take him for a walk. Mr JU, I think you should work in the library. Or disconnect your Internet. Or get a job as a teacher or a nurse or a paramedic. They don’t have time for this nonsense. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

This fun, local artisan officially Markets at the Rectory came about after Raymond Terrace Bowling Club purchased the Old Rectory at 48 Sturgeon Street, Raymond Terrace. Market organiser Adam Nicholas told News Of The Area, “The Markets were running down at the Riverside in Raymond Terrace, and now that we are at the Rectory we can start supporting charities” “Last year was our first year and we managed to raise about $1800.00 for the Riding For Disabled Raymond Terrace.” This year, the Markets at the Rectory committee have chosen charity the charity Saliability Port Stephens who are located on Medowie Road

on the side of Grahamstown Dam. The Markets are to support local little entrepreneurs in their endeavour to sell the products. Adam said, “A large percentage of the money raised from stall sites combined with the raffles also goes to the charity as well.” “The items raffled off are generously donated by the stall holders and placed into a washing basket which is donated from Woolworths Marketplace.” If other business would like to donate or support this event please get in contact with Adam whose details are below.” This year, Markets at the Rectory will be running every second month from 25 February 2018 from 10am till 2pm.

AFTER a recent meeting with Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) General Manager Andy Fairfull, Medowie will be playing in the premier Division again in 2018, honouring a MOU with Nelson Bay Gropers as a supporting team. TALENTED junior rugby players Chris Woodfield from Pindimar and Jordan Eade from The Branch are heading to Italy in April, having been selected for the NSW Country Rugby Union U16s Development Squad. They have been working hard through the holidays and fundraising to earn their tour expenses. The Karuah RSL have been a major sponsor for the boys, and are continuing their support by hosting a Fundraising Trivia Night on Saturday 17 of February at

6.30pm. Many businesses from the local area have generously donated prizes for the night, including a $400 Sports Camera from Marlin Marine and Tackle, and a $350 voucher for Altitude Travel. National Dance Champ By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE has a National Dance Champion, and she is only twelve years old. Kyara Darcy, who has been dancing with Medowie studio ‘Dance ‘n Dazzle’ since she was two years old, competed in January on the Gold Coast at the SHOWCASE National Dance Championships at the Star, Gold Coast. It was her first time competing at a National level and the first time a student from her studio has competed at this level also. Kyara had to qualify for Nationals back in August at the Regionals held at Lake Macquarie. She competed in five various tap dances styles and was awarded three placings. Kyara is now the National Fast Tap Champion, with a 1st Place in the Pre-Teen division. She also was awarded 2nd place in the Waltz Tap, and 3rd Place in the Slow Tap. The competition had

thousands of students competing from Australia and New Zealand and is the Most professionally run competition in Australia.

Kyara told News Of The Area, “It was really a surprise to find out I won such an amazing title, me a girl from Medowie winning an Australian title.” Kyara would one day like to become a famous choreographer, or perhaps one day dance on a cruise ship or become a dance teacher like her mother.

GRAHAMSTOWN ROAD TEMPORARY CLOSURE Due to construction work Grahamstown Road will be closed for approximately five weeks from Tuesday 20 February 2018. New pipelines are being constructed across Grahamstown Rd, which is built upon the dam wall. To maintain the impermeable seal of the dam wall, open excavation is required, and temporarily closing Grahamstown Rd is necessary.

The home venue for Medowie Little Athletics, Kindlebark Oval now has the infrastructure to host larger athletic competitions, as well

as allow those who support our own future champions to enjoy watching them from a newly built vantage point. Thanks to a jointly funded

project between the New South Wales Government and Medowie Sports Council, two sandstone block walls have been installed on what was

an unusable hill which will provide families with a large turfed area where they can watch their children in action. “The whole Kindlebark
