Hawaiian Blessing In Port Stephens By Heather SHARP

KEEPING safe on the seas is an important part of seafarers’ history and customs. For a geographical area comprising a chain of islands, water culture is at the forefront of everyday living. On 1 November, the Port Stephens Outrigger Canoe Club hosted Kumu Pa’a Kawika Foster to bless their new Tahitian Matahina outrigger.

Blowing the conch shell to announce the start of the ceremony, Kumu Pa’a Kawika Foster performed the ritual. Kawika Foster told News Of The Area he comes from a 51-generation unbroken lineage from the Hawaiian island of Molokai. From his base in Lemon Tree Passage he is a traditional practitioner of Hawaiian culture. As part of the ritual,

Kawika Foster also blessed the Paddlers and Hoe’s (paddles) who attended on the day. Ms Mandy Robinson from the Club told News Of The Area, “The blessing was very spiritual and emotional, as an Outrigger Club we honour and respect the traditions of outrigger canoeing throughout the Pacific.” “In Polynesian cultures

Robyn told News Of The Area, “When we found out about Annie’s illness this year, we were devastated, but after denial, tears and more tears, a few of us decided this would be our golden opportunity to do something positive for her.” “Knowing that Newcastle Relay For Life was coming up, and that the Cancer Council was her favourite charity, we then formed the team ‘Shake Your Teal Feather’ to participate in the event.” “Teal is the ovarian cancer ribbon colour, and Annie has been known to “shake it” out on the dance floor before with

a dance-a-thon to raise money for the underprivileged at her local church hal - She is a gem and a girl of many talents,” she said. Tanilba Public School put together a small but committed group of staff, and long time friends and clocked up over 100 kilometres of walking during the event, in

Brilliant Bus Shelters By Marian SAMPSON

MANY of the bus shelters on the Tomaree Peninsula are owned and maintained by the Lions Club of Soldiers Point. Recently the Lions Club of Soldiers Point commissioned local aerosol artist Rhys Fabris to turn some of their bus shelters into fixtures which create a sense of pride for the community. The bus shelter at Old Salamander Bay Shops now features a beautiful lorikeet and the one near Tomaree High School and the public swimming pool features a kookaburra created by artist Rhys Fabris. Sharon Blunt, President of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “The Club allocated funds to

improve the bus shelters, and these artworks are adding fun and colour to the community.” The Lions aim to improve more of their bus shelters, however this will depend upon funds raised at their various barbeques and through other fund raising activities. The Lions have also recently refurbished Bob Cairns Reserve at Salamander Bay. “The new look shelters offer a great way to show the local environment off to the community,” she said. Artist Rhys Fabris who collaborated on the Anna Bay place making artwork is having a busy year, his works now also adorns two Ingenia Caravan Parks at Soldiers Point and One Mile Beach, and there are plans for more bus shelters

Rhys Fabris told News Of The Area, “I am honoured and grateful to be able to work in my local community. “I’m stoked to do projects like this.” Rhys clearly has a talent to bring our local fauna and flora to life in artworks. “I’m looking forward to doing a Black Cockatoo,” he said. Rhys has identified several Port Stephens buildings which could become blank canvases for more artworks including a bus shelter at Pauls Corner. Illegal dumping it’s a crime

Council leading the fight against illegal dumping Port Stephens Council is leading the fight against illegal dumping, with an 80% reduction in most hotspots over the past 12 months — but the war isn’t over. This year, Council will be battling illegal dumping with funding from the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. Nick Jones, Waste Compliance and Strategy Coordinator, says an Illegal Dumping Clean-Up and Prevention Grant will enable Council to install even more measures to prevent illegal dumping. “This grant funding will allow us to continue our successful war against illegal dumping, focussing on new hotspots along roadsides. “We’ve had a positive result with our current approach with an 80% reduction in most hotspots, which is a great win for the Port Stephens community,” he said. This year, we’ll be targeting illegal dumping of household and garden waste at: • Ferodale • Tomago • Oyster Cove • Twelve Mile Creek “We will be cleaning up waste, installing signs, conducting surveillance and enforcing the law at these locations,” he said. “We’re also asking the community to get involved and report more illegal dumping incidents — sending the clear message that illegal dumping is not ok in Port Stephens. “With the community’s help, we’ve been able to track down more offenders, issue infringement notices of up to $8000, issue clean-up notices and even persecution in the local court,” he added.

This project is a EPA Waste Less, Recycle More Initiative, funded from the waste levy.

Special Ceremonies around the Port By Rachael VAUGHAN

THOSE in attendance at the Medowie Sub Branch RSL’s Remembrance Day Service were treated to some special inclusions to the day that spoke volumes of the special community of Medowie. John Gillam, an ex RAAF Warrant Officer, author, historian (and publisher, along with business partner Yvonne Fletcher) spoke to the crowd about the war and what it meant to our own local area. When we learn about wars and conflicts, it is often how Australia on a national

scale was affected. John moved the crowd to think of the efforts, sacrifices and loss made on a local level, to bring home the magnitude of what young men and women went through. He said “100 years ago when the guns fell silent these Men were being thought of here in Medowie.” John told the crowd of local lads, the James brothers, William, David and Rees. William Hopkins James, a farm labourer, became a war hero and rose through the ranks to eventually be a Colonel in the Light Horse. He returned to Medowie

and opened the first sawmill here. Rees James was badly wounded in January 1917, the bullet passing through his left shoulder and into his right lung. Their brother David James suffered terribly during the war from diseases such as Dysentery and Malaria. After discharge, David would return home and establish the Medowie Volunteer fire brigade. The crowd was visibly moved by the personalised accounts relating to Medowie, and it’s own young men who gave their all to

OPINION

Scant Reply Dorin’s Draws

media@newsofthearea.com.au

n the O Couch

By Paul DORIN

Dear News Of The Area,

RECENTLY I emailed some questions to Port Stephens Council in order to present a factual argument and perhaps a viable alternative to their proposed 66% Special Rate Variation (SRV). While the young lady I was dealing with provided answers to my questions, I believe she had been directed to structure them in a format intended to be scant and less than clear. Having suffered with dyslexia all my life, I found the answers very confusing. Even my wife is unable to interpret or identify any facts from the answers. As a result I went back to Council identifying my dyslexia and concerns and asked for the answers to be put into “Plain English”, which is one of the affirmations of the Councils “Customer Service Charter”. The response I received from the Mayor’s and General Manager’s Office has left me feeling belittled and somewhat of a lesser person. To quote their response, “The other questions you have raised have been dealt with in previous emails and I do not propose to go back over that ground”. Evidently, if you don’t understand something provided by our Council that is your fault for not being intelligent enough to understand what they consider, “Plain English”. It is not their business nor desire, it would seem, to ensure individuals understand the information or supporting evidence they provide. I find this attitude completely unacceptable. How many individuals are disadvantaged because they have a disability or don’t comprehend English that well? For example, if I ask, “How many companies quarrying sand and other minerals in the Local Government Area (LGA) are paying the Council money to maintain the haul roads they use, including which roads these are?” It shouldn’t be that hard to tell me. Rather, the actual response, which was: “Haulage fees: As previously outlined, these fees are collected for use on specific roads as determined by each Development Application consent. They can only be used for the maintenance and upkeep of roads detailed in the consents. Council cannot use these funds for other purposes, hence the amount shown in a reserve.” All I would like is to be provided with simple and clear answers so I’m confident that I understand the information provided. Simple and clear answers will reassure me that my rates and those of the greater Port Stephens community are being raised and spent in a way which ensures the absolute best value for our public money. Dear Jasminda,

$25.2M instigates Community opinion Dear News Of The Area, I AM not surprised that our Mayor, General Manager and Councillors are now proud to inform us that they have found a “hollow log” full of money to the tune of $25.2 million (News Of The Area, 8/11/18) Considering the 7.5% + CPI rate increases over 7 years (to remain indefinitely). Well, isn’t that a coincidence, especially

after having just voted for the 10% p.a. increases over 7 years in perpetuity, whether we can afford it or not. This $25.2 million is one quarter of what Council have wanted us to pay, i.e. $100 million. Council is ‘Fit for the Future’ with over $100 million of cash, airport, land and buildings assets. I would now suggest that our Council could be worth up to $150 million with all these assets.

The Hardship Policy is yet to be looked at by Councillors. This policy allows Council rates debts on private properties to accumulate with interest, and remain on that property until sold by family members. Nothing more to look at as this is how Council debts work. Brian Watson-Will, Corlette

Jet Skies causing waves

I work at a busy café and I can’t understand how rude some customers are. People try to change what’s on the menu, ask where their drinks are when I’m already balancing three plates and lots of other annoying things. Miss GK, Soldiers Point Dear Miss GK, I think the problem is a lack of training. You know when you get a job in hospitality, they put you through training modules so you are a competent employee? Well this should be a two-way street. Before being allowed to step foot in a restaurant, café or pub, you should have to pass Responsible Food and Beverage Behaviour training. I can see a Competent/Not Yet Competent checklist with general behaviour modules followed by more specific training in things like: Slips, Trips and Falls: Knowing when it’s time to call a taxi; Cash Handling: Learn how to tip, you tight moron; Process Reservations: Don’t move ‘Reserved Signs’, you selfish twit; Maintain the quality of perishable items: Leave your baby at home, and so on. Imagine all the money Registered Training Organisations would make running this new course for every member of the adult population. Our cafes would be full of well-behaved customers and hospitality would be seen as a desirable career pathway, not an opportunity to be harassed, abused and run off your feet by uncouth members of the public who should know better. Only people with a special ‘I’m polite’ card, sort of like an Opal Card would be allowed access, there could be a demerit system for lapses in behaviour and exemplary customers could be issued with a rewards card offering free beverages.. Solved! Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Dear News Of The Area, IN response to the letter from David Fitzgerald 8/11, the Wales only occur twice a year but our resident Dolphins are hear all the time. These magnificent animals attract numerous tourist dollars to our port. They have acute hearing as is evident in their mode of communication. We also have at colony of Sea Turtles to be considered . These high speed Jet Skies must wreak havoc on these marine animals and are quite likely to drive from our shores. I have not mentioned the danger to other waterways users and the total disregard for waterway rules and regulations that these users appear to have. If jet skies cannot be banned totally from Port Stephens then perhaps they they could be forced to operate west of Soldiers Point where they will not cause so much trouble, Claudia Wellings Fingal Bay

Nayte used his own initiative and collected rubbish around the local area and disposed of it properly on his way home from school. Abby Keeley from Medowie Public School for showing a respectful and responsible

attitude during band practices and performances. Abby has mentored new band members this year, and always sets and packs up band equipment. She does this both inside and outside the school setting without being asked. Lylah Martyn from Salt Ash Public School for always demonstrating what it means to be a nice friend to all of her peers. She displays these values

each and every day at school and in the community. Kanye Knox from Seaham Public School for being a fabulous help whilst stage 3 were on camp. Kanye took on the responsibility of all jobs while the students were away. Clair Dyson from Raymond Terrace Public School for demonstrating the PBL community values of acting responsibly and showing respect when performing at the Hunter River Showcase.

Tequarn Tickner from Karuah Public School, who was observed with outstanding manners in the community whilst attending the swim scheme program. He was holding the gates open, not only for his peers, but also for the general public as well. Sibella Rowen from Irrawang High School, who is actively and happily involved in numerous programs at school, including the ‘lead 2 recycle’ campaign and CAPA, consistently displaying our school expectations of respect.

Responsibility and personal best. Awards were also presented to people within the community who have played a part in the PBL program, including News Of The Area for supporting each week with an article published on the winners. We were honoured. Congratulations to the final group of PBL awardees for this year. Each student has been nominated for displaying the PBL values within our community.

Remembering For Peace Social Results GOLF

By Rachael VAUGHAN

SKETCHLEY Cottage, Raymond Terrace recently hosted the launch of new picture book, Remembering For Peace: The Adventures Of Emma And Ryan. Launched by Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson MP, the book shines a light on today’s impact of World War I on the land and on the people in France and Belgium. Authored by News Of The Area reporter, Heather Sharp, who also teaches at the University of Newcastle, it aims to teach children—and adults— that long after conflict ends, the impacts are still felt. The book is a wholly local production, the illustrator is from East Maitland and the publishers are Hunterbased business ‘Legends & Lessons’. Approximately 70 people came to the family-friendly event and were able to see the new Centenary of Armistice Exhibition curated by Mrs Pia Ryeland of the Sketchley Cottage Museum. The Area, “I hope children and adults enjoy the book.” “I wanted to write a book that was able to make historical facts, which can sometimes be seen as boring, interesting through a story of two children who travel with their parents.” “The two children discover how World War I is still in the lives of French and Belgian people, even 100 years after the end of the conflict.”

“Laura Arnull, the book’s illustrator, has created beautiful illustrations to make the words come alive.” “They complement the story perfectly.” In the week after the book launch, the Australian War Memorial confirmed an order to sell the books in their gift shop. Teachers are also well catered for with this

book’s release and Stage 3 class-ready resources are provided for free on placement of an order. Developed by the University of Newcastle, the curriculum resources are cross-curricular and linked to the Syllabus. White Ribbon Walk Art for Mental Health

By Marian SAMPSON

ALMOST 100 people gathered at Birubi Beach at 7 am Thursday morning to kick off the Port Stephens Toyota Pro surf competition and to participate in a White Ribbon Awareness Walk and Beach Clean Up. This is a new addition to the event where participants were enthusiastic about being on the beach at such an early hour. The Group Walked a little over a kilometre of beautiful Birubi Beach in the early morning light. White Ribbon Ambassador, Roger Yeo, addressed the group bringing the message home clearly that now is the time for change. Roger reminded them that 59 women have been killed in Australia this year, most of them by men they knew. There have been 11 women killed in the past month alone! Fifty nine white ribbon markers were placed at Birubi as a reminder to all of all that has been lost. Roger Yeo told News Of The Area, “The walkers managed to gathered three bins full of rubbish during their walk that was counted and categorized into recyclables, soft plastics and land fill by Lia and Dave from Sea Shelter.”

After the Walk several of the participants also took advantage of the moment to go for a quick surf with professionals practicing for the competition and were rewarded with surf hats and professional white leg ropes from another sponsor, Ocean & Earth. The competition runs from Thursday 8th through Tuesday 13th and features

YOU are invited to an art show with a difference, aimed at raising funds to make a difference in the lives of some important young people in Port Stephens. This Art Show is unlike any other we have had in Port Stephens and will be a major fundraiser for a new youth counselling service that will be launched in February 2019. Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) Inc., in conjunction with Salamander Bay Rotary, invites you to an Event at Chez Basser, 2/213 Soldiers Point Road, Salamander Bay. This Event will feature wonderful works of art by distinguished local, Newcastle and Sydney artists. Your $10 will cover entry into this special event and light refreshments - tickets are available at the door. COPSY’s first major milestone was the completion of the needs’ analysis report in December 2016, which was funded by the local Primary Health Network and the Port Stephens Council. The report was discussed in public meetings and smaller steering group meetings. These led to making the establishment of a local service a priority.

ur resident Property Expert, is here to offer advice. Denise will be responding to questions from News Of The Area readers, throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your questions to Denise, care of media@ newsofthearea.com.au and include your, name and suburb. Dear Denise,

What’s with the new Price Range on Properties For Sale? I’VE had a lot of buyers confused over this new pricing technique of late, not being sure what price they are meant to offer, or how to go about it. This new system replaces the old “offers over” pricing. You will find agents are using the price range lately and this is due to “Offers Over” not being allowed to be used anymore. The pricing range must not have more than a 10% difference ie $300,000 - $330,000. Agents are indicating to the buyer that their seller is seeking a price within this range. Once you have inspected the property, and you decide you would like to buy it, you are invited to make an offer using the 10% range as a guide. To give yourself the best chance of securing the property, of course it is always going to be the best idea to offer at the higher end of the guide, but only if you see value there and you can afford it. As usual it is entirely up to the seller whether they accept your offer or whether they decide to wait to see if they can secure a higher one. Good Luck! Hope that helps. Denise.
