Activities included a kitchen fire demo, ‘Mighty mike’ fire truck simulation truck for kids, a hose target game, house fire smoke simulator tent, quad bikes, fire truck tours and safety and awareness talks. Families were also treated to a BBQ, cool drinks and cupcakes. CONTINUED Page 2

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au FROM Page 1 and 2pm, the Club’s equipment shed on Kindlebark Oval in Medowie was broken into, and two pieces of machinery were stolen. A red ride on mower, and a green John Deer Gator that the club uses to transport heavy equipment on and off the field were both stolen, along with their batteries chargers. The Gator has the Medowie Little Athletics sticker/logo on it, but they may have been taken off by now. These pieces of machinery were purchased by the club, after extensive fundraising to raise money for them, so they are understandably quite upset about this violation. Please keep your eyes peeled for anyone around you who suddenly has two new, and very expensive, toys. If you have any information on these pieces of machinery, and their removal from the club facilities, please contact Raymond Terrace Police Station.

Cooking up a storm to spoil Dad By Rachael VAUGHAN

WIRREANDA Fathers were treated to a special breakfast last week at the school. With a theme of ‘wear your favourite football colours’, the school hall was a sea of colour with lots of kids treating their Dads to a feast. The event was a wonderful success, and well exceeded the numbers from the last time the breakfast was held at the school two years ago. Teacher Corynne Darcy told News Of The Area, “It was wonderful to see so many Dads that we don’t always get to see due to work commitments, come into the school and celebrate with their children.” “It was a very special

2016 Longriders Bike Show By Rachael VAUGHAN

WITH the weather turning on them, and the skies pouring with rain from 6am, the organisers of the Longriders Bike Show were sceptical that the day would come together.

Their prayers were answered though, and by 9am strong winds roared through Tomago and blew the rain away. A large variety of amazing motorbikes started rolling in, the gates opened, the crowd turned up and it was a full

and there was quite literally something for everyone. Dr Peter Rallings from Health in Abundance Medowie joined the crowd at the show and kindly donated his time all day offering free health checks. The CMC (Christian

causes. Soldier on and Charlie’s Run 4 kids were the charities for this year’s bike show, and were undoubtedly grateful for such a wonderful event to be bestowed upon them charitably. Congratulations to the Longriders Motorcycle club for such a successful and inclusive community event.

Brickfest set to impress By Rachael VAUGHAN AN event is coming to Medowie that is sure to impress Lego fans of all ages. Wirreanda Public School P&C and Williamtown Rotary club have joined forces to host ‘Rainbow Bricks’ to present ‘Medowie Brickfest’ on Sunday 25 September. Medowie Brickfest will be a Lego fan event, and is set to be a fun-filled event. President of Wirreanda P&C, Leisl Kennedy, told News Of The Area, “We encourage families to buy their tickets early and come along for a fun day.”

“There will be lots to see and do, and we’ll be raising funds for much needed resources in our school and community,” she said. At the event, there will be over twenty-five exhibitors, lots of Lego displays and sets, speed build competitions and a Lego play area. The Wirreanda Public School P&C will also be holding a sausage sizzle, raffle and cake stall on the day. Funds raised from the day will go towards several rotary charities including ‘Sailability’ at Grahamstown Dam and also to the Wirreanda Public School library upgrade.

June Fuller Awarded Lifetime Membership By Rachael VAUGHAN

THIS week, News Of The Area would like to put a spotlight on another generous community volunteer. June Fuller has been and still is a highly valued member of Medowie CWA (Country Women’s Association) branch. She was recently presented with the prestigious award of CWA Lifetime Membership. June was a founding member of the branch, and since its inception she has worked tirelessly as an advocate for CWA of NSW at all levels and also within the wider community. June has held most positions within the branch, including that of councillor to group council meetings, group vice president, delegate to group and state AGM’s.

She has seldom missed a branch meeting in all her years of membership, and has been totally involved in contributing to branch functions and fundraising activities. She supports new members, visits other CWA branches, and is always available for advice and fellowship. June is an exemplary member of CWA. She typifies what the CWA has come to mean to the public, and her branch, displaying those characteristics that a ‘country woman’ is believed to possess, involved in both her family, business, and community and all the time being practical in support and action. June supports many causes, including; Sewing for branch stalls, the JHH neonatal clinic, Ronald McDonald house, baby nighties for ACWW and other overseas projects, and days for girls sustainable sanitary kits.

Cuppa for a Cause SPORTZ Café has shown their true community spirit this week in a generous gesture to our Rural Fire Brigade. The relatively new café, located in the twentyfour-hour gym complex on Ferodale Road, has made a wonderful first impression on locals, with their friendly personalities, excellent food and drink, and relaxed atmosphere. Owners Carol and Chris Saunders read about the Fire Station Open day organised for last weekend, and decided they wanted to contribute. They decided to donate $1 to the brigade from every cup of coffee sold on Saturday, and set about advertising on social media extensively to make sure everyone came

She has been a show committee member for almost every year since Hunter River Group took over running the Newcastle Show CWA tea rooms. One of June’s great

strengths is that she not only herself contributes to requests from head office and other community causes, she actively enlists from others, drawing from her wide network of friends and

Hazard trees

THE Department of Defence has received approval from Port Stephens Council to remove a number of older trees around Williamtown airport, which have been identified as hazardous to commercial and military aircraft, once the newly extended runway comes into service. The removal will be offset by planting 370 new trees in the local area, expanding the Williamtown koala habitat. Removal of the older trees will provide a safe take-off and landing path for military and civilian aircraft. The removal of the trees will also ensure there are no obstructions to radar signals and the continued visibility of landing lights for pilots. While removal of the older trees commenced on Thursday, 8 September, planting of the new, 370-

Carol Saunders told News Of The Area, “Quite a few people threw in extra donations, and their spare change into the Fire Brigade collection jar, it was lovely to see the community spirit in fine form.” Carol and Chris, and their friendly team of local staff members, raised a nice donation for the Brigade, and said the support by locals of their efforts has made them think they’ll do something like this again for another local cause. Some temporary lane closures adjacent to Nelson Bay Road and Medowie Road may be needed over a twoweek period commencing 8 September. Defence will work with Roads and Maritime Services, and Port Stephens Council to minimise the impact on traffic and ensure public safety while this important work is carried out. The Department of Defence appreciates the support it receives from the Port Stephens and surrounding communities during the Base Upgrade period. Wellbeing Program Go Ahead By Simone JOHNSON THE community is being asked to step outside the ‘Red Zone’. Funds for the much anticipated well-being program have been allocated and approved to begin programs this October. Members of the community have been working on setting up a wellbeing program since February 2016 for all the families

affected by the Williamtown contamination saga. The University of Newcastle’s Family Action Centre has been hired to be the facilitator of the programs funds. Philippa Talbot, from the Family Action Centre said, “As an employee of The Family Action Centre, it is wonderful to be part of such a worthwhile community project working with residents to support and help facilitate wellbeing

and connectedness through a series of activities that encourage stress reduction and build resilience.” The University have agreed to allow the community to hold a morning Movement Relaxation class each week with an attached Crèche. This will run from the 21 October, for 8 consecutive weeks. It will be held every Friday morning in the Church Hall

next to the Port Stephens Church of Christ. A Thursday evening class has also been approved but will not have a crèche attached. This will be located at the Yoga Hut, 537 Lemon Tree Passage Road. Julie Hawkins will be the instructor for both classes. Julie, lead community coordinator for the program told News of The Area, “This is only the first of the programs,

YOUR Voice after the recent Police Meet

Public Opinion on Ice Report Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

REGARDING the story in edition 8 September 2016 (Medowie News Of The Area) ‘Ice Report welcomed by MPs’. Here is one of the many reasons behind my intention to run in the next council election. I have no ties and no time for any of these people, the rules are the rules and everyone has to be held responsible for following them.

REGARDING the story in edition 8 September 2016 (Medowie News Of The Area) ‘Ice Report welcomed by MPs’. A holier-than-thou attitude from another lady in a big red frock – Eddie and Joe preceded all this and gaol terms have been suggested for those guys. Paul (comment through NewsOfTheArea.com.au)

Dear News Of The Area, REGARDING the story in Medowie News Of The Area (8 September 2016) ‘Community Want greater Police Presence’. I moved here from Liverpool (Sydney) mid last year, trust me this beautiful town does not have a visible crime problem. That is apart from the graffiti by the kids in their skate park. Philip G Isepy, Medowie Dear News Of The Area, I ATTENDED the forum and the major concern for residents was anti social behaviour particularly

when it comes to a certain demographic and the way they drive their motor vehicles. All of the attendees were concerned that this behaviour was a very real risk to the community and whilst it may not be the same as a home invasion etc the end result could be injury and or death to innocent people. The attending police were very responsive to our concerns however they were very firm in their opinion that all incidents be reported and all details of the police officer (that you report it to) should be noted. They also said if you call and report an incident and get no response you should call back and elevate your concerns to the supervising

officer. The commander advised that you keep elevating your concerns until you get an appropriate response. Chris Saunders, Medowie

Students complete dance exams By Rachael VAUGHAN

IT is examination time again for a large group of Medowie dancers. Thirty-eight talented students from Dance N Dazzle complete their ATOD (Australian Teachers of Dancing) Classical Ballet, National Character and Jazz exams on Sunday 28 August. The ATOD syllabus is renowned around Australia and Asia Dance N Dazzle offer examinations every year in four genres of dance, Tap, Jazz, Classical Ballet and National Character.

The examiner came from Sydney to examine the pupils, and whilst they won’t have results back until October, it is believed that all pupils passed. The pupils were examined in three groups of Classical Ballet exams – Test 2, Bronze Medal and Silver Star. They were examined in four groups of Jazz Exams – Test 3, Bronze Star Group A, Bronze start group B and Gold Star. The school also presented their first ever group of National character – where dances of other cultures are studied.

DANCE

The youngest student to be examined was five years old, and the eldest was sixteen. These students have been working all year on their grade work. Each of the exams improves the students’ technique, ability and overall confidence as well as working towards accreditation for these students. Students are now working towards competing at Abermain Eisteddfod, near Cessnock which is celebrating its 99th year of running in the school holidays and also their end of year concert.

The Club is also fielding their first under 13’s all girls team this year. Registration days and times are; Wednesday 14 September 5pm to 6:30pm and Sunday 18 September 12noon until 2pm at Ferodale Oval, Medowie. For any further information, please call Jordan Rimmington on 0411537279 or obtain a rego form online at www. medowie.nsw.cricket.com.au

Junior Cricket Club members ready for the 2016 summer season.

Touch footy comp open for registrations By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Port Hunter Marauders are open for registration for the 2016 season. The rego days will take place on 22 September and 29 September at Boyd Oval at 5pm both days. They offer teams for Mixed (all ages), B grade and Juniors from five years old. Their A Grade team is online only, and you can speak to the club if interested. Social team registrations are welcome, but so are single players who need a team to be assigned to. Teams come each year to the comp from not only Medowie, but also Wallsend, Maitland, and Newcastle. The comp starts on the 6 October, with the first week being a trial.

Games are held at Boyd Oval on Thursday nights at 5:30pm onwards. There is no training, just social games. The comp finishes on the 2nd March 2017. The club will also be fielding three representative sides for the State Cup in Port Macquarie in December - You can nominate for one of these teams, or be selected from games. Fees are $500 a team or $600 if you don’t supply a referee from your team for rotation. Juniors pay a fee of $20 per player. All grades except A Grade are refereed by a rotating roster from all teams - A Grade is refereed by association accredited referees. The touch comp has been

lucky enough to have our local community-minded real estate, Century 21, come on as their major sponsor. They are joined by SJ’s Hotel in Hamilton, MCA Engineering, Plus fitness 24/7 Medowie, A Redman power and Ben Nyland Engineering. The Club is still looking for more sponsors for the 2016-2017 Summer touch competition. A brand new committee has just been elected after three years of Dan Szarkun effectively running it on his own, but the club still need volunteers for line marking, canteen and juniors. For more information, you can contact Matt Jeffery on 0421032956 or Bryan Thompson on 0409452887.

Soccer Selected Nine-year-old Alyssa will be playing on the Newcastle soccer development squad program in the U/10’s for the 2017 season.

MEDOWIE Soccer player Alyssa Hogan was excited to learn last week that she has been successful in being selected for the Newcastle Football (soccer) Elite Player Program. Nine-year-old Alyssa will be playing on the Newcastle soccer development squad program in the U/10’s for the 2017 season. Alyssa’s mother, Kristy Hogan, told News Of The Area, “We are very proud of Alyssa with her soccer talents

and how far she has come.” “Bring on the 2017 season!” she said. Players were selected by showing an above average football ability, and a willingness to play and train with like minded girls and improve their skills even further through training and competition. It is a serious football program with high expectations in regards to players attitudes and approach to the game Alyssa will be expected to attend training two nights

a week in Newcastle, and the intended program for 2017 will have high expectations for football improvement over the course of the season. Alyssa’s team will play against boys teams, as well as other representative girls teams.. News Of The Area look forward to following Alyssa’s progress with her new representative team, and wish her the best of luck this season.
