TODAY saw a momentous occasion as the Open Day for Williamtown Preschool and Williamtown Child Care Centre took place. The centre, originally situated on Williamtown RAAF base, made the decision last year to move their centre, due to an imminent noise increase at the RAAF base. There were concerns about the effects of the impressive new jets, F-35 joint strike fighters, on small ears, so the decision was made to relocate to a new site in Raymond Terrace from 2017. Many parents and caregivers of children attending the centres were initially concerned the centre would close permanently when the Williamtown site announced their need to close. The Open Day was therefore an especially significant day, with excited CONTINUED Page 2

Williamtown Child Care Centre is run by Mission Australia, catering for children birth to six years, with Dianne Sanger as the Director. She renewed her call for urgent action for the community that had “been through the wringer”, with high levels of chemicals in their blood and properties devalued at least 15%. “I made sure the taskforce knows exactly what it is like for our community here in Williamtown, who are angry and frustrated at having to wait so long for answers, and fearful for their health and their families and their future,” Ms Swanson said. “I was assured by his senior advisors that the Prime Minister sees this as a priority and that the taskforce has been asked to report back to the government as quickly as possible.” Ms Swanson asked for a briefing from the taskforce when she learned that the issue of PFAS contamination had been taken into the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on 29 November.
While there were no timetables given for action, Ms Swanson said the taskforce had been asked to report back to the Prime Minister as a matter of urgency. “They have been asked to come back to the government with a report on how the announced measures are progressing, and to give consideration to options that will help communities,” Ms Swanson said. “They impressed on me they had to balance the speed of their response with knowledge of the science and evidence around PFAS contamination. “I impressed upon them how our community had been through the wringer and was sick and tired of waiting.” Through the taskforce, Ms Swanson invited the Prime Minister to come to Williamtown to hear people’s stories and offer them solutions. “I know how much it meant to everyone when Bill Shorten came, so I have suggested Malcolm Turnbull do the same.”
Beauty Queen cleans up By Rachael VAUGHAN
ALL good Queens use their powers for good, and not evil. Pageant Queen hopeful Emilie Hardes is certainly doing just that in her bid to become the 2017 Mrs Galaxy Australia in the National final, of which she is currently a finalist. Emilie is a married mother of two from Tanilba Bay, who is loving her pageant journey so far. Emilie told News Of The Area, “I’ve put myself on the back burner since having my little girls, and this journey has helped me to achieve so much self confidence.” “Being in this role has made me consciously take better care of myself, and find more balance for both myself and my little family.” “I’ve flourished on this journey, I’m getting my old self back and I’m loving every bit of getting out into our community and finding new things to support and be a part of on this adventure,” she
said. The final of the pageant will be held in Surfers Paradise in late March of this year. The competition will include sections for swimwear, fashion wear and evening gown as well as an interview. If Emilie is successful, the winner from each section is sent to America to compete on an international level. For the year following crowning, winners are expected to remain active within their community, and also attend events and appearances. In the meantime, Emilie is keeping busy participating in, and organising, lots of events in the community. Emilie visits local nursing homes, organises charity raffles and fundraisers and volunteers at local events. Coming up on 5 March, Emilie is hosting a clean up Australia event in Tanilba Bay and would love some local support.

Putting Something Back
Living up the memory of spouse’s goodness and compassion through fundraising activities for the benefit of Cancer Council. By Geoff WALKER
q Gone but never forgotten: Kate with a portrait of Garry which takes pride of place on the counter at The Oyster Shack.
WELL known local businessman Garry Slater passed away some two years ago after a battle with cancer. He was 64. Since then his wife Kate has wanted to ‘put something back’ as she was greatly moved by the care he was given at Newcastle Private Hospital. All moneys collected will be forwarded to the Cancer
Council. Currently she is selling books and raffle tickets at ‘The Oyster Shack’. Patrons, waiting for their takeaway meals, can actually see the progress of the fundraiser on a cardboard ‘thermometer’ which runs up the wall. The monster raffle has some 40 prizes in total, the major one being a ‘getaway’ weekend at Terrigal Crowne Plaza.

The Block hits Irrawang High
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE renovation show with a cult-like following, The Block, has inspired Irrawang High School students in a wonderful initiative aimed at beautifying their school grounds. In the ‘student suggested and run’ initiative, selected areas at Irrawang High school are in for exciting cosmetic makeovers. The competition will be high as students from each school ‘House’ ( Dawson, Moy, Osborne and Bramley) aim to beautify the school and make it a nicer place to be. During the term, plans will be developed and designs finalised with final proposals to be presented to the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) team in week nine. During the Easter holidays, students, teachers and volunteers will donate their valuable holiday time to a two to three day working bee to implement
the students designs and renovate their chosen space at the school. School Captain Annabel Bisley and Vice Captain Dylan Hopper launched THE BLOCK project this week at assembly, to a very excited hall of future Blockheads. Irrawang High School representative, Luella Fagan,
told News Of The Area, “Our school family is so proud of these students for their idea, and all the planning they have put in place.” “It will be a wonderful project for the students to be involved in, and we look forward to seeing the results.” “it is so heartwarming to see the students so excited

MERGER OFF TABLE
Port Stephens Deputy Mayor, Mr Chris Doohan, hangs up his boxing gloves By Rachael VAUGHAN PORT Stephens residents can breathe a sigh of relief with news just in that the proposed Port Stephens Council merger is officially off the table. A hard battle has been fought by the people of Port Stephens, who have been active and vocal from the first announcement by the Baird Government that a merger with Newcastle Council would take place. Twenty Sydney councils did not escape their proposed mergers, with five more set to be decided on by the courts, but the Berejiklian Government has relented on regional parts of the State and abandoned their proposed amalgamations. Premier Berejiklian has followed through on her promise of “I will fix this”, when she chaired her first cabinet meeting as Premier, and signalled that she would reconsider the policy. Port Stephens Deputy Mayor, Mr Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area “A heartfelt thank you to the people of Port Stephens that stood up and helped convince the Government that this was a bad decision.” “Port Stephens residents should now take the chance to pop a cork or cheers a beer with each other and congratulate themselves on a very well battled victory.” “It is twelve months to the

Ms Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson, told News Of The Area “I’m glad the voice of our community has been listened to and these mergers are finally off the table.” Shadow Minister for the Hunter and Port Stephens MP, Ms Kate Washington, has welcomed the announcement that Hunter Councils will not be forced to merge. “I thank the many residents who have committed time and energy to fighting the proposed forced mergers in the Hunter.”
“It’s just so disappointing that the NSW government has held a gun to our community’s head for so long, and all for nothing.” “The Hunter Councils have endured over 12 months of uncertainty which has delayed major projects, cancelled elections and seen long serving staff leave the organisations.” she said. Dear Jasminda,
There is friction at work and our boss has suggested we gather once a week for yoga sessions to improve team bonding and reduce stress. What do you think? Mr JG, Williamtown Dear JG, I must say it is nice to get some male mail. Now, onto the question. If we rephrase what your boss actually wants, it will become clearer. It is all in the wording, particularly the fine print. Gather once a week for yoga? What your boss is actually suggesting is that you spend an extra hour of your own precious time with the people you are desperately trying to escape from. That doesn’t sound like stress relief, more like community service. And yoga? I mean do you really want to see Sally from marketing trying to master the downward dog? It’s bad enough spending time with your work colleagues when they’re in a shirt and tie. Imagine Bradley lying prostrate in his tracky-dacks. Or Jed from IT curled up in the corner, nicotine starved and miserable, because by 5.30pm he’s normally downed three Coopers and chain-smoked his cares away at the Bull n Bush. It is not your fault your boss has hired 15 incompatible personalities. Leave at the normal time and take up boxing. It’ll feel so much better pretending the blocking pad is Henry the sales manager than trying to unblock your chakras to whale music. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Couple Celebrate Ageless Love
Serendipity of love springs in autumn years and bloom! By Heather SHARP
ENERGETIC and effervescent President of the Rotary Club of Williamtown, Mr Geoffrey Hamilton, has an extra special reason to be happy. In addition to overseeing a successful Medowie Christmas Carols in December, on Saturday, 4 February he married his fiancé, Ms Diana Harben. Proving you are never too old for love, Mr Hamilton is 76 years old and met his fiancé only a couple of years ago. Both are keenly involved with volunteer groups and have been for decades, including Probus, Rotary, and Delta Dogs. The wedding, held at Stanley Park Fullerton Cove, was attended by family and close friends of the couple. The story of how the couple met is just magical. On a multi-club Probus organised four-day retreat to Gloucester, Mr Hamilton as President of his local branch, was organising everyone and everything including the luggage. Last on the coach, there was only one spare seat,
and it was next to Ms Diana Harben. Here, they sparked a friendship, talking nonstop all the way to their destination, and the rest, as they say, is history. Mr Hamilton told News Of The Area, “There sitting by herself was Diana so I asked did she mind if I sat with her.” “Well we talked non-stop and by the end of the trip

Wirreanda Presents New Leaders By Heather SHARP
WIRREANDA Public School is proud to present its new school leaders for 2017. In a busy start to the school year, with the swimming carnival already held, and the arrival of a new classroom, Wirreanda Public School has started at full speed. An early school year priority for many schools is the induction of its school leaders. At an assembly on Monday, 6 February, the school leadership team was presented to the school population. When asked what being a leader meant, Will Phillips, one of the Captains told Medowie News Of The Area, “Being school leader means I will meet new people and take on new responsibilities.” “I look forward to representing the school
and preparing myself more for High School through leadership.” Captain Andie Archer said, “Participating in new events and working with peers and assisting younger students in the school” was something to look forward to in 2017. School leadership in primary school, whether or not in an official position, can be a stepping stone to building skills and taking on responsibilities with confidence well into the teenage years. MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY News Of The Area
University Opens Futures By Heather SHARP
THE decision to become a tertiary student can be both career and life changing. Many Medowie residents have taken the next step in their education by enrolling in a university degree and, with Semester One starting at the end of February, preparations are under way for the 2017 academic year. Data released by the Department of Education and Training shows that over 1.4million students were enrolled in university study in 2015 and that number is rising yearly.
While the majority of university students are still school leavers, mature age students are an increasing percentage of the student population. For Medowie local, Ms Eve Pratten, the decision to enrol in a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle was career based. Ms Pratten, who is enrolling as a mature-aged student, told Medowie News Of The Area, “I am currently an Assistant in Nursing (AIN), but wanted to go further with my career and this seemed like a good start.” Supporting Ms Pratten on
her studying journey is her best friend of 21 years. “My friend is doing the degree with me, so that is definitely great motivation and support,” Ms Pratten said. The two women have prepared for study by completing the University of Newcastle’s Open Foundation tertiary preparation program and were subsequently accepted into the Bachelor degree. Ms Pratten is aware of the challenges that will come with study, having previously been enrolled in a Business degree, adding, “My biggest challenge will be trying to juggle work,

university, and raising my daughter.” “It’s hard to get a work/ study/life balance at the best of times, but now I am doing uni full time, I think I get three days off a fortnight when I am not working or going to classes.” There are a range of support structures available to students, including student clubs, the student union, free academic support from the Centre for Teaching and Learning, free Library sessions, and free Counselling to name a few. Students do not have to feel as though they are alone in this exciting, but challenging, experience of university study.
THE Thermal Heat Index reading at Alan Gibson’s Tanilba Bay weather station broke all records on Saturday 11 February. The THI is the combined measurement of temperature and humidity. In short, it is the heat the body experiences when the two factors combine. At 1.30pm it peaked at 56.1C. The highest reading on the thermometer was at 2.33pm when the mercury crested at 40.8C. Alan explained why this extreme reading was possible, “Recent flooding events in the centre of the outback have seen a huge amount of evaporation during the hot weather which followed. This in turn has worked its way to the east coast as a very hot and moist weather event.” “On top of this the sea current off Port Stephens is running at around 28 degrees Celsius. The prevailing North Easterly breeze also brings this hot moisture laden air onshore.” Meanwhile, Tilligerry locals were well placed to
cool off during the heat wave. Drew MacIntosh took his children Mila and Jordy for a dip in the new Lemon Tree Passage tidal pool where the water temperature was in the low 20s. The family duo of grandmother and granddaughter Sharon and
Ariana sought relief at the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre. The $80,000 water feature proved to be popular with its cool misted sprays and arching water jets. As a ‘one off,’ Port Stephens Council extended the weekend hours at its three pools to 8pm after
weather forecasts predicted the extreme heat wave conditions. The RFS activated its automatic recorded phone warning system when Sunday’s bushfire risk rating was classified as ‘catastrophic’.

The Squashies are back By Rachael VAUGHAN
LONG-TIME residents of Medowie will take a step back in time when walking through the doors of the Medowie Sports Centre this week. The renovated and modernised Squash Courts were officially opened, after being closed for close to
twenty years. The original structures of the old courts were kept, with the modern inclusion of high quality glass back walls and a viewing deck above both the courts from the second level of the sport centre. The original hardwood floors were saved, stripped back, sanded and finished,
giving a sentimental aspect to the new-look courts. The club until now, has been playing at Raymond Terrace and Cardiff, but will now have alternate week home games at the Medowie Sports Centre courts on a Thursday night. The Medowie Squash Club plays in the Newcastle Squash

Association competition. A junior competition and coaching will be organised, with Aaron Fyfe on board as Coach, Aaron is an under 17s National Juniors Champion, and was part of the 2008 Australian Junior team for the World Men’s Championships. Aaron told News Of The Area, “Squash is a fantastic sport to get the kids involved in, getting them fit and active whilst having a whole lot of fun.” “Our classes and comp will be centred around making sport, and the game of squash, fun.” Times and days for junior squash will be booked according to demand. Steve Bentley, manager of Medowie Sports Centre, told News Of The Area, “This is the start of a big adventure for us here, and the first of many new openings to come before the new Medowie Sports Centre is finished.” “These courts are for the community.” We want to see people meeting up for a game, maybe a bite to eat afterwards,

gymnastics uneven bars, 3 and 6 metre air track mats, an air cylinder, air launch pad, 3 metre elite gymnastics beam, a cart wheel training mat, balance beam trainer mat, on floor balance beam, four tumbling mats and a mini trampoline has enabled the studio to also increase their class selection.
Tracie Tickle, owner, director and teacher at Ultimate Dance told News Of The Area: “We introduced the new equipment for the students to be able to train for fun and enjoyment, to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, or just to increase skills and confidence.” “The classes are open to
anyone, whether that be for one day a week to entertain their child or if they are looking for a sport to pursue locally,” she said. Tracie has just returned from Queensland, becoming internationally recognised to teach all 12 levels of the Acrobatics Arts syllabus. This achievement is widely regarded, making
