THERE are seven candidates for Patterson listed on the Australian Electoral Commission site.
By Simone JOHNSON
●● BURSTON, Graham Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. ●● CLARE, Brian - Rise Up Australia Party. ●● BROWN, John - The Greens. ●● SWANSON, Meryl Labor ●● DAVIS, Peter - Citizens Electoral Council. ●● HOWARD, Karen Liberal. ●● ARENA, Peter - Christian Democratic Party (Fred Nile Group).
The seat of Patterson has had its boundaries redistributed to be only one sixth of its original area. The boundary is now 1,123 square km’s in size. It includes Port Stephens, Lochinvar, Raymond Terrace, East Maitland, most of Maitland and Kurri Kurri. This re-distribution has seen the original 9.8% liberal favouring margin change to a 0.4% labour favouring margin. CONTINUED Page 3

...Marriage Act to include same-sex couples, this is a hot topic not only in Medowie but across Australia. One Medowie local and mother, Rachael Vaughan, welcomes diversity and encourages more people to embrace their child’s uniqueness. Ms Vaughan has recently launched a new clothing range, equali-tees. Its purpose is to bust myths about gender stereotypes such as boys are rough and tough and girls only like princesses. Ms Vaughan told Medowie News Of The Area, “I wanted this range to reflect each child’s personality, not necessarily just their gender.” ”I want to fill a gap that is missing in the market and have each child to be able to order something that is uniquely something they love.” “It can be really difficult to find clothes and toys for kids who like stuff that doesn’t fit their gender stereotype.”

I WANT to run for Paterson because I want to be a champion for our community, fighting to ensure that our region receives its fair share of help from Government, something which hasn’t happened for a long time. Our region needs increased funding for hospitals and local schools, new investment in infrastructure projects to create jobs, and a proper NBN that will fix our broken internet service. I was born in Kurri Kurri hospital, and grew up in Heddon Greta. I now live in Buchanan with my husband and two kids. I have spent my working life talking about how great our region is - most recently, through working with 2HD and 2NUR radio stations. I strongly believe that policies need to take a people-

first approach, and this is reflected in Labor’s policy on the Williamtown RAAF contamination issue, which includes voluntary blood testing and a national response to this issue; a policy I heavily advocated for. Having our hospitals and schools properly funded means people can get the health care they need and our children can get a decent education. The full and proper National Broadband Network will bring jobs to our region in a way which the other side of politics doesn’t seem to fully comprehend, and I will fight for suburbs such as Medowie, which isn’t on the Liberals’ rollout plan, to include in a future quality NBN. Above all, I will listen, and I will be a strong voice for Paterson. I ask you for your vote on 2 July.

Seat of Paterson brings on seven FROM Page 1 Bob Baldwin, the retiring Liberal MP was first elected in 1996, defeated in 1998, and re-elected in 2001. The election will mean a new face of Paterson, as Mr Baldwin has been the MP for seventeen of the last twenty years. This year will see a change to how you vote for the Senate. This can now be done by either numbering 6 boxes above the line or at least 12 numbers below it. F o r younger residents who are unsure
Greens offer an alternative option By John BROWN THE Greens offer an alternative to the current political mess. This election is all about caring for people and planning for the future. Health: Our hospitals are overcrowded and overstretched. Doctors and nurses are overworked and doing their best in a broken system. Only The Greens have the courage and vision to create a world class health system. Medicare must be protected and every person should have access to dental and mental health services funded by Medicare. Education: We support the Gonski funding system where every school will receive much needed financial support based on
need. Public education is the backbone of education in NSW along with TAFE and our universities which should be available to all free of charge. Jobs: The economy is changing. It’s moving away from mining into the renewable energy sector. At this stage we are being left behind and The Greens will be pushing for more retraining to get our workforce moving again. Unemployment is far too high, especially among our young people. Environment: We must provide for future generations by protecting our water resources from toxic waste and protecting our farmland from coal seam gas. The toxic spill at the Williamtown RAAF Base is a tragedy in human and environmental terms.

There are currently 112, 575 residents enrolled to vote in the Paterson division. As voting is compulsory for every Australian resident over 18, there are a range of ways for people to vote who may not be able to get there physically. A valid and sufficient reason for not voting must be presented, or a fine will be distributed. The election will be held on 2 July 2016.

Momentous Occasion ROBERT and Constance Chapman of Medowie celebrated their 60th Wedding anniversary on 9 June 2016. This momentous occasion was celebrated with their family at The Green House Restaurant at Pacific Dunes Golf Club. Bob and Connie as they are affectionately known moved to Medowie from Blacksmiths 5 years ago to be closer to their family. They have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Connie first met Bob at age 16 when she was babysitting for a friend and Bob just happened to live next door. Their paths crossed again when Connie was working at Fitts Pharmacy at The Bank Corner in Newcastle. Bob was a bus conductor and would wave as

ROYAL Australian Air Force Base Williamtown has outlined the planned flying program for fast jets on the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range for the second half of 2016. Number 77 Squadron is scheduled to conduct F/A-18A Hornet training on the range from 14 to 17 June inclusive. Number 76 Squadron is scheduled to conduct Hawk 127 operations on the range from 18 July to 12 August, weekdays only. The F/A-18A Hornets will return to the range on 29 August through to2 September. Residents living in East Medowie, Salt Ash and Lemon Tree Passage can expect the range to be used consistently throughout this period. Commander Air Combat Group, Air Commodore Steve Roberton, said aircrew minimised their use of the range and once proficiency has been attained they move onto the next stage of the course. “Last year, Hawk and Hornet aircraft used the range for 41 days, which is well under the 115 days per year Air Force is permitted to use the range under the Hawk Environment Impact Statement consent conditions.” “Air Force has a responsibility to ensure personnel are ready and able to deploy at short notice and this involves necessary air to ground training that is employed at Salt Ash Air Weapons Range,” Air Commodore Steve Roberton said. Air Commodore Roberton said every effort was made to minimise any inconvenience to residents during Salt Ash Air Weapons Range training. Baby clinic at the local Pharmacy
News Of The Area
Registered Nurse on hand By Heather SHARP MEDOWIE Pharmacy, located in the Medowie Shopping Village, is now offering a much needed service to mums and dads. Each Tuesday from 9.30am-12.30pm parents can bring their babies and young children to the Baby Clinic for a free consultation. Staffed by an experienced Registered Nurse (specialising in Paediatrics) and Midwife, Ms Megan Willis, no appointments are necessary for parents to receive expert advice about their child’s health and wellbeing. Parents can be assured they are receiving the best advice as Ms Willis has been awarded for Excellence by the Australian College of Midwives. This is particularly relevant for those expectant and first time mums in our community. Pregnant women are
also very welcome to come in to see Megan. Owner of the Medowie Pharmacy, Gavin Smith, says the decision to open a baby clinic was based on feedback from customers. Mr Smith, who has been a pharmacist for over 30 years, told Medowie News Of The Area, “I realised that my customers really wanted the expert advice of a nurse who specialises in babies and young children; someone who was compassionate to the stresses of early parenthood and could provide reassurance during those first years, especially times when the child is unwell.” Ms Willis lives in Medowie and understands the needs of babies and their families in the area. Ms Willis, herself, has five children and understands the concerns parents have and is looking forward to, “Meeting all the mums and dads with their

Love of music and children By Jenny BAXTER
ALBERT Einstein once said, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music, I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” For one Medowie business owner, appreciating the link between a life of music and quality education, has led to a successful local enterprise. Dani Tuppurainen of Medowie Dani’s Music Studio, saw an opportunity six years ago to share her love of music and working with children by establishing her own music education studio. With classes held weekly in her purpose built rooms, Mrs Tuppurainen provides classes for 2-4 year olds through the ‘Little Musik Makers’ program. “Students learn to sing, move to music, play a variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments, and learn basic music skills, concepts and terminology,” said Mrs Tupperainen.
“We listen to a variety of music genres, practice listening skills and learn about instruments.” When asked what the benefits are of learning music from such a young age, Mrs Tupperainen said, “Music and movement programs enhance cognitive, language, physical, creative and social-emotional development, as well as a love and appreciation for music itself.” She also conducts piano lessons for students from 5 years to adult, both at her studio and at Medowie Public School. Mrs Tuppurainen said, “We have a lovely end of year Christmas concert where students get to show off the pieces they have worked hard on all year, for their family and friends.” Apart from the benefits for children, Mrs Tupperainen experiences many benefits herself. She has been able to combine her greatest passions with business success, and sees opportunities to expand

Shadow Minster for The Hunter and Early Education, Kate Washington told News of The Area, “Our kids can’t possibly thrive in an environment with dilapidated guttering, mouldy walls and leaking taps.” “The Department of Education should be doing all that it can to ensure that students’ educational needs are met, including the provision of an environment, which is not in poor condition,” she said. The maintenance backlog has raised further discussion of a public high school for Medowie.
High school funds MEDOWIE’S two closest public High Schools each have an approximate $1.5 million maintenance backlog. This was documented in the NSW Department of Education’s annual report for 2014-2015. Both Hunter River and Irrawang High school have not been given the funds allocated to them for basic necessities. The unallocated money was designed to go towards general repairs such as painting, improving toilets and general maintenance.

Despite the fact the previous Liberal state member said there was a dire need for a local high school, there has been no talk of allocated funding. “I’ve been fighting for a public high school in Medowie for many years now, and every year that passes, Medowie grows and the need only increases,” said Ms Washington. There are approximately 1,000 students that travel from Medowie everyday to attend other local schools in Raymond Terrace, Maitland and Newcastle.

Customer in Germany trusted no one other than Mr Lethorn to carry out the work.
By Jenny BAXTER
THERE are times when life seems to mimic a Hollywood movie, or at least where reality seems so stretched from the norm that it’s hard to believe it isn’t a work of fiction. Recent events for Perry Lethorn, have seemed just that. Mr Lethorn is a master farrier, having worked with some of Australia’s finest riders and horses for over a decade. One of his predominant clients is Sue Hearn, member of the current Australian dressage equestrian team. Currently vying for a coveted position on the Australian Olympic Team, at the time of writing, Ms Hearn currently sits second in the rankings in the qualifying series in Europe. Mr Lethorn has worked closely with Ms Hearn and
her competition horse, Lloyd (who competes under the name Remmington), for nearly ten years, as Lloyd’s only ever farrier. So when Ms Hearn became concerned for the shodding of her beloved horse whilst in Germany, she trusted no one other than Mr Lethorn to carry out the work. She made a desperate plea over the phone, which soon saw Mr Lethorn boarding a plane for Dusseldorf and Aachen. Out of Australia a total of only 80 hours, spending close to half of that in the air, Mr Lethorn was eventually only able to carry out the work with the help of a German farrier friend, Carsten Nueman, who lent Mr Lethorn the tools he needed. Befitting the nature of this adventure story, Mr Lethorn’s bag was misplaced by the airline on
the outward journey, being returned to him only one hour before checking back in for the return flight to Australia. In a show of her intense appreciation, Ms Hearn posted a thank you message on her Facebook page, which quickly attracted the attention of equestrian lovers the world over, and many congratulatory messages being sent Mr Lethorn’s way. Since returning from Germany, Mr Lethorn has continued to spend his weekends with his mother in Medowie, as is his custom. His dedication to the equine industry has also continued, with him spending recent days assisting horse owners in the Penrith and Picton areas locate, rescue or recover their flood affected livestock.

Medical service into area and home

is now being addressed by a private medical company: there is a shortage of medical services in the suburb.
The demand for an afterhours service in Medowie is regularly the topic of chatter on local social media groups, with concerned parents and other residents frequently seeking information about General Practitioner (GP) home visits or after-hour clinics. Medowie residents can now rest easy when they or their loved one is next sick: Dial A Home Doctor has opened in the local area, with services provided to Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Raymond Terrace, and Medowie. The company is now
offering the local service with qualified GPs available to visit you in the comfort of your own home. The company has already been operating successfully in Raymond Terrace. Last week, Sabikah Rizvi Director and Ada Smith Marketing Manager of Dial a Home Doctor, Newcastle met with local member, Ms Kate Washington, to discuss their plans for expansion. Ms Sabikah told Medowie News Of The Area that they discussed, “How we can manage the patient base more efficiently in Medowie, Raymond Terrace, and
surrounding areas; we are there to support the local GPs by providing an afterhours service.” “We are a family operated business and know the importance of a community and would love to work with them,” Ms Sabikah also said. To reassure patients they will receive a continuity of care, the Newcastle franchise of Dial A Home Doctor send clinic notes to each patient’s regular GP the following day. They also provide a unique service to the area of offering bulkbilled consultations, even after

The reason they bulkbill is, according to Ms Sabikah “to serve the community especially the local elderly and young families.” The attending doctor is also able to provide complementary medicines to patients so that they are covered until they are able to get a prescription filled at the pharmacy. In addition, the Dial A Home Doctor service is staffed by doctors who live in the local area and thus understand the problems specific to the local context.

Current influx of huge rats By Heather SHARP
MEDOWIE people have appealed to the Port Stephens Council through the local State member, Kate Washington, about what they consider to be an emerging rat plague in the leafy suburb. Locals who live near the Storm Detention Basin, off Medowie Road and commonly known as the duck pond, are adamant it is a breeding ground for the vermin. Local Medowie resident and business owner, Dan Phillips, told News Of The Area that a number of neighbours had been discussing the problem which led to Mr Edden expressing his concerns directly to his local State Member, Ms Washington.
Port Stephens Council has responded to the residents’ concerns by stating they have undertaken an inspection of claiming there is no evidence of vermin in the Storm Detention Basin. Despite their being an open and cleared section of the dam, with a seat to enable people to comfortably observe and feed ducks, the Council reports that it cannot clear the area as it would need to be fenced off. The Council further claims that they cannot lay baits as the area is frequented by wildlife, domestic animals, and people; and that the rats are a seasonal issue, and advise residents to lay their own baits. When told of the Port Stephens Council’s
response, Mr Phillips is adamant that this is inadequate, saying the matter is “past the responsibility and ability of what a home owner has to control the problem; since January, we have had to fill our rat baits up regularly, about once a week.” Mr Phillips claims they are coming up from the dam saying, “If you go out late at night, you can see them running along fences; they come out of the drains all along the streets near the dam.” Following Council’s response, representation has been made to the Health Department regarding the issue. A letter made available to Medowie News Of The Area shows that Kate Washington wrote to
NSW Minister for Health, Ms Jillian Skinner on 31 May, 2016 regarding the problem. Residents look forward to receiving a full and considered response from the Health Department. Medical and press reports over the past decade have indicated there is an Australiawide increase in diseases caused by rats; with many of those problems occurring in suburbs just like Medowie. Diseases such as rat bite disease create serious medical problems and residents should be aware of the potential of such problems should the numbers of rats continue to grow.

One Hawk 127 and up to eight F/A-18 Hornets
A SINGLE Hawk 127 aircraft from Number 76 Squadron will be conducting low level flying in the Eastern Low Flying Area over the period 20-23 June between the hours 10:00-11:30am and 3:00-4:30pm. The Eastern Low Flying Area is bounded approximately by Myall Lakes, Stroud, Wards River and Taree. Up to eight F/A-18 Hornet aircraft from Number 77 Squadron will be conducting flying training over the period 20-23 June in the Western Airspace between the hours 9:30-11:30am and 1:30-3:30pm. The Western Airspace is bounded approximately by Stroud, Dungog, Branxton, Muswellbrook, Gloucester, Taree and Wards River. Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying. Air Force appreciates the support it receives from the Williamtown residents during this activity.

A SHORTAGE of free-range eggs across the country is being felt locally with limited supplies available in supermarkets in the area. Spokesperson for Egg Farmers of Australia Mr John Coward told News Of The Area a combination of colder weather, increased demand for free range eggs and a rise in egg consumption have all contributed to the shortage. “There’s a higher demand nationwide generally with a 3-4 per cent increase in sales across the board.” “Additionally, people are starting to recognise the value of eggs as a cheap form of protein adding to the demand.” Mr Coward said, “Eggs cost around $7 a kilogram compared to $25 for steak,
making them a viable protein alternative for families.” With producers struggling to keep up with the demand for eggs, many supermarket shelves have been left empty. A Coles spokesperson said the retail and food service industry across Australia is experiencing a shortage of eggs because of a significant increase in consumption and seasonal conditions. “We are working closely with our suppliers to increase production to ensure we have a full range of eggs available for customers as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said. Mr Coward said the supply of free-range eggs is expected to return to normal within two months.
EGGS: Empty supermarket shelves leave customers rushing for eggs.
Residents should be offered support “Impacted locals should be offered an adequate compensation scheme for lost income, business damage, property devaluation, health costs and any other hidden costs,” Mr Brown said.
AT a meeting with Williamtown residents last week, Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon and Greens Paterson candidate John Brown called for the Red Zone to be redrawn in light of new international contamination standards and for the NSW Environment Protection Authority to investigate and prosecute the environmental crimes occurring at the Williamtown RAAF Base.
“The Greens are committed to working with the Williamtown community to create world class standards in dealing with the contamination crisis and assisting them to rebuild their lives,” Senator Rhiannon. “We now know other communities around the country who live near RAAF bases and other centres where the toxic firefighting chemicals have been used are

suffering similar problems to what Williamtown residents are coping with. “As the federal environment agency does not have the ability to manage this crisis we are calling on state environment protection agencies to investigate and prosecute the environmental crimes occurring at Williamtown RAAF base and on other federal land.” “We should clear away
all administrative roadblocks that are stopping state environment protection agencies from taking a lead role in investigating, prosecuting and overseeing the clean-up of toxic contamination polluting soil, ground water and water ways around federal land,” said Senator Rhiannon. “The Greens are calling for the new US EPA safe level standards for the

contaminants PFOS and PFOA to become the Australian standard. “The Red Zone boundaries should be reassessed using the new safe levels of 0.07 parts per billion for both PFOS and PFOA designated by the US EPA. The current levels being used in Australia are 0.2ppb for PFOS and 0.4ppb for PFOA. Greens candidate John Brown said, “The Greens are continuing to call for residents and current and former Base workers to be offered blood tests.” “We are appalled at how
the Turnbull government is treating Williamtown residents,” he told News Of The Area. “I am calling on all candidates to back the recommendations of the Senate Inquiry into this crisis. Williamtown residents should be given every support to rebuild their lives. “Impacted locals should be offered an adequate compensation scheme for lost income, business damage, property devaluation, health costs and any other hidden costs,” Mr Brown said.

Under 14’s team UNION
FROM Page 12 With no public high school within 20km, it can be difficult to keep older players who have school mates in other teams. At this time Medowie Christian school does not have rugby union on the radar although we hope that changes soon. Our U7s team are having so much fun in their first year of rugby and Coach Reece Montgomery is enjoying watching them increase in ability and confidence every week. He is looking forward to seeing them grow into a strong future Marauders unit. The U10s have improved sight out of mind this season! Their footy-minds just clicked and after a few years of trying to figure it all out they are hitting the ground running which is awesome. Coaches Daniel Bezuidenhout, Jordan Rimmington and Adam Cook are building on BJ Linaker’s training of the past few years and they have them working hard. The boys have won one game this season but have only lost the rest by a few points, which is really promising. The U11s have had a ripper of a season so far and are not looking like stopping! Trained by Kayla Ridgeway,
the boys are in top form and they have worked hard to get themselves to 4th on the ladder which lines them up nicely for semi finals. They are hungry for the wins and are a great tight team unit. The U14s had a really rocky start to the season. We had so few players return to sign up this year in our age group that it was doubtful we would have the numbers. As the doubt increased, more families took their sons to other clubs, which is a shame but understandable. The remaining players (at this time around 8) and parents, with the club, put in a huge effort over a few weeks to reach as many potential players as possible to get at least 15 players. The kids begged their mates at school, parents facebooked and got the local Christian school to highlight the need for players. The hard work payed off and we now have a team of 22 great boys. Out of these 22 (aged between 11 and 15) approximately 8 have played rugby union before with a couple have come from League, many though had never passed a ball or tackled before. Coached by Tony Woodfield, Shane Wood and Dwayne Murphy, the boys have had to start from scratch to form new bonds and learn each other’s playing styles,
10 MEDOWIE NEWS OF THE AREA
not to mention that half the team needed to learn how to play the game at all. Fortunately they are a great, responsive group of boys who are learning well and are giving it their all every week. Mark and Tom Underwood have also provided training assistance which is much appreciated. As expected games have not been easy and there have been a fair number of injuries, which is the coach’s main focus at this point. We are now in talks with Hunter Junior Rugby Union to get some extra coaching and development assistance for the boys which is a real bonus. This team has incredible potential and if they can improve their game together for this season and another we know that they will make their presence known in the competition. Medowie and Districts Junior Rugby is a small club, surrounded by giants, but we have some great local talent coming through that we are determined to help grow. If there are any keen rugbyheads in the community who are happy to volunteer their time at training on Tuesday and Thursday nights we appreciate any help or advice. Contact Jimmy Hough on 0422 072 713. Thank you again to all of our 2016 Sponsors. Go Marauders!!!

Junior Marauders having a ball
UNION Medowie & District Rugby Union By Jude WOODFIELD THE Medowie and Districts Junior
q Marauders are enjoying a great season! We have a great small committee of parents, most of whom have been a part of the club for a while.
