Preschool move off base By Heather SHARP
THE community based, not-for-profit Williamtown Preschool, currently operating on the Williamtown RAAF base where it has been for over 40 years, is set for a big move in 2017. The centre, which caters for 23 children per day, will be temporarily relocating to 20a Kangaroo Street, Raymond Terrace for 2017, before moving to a purpose-built facility in Medowie, due for completion in 2018. And the reason for the move? As told to Medowie News Of The Area by the Preschool’s Director Ms Michelle Curtin, “There is international research suggesting that small children may be more sensitive to noise than adults.” “Although there are no
standards for children’s exposure, and extensive noise testing was conducted on bases, it was decided in the best interests of the children to relocate off base.” With the support of the RAAF, the preschool will continue to operate and serve both Defence and civilian families in the early childhood education of young children in Williamtown, Medowie, and surrounds. “We are looking forward to being out in the community and being able to continue to provide a service to Defence and community families,” Ms Curtin said. For more information about the Preschool’s relocation or about the Preschool itself, please contact Centre Director Ms Michelle Curtin at: wlmpres@bigpond. com, phone 4034 7642, or visit williamtownpreschool. com.

Firefighters humbled by community support By Heather SHARP MEDOWIE residents have once again shown their community spirit and generosity with various donations to firefighters battling the recent Lone Pine/Medowie bushfires. Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins told Medowie News Of The Area, “The support from the community has been overwhelming, and at the same time greatly appreciated.” Demonstrating the ferocity of the fire, brigades came from areas including the Mid North Coast, Hunter Valley, Wyong, Gosford, Mid Coast, Hawkesbury, Lake Macquarie, Hornsby/ Ku-ring-gai, Warringah/ Pittwater, and Cumberland. The fire required a multi agency, multi district, multi Brigade response, and many Fire Brigades responded to the call for assistance in battling the flames. Captain Collins

appreciated by the brigade members. Two Medowie Christian School Stage 3 students, Anna Ratcliffe and Connor Witenden, delivered the packs to the Medowie Rural Fire Station last week, along with Mrs Gill, Mrs Davis (Head of Primary) and Mrs Deal (Deputy Principal/Head of Secondary). The students, who provided letters and artwork for each pack, were inspired by year 12 Medowie Christian School student Clayton Louis. Clayton chose to selflessly stand with Medowie Rural Fire Brigade and fight fires in the local area instead of attending his Stage 6 Camp with his classmates. The school would also like to say a special thank you to Medowie Coles and Medowie Woolworths for their contribution towards the making of the survival packs.
Local business and regulars on the community event scene, Rod and Kylie Gurr from Hennessy Coffee, was a welcome addition at the station, graciously supplying beverages to the tired and worn out crew. Medowie Christian School students also demonstrated civic responsibility by supplying snack packs with messages of support, which were gratefully received by both locals and visiting crews. Many other businesses and individuals also supported the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade throughout the mammoth effort to bring the fires under control. “One group that particularly deserves our thanks are the families and friends of our brigade members. They have to put up with our volunteers coming home often tired, filthy, and reeking of smoke,” Captain Collins said. The Lone Pine fire burnt through approximately 9036 hectares. The school received some fantastic feedback and responses to their generosity. “I’d like to thank Medowie Christian School and all the children involved giving us firefighters a survival pack full of treats,” Bazza John said. “The thought touched my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you.” “Thank you guys so very much for the food packages last night at the Lone Pine fire. It is that sort of community spirit that makes this country great,” Jason Plumridge from the Berowra Waters Brigade said. “We as RFS members, really appreciate the efforts you made, and a special thanks to Connor, aged 11, who put together my care package. Thank you to Medowie Christian School for playing a part in showing our wonderful Rural Fire Service how much we appreciate them.

Jenni the recycling florist By Rachael VAUGHAN MANY of us can raise our hand and say we love a good coffee. The invention of the coffee pod has enabled coffee lovers to enjoy a quality brew at the press of a button. But what is the environmental price of this convenience? Over three million coffee pods are consumed in Australia each day, however most of these pods end up in landfill. It has been estimated that these pods can take between 150 and 500 years to breakdown. Nespresso, one of the world’s most well-known coffee pod systems, has come up with a solution, and Medowie is playing a part in their new initiative. Nespresso has developed a concept they call ‘Ecolaboration’. Ecolaboration is all about collecting used capsules and then recycling them instead of having so many end up in landfill. According to Nespresso, there are over 14,000 collection points all over the world with over 1000 in Australia alone. Nespresso’s network of collection points include their Boutiques found

Medowie’s own ‘Jen’s Flowers’ has been selected as one of these Boutique collection points. Owner/operator Jenni Poljak was more than happy to become part of the initiative in order to do her part to help
the planet. “I love a coffee as much as the next person, but the amount of landfill these coffee pods create is just incredible, so when the opportunity came up to help do something about it, I didn’t think twice,” she told News Of The Area. Please deposit your used pods at ‘Jen’s Flowers’ on Medowie Road, Medowie.
Notice of Motion
Debate on toxic RAAF base contamination at the House of Representatives rises FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has submitted a Notice of Motion to the Turnbull Government on toxic RAAF base contamination with a view to it being debated in the House of Representatives before Parliament rises this year. “I have been working on the motion with colleagues, but yesterday’s revelation that 12 other sites are affected alongside Williamtown and Oakey makes this a pressing,

urgent national issue,” Ms Swanson said. “It must be debated in the House, and the Government must be held to account on its commitments.” The motion calls on the Turnbull Government to set up a national intergovernmental taskforce to co-ordinate the response to PFAS (per- and poly-fluoro alkyl substances) contamination; develop nationally consistent health, containment, management
and remediation protocols; and provide a breakdown of the $55 million allocated from the Defence budget to deal with contamination. The motion also seeks a timeline of when and how the issue will be brought to COAG and calls for transparency around the government’s Interdepartmental Committee on PFAS. In regard to Williamtown, it calls on the Government to inform residents when its
FORMER Salt Ash resident and manager of BP Salt Ash, Steven Nicholson, is now a qualified Justice of the Peace (JP). This means he can act as a witness to a person making a statutory declaration or affidavit and certify that an original document is a true and accurate copy, among other things. After all checks and identification have been verified by the government, it can take up to three months to receive confirmation of a successful application. Mr Nicholson told News Of The Area, “I’ve wanted to do it for a long time, as I know how hard it can be for the community to find a JP.” “After a couple of years of hoping, I finally did it, and am happy to say I have now been qualified for two months.” There are now six registered JPs in Salt Ash and approximately 70 in Medowie. While the process is free, it can be a very timely endeavour. “Residents are welcome

proposed dialogue will begin on buybacks of properties contaminated by PFAS to ensure income support to affected commercial fishers to March 2017 and advocates for leniency by lending institutions with respect to business and home loan repayments and lending practices for affected properties. “I am angry that so many other communities have to go through what we have gone through, but I am determined that my community of Williamtown will not have to wait any longer for solutions,” Ms Swanson said.

We Will Remember By Rachael VAUGHAN
REMEMBRANCE Day was celebrated nationwide this week, with Medowie RSL Sub Branch hosting a moving service for attendees. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to
protect the nation. This year, there was a nationwide focus on the mental health of returned servicemen. Chaplain David Deal of Overflow Church spoke to the crowd about the sacrifices of Australians in conflicts, and the lasting effects that can still be seen. “It is the day when an
Armistice was signed nearly a century ago to end a war that was called the Great War, not because there was anything great in the sense of good about it but more because it was the greatest in terms of scope and sacrifice,” David told News Of The Area. The chaplain’s speech contained the moving words of David Noonan, author of
Those We Forget. In his account of the war, Mr Noonan notes that, “As a proportion of its fighting force of men who were exposed to a theatre of war, Australia’s army suffered more deaths, more hospitalisations for wounding and more hospitalisations for illness and injury than the armies of Britain, Germany, France, Canada or the United States.” The statistics of Australian soldiers who survived are

startling. “More than half of them were discharged medically unfit. Of those who were not discharged medically unfit, 60 percent of them applied for pension help in the post war period; so, four out of five servicemen survivors were damaged or disabled in some way.” For those who did not survive, Mr Noonan estimates that some “62,300 died . . . approximately 550 by their
own hand.” Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan and Medowie RSL President Ian Harding also spoke at the service, offering their thanks to heroes of all forms in our community. Wreaths were laid by the three Medowie primary schools, Meryl Swanson’s office, Kate Washington’s office, the RSL Ladies Auxiliary and Medowie News Of The Area.

East Coast Air Defence Exercise A MAJOR defence training exercise is underway this week and will continue for two weeks. The East Coast Air Defence Exercise 2016 is designed to train Air Force personnel in a tactical field exercise that involves defensive counter air and command and control operations. The majority of exercise flying will commence on Monday 14 November and conclude on Wednesday 23 November.
Flying activities will be conducted from RAAF Base Williamtown in NSW. Aircraft from RAAF Base Williamtown will include up to 16 F/A-18A Hornet aircraft, from Numbers 3 and 77 Squadrons, and up to two E-7A Wedgetail aircraft from Number 2 Squadron. Flying operations from Williamtown will be conducted between 10:30am and 6:00pm each day of the exercise. There is no scheduled night

flying for aircraft involved in this exercise. Noise management and environment impact are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying and the Air Force appreciates the support it receives from the local community during this exercise. Information on aircraft noise and current flying activities is available at www. defence.gov.au/aircraftnoise or by calling 1300 DEFENCE (1300 333 362) and asking to be connected to Royal Australian Air Force Base Williamtown.

finished, we are free to bring you the story. Nelson Bay resident Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson was a highway patrol officer and a loving husband and father to two young boys. Known as Richo to his mates, Sergeant Richardson died in the line of duty during a police pursuit earlier this year. His wife and fellow police officer, Margie, not only lost the man she loved but also faced an uncertain future with her two sons, with one
suffering from autism. A Current Affair and an army of big-hearted volunteers and suppliers stepped in to help Richo’s family. Margie was overcome with joy and gratitude when walking around her newly renovated home and seeing all the new features that had been generously donated. Her home had been completely transformed and made into a much safer environment for Margie and her children . During the reveal, Margie said that, “Our lives changed terribly seven and a half months ago and I didn’t think
that I would ever feel better or right again.” “I can’t express enough how much this means to the boys and me. It’s just amazing, you’ve made our dreams come true. I’ll never be able to thank you all enough, so thank you,” she said. The renovation included a safer play area for her children, brand new kitchen, complete refurbishment of a deck that was once unsafe and brand new appliances and furniture that the Richardson family will be able to enjoy for years to come.

AFL Dreams Football prodigy begun his path to greatness A LOCAL Australian Rules football prodigy has only just begun on his path to greatness, and just like another Hunter Valley AFL product, Isaac Heeney, we may well be watching him play in an AFL Grand Final in the years to come. Jaydn Healy has been playing Aussie Rules football since he was four-years-old and it doesn’t appear he’ll be stopping any time soon. The Port Stephens Power standout has excelled in the local competition, receiving his team’s ‘Best and Fairest’ award each of the last three years. Jaydn’s efforts have also led him to the Hunter Academy of Sport’s AFL program and, more recently, selection into the Sydney Swans Academy squad.
The Swans Academy is a three-year commitment and requires the Healy family to make a substantial sacrifice for Jaydn to chase his dream of becoming an AFL player. In addition to the weekly trips to Sydney for Swans Academy training, Jaydn’s commitments to the Hunter Academy as well as his club can equate to a training regime encompassing five nights a week. As Jaydn’s mother Terri explained to News Of The Area, “In order to allow us to be on time in Sydney, for the (Swans) training sessions, I would collect Jaydn from school in Mayfield either as school finished or sometimes even earlier.” The Swans training days would often result in a 7-8 hour round trip on Wednesdays with his other commitments fitting in around the Swans. For Jaydn and his family, the
sacrifices are immense, but they are all in it together. “A big commitment is required by the whole family to allow for Jaydn to chase his dream,” Mrs Healy said. “[We are] taking him to sometimes five training nights in one week, along with settling into the structure and routine of high school, homework and assessments.” Even though we are currently in the football off-season, you can still catch Jaydn playing cricket for the Medowie Under 14’s team and playing touch footy with the Medowie Yowies. Until the 2017 AFL season, then it all starts again. Medowie News Of The Area wishes Jadyn all the best with his sporting endeavours, and will keep readers up to date on his achievements.
