CODY Thacker is a young man turning heads, and making his mark on the world, all before his tenth birthday. The Medowie Public School student was in year five when he submitted a working ‘Eco house’ to his class teacher for a school project, complete with a powerpoint presentation. Mr Gould, classroom teacher from Medowie Public School, was Cody’s
classroom teacher at the time, and immediately recognised Cody’s amazing potential. He asked Cody to apply for the GATS (Gifted and Talented) Enrichment Program held at Irrawang High School. Cody was accepted into the program, where he then met Ms Wotton and Mrs Cath Donnelly. Mrs Donnelly asked Cody to enter his Eco House in prestigious Arthur Phillips Geography Awards, where he amazed

ANZAC Day is nearly here, and Port Stephens is set set and ready to host another year of moving Dawn Services and parades to commemorate this very special day. Schools have already acknowledged Anzac Day early in heartfelt and respectful services across Port Stephens, as Anzac Day this year falls during the school holidays. Warrant Officer Chris Whittington attended one such service in Medowie this year, and told News Of The Area, “The Catafalque Party and I are honoured to attend these services.” “They are always so thoughtfully

Bottles for the Dogs
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Return and Earn recycling scheme has been a much loved experience for one Medowie youngster. Eleven year old Jessica Smith did not hesitate when she learned of the scheme, telling her parents that she wanted to collect bottles and cans and donate the money. When many young people her age would have plenty of things they’d like to spend their hard-earned money on, Jessica only had one thing in mind. Helping rescue animals. Jessica has a collection of animals at home, which includes four dogs, two lorikeets and fish. Jessica and her family are avid supporters of all groups and activities that support the care of animals. . Some of their animals are rescue animals, including Macey the dog, who was adopted from the charity Jessica has chosen to donate to. Her chosen charity is Nova Pooch Rescue Inc., a not for profit charity based in Newcastle who undertake invaluable animal rescue work
with a team of volunteers and foster carers. Deb from Nova Pooch Rescue Inc said, “At just eleven years of age, young Jessica is truly an inspiration.” “Working hard, collecting recyclable bottles and cashing them in, Jessica raised funds with the specific aim to aid animals in need.” “The Nova Team are very proud to be considered and supported by Jessica and her

Family, and we say thank you Jessica, you are an Animal Angel.” they said. Jessica has been collecting diligently for a while now, and even added some of her own birthday money to her donation tally, which now exceeds $130. The future is bright for this caring and compassionate young lady, who has shown her community that she is passionate about, and committed to, animal advocacy.

matching. Free food & drink will be provided on the day by the Medowie Lions Club. Jamie Brewster, one of the event organisers, told News Of The Area, “Come along and celebrate Youth Week 2018 at Medowie Skatepark.” “This is a free event that includes something for everyone.” “The event is being run by UP&UP, a Newcastle based organisation that works to engage young people and the wider community in creative arts projects, with the aim of promoting self-expression, well-being and more inclusive communities,” he said. The workshops will be run by youth workers, professional street artists and a Newcastle DJ. The Youth Week 2018 theme of “Unity through Diversity” will be celebrated throughout the event by young people and the wider community. Everyone is welcome. Come along for a fun enjoyable day.
IT is a commonly discussed point by parents in Medowie and Raymond Terrace that they wish there were more playgrounds in the area, in particular gated areas for children to play safely away from the road. As the school holidays rapidly approach, signalling the end of term one, Wirreanda Public School’s Principal, Ms Philippa Young, shared some exciting news with News Of The Area. Wirreanda Public School in Medowie and Hunter River High School in Heatherbrae have successfully applied to be a part of a new ‘Share our Space’ program, allowing the schools to make their facilities available to the community during the April
school holidays. For Wirreanda, this means the NOLA, MPC COLA, Bottom Field and Primary equipment will be open from 8am until 6pm, seven days a week, from 16 April 2018 to 27 April 2018. Bunting will be strung to separate the play areas from school buildings, which will be out of bounds. Signage will be placed at the entrances to notify the times of access, and nonpermitted activities Cleaners will arrive at 7am to open the gates and install empty rubbish bins at the entrance A Security Guard will be on site while the school is open, and the Security Guard will lock the gates at 6pm The gated playground and wide open spaces of the playgrounds at Wirreanda
will be the perfect spot for children to meet and play safely during the school holidays. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said “This is great news for families in the Hunter as it not only will give parents and children access to more open green space, but also provide them with more options for school holiday activities.” This trial program has the potential to be a wonderful opportunity for Medowie’s young people during school breaks, and it is hoped that all residents will treat the school grounds with respect during this time, to ensure that this opportunity is offered to Port Stephens Schools again.

Marriah Band at the Tea Gardens Hotel By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE owners of the Tea Gardens Hotel, Ben and Emily Hanson, have already made a good impression on the community in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, after only a year of owning the Hotel, and making some great changes. This weekend, if you’ve never been to Tea Gardens, this is the weekend to plan a trip up North to try it out. Friday night there is a kids disco at the Hotel, with party food, fun games and tunes for the kids to have a ball while the adults kick back in the restaurant and bar and enjoy a meal.
Tea Gardens Hotel are becoming well known for their top quality, fresh cooked foods. You can enjoy a variety of meals, from their fish cones and great steaks, to pizzas and gourmet pies. On saturday night, come along and enjoy ‘Marriah Band’ as they cover all the classics. Marriah’s high energy riff driven rock echoes influences from Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Cold Chisel, Divinyls and the Gunner’s, plus many more favourites from the 70’s and 80’s as the foundation of their repertoire. Annie Cee, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist from
Marriah Band, said, “Possessing an extensive and varied rock pedigree, we came together four years ago and have been gigging country/city and up and down the coast ever since.” “We deliver a high energy packed show, and will have you rockin’ out with our infectious sounds for a night to remember.” Marriah Band is Annie Cee on lead vocalist and rhythm guitar, Scott Grice on lead guitar and back up vocals, Paul Job on drums and percussion, and Wayne McCrae on bass guitar, vocals and on stage sound. Marriah have a diverse repertoire that is guaranteed to make for a great night out.

KICKBOXING Kids in Medowie have come away from the recent state titles with some impressive results. On 25 March, four students from Medowie’s ‘The Sweat Shed’ participated in the ISKA NSW OPEN kickboxing and karate tournament in Sydney. Coach Daniel
Bezuidenhout told News Of The Area, “This was the first ever tournament that three of the students, Harry, Jack and Tiana had entered, and only Divan’s second time.” “This was really impressive to see them reach this level so quickly, and confidently.” The youngest competitor of them all was Jack Blue, only five years old, and he won the point sparing and clash sparing making him the NSW open champion in his age group. Tiana Bezuidenhout, six years old, got a third place in point fighting in a division that had only boys. She was fourth in the clash sparing. Harry Cosgrove and Divan Bezuidenhout just

missed out, but still put up an awesome fight and made their Coach, families and fellow team mates proud. Daniel said, “There are two more tournaments later this year and I believe we will have a few more fighters that will be ready to put their hand up, and show everyone the Medowie kickboxing spirit and talent.” “The Sweat shedkickxercise” kids classes are a great way for children to increase fitness, confidence and self awareness. Kids classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm and adult cardio kickboxing 6-7pm, and the group can be found on Facebook.
