Firie Memorial Climb By Rachael VAUGHAN
WHILE we all swelter in the heat, hide in the air conditioning and wish for cooler days, Medowie RFS firefighter Darryl Luck is training in his firefighting gear any spare moment he gets when not fighting fires. The 47-year-old has been a member of the Medowie brigade for 14 years, and is currently training five to six days a week at Plus Fitness Medowie for some very special events. The first event on 12 March will see Darryl complete the ‘Scott Firefighter Stair Climb’, which is sixty-nine floors of the Columbia Centre in Seattle, Washington. Twenty-four kilograms

of firefighter gear including breathing apparatus must be used to complete the climb. This event raises money for Leukemia and Lymphoma research and services. The second event on the 17 March, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day parade, will see Darryl marching with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), New Zealand and fellow Australian firefighters. Event three on 19 March is a particularly special event, the New York City Memorial Stair Climb, in memory of firefighters who lost their lives in the 911 attacks on America. This event takes place in the No. 4 World Trade Centre, New York, and

“YOU won’t recognise the place!” This was Port Stephens Council (PSC) Cr. Steve Tucker’s comment on proposed developments at Tanilba Bay which include a roundabout, construction of a new fire station and major drainage and roadworks. “President Wilson Walk and Success St. will be rebuilt to link in with the roundabout. Drainage and kerbing will also be factored in along with water main provisions and telecom facilities,” he said. “We (PSSC) apologise for the long drawn out process but plans have been approved and the construction stage of the station will soon be under way.”

consists of a 72 floor climb, whilst wearing 24 kilograms of kit. Darryl told News Of The Area that the symbolism of this event is very special. “Only 343 firefighters can climb in this memorial climb as they represent the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11 2001 at the World Trade Centre attack.” “Each firefighter carries a photo of one of the firefighters who lost their life on that day as a mark of respect.” The climb raises money for the ‘Friends of Firefighters’ charity and the 9-11 Tribute
Centre. The Friends of Firefighters charity looks after the physical and mental health of New York Firefighters and their families, and the 9-11 Tribute Centre is a place where the public can learn the personal stories of survivors, first responders, family members of those who died and local residents of New York affected by what they experienced during the attacks. “A p p r o x i m a t e l y 1900 firefighters from over 5 countries attend. I am the first firefighter from NSW to attend either of the two climbs,” Darryl said. News Of The Area sends Darryl with our best wishes for this special experience.

Jack Looks Back
Bushfire Preparedness A WET winter and good spring growth means a higher-thanaverage bushfire threat this summer, with hot and dry conditions forecast for the coming months. Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said, “Now is the time residents should be inspecting and preparing their homes and properties.” “Also think about what you’re going to do with your pets and what to do if you’re travelling.” The following list should be part of your plan: • When will we leave? What will be your sign to leave? It could be smoke in your area, or as soon as you find out there’s a fire near you. • Where will we go? Where’s a meeting place that’s safe and away from a fire area? It might be a friend or relative’s place, or even a shopping centre. • How will we get there? What road will you take? What’s your backup plan in case the road is blocked? • What will we take? Make a list of what you’ll take in the event of a fire. Remember to include pets, identification and irreplaceable items such as photos or documents.
• Who will we call? There should be someone we can call to let them know we’re leaving and that we’ve got there safely. • What is our backup plan? What if things don’t go to plan? Identify a safer location nearby such as a neighbour’s home that is well prepared, or a place of last resort. If you decide to stay, questions should include: Will anyone in the family will be at risk by staying; will the family cope in an emergency situation; does the household have the equipment in the RFS Decide to Stay checklist and is there a backup plan? It is not safe to stay with your property under some circumstances, such as if the fire danger rating is Catastrophic; if there is an Extreme fire danger rating and your home is not specially designed or constructed for bush fires; or if your property is not well maintained. Under these circumstances you should always leave early. Remember that bush and grass fires can move quickly and catch you off guard. If you are caught in a fire, protect yourself from the heat.

as a contractor who was engaged in 1962 to build the roads in LTP for Cambridge Credit which subdivided much of the area. They then sold the newly created housing blocks. In fact, they named a road after Jack as well as naming streets after the directors and their wives. Cambridge Credit went broke leaving many investors (including locals) with burnt fingers. “They had an interesting way of selling the blocks,” Jack said.
“The subdivision was heavily advertised in Sydney and they flew prospective buyers up from Rose Bay in Sunderland flying boats.” “If you bought a block of land you got the flight for free. If not, you paid the return fare.” Jack operated a quarry in LTP. He later contracted to the ACI silica sandmining company which mined the white sand found in the dunes behind Tanilba Golf Club. bush fire warnings and operate our barbecues safely. Australian barbecue habits can be pretty simple; we’re happy to slap a bit of meat between two pieces of bread, add a big dollop of tomato sauce and eat it while we’re enjoying a beverage or two. If the barbie we’re having on a particular day involves preparing lots of salads, potato bake, fried onions and other dishes as well, we’re equally happy about that. The really fantastic thing about our Australian barbecue habits is meeting, greeting and partying with our mates and family over the good old Aussie barbie and whatever comes along with it. It’s the mateship and the sharing of good food and good times that
is the priceless part of our Aussie lifestyle and what we all enjoy. One local who embodies this spirit is our own Medowie Meats owner, Ben Callen. Ben donates quietly to charity after charity, and is a well-known face about town at functions and gettogethers. He always has a friendly smile and a kind word for locals and visitors alike, and as we approach Australia Day, we at News Of The Area think locals like Ben embody the true Aussie Spirit. So, if you choose to celebrate this Australia Day, or just want to organise a catch up with a mate, support local small businesses for your supplies, throw something on the barbie and join us.
The Aussie Barbie Tradition
By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Australian ‘barbie’ tradition is famous. We look forward to our weekend breaks and the great Aussie barbecue is such a big part of our leisure time. We invite friends and family to our homes or we go to theirs and we share some chops, steaks or sausages over a beer, wine or a champagne and enjoy catching up with people who are special to us. Our local councils are supportive of this Aussie tradition, and most of our public parks have barbecue facilities and a large majority of family picnics and outings include an Australian barbeque. Of course during this scorching time of year, we are conscious of our

Australia Day Events in Port Stephens By Heather SHARP
WITH momentum growing for Australia’s day of nationhood celebration to change, the public holiday has become increasingly controversial in recent years. However, the fact remains that it is a gazetted public holiday that in many ways marks the end of the Australian summer, with students going back to school in the week following Australia Day. Port Stephens Council has many events organised in key spots to suit a wide range of interests this Australia Day, 26 January 2017. The centres of Nelson Bay, Karuah, Raymond Terrace, and Lemon Tree Passage will also be hosting free events for the community. Starting at 8am, Riverside Park at Raymond Terrace has a free breakfast
followed by the Australia Day Civic Ceremony. A RAAF flyover will also feature at Riverside Park. Meanwhile at Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage, a free barbecue breakfast, activities, live music and other entertainment including the Australian Army Band will feature at the family friendly event. The Karuah RSL Club will once again organise and host an event which includes cooking competitions, an auction of local produce, a thong throwing competition, bowls and live music. All money raised is donated to the Rural Fire Brigades of Karuah, North Arm Cove and Limeburners Rural Fire Brigades. Fireworks in the evening will cap off the day’s events. Feature events will be at Fly Point, Nelson Bay. Commencing with a street parade from 9am on Laman Street, Nelson Bay and concluding at the Rotary

Hi Jasminda, I am eight-years-old. I’m having a party soon and my dad suggested I write to you to see if you had any ideas on what we could do?
Miss SL, Salt Ash Oh, to be eight again. What a delightful stage of life. I’m trying to recall my own party at that age. It was definitely a backyard affair with a homemade cake and the obligatory game of Pass the Parcel. That’s what we did back in the day and from what I can remember we had a rollicking good time. But things have changed, and may I suggest not for the better. I can pinpoint it to a specific event. It was at a party with a child who looked remarkably like a young Donald Trump. The kid kept throwing himself on the ground and kicking and screaming when things didn’t go his way. He screamed when he didn’t win the Egg and Spoon race and made a complete jackass of himself during Pin the Tail on the Donkey (excuse my Americanism there, Miss SL, your dad will understand the pun). Instead of the parent saying, “You naughty little psychopath; go to your room”, they gave him a prize for being a jerk. That was the beginning of the age of entitlement, when parents started rewarding mediocrity and bad behaviour. At first it was just a Freddo Frog in every layer of the Pass the Parcel so no one missed out, and now we have event-managed parties for children. There are marquees and inflatable jumping castles, canapés and hired entertainment. There are personal assistants pandering to kids wearing tiaras. Sweet Miss SL, the world has gone a little bit mad. Buck the trend, little one. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with fairy bread and several games of Non-musical Statues. Your daddy will thank me. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Big Chop for Cancer By Rachael VAUGHAN
IN 2016, approximately 650 children aged between zero and fourteen were newly diagnosed with a form of cancer. One young resident with a heart of gold decided she would try and do something to help.
Ten-year-old Medowie Christian School student Anjah Jedniuk wanted to do something that was extra special for children suffering from cancer. She decided to grow her hair long for the sole

Anjah has been growing and measuring her hair for months with a simple goal to help others in need, and to give them something just for them. This week, she reached her goal and was able to book in for a very special hair cut. Anjah’s hair plait measured in at 36cm, which has been donated to Variety Australia. This charity uses donated hair to make wigs for young people battling cancer and illness. A wig can cost a family thousands of dollars, so Anjah’s gift is a much needed donation for the charity. A wig gives children who have lost their hair
an all-important boost of confidence. Anjah’s mother, Anita, told News Of The Area, “As parents we are very proud of Anjah’s selfless actions.” “We are very grateful that she is part of a wonderful school and local community where kindness and supporting others is part of who we are.” “We can’t wait to see what she works towards next,” she said. Holly from Forever Hair and Beauty in Medowie donated her time and the cost of her cut to Variety Australia. If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause yourself, all the details can be found on the Variety Australia website. Congratulations, Anjah, on your wonderful donation and caring attitude to those less fortunate than yourself.

MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY
Multicultural Medowie By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE cleverly created ‘Lamb ads’ that are released every year close to Australia Day always manage to share a poignant, thoughtprovoking message. They are filled with familiar faces from Australian Film and Television, and encourage us to think outside the box as we celebrate the day our nation marks as Australia Day. This year’s ad gave us a timely reminder that we are a nation formed on the experiences of immigrants coming to our country by boat. The debate of Australia Day and the date it falls on will continue as long as the date remains the same, given it is a date that marks dispossession for Indigenous people. It is important to acknowledge the rich and
incredibly diverse cultural history of our country, and use this time to embrace the positive experiences we can have as a result. Medowie is slowly forming a rich cultural network of families from all over the globe, who are able to bring with them their own experiences, traditions and customs, and integrate them into a new world of experiences. We have a strong network of Indigenous Australians whose ancestors inhabited this land long before European settlement in the area, and whose connection to culture and tribal areas of significance is strong. We are now a meltingpot of nationalities including Italian, Chinese, French, South African, American, British, German and Greek families, to

name a few. One such family is the Kruger Family, who migrated from South Africa in 2011, and now call Medowie home. The mother of the Kruger Family, Yolande,
told News Of The Area, “We love this country, its people and rich heritage and culture.” “We enjoy the great Aussie lifestyle, beautiful surroundings and beaches.” “Australia provides
us with so many opportunities where we can contribute positively to the economy, community and country and know that our children have a great future ahead of them,” she said.

Our Small Businesses $1.3M makeover are urged to assert on for Henderson Park, Lemon Tree. late payments MEMBER for Paterson Meryl Swanson is urging small businesses to have their say on the way they are paid by big businesses and governments. The Payment Times and Practices Inquiry, being conducted by the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell, closes this Friday, and will report to the Government in March. Businesses can fill out an online survey and/or make a
submission at www.asbfeo. gov.au. Small businesses comprise 97% of all Australian businesses and employ 4.8 million people. Collectively, they are owed $26 billion at any one time. Late payments, and adverse payment practices of some big businesses, have been identified as issues that critically impact on small business. The Ombudsman will investigate government
legislation, policies and directives and contract terms in relation to procurements and look at what has been implemented overseas. The inquiry is seeking information demonstrating the need for action in relation to current payment practices in Australia, and welcomes the views of all businesses and organisations. The inquiry closes at close of business on Friday 13 January.

THREE camera shy Tilligerry locals made good use of the new boat ramp recently and fish cleaning tables at Lemon Tree Passage recently. They returned from ‘just outside’ with a large haul of snapper. Fresh bait was their

secret which they picked up on the way out. The big reds were caught on the bottom and that’s not all! Over the same ground they jigged up a great feed of large squid. The new $1,300,000 makeover of Henderson Park at Lemon Tree Passage has
been a drawcard for locals and holidaymakers alike. Included in the joint State / Port Stephens Council funded ‘Better Boating’ initiative are two new boat ramps and fish cleaning tables and trailer friendly parking.

Flying Visit to Tilly
News Of The Area
Jade Court Resto owners and residents are back from Sydney for business and pleasure and to visit some dear friends. By G & C Walker
LONG time residents and owners of the Jade Court restaurant returned recently to visit friends and for business reasons. They moved to Burwood, Sydney and are semi retired although David does some casual work. Lyn looks after the house and cares for Nathan, now in year four and Andrew who is completing his final year of IT study at university.
Their three graduate daughters workasanaccountant, radiographer and physiotherapist. One is to be married in the new year. They miss the tranquillity of Tilligerry but with the extended family firmly entrenched in the Sydney scene, they see the move as permanent but love to return for a holiday.

Disability Services: Have Your Say
PORT Stephens Council is seeking community input in the process of developing a Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). The Disability Inclusion Action Plan will aim to help guide Port Stephens Council to improve access and inclusion for people with a disability. Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator Jeff Bretag said the participation of the Port Stephens community is invaluable.
“We are seeking feedback from people with a disability, their families and their carers about what improvements can be made to ensure people have equal access to buildings, activities, facilities, services and information,” Mr Bretag said. “The survey should take only five minutes to complete, but community input is invaluable to future planning for Port Stephens.” Council is committed to creating an environment
that improves the quality of experiences for people living with a disability. It is committed to planning decisions that support an equitable and inclusive community for everyone including those with a disability, their carers and family members. The survey is open until 31 January 2017 and can be completed online via haveyoursay. portstephens.nsw.gov.au/ Disability Access Plan or a hard copy can be provided on request.

OPINION
Washington focus on Diesel
Dear News Of The Area
Port Stephens Council must explain to residents how a diesel leak was able to enter a public park and then the Hunter River before it was noticed. There are stringent regulations around the storage of diesel. It’s clear that there’s been a failure of systems, a lack of care and lack of
oversight in order for this pollution event to have occurred. It’s disappointing to see Port Stephens Council receiving yet another slap on the wrist for its poor environmental management. Our community is fed up. Boomerang Park is the oldest park in the Hunter. Port Stephens Council has already allowed significant development on site, it’s been
carved up ready to be sold off, now it’s polluted the historic park. Council ought to be caring for the much-loved park, not treating it with contempt.

Testing Time for Pensioners By Heather SHARP
A NEW year and a new change to the Asset Test for Pensioners. Amidst the controversies of politicians claiming travel entitlements for personal business, and the Centrelink debt debacle, pensioners are being financially impacted by the Federal Government’s decision to change the Asset Test. Pensions that are affected include: Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Widow B Pension, and Wife Pension. The changes have been met with anger by some pensioners who say they are not fair and will make their lives more financially difficult; while others say that the pension is a safety net and the assets test is fair and will support those in the community who are most vulnerable. In a reprieve for homeowners, the family home remains exempt from the assets test. Local resident Ms Jan

Noake told Medowie News Of the Area, “Pensioners have worked hard during their adult life and paid taxes accordingly, yet now we are being made to feel as though we are bleeding the system dry.” “I worked for more than 50 years, paying taxes, and have budgeted for my retirement carefully, using my Super as far as it can be stretched, but am being punished in a way for the reality that I may one day reply on the pension.” C o m p u l s o r y superannuation was introduced in Australia in 1992, so many Australians currently rely on a combination of superannuation and the pension. Ms Noake added, “To be told that my future pension will decrease because of a change in the assets test feels very unfair; it’s like the rules are being changed halfway through the game, but it’s too late for me to do anything about it.” If you need more information about your pension, contact Centrelink on 13 23 00.

Locals Nominated for Port Stephens Community Awards By Heather SHARP
TWO Medowie locals have been nominated to receive an award in the annual Port Stephens Council Community Awards to be announced and presented on Australia Day, January 26, 2017. Mr Tony Gillespie has been nominated for Port Stephens Sportsperson of the Year, which recognises outstanding individual sporting achievements and contributions to the wider sporting community. Mr Gillespie, a Taekwondo Chief Instructor, told Medowie News Of The Area, “As a leader it is my responsibility to lead from the front.” “So I do my absolute best for my team and my family of martial artists.” Mr Gillespie who also runs Imugi Fit and was nominated by members of the fitness, support, and motivation group based in Medowie says, “Improved self-esteem and confidence in everyday
life, the ability for them to function in life better is what’s most important to me.” The Port Stephens Council established the awards to provide an opportunity to formally recognise the efforts and achievements of residents. Young Citizen of the Year nominee Miss Carissa Maher was nominated for the award for her academic and community achievements while studying for the HSC and at the same living with the debilitating chronic illness Crohns Disease. Miss Maher told Medowie News Of The Area, “This past year has been one of the most rewarding and successful times of my life and I am grateful that I was able to experience everything I have.” “It has really given me the chance, with the help of mentors, teachers, and family members, to use the skills that I have learned
to help more people than I could ever imagine.” “It is important to me to not only achieve my own goals but to give to my local community and where possible be a voice to the youth of today and for women.” Miss Maher has achieved so much, including first in all her HSC subjects, Medowie Christian School Dux, receiving the ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award, and participating as a Regional Minister in the prestigious YMCA’s Youth Parliament. There are five award categories including: Freeman of Port Stephens, Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Port Stephens Medal, and Sportsperson of the Year. Medowie News Of The Area wishes all nominees the best of luck for the Community Awards.
