Santa For A Day In Run For a Cause By Heather SHARP IT would need to be a good cause to get hundreds of men, women and children to run through the streets on a hot, cusp-of-summer, morning. And, a good cause it is. Organised by Variety: The Children’s Charity, The Newcastle Variety Santa Fun Run is a 5km course that starts and finishes at Honeysuckle Hotel, Newcastle Foreshore. Local Medowie resident Craig Howland joined the sled load of Santa Clauses on Sunday 27 November, participating in the increasingly popular annual Santa Fun Run.
Mr Howland told Medowie News Of The Area, “This is my first Santa run, before that the only time I dressed up in a Santa suit was for my family Christmas party last year.” When asked why he would don a red suit in the blazing sun, Mr Howland said, “The reason why I am running in this Santa Fun Run is that some kids, through no fault of their own, have had a tough start to their life and this fun run with the help of Variety and the generous sponsors will make their lives and the lives of their families a little bit easier.” Professor John Fischetti from the University of Newcastle also participated in the event, telling Medowie

“With the DA received, a long term lease and the funding locked in, the work of the steering committee is almost complete,” President Rod Kerr told News Of The Area. “The steering committee said at the start that it’s a community facility and they will run it when it becomes a reality.” “But we have one last job, and that is to appoint the very first Chairman and then his or her board of directors to take the facility into its next phase,” Rod Kerr said. The Club is now calling for expressions of interest from local residents to fill one of those roles. Interested people
A Very Special Mailbox By Santa CLAUS

I have asked the lovely ladies at Century 21 to look after my mailbox until Christmas, and I am hoping to hear from all the children in town before Christmas Eve. I am looking forward to replying to all your letters. Don’t forget to leave your address on your letter so I can reply quickly! I have given the girls at Century 21 some Reindeer food for you take a package of when you drop your
may email the club at medowiesporties@hotmail. com to get an information package. Submissions close on 31 December, with appointments to be made soon after. Board positions for the Bowls club will also be opened in early 2017. Port Stephens Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “I acknowledge the hard work of this steering committee and those committees before this one.” “People don’t know the effort that this committee has put in, they deserve a lot of praise.” “They should be proud to have brought important infrastructure into Medowie,” he said.
letter in the mailbox. Make sure you remember to leave your reindeer food out for Rudolph and his team on Christmas Eve. They get very hungry on our long journey. Now, there is also a very special present sack that I have left in the office, and I would be so delighted if you would like to ask Mum and Dad to buy something to leave in the bag when you come to visit my Mailbox. You see, the girls at Century 21 are collecting presents for a very special place called Bear Cottage. Lots of children who are not well have to stay in hospital over Christmas, and Bear Cottage looks after them and their siblings and families to make sure they feel loved. There is no need to wrap these presents, my elves will do that! A small, new, in package present from your favourite shop would be wonderful! I hope to see all your letters arriving soon boys and girls, and I hope you are being

THE Christmas festivities kicked off early at Medowie Christian School this year, with some hard working parents hosting their inaugural Christmas Pop Up Market. The school is currently fundraising for a new playground, and some dedicated parents saw this market as the perfect fundraiser to help them on their way. WIth only two and a bit weeks to plan the event, they had their work cut out for them, but managed to pull off a successful day. One of the organisers,
Covering the region across the Port. Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Karuah to Bulahdelah, and Stroud. Great Lakes LGA.
Julie Walter, told News Of The Area, “We’re really pleased with how it went, it was a wonderfully successful event!” “We were given the task of raising funds for a new playground at Medowie Christian School and while we were thinking of ideas we realised how many people we knew that had small businesses in Medowie.” The team of helpers put the word out and brought together a collection of talented businesses to form their very first Christmas Pop Up Market. There were party plan consultants, hand made cosmetics, bags, jewellery, face painters, a young girl and her first craft market, and many more.
“We thought that a market would be a great opportunity to showcase people’s products
and help us toward our fundraising goal,” Julie said. “As this was such a success
we’re looking to build on this and have it as an annual event.”
will do if a fire should start. To help residents make that decision, Medowie Rural Fire Brigade held a ‘Prepare - Act - Survive’ information evening last Wednesday. The key message from the information evening was to have a Bushfire Survival Plan in place and think about the risks of the area you live and/ or work in. Bush: If you live or work in an area that is close to or surrounded by bush, know that bush fires can be hot,
intense, and throw burning embers many kilometres. Grasslands: Where grasslands meet built up areas or homes, this presents a fire risk as grass fires can start easily and spread quickly. Coastal: For those who live or work along the coast near scrub, fires in coastal scrub can be hot and move fast. Paddocks: Fires can spread quickly over great distances on farms and paddocks. On A Hill: In what seems counter intuitive, fires travel
uphill faster than downhill or on flat ground. For every 10 degrees of slope, the fire can double in speed. A NSW Rural Fire Service spokesperson told Medowie News Of The Area, “Around 90 per cent of homes destroyed in a bush fire are lost because of burning embers.” “Embers can travel many kilometres from the fire, so even if you’re a few blocks back from the bush you may
be at risk.” If you have any questions or concerns, visit the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade at the Medowie markets each month or drop by the Station (cnr Ferodale and Medowie Rd) any Saturday from 8:3011am. To assess you bush fire risk, visit the RFS Bush Fire Household Risk Assessment Tool at assessmyrisk.rfs. nsw.gov.au

OFFICIALLY launched at the weekend, Medowie author Ms Yvonne Fletcher along with John Gillam, have penned a thought provoking picture book titled ‘The Tail of Two Diggers’. Wondrously illustrated by Mr Paul Durell, the book’s launch included a range of esteemed guests including Kate Washington (MP) and Vice Marshall (ret.) Treloar. Included in the Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017, this
Country to Canberra FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson today met and congratulated Philadelphia Coleman, of Salt Ash, who was at Parliament House as one of 12 winners in the Country to Canberra Leadership Competition. The winners, young rural women who submitted passionate videos and stories about why gender equality is important to them, have been treated to a two-day all-expenses-paid trip to Canberra to meet MPs and other influential women, and train in leadership, public speaking and team building. “I am delighted we have
a local amongst the winners. Philadelphia is clearly a driven young woman with a very bright future,” Ms Swanson said. “It was lovely to meet her and hear her speak on behalf of the group about their experiences in Canberra. She has made the most out of difficult circumstances. I admire her courage and determination, and look forward to supporting her endeavours in the future.” Philadelphia moved from Townsville to Salt Ash recently and attends Medowie Christian School. She said gender equality was important to her because of her experience with family
book sensitively approaches the issue of PTSD through the heroic dog, Digger, and his handler Sgt James Martin. Animals often resonate with children as they are familiar and usually a friendly way to approach difficult topics which the authors have successfully achieved in this book. In an exclusive pre-launch interview, Ms Fletcher told Medowie News Of The Area, “Digger (the dog) is an analogy of the modern day soldier.” Mr Gillam added, “What we are trying to do is bring the dark past into the present to create a brighter future.” “I saw the potential to present Digger as a story for children.” “Everyone sees something different in the story, from adults to children.” Tracking the real life story of Digger and Martin, this tells the history of two remarkable characters. Three granddaughters of James Martin, including Mrs Dianne Trenorden, Judith
Rowe, and Barbara Hoskin travelled from Adelaide to attend the launch. Mrs Judith Row spoke to Medowie News Of The Area, saying, “I have happy memories of him.” “He seemed to deal with his PTSD by regularly visiting a mate who was a patient at a hospital in Adelaide.” Substantial profits from books sales will go to RSL DefenceCare to fund Assistance Dogs. As a sign of their commitment to assisting
returned service personnel, the authors presented DefenceCare with three collars in an advance pledge of how many dogs the book’s sales will fund. Teachers are supported in their teaching of the book through a comprehensive set of teacher resources for Stages 2 and 3, aligned with the Australian curriculum and the Quality Teaching Framework. Local residents impacted by incessantly barking dogs will have to see whether or not Rangers can, or will, enforce the policy through issuing a noise abatement order as written in the draft policy. Fight for the Cure
By Rachael VAUGHAN
ANOTHER local business has come out with their hearts on their sleeves and organised a stellar event to raise funds to find a cure for Breast Cancer. The staff and clients at Medowie Plus Fitness 24/7 on Ferodale Road ran a fundraiser over the weekend at the ever-growing and expanding Medowie Sports Centre. The team ordered black Plus Fitness singlets to be emblazoned with the slogan ‘Fight for the Cure’ and sold them to patrons prior to the event, with all proceeds going to the charity. The morning of the event kicked off with a junior boot camp for the kids, run by the trainers. The children had a fantastic time, and it promoted an enjoyment of fun and fitness, promoting healthy lifestyles. A barbecue sausage sizzle

was cooked by staff, finished off with pink glazed donuts, donated by the wonderful Bakery team at Coles Medowie. Raffle tickets were sold in the lead up to the event, and on the day, with a wide variety of prizes donated by Medowie businesses. A Ferrari ride was also up for grabs, donated by a coowner of the gym. A Medowie mum won the prize, but graciously donated it to 14-year-old car enthusiast, Blake Kelly, who had the time of his life. Gym Manager Adelaide Brady told News Of The Area, “We raised around $1,400 and we’re really proud of the effort everyone put in to make this such a fantastic fundraiser.” Well done to Medowie Plus Fitness for hosting such a successful, charitable event and raising much needed funds for this worthwhile cause.
