Residents want to Dam talk
q Janine Moore, Brian Muntz, Corentine Le Saint and Richard Byrnes met up to chat about the recreational usage of Grahamstown Dam.
By Rachael VAUGHAN A SIMPLE message on social media by Medowie resident Corentine Le Saint, asking for information on using Grahamstown dam for a family kayak outing has sparked great interest, discussion, debate and the sharing of memories growing up in Medowie when the dam was a far more utilised recreational asset. Long-time Medowie resident Andrew Gill recalled some fond memories of the dam with News Of The Area, “Having spent my whole life in Medowie, some of my best memories and experiences come from The Dam.” “I learnt to windsurf, sail and kiteboard on its beautiful open waters, and during my high school years, we would
ride from Medowie after school, throw a line in and then paddled boards around with some of friends who rode over from Lakeside.” “More often than not I would pull my line in with a two kilogram catfish on the hook which would sit in the basket on the front of my bike while I rode home with my rod over my shoulder,” he said. Richard Byrnes, secretary of Sailability Port Stephens who have current limited recreational use of the dam, told News Of The Area, “We encourage members of the public to come and use the Dam during our open hour on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, within the guidelines we are permitted to use the Dam.” “I personally would love to

$400 collected which has been handed to the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade in the form of Coles vouchers. “We really can’t thank the staff at Coles enough for putting this on,” Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Senior Deputy Captain Peter Smith told News Of The Area. “They put it out there, and the general public supported it wholeheartedly.” “So, without their generous idea this wouldn’t have happened.” Manager of Coles Medowie, David Fulton, explained to News of the Area, “We put signs up, we put it to the public, the public responded,
which was great and we put the collected funds into gift cards for the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade to use when they need to use them, on the things they need.” A half pallet of drinking water is also being donated by Coles Medowie along with the gift cards. Despite the busy period of recent months, the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade is ready to answer the call all year round, not just in the sweltering heat of summer. “Our year runs from May to May,” Deputy Captain Ian Harding told News of the Area. “The brigade gets called out to roughly

Spare change for the Firies IT has been a busy fire season so far, and with the weather continuing to be very hot with little rain, the Medowie community will continue to rely on the local Rural Fire Brigade. As such, the staff at Coles Medowie took it upon themselves to do what they could to help our firies get through the very busy summer months and thank them for all their efforts. By putting together their own donations, the staff also put it to the public to do what they could and donate their spare change at the registers. The end result was

see more people use the Dam in the ways we are currently allowed to, for example, starting a kayak social group.” “The key to this happening is of course more volunteers so that we can be open more often,” he said. Brian Muntz, who served some years ago as an honorary ranger, selected by Council, echoed this statement. “I think the big thing here is that more needs to be known about the current access to the Dam for Medowie and Raymond Terrace residents, and I would love to see this shared a lot more than it has
been in recent years,” Brian told News Of The Area. “The access is there in part for what people are asking for, and things can only expand when there is available man power to do so through endeavours like the sailing club and sailability,” he added. Hunter Water was approached for their thoughts on the increase of recreation usage on the Dam, in regards to any effects such a proposal would have on the drinking water catchment. A spokesperson from Hunter Water told News Of The Area, “As per Hunter Water regulation,
250-300 jobs a year, and we’ve responded to 175 jobs already and there is still a third of the year left to go.” “It’s important to also mentioned that we don’t just attend fires, we attend all emergency call outs,” Ian said. “As we are always on call, we will always be thankful for donations from the public to help us,” Gavin Smith told News of the Area. “Things such as water and soft drinks, lollies, fresh fruit and non-perishable goods are always welcome, so the Coles Vouchers will definitely come in handy to fill the gaps.”

Of The Area, “I just thought she would forget about it and that would be the end of it.” “But she is determined to do it, so after 18 months of growing her hair and asking me ‘Is it long enough yet?’, the time has come.” When Olivia is asked why she wants to donate her long hair, her answer is simple, and beautiful. She says, “I want every girl to be able to have hair like me and feel pretty.” Olivia’s goal is to raise $750, and she has so far hit $200 of that target. The charity group that Olivia will make her donation to is ‘Variety the Children’s Charity’. They have stated that wigs can cost families up to $6,000. These wigs generally
only last one to two years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth. Donating to this foundation with Olivia can help to provide more wigs, and other vital equipment to a child in need. You can donate at Olivia’s fundraising page by following this link: https:// hairwithheart. everydayhero.com/au/ olivia-s-hair-donation Olivia hopes to have hit her fundraising goal by the end of February, ready for her big, brave haircut. Well done Olivia for having the desire to do something so very special for Children in need.

acknowledged for their ongoing contribution to the community and presented with a certificate and pen. This year, former Councillors Sally Dover and Geoff Dingle were awarded the prestigious title of Freeman of Port Stephens for their extensive dedication to the community and over ten years’ service on Council. Freeman of Port Stephens is an honour given to individuals who have distinguished themselves with the highest order of community service. Geoff Dingle, one of the newest Freeman of Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “I unfortunately wasn’t available to attend on the day, so I look forward to receiving my certificate at an upcoming council meeting.” “Congratulations to all the winners, in particular Colleen for all the wonderful things she does within her community.” The Citizen of the Year award was taken out by Raymond Terrace businesswoman Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz, who has been a passionate advocate for the Raymond Terrace community for the past two decades. Colleen has been an active patron of the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework, which aims to create safe teaching and learning environments for local schools. Ten-year-old Mackenzie Bell was the deserving recipient of Young Citizen of the Year for her tireless fundraising efforts for multiple sclerosis. Mackenzie was just two years old when her mother Deanna was diagnosed with the condition, and Mackenzie raised a huge $1,860 by participating in the MS 24 hour Mega Swim at Sydney Olympic Pool. The remaining awards on the day were presented to a selection of Port Stephens residents from all walks of life.

Tech Savvy Seniors Classes By Marian SAMPSON
OLDER people often struggle with new technology. Some are left pondering things that others may take for granted, such as do you really need antivirus software, how safe is it to click a link on an email or to download a file to your system? How do you download an App and use it? There is now help at hand. Port Stephens Library in collaboration with Tech Savvy Seniors is offering
workshops at Tomaree Library at Salamander Bay and at Raymond Terrace library. The program is being delivered in a series of free classes which are supported by the State Library and Telstra. The sessions will be covering topics as diverse as social media, using a tablet or a smartphone, cyber safety and using the internet. Each class will run for approximately two hours and morning tea will also be provided to participants.
Mr Paul Whittemore, a library customer who has booked into all the courses told News Of The Area, “These courses at Tomaree Library are a wonderful opportunity for seniors in our society to keep up to date with new technologies. “We don’t want to be left behind when there are so some to know how to access social media,” he said. Spaces in each class are limited so members of the community are encouraged to contact their library to book their place at one or all of these classes.

Mr LA, Medowie Dear Mr LA,
This is just another example of a whole list of issues that fall under the category of ‘Ignorant Sod of a Neighbour’. He is probably just chilling out, listening to some lunatic on talk back radio or he’s singing along to the 80s hour, and he thinks he is on a freeway instead of a sleepy semirural road that shares a boundary with your freshly washed SUV, your glistening windows, and your sugar-soaped walls. You can try the diplomatic path and approach him. Just say, “Hey mate, I was just wondering if you had noticed the dust bowl you create when you drive 60km per hour down our shared driveway? You probably didn’t. I’d really appreciate it if you slowed down a bit.” That may not work. You may need to get a bit passive aggressive. “Hey, buddy, the whole concept of neighbours revolves around being neighbourly. I considerately deliver your mail when it gets placed in the wrong letter box, and I considerately dodge your dog when it sits in the middle of my driveway. All you need to do is follow my lead and slow down. Thanks.” If he’s as dumb as a hammer, you probably need to implement some road blocks. Maybe make a speed hump so he gets airborne. Some solar-powered fake cop lights? That should clarify your message. Or erect a sign that says, ‘Drive like your kids live here’ or maybe ‘Slow down, adults at play’. That should really freak him out. I hope these suggestions work, Mr LA. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Fish Run Riot
By Geoff WALKER
PEOPLE love fishing reports. That’s why we regularly cruise by the fish cleaning table at Lemon Tree Passage in Henderson Park with the hope of getting a story. It’s not easy winkling the good oil out of fisher folk as some of them jealously guard their ‘secret spots’. Some even refuse to tell us the bait they use. Others give out false leads to keep wannabes away from their hot spots. Not so local legend Adam
Parbera who has been scoring big time with both fish and crabs. While collecting yellowtail bait (yakkas) in the white water around Tomaree Headland the kingfish came on and he and his two mates had their 15 fish quota in record time. They weighed in at up to 8kg each. The intrepid trio returned at night to the same spot to clean up big time on the snapper. These were running riot and Adam’s largest topped
the scales at 9kg. That’s not all. He reefed in a thumping 32kg jew from a hole near North Arm Cove. Why waste the fish frames? Most anglers feed them to the pelicans but Adam recycled some through his crab pots and nailed some monster muddies at Karuah. So, dear reader, there you have it! Why hide in your air-con cave this summer watching the cricket and guzzling endless cans? Set the alarm clock for 3am. Hit the water and before you know it you’ll be back home with a boat load. If Adam can do it, so can you!
IGA Store Closes By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Nelson Bay community have lost another small business, this time it is the IGA at the Austral Street Shopping Village closing its doors for the very last time. They are using the publicity surrounding their closure to share a very important message. There have been rumours afloat that the remaining stores within the village are not longer trading, but this could not be further from the truth. Store manager of the now closed Nelson Bay IGA, Michelle Dand, told News Of The Area, “There are some wonderful businesses still here, run by locals just like you and I, and we’d love everyone to still remember to come and support them.” “Small businesses rely on the support of community, so don’t forget these great businesses are still here.” The Austral Street
Shopping Village still has the Seabreeze Bakery, Real Estate Friend. Hairdresser and Sri Malaysia Restaurant. “You can’t beat the small shopping centre service, it was our service that set us apart from the big chains,” Michelle said. “For many of our regulars, that was the biggest reason why they kept coming back.” “That familiarity with the staff meant that when they came in to do their grocery shopping, it wasn’t as much of a chore because they were dealing with friends, and this added a personal touch which many really people appreciated.” Neighbouring businesses at the Austral Street Shopping Village are disappointed to see the much loved IGA store leave, but hope that locals and regulars still continue to give them their support. Jade Ong, owner of Sri Malaysian Restaurant, told News of the Area, “The sign out the front isn’t lit up at night, but don’t forget we’re definitely still here!”
“We’re not going anywhere, and we’d love to see all our regulars and lots of new faces in to visit us.” Rochelle from the Seabreeze Bakery told News of the Area, “We hope our regulars still drop in, not only for our service, but our high quality products.” Jacquie, the Shopping Village’s resident hairdresser, told News of the Area, “Small businesses rely on community support, and we hope to see all our regular clients still following our business, and making appointments as usual.” With the closure, Michelle Dand herself has not only had to say goodbye to her regular customers, but to the Nelson Bay area as well for her working day. She will now be working at Lovey’s IGA at Hawks Nest. “If anyone is in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area, please come in and say hello,” Michelle told News Of The Area. “It would be great to see some familiar faces now and then, so don’t be a stranger.”

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au q Jackson Fuller, Michael Moffat and Divan Bezuidenhout, three of Medowie’s players who attended the National Rugby Camp in Armidale.
National Rugby Camp Champs Please support the advertisers within the Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week.
By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Medowie Rugby Club has really come along in leaps and bounds over the last few years, and with the help of local sponsors, this development looks to be continuing on for many years to come. With the sponsorship provided by local real estate agent LJ Hooker Medowie, the Medowie Marauders have been able to send six talented junior players to Armidale’s National Rugby Camp to be able to learn from some of the best in the game in this country. The camp is attended by some of the top rugby coaches in Australia, current NSW Waratah players, and also current Australian Wallabies players. “You can really see the difference in the players after they attend the National Rugby Camp,” Medowie Rugby Club President Dwayne Murphy told News of the Area. “The confidence that they take out of the camp is the main thing, but they also bring back a lot of knowledge of the game that they pass on to their teammates.” “Only a few may actually attend the camp, but the benefits reach wider than just those players,” he said. The Medowie Rugby Club will have both junior and senior grades playing in the upcoming 2018 season and welcome new players for all teams.
