Trauma Teddies By Rachael VAUGHAN
CHILDREN on the Tilligerry Peninsula who receive assistance during an emergency, may just receive a special friend to help them through a difficult situation. Operation Teddy Bear began in Victoria 30 years ago, and has recently spread to other states. It offers comfort to a child whose family has been made homeless, a child involved in a road accident, or a child affected by domestic violence or sexual assault.

Club president Kay Elson told News Of The Area, “During my year as President of Tilligerry Lions, I wanted to do projects which benefited women and children, so felt this project was very worthwhile. “This year, to fundraise for the bears, Tilligerry Lions have various fundraising activities throughout the year, but our bi-monthly BBQs at Tanilba Bay raise funds all the year round.” “This year our very special bears were purchase through Lions in Victoria,
and they are so soft and cuddly,” she said. The first batch of these special bars went to the Lemon Tree Passage police, and then they gave a batch to our local paramedics at Tanilba Bay. There are lots of exciting things on the horizon for Raymond Terrace Lions Club. On 24 March, The Raymond Terrace Lions are holding a Pink Afternoon Tea at Club Lemon Tree to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation, which employs breast care nurses who give much needed support to

Defence family group for support and fun
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Williamtown Defence Family Group Inc (WDFG) is a small not for profit organisation operated by a volunteer management committee. They undertake projects that support Defence members and their families to connect and integrate into the Williamtown community. They aim to create positive opportunities for the Defence community to establish friendships, share local knowledge and show support for our past and present serving members. Their current projects include; a weekly craft group, teaching members how to make tribute poppies, making handmade Christmas cards for deployed members, posting care packages to deployed members, making welcome bags for new families and giving them out at the annual Welcome Expo and a toy library. They operate out of the RAAF Williamtown Family Room located on base next to the pool. News Of The Area met with the volunteer group at Medowie’s Bull n Bush hotel during the week to discuss their current projects. Some projects are for defence families only, others are open to the public. This week’s event was a clothing swap, held in the front meeting room of the Bull n Bush. This week’s Clothing Swap was an opportunity for people to meet new friends, enjoy some nibbles and upcycle some pre-loved fashion treasures. All funds raised by the events go back into creating
more projects and events that support the Williamtown Defence community.” Vice-president of the group, Krystal Rowell, told News Of The Area, “Our next major event is the Williamtown Defence Family Group Easter Celebration held at Fighterworld on Sunday 25 March from 1-3pm.” “For this event we are selling tickets at Defence Bank
and Australian Military Bank.” “We will have amusements, live music, raffles, medieval reenactors, free hot cross buns, barista coffee and Easter eggs.” The ladies would love to see some new faces come along and join in their activities. You can contact them with any enquiries on: wlm. dfgroup@gmail.com or www. facebook.com/groups/ WilliamtownDFG

Dear Jasminda,
Lions Youth of the Year
By Heather SHARP
THREE of the area’s best young people were contestants in the Zone finals for Lions Youth of the Year last Saturday. Hosted by the Raymond Terrace Lions Club, the contestants were put through a rigorous day of being interviewed by a panel of three judges, giving two impromptu speeches, and one prepared speech to a public audience. Each of the three local high school students participated to a high level. The contestants included: Jaydon Maidstone (Hunter River High), Alyssa McDonald (Hunter River High), and Jordan Tumes (Medowie Christian School). Youth Chair of the Raymond Terrace Lions Club and organiser of the event, Mrs Glenys Francis, told News Of The Area, “It is with a sense of
pride that we support our local young people to progress to community leaders.” “This competition has been running for 28 years in Australia and the Raymond Terrace Lions Club have participated since its inception.” “The winners from Raymond Terrace, Tea Gardens and Medowie Clubs competed in the Zone final on Saturday.” “It is a terrific opportunity for young people to showcase their personality, community leadership, and represent their community.” “We have always been proud of our young representatives and will do anything we can to support them.” “Each of the clubs will be sponsoring their contestants to attend a Youth Camp in April where they will meet other young achievers form all over the District.”
Two contestants, Alyssa and Jordan were selected to go on to the Regional finals to be held in Clarencetown. Topics contestants spoke about ranged from personal experiences of growing up as a teenager in the new millennium to role models that inspire them to the meaning of black holes in space. The audience were equally entertained, educated, and enthralled by the talents and community spirit of young people in the local community. The Lions Youth of the Year competition is open to young people aged 15-19. Contestants are nominated through local Lions Clubs and focuses on developing in young people: leadership, personal improvement, sportsmanship, citizenship, community involvement, and public speaking experiences.

From time to time I have to speak in public. It fills me with fear. How can I get over this? Mrs LQ, Raymond Terrace
Dear Mrs LQ,
Oh, I hear you. There you are, standing in a public place, an audience in front of you, your heart pounding, your hands shaking, your face blushing. There are no doubt times when those symptoms could be desired – meeting a new partner, for instance. When it comes to speaking in front of a crowd, however, these are not desirable feelings, because they could be followed by an inability to speak, and then an inability to run from the stage and bury your head in the nearest potted palm because you are dying from humiliation. Instead, you stand there and continue ranting, knowing that the audience is not listening to your words, because they are too busy watching you tremble. The positive in all this is that the audience is not there to throw bananas at you, or laugh at your flaws, or scoff at your words, or judge your private life (unless you are Barnaby Joyce over the past few weeks). No, they are there because they want to hear what you have to say. There are some ways to calm down, which may be useful. Some people swear by the technique of imagining the audience members with no clothes on. I feel that this could only make you more nervous, so don’t try that one. Focusing on a friend in the audience is always a useful tactic. Ask a friend to sit near the front, so you can do this. Drinking beforehand is not a good idea. It may calm your nerves, but it may also slur your words. Deep breathing can assist, as long as you don’t go too far and hyperventilate. Rehearsing your speech in front of a small audience can also help to alleviate your anxiety, but the family dog won’t cut it. Best of luck, Mrs LQ. Given public speaking is often listed as the number one fear, take some solace from the fact that you are certainly not alone. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Footy stars visit Salt Ash Public School
THIS week Salt Ash Public School were lucky enough to have two players from the Newcastle Knights visit and talk to the students about health and wellbeing. Jack Johns and Kalyn Ponga, along with representatives from the Mallabula Rugby League Club, talked with the students about the significance of keeping both the mind and body healthy. Kalyn Ponga is the Newcastle Knights’ big name recruit from the North Queensland Cowboys. The young, but very talented Ponga, will be playing fullback in the Knights’ rejuvenated backline this season. Jack Johns, having represented Italy in last year’s Rugby League World Cup, will be learning his trade in the lower grades in the hope of one day emulating the feats of his famous father and Uncle, Matty and Andrew Johns. During their presentation, they promoted the values of keeping active and healthy and being a role model to others. Jack and Kalyn discussed the importance of having strong values, in particular being respectful in every situation they are in, in and outside of school. Principal of Salt Ash Public School, Holly Deguara, told News Of The Area, “They told our students that if they are not respectful on or off the field then they may not play.” “At Salt Ash Public School, our PBL values are Positive, Respectful and Safe Learners, so ur students could really see the link between our school values and how they are applied in everyday life, even on the sporting fields.” “The NRL players even incorporated how our Keys to Success (Organisation, Persistence, Confidence, Resilience and Getting Along) are important even outside of school,” she said. The players stayed around after their presentation to sign autographs for the students. The students really enjoyed having the players visit Salt Ash Public School and got a lot out of their role models demonstrating the importance of health and wellbeing.

Junior and Luana
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THERE is nothing better on a balmy Saturday evening than sitting down with a cold drink, good food, great company and stellar entertainment. Soldiers Point Bowling Club has a fine night planned with husband and wife acoustic duo ‘Junior and Luana’ booked to take the stage at 7pm on Saturday 3 March. Junior and Luana share a special chemistry in their music. Luana has been singing
for over 20 years & Junior has been mastering his skills & amazing talent on the guitar for over 25 years. Covering a range of styles such as Blues, Soul, R’n’B and Rock, they are guaranteed to entertain every listening ear. They share unique harmonies and acoustic arrangements of songs from the great classics to the modern dance floor fillers. With awesome vocals & guitar skills, Junior and Luana draw experience from their Grass Roots of the Islands. Whether you’re looking for

News Of The Area
By Geoff WALKER
HEAVY weather played havoc with the fleet of catamarans at the annual ‘Big Boat Regatta’ hosted by Tanilba Sailing Club on the weekend of 17th and 18th February. Sailing secretary Mike Colecliffe explains, “Sunday was particularly challenging for competitors.” “Our rescue craft worked overtime as 11 of the 19 craft retired from the first race and 14 failed to finish the second,” he said. “With a wind shift from the Nor’ East to a full-on Easterly of 20 knots, it really sorted the sailors out. One craft actually cartwheeled.” Results: Division 2: 1st and 1st overall: Zac Breaden (Tanilba); 2nd and 2nd overall: David Cullip & Ethan Mc Calof (Speers Pt.); 3rd Sam Breaden (Tanilba). Division 1: 1st and 3rd overall: Chris & Richard Brewin (Kurnell); 2nd Murray Makin and daughter; (Kurnell). 3rd David Morgan & Cameron Kaul (Queen’s Lake). Mr Colecliffe said, “Without local sponsorship, we could not stage the various championships and regattas that we host each year. In particular, I’d like to thank Coastal Real Estate and Club Lemon Tree who both made $500 donations recently.”
q ‘Indigo’ from Wallerawang in choppy water and division 2 place getters David Cullip and Zac Breaden.
