WITH Father’s Day taking place next weekend, what better time to showcase all the wonderful different relationships Dads can play in our families. We have fathers, step fathers, foster and adoptive fathers, and within those roles we have brand new dads, dads to be, and in Medowie, those very special deployed and serving Dads. One unique and allencompassing Medowie family manages to tick a lot of those role boxes in one go! They are the true essence of a blended family. This family story began with a young Kyra and Mitchell, who met in high school. Kyra and Mitchell had Lexi

(10) and twins Lucy and Lyla (6). When they separated, Mitchell met Carrie who already had children; Tristan (17), Brianna (16), Jackson (14) and Avril (13). Kyra met Jake, who already had Kaidyn (14) and Gracie (11), and together they added Avah (4). Now, to round off the blended family, let’s introduce Harrison - Kyra’s partner. Harrison plays an important role in the family, bringing no extra children to the mix, yet choosing to love a whole collection of children as his own. News Of The Area met CONTINUED Page 2

loves my kids as much as I do? If I disrespected him he would start to resent my kids for it and they would suffer.” Jake lamented on the transition to being a parent in a blended family, “I think if you put the fact that kids love everyone the same and just want mum and dad happy, it is easier.”
“If you have someone like Mitchell and Harry around you at least know they will love and protect the kids the same way you would Father’s Day is a good day to give recognition to all the dads that are man enough to play a Dad role to someone else’s baby,” Jake said. Harrison discussed
his feelings with News Of The Area on his role in the family “To me, being part of a blended family is all about the kids The responsible adults/ parental figures need to be able to get along, to be able to provide the kids with an environment that they can thrive in.”

Kids thrive on book week By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Children’s Book Council of Australia every year brings children and books together by encouraging Schools, Libraries, booksellers, Authors and Illustrators to celebrate Book Week. Medowiejoinedinthe celebrations and all schools took part in this year’s festivities hosting book parades through the week. Thisyear’sthemeforbook week was ‘Australia! Church group working hard in the community By Rachael VAUGHAN
“WHO cares? God does. And so do we.” Chances are if you are a local to Medowie, this sentence will sound familiar – and most will be able to pick where from. The Medowie Assembly of God Church (AOG) has had their prominent sign on the road in to Medowie, delivering this important message, for twenty years. It’s due for an update soon, and News Of The Area thought this would also be an appropriate time to spotlight some of the wonderful things this church group is doing for our community. Medowie AOG church runs services from the Medowie Community Centre, but runs welfare programs in Medowie - some that you may have heard of and frequented, and others you may not have. Senior Pastor, Adam Cook, told News Of The Area, “Our welfare programs, which include Opportunity knocks Medowie, and Foodway are Church based charities we run.”
“It is part of the calling God has placed on our church, to show the practical love of Jesus Christ. In this, we are showing the community of Medowie that God still cares, and so do we,” he said. The Opportunity Knocks store offers reasonably priced clothing, shoes and bric-a-brac to all members of the community and is open Monday to Friday 9:30am3pm and Saturdays 9-12noon. The Foodway program at 60 Silverwattle Drive is a wonderful service to Medowie, offering concession card holders and families in need fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, groceries and care items. They are open Wednesday and Thursday 9:30-2pm. They also offer a hot lunch at Foodway to those in need, from 11-1 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which can be obtained simply by knocking on the rear door of the house – where the meals are cooked and handed out by volunteers from the community. Adam Cook told News of The Area that they heavily rely on the donations they receive
from the community, and the work of the volunteers. “We could not do what we do without our volunteers, with over 40 working with us, said Mr Cook. “They not only do what we do, they have become part of what we do and every one of them plays an integral part – they are the best volunteers around!,” he said. Some notable businesses and churches that have banded together and quietly support these programs include; Coles, Woolworths, Medowie Meats, Dowling Real Estate Medowie, Medowie Chinese Restaurant and Medowie Car Care, Overflow Church Medowie and St.Francis Anglican Church Medowie. Many other businesses have also helped the Medowie AOG over their years in the community. “These businesses have been part of something much bigger than they know, as we feed and clothe over 1500 families from the Port Stephens and greater council areas,” Adam Cook told News Of The Area.

End of the run for greyhound owners THE local greyhound racing community has been left devastated after the bill to ban the sport in New South Wales was passed in Parliament last week. Following a marathon debate stretching into the early hours of the morning, the Greyhound Racing Prohibition Bill 2016 was passed 49 votes to 30. Local greyhound owner Debbie Robinson said many people will be financially ruined by the ban. “There is a lot of bitterness within the greyhound community, they are angry that this is being taken away from them and many people’s livelihood are now gone,” Ms Robinson
said. “The passing of the ban will not just stop racing itself, it will also result in the destruction of the social aspect of it and for most people in the Industry, this is their entire lives.” Ms Robinson said Greyhound Racing NSW had been working towards reforms before NSW Premier Mike Baird made the shock announcement to ban the sport last month. “As part of the reforms package they came and
inspected everything, the dog’s’ health, all the paperwork, all checks were done,” she said. “Most greyhounds are treated well, and the only mistreated ones are those owned by the few who disregard the law. Why couldn’t a threeyear improvement plan be organised instead of an outright ban?” Port Stephens MP Kate Washington voiced her opposition to the Bill during the 12 hour Parliamentary
q
debate and thanked the many people who took the time to share their views with her. Ms Washington acknowledged that the “hardworking and decent people of the greyhound industry have every right to be angry and hurt, particularly those in rural and regional communities.” “The only recognition in this bill of the pain that will be inflicted on people is one line which states that no compensation is payable.

It is one thing for the Government to shut down an entire industry, but it reaches a new level of wrong when significant losses will be incurred and the Government has made no provision whatsoever to support them,” Ms Washington said in Parliament. “This is no way to treat the hard working caring people that I have met. It is no way to treat the majority of people in the industry who have never done anything wrong.

Corporal home for Father’s Day
By Daniel SAHYOUN
FATHER’S Day will be special this year for Corporal Sean Sullivan as he will be spending the day at home with his wife Ren and four daughters. Sean has served in the RAAF as an Avionics Technician for 11 years and has missed many special family occasions, including Father’s Day last year due to deployment. Sean told News Of The Area, in any given year he can be away from home for up to six months. “It’s very difficult because you miss out on so much time with your family,” he said. “I’ve missed two Christmases and everyone’s birthday at least once during the time I’ve been away.” Sean said when he is serving on a long mission, his thoughts are constantly of his family and he counts down the days until he can return home and see them. Daughter’s Mindy, Polly,
Annie and Josie keep in constant contact with their father through phone calls, social media and emails. Thirteen-year old Annie said her father “is definitely one of a kind because he’s so caring.” “He’s always there for me even when he is away,” Annie said. “I can give him a call at any time and he will help me with anything I need including my homework.” Eleven-year old Polly told News Of The Area her father’s sense of humour is one of the many qualities she admires. “His ‘Dad’ jokes are really bad but they make me laugh so much,” Polly said. “Dad thinks they are really funny though, and he always laughs too.” For six-year old Mindy, it’s the simple things she misses the most when her father is away. “I love kicking the football in the backyard and jumping on the trampoline with Dad,” Mindy said.
SHOOTERS Fishers and Farmers Party MLC Robert Borsak condemned Premier Mike Baird and his National Party Deputy Troy Grant for their ban on greyhound racing that passed the New South Wales Parliament last week. “This ban engineered by Mike Baird and Troy Grant has given The Greens the ammunition they need to start a national campaign against greyhound racing which they are launching with controversial Senator Lee Rhiannon today in Canberra,” Mr Borsak said. “I’m sure that Baird’s ban is part of a pay-off for The Greens’ support of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s ill-considered Senate voting reforms,” he said.
“Since the Nationals and Liberals have chosen to side with The Greens and alienate their conservative base and rural areas, the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party will be fighting the ban in New South Wales. We won’t stop!” News Of The Area is running on online Poll on this issue. To see the current ereults and to have your vote, please go to the News Of The Area website. www.newsofthearea.com.au Mr Borsak said that the ban is not a certainty until July 2 next year and he will work with any party of Government who works to reinstate the greyhound racing industry. “With Mike Baird and Troy Grant’s leadership now on the rocks after last night’s greyhound racing ban, and the

possibility that both may be rolled by their respective parties, there is still a chance for the Liberal and National Parties to atone for their actions and repeal the ban under a new leader.” “The Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party will work alongside anyone that is actively working to reinstate the greyhound racing industry after this unfair ban of an industry that was doing the right thing.”
Rural Fire will be door knocking
By Rachael VAUGHAN
q FAMILY: Sean Sullivan and his daughters Polly, Mindy and Annie are looking forward to Father’s Day. “But I miss him tucking me in at night and reading me a story when he’s away, Dad loves Dr Seuss books and so do I.” The girls are making sure Father’s Day will be very special with plans well
underway for a family day together. Breakfast in bed, a gift and a family picnic at the beach are all part of the special day planned. Sean said the best gift
of all was being home. “I’m definitely looking forward to Father’s Day this year, because I’ll be with my family,” he said.

Local Artists Given Opportunity to Shine
Tireless dedication from Arthur By Rachael VAUGHAN ONE would be hard pressed to find a person who has squeezed more out of life than Medowie resident, Pastor Arthur Magrath. Arthur has been a Medowie resident since he moved here to take up the position as Pastor of Medowie Christian Family church, an Assemblies of God Church, in July 1990. He remained the Pastor there until April 2015, seeing the Church through many wonderful changes, and their involvement and founding of many community based endeavours. The church initially held their meetings at Medowie
Public School, then Wirreanda Public School, before moving to the Medowie Community Centre, where it still resides, known as Medowie Assembly of God Church. Arthur is husband to his beloved Beryl, father to eight sons, grandfather to five, and great-grandfather to three. Pastor Arthur Magrath was named Port Stephens Citizen of the Year in 2013 for his wonderful contributions to our community. During his time as Pastor, Arthur opened the Opportunity Knocks shop in Medowie plaza, operated work for the dole programs all over the community, computer courses for seniors, became chaplain for the Fire

Brigade opened our very first soup kitchen in Medowie, which led to our Foodway program – featured in this edition of Medowie News Of The Area. Arthur has achieved so much for our community, and despite his retirement in 2015, does not appear to have slowed down much at all. He is well known and admired in the community, and always has time for a chat. He genuinely cares for the community and has worked his entire life to make a difference. Arthur told News Of The Area, “Please allow this 79 year old just one more liberty. My special thanks go to my family for their support and assistance, as do my thanks to Adam Cook and his wife Lisa who have taken over much of my work.” “I am gone from this work, but there is still much to be done – know when to run, when to rest, and when to stop and encourage others instead,” said Arthur. News Of The Area, after researching and learning all about his achievements in Medowie, wishes to thank Arthur for his tireless dedication to others. We are so truly blessed to have you as one of our own, Arthur.

Jule from Pet Portraits by Florence told News of The Area, “I decided to sponsor the junior section last year after entering for myself for the first time.” “I can’t wait to see the talent of our young ones on display and i’m hoping the local high schools will help encourage entries from all their art classes as well.” Last year Riley Bevan took out 2nd prize in the novas section with his cougar, as they did not have a junior section at the time. Di Stubbs, Gallery Manager of TAG (Tilligerry Art Gallery) said, “The Tilligerry Arts Craft and Quilting Show is jointly run by the Tilligerry Lions Club and Tilligerry Arts Group.” “It is part of the wider Tilligerry Festival which usually runs for a week and is just one of the many events held at that time.”

Letter to the Editor - medowie@newsofthearea.com.au
Feeback on the slow net Dear News Of The Area,
Regardsing News Of The Area storey “Internet congestion update’ edition 25 August 2016. TWO years ago my ADSL speed was around a half (0.5) Mbps. After many many calls to my ISP (over many years, with no improvement) I finally worked out that the question I needed to ask was "what is the dropout rate on my line?". As it turns out, my drop-out rate was massive and the primary cause
of my slow speed. So, after 3 x attempts (organised by my ISP) at getting Telstra technicians to check the line between my telecommunications box (outside my home) to the Medowie exchange ... and each time they found many line-faults (which they are obliged to fix) ... one technician fixed "something" (I don't know what) and my ADSL speed instantly jumped to 4Mbps. Happy days. Note: your ISP will get you to agree to pay a fixed fee if the line
faults are on the "inside" (from the T-box to your computer). Every time I agreed to that, the faults were "outside" so, for my situation (4kms from the Medowie Exchange), I never had to pay the fee as there were always external line faults that needed fixing. So if your "inside" line is OK, and there are line-faults causing dropouts, then it should be fixed without cost to you. You can check your distance from the Medowie Exchange by
going to: http://www.adsl2exchanges. com.au/viewexchange. php?Exchange=MDWI and putting in your phone number. The "heat map" will show what speeds others are getting in your area. The further for the Exchange, the slower the speed. Just now, my speed is around 2Mbps, so I called my ISP and there are zero drop-outs showing. So this secondary cause of slower speeds seems to be userload on the Medowie Exchange; ie. it always slows down when kids get home from school and start playing online games. Therefore an upgrade
of the Medowie Exhange is needed (in the same way our electricity substation was upgraded a few years ago to ensure integrity of supply) as the Medowie population continues to grow by 70% over then next two decades So, if your internet speed is slow, ring your ISP and ask for the drop out rate (zero, low or high; as they probably won't tell you an exact number) and use that status to initiate a fix of your line faults. Hope you get the same result I did. Scott Broadhead Medowie

Students from Medowie Public School performing at Wakakirri 2016.
Performance well noticed
Medowie Public School will find out at the end of August which schools have been chosen for state production and show awards. By Rachael VAUGHAN
ON Wednesday 24 August 2016, 35 Students from Medowie Public School participated in Wakakirri at Riverside Theatre Sydney. Each year, hundreds of schools across Australia create Story-Dances for Wakakirri that reflect student’s thoughts, ideas and aspirations. These stories are performed in professional theatres in front of the official ‘Wakakirri Panel’ who are searching for ‘Story of the Year’. Medowie Public School students had been rehearsing for 12 weeks with choreographer and dance teacher, Kiah Muddle from
q
iDance Performance Co, to create a unique and inspiring story. Kiah worked with the students to develop the story and choreography so that they played a vital role in telling the story. Together they decided on a story-dance titled “Through their eyes”. This story-dance takes you on a journey through time and conveys to you the student’s perception and beliefs of how social media has influenced society’s view of Aboriginal people. The students express to you their thoughts and ideas inspired by their own personal beliefs as 21st century learners.
The students of MPS presented this story with pride and had the audience captivated. The Judge Christopher Horsey said, “Medowie Public School have inspired me to get Aboriginal Dance into all schools…. you should be very proud of your story.” On the performance night the Medowie Public School competed against 4 other schools. After the performance 3 students were selected from each school to answer a question related to the performance. The students selected to do this from MPS were Lilly Gorham, Lilly Skinner and Amelia Chochrane.
Medowie Public School were fortunate and very honoured to take home the ‘Spirit of Wakkirri’ Award – one of only six awards for the evening across all schools. Medowie PS will find out at the end of August which schools have been chosen for state production and show awards. National awards are announced on Waka TV during September. Medowie Public School would like to thank the students for their hard work,
News Of The Area
dedication and commitment, and make special mention of our amazing parent helpers Nuraan Connolly, Lynda Skinner and Jemima Cochrane who helped with hair and makeup on the performance night. Mrs Vicki Winters, Medowie Public School Teacher and Wakakirri Coordinator, told News Of The Area, “I am extremely proud of our students and admire their enthusiasm and dedication to their performance and rehearsals.”
On the importance topics they raised during their chosen dance, Ms Winters said, “I believe our students will continue to bridge the gap in Aboriginal Education through dance and learning from each other.” Congratulations Medowie Public School on being fine representatives of your school and town. News Of The Area wishes you all the best as you wait for your State and National results.
