EXCITING new plans have been released following approval for the development of a brand new purpose-built health centre at Technology Place near the entrance of Newcastle Airport, Williamtown.

The new Central Health Alliance facility is a passion project for popular local GP Dr Paul Burford and will include seven doctor consulting rooms, three nurse stations, a procedure room for minor

operations, a pharmacy/ chemist, and cosy café for patients to enjoy and relax in while they wait.

The new facility will also feature a specialised allied health centre including physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry, pathology, dietician, occupational therapist and specialist consulting rooms.

Dr Burford said he and his team are looking forward to moving from their temporary building across to the permanent site:

By Rachael VAUGHAN CHILDREN in foster care are often placed within ‘kinship’ placements, where the child is placed with family.

The Grandparents As Carers support group (GAPS) was set up to offer support and friendship to some of these carers.

With the mass over crowding of the child protection system, it is so easy for their carers to slip through the cracks, and miss support that they need.

The GAPS group meets on Mondays during school terms at 10:30am at the Anglican church on Sturgeon Street, Raymond Terrace.

They have been running for nine years.

Group member Gavin Breen told News Of The Area, “We are here to help, because a

number of people out there who are involved in grandparent care are not aware of what is out there.”

“We can help with direction and support as you deal with the system and all that can involve.”

“The place for these kids is with caring family.”

“We love them, we care, and if the kinship placement is an appropriate safe place for a child, it can be the best thing,” he said.

The group has found wonderful comfort with each other, through difficult times, restorations and more.

The members spoke freely with News Of The Area about their concerns for the system, and that there needs to be a better process for these children.

The group would like all new carers to be given a pamphlet about

the GAPS group when they first gain custody of their grandchildren.

Many grandparent carers don’t even know the group exists.

Families who had grandchildren for years weren’t aware it existed, and reflect that they made huge improvements just on their knowledge base coming to the group.

Local member, Kate Washington, is a strong advocate for the group, and is looking to help the group this year with bringing about change and awareness, Claire Bell told News Of The Area, “We are a very welcoming group, we are there to support all kinship carers who are raising their grandchildren.”

The group will be running a stall at the Marketplace on Wednesday 2 November, out the front of Westpac.

Dogs back on track

LOCAL greyhound owners have welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to overturn the ban on Greyhound Racing and give the Industry one last chance.

Local greyhound breeder James Saunders said while everyone is relieved that racing will continue, the decision hasn’t taken away any of the anger felt during the past three months.

“It was extremely stressful, I’m a breeder predominantly and I couldn’t sell the dogs, couldn’t give them away and compensation wasn’t guaranteed,” he said.

“I had no money coming in, a mortgage to pay and dogs to feed, it was pretty cruel what they did to us.”

Premier Mike Baird admitted in Parliament last week that the decision to shut down the entire NSW Greyhound Racing Industry had been a mistake.

“I got it wrong, the Cabinet got it wrong, the Government got it wrong,” he said.

“The greyhound industry will be given a last chance, providing it meets the toughest animal welfare and

With the old ‘neighbourhood watch’ program long gone in Medowie, it is also a comforting thought that children, accompanied by an adult, will get to know their neighbours.

Susan Patten last year started a wonderful idea in Medowie, that we hope to see gain even more participants this year.

Susan purchased bags of balloons and left baskets at the major retailers in Medowie, then delivered a considerable amount of them

to homes nearby, with a note asking the owners to put the balloon on the mailbox if they intended to participate and would be okay with knocking.

This year, you will hopefully see the balloons around town again, and we encourage people to take one for their letterboxes.

Susan told News Of The Area, “It’s such a wonderful afternoon and evening if done safely and properly. The kids have a fantastic time.”

Medowie Mums facebook page will also be compiling a ‘Halloween Safe List’ for anyone to add their name/ address to if they desire.

Former Premier Morris Iemma will chair a Greyhound Industry Reform Panel that will determine the new regime.

The details of reforms are unclear at this stage but could include fewer races and capping the number of dogs bred to 2000.

Owner and trainer Mick Worth said while the local greyhound community is relieved the government have reversed the ban, they are proceeding with caution.

“The decision has been made due to political pressure and nothing else,” he said.

“Mr Baird was adamant that banning greyhound racing was the right thing to do and under no circumstances could the industry be reformed, but with his leadership now being questioned he’s prepared to backflip.”

Mr Worth said as Premier Mike Baird had completed so many backflips in the past week, he should consider taking up gymnastics.

Councillor Geoff Dingle, who has been a driving force behind attempts to sort out the issue was in attendance, along with the Medowie Progress Association’s members, and Medowie and Campvale residents.

“The consultative panel largely started because of the constant concern about this and hopefully it will lead to some action and some budgeting for funding for reducing risk

and trying to alleviate the localised flooding as well, and encouraging Port Stephens Council to work with Hunter Water to get a reasonable outcome,” Councillor Dingle said.

In what is proving to be a very complex issue, Hunter Water is currently engaged in consultancy regarding water issues and once this is complete will return to the Medowie Progress Association with an update.

As Councillor Dingle said, “The current

consultancy is based around assessing the current risk to the potential contamination of Grahamstown water supply from the Campvale drain and the options of diverting water from the Medowie floodplain to other areas including the Hunter River, Moffatts Swamp and or reconnecting to the original flow to Windeyer’s creek.”

“The impact of changing and improving the mixing of inflow into Grahamstown to improve dilution and reduce direct flow to the

Grahamstown pump station is also being investigated.”

Residents and business owners who are concerned about the impact this will have on their homes or livelihood are encouraged to attend scheduled meetings.

Medowie Progress Association’s next General Meeting is scheduled for Monday, 26 October, 7.30pm at the Community Hall, corner of Medowie and Ferodale Roads.

Garden Club hosts community plant sale

q

Plenty of plants on sale.

MEDOWIE Garden Club is having a plant sale on Saturday 22 October 2016.

It is being held at the Medowie Community Centre car park from 8.00 am until 1.00 pm.

It is an opportunity for people to get some plants at a very reasonable price.

All the plants are grown

by Club members and the funds raised are used to promote the activities of the Club.

It is also an opportunity for new residents in Medowie to meet members of the Garden Club, find out the preferable plants and flowers to grow in this area, and also to find out more about the Garden Club and maybe consider joining.

There will also be a BBQ offering sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls, tea and coffee for sale, to keep people sustained as they look at the plants for sale.

“Thank you to the wonderful team from the Lion’s Club of Medowie for helping us with our event: they catered for 100 people and made it look so easy,” she said.

Beach games also took place, including frisbee, soccer and a giant tug of war.

Local resident Rob Roseworne commented, “This is just what the community needed at this time - We’re sick of all the bad news so a day free of stress was excellent.”

This was one of the first family fun days planned by the community to help those affected by the contamination de-stress.

REGULAR Medowie News Of The Area contributor and University of Newcastle academic Heather Sharp, has returned from a Study Tour of France and Belgium leading a group of 40 students, two from Medowie.

Tracing the Remembrance

Trail, the battlefront of Australians serving in World War I, the group visited former battle sites, museums, memorials, and cemeteries.

Dr Sharp says, “This was an opportunity for University of Newcastle students to see how Australian history is

represented in an overseas location and they were able to see for themselves the important sites where Australians served during World War I.” “Given there is so much attention being paid to centenary commemorative

events, this was an ideal opportunity to see how this major international conflict is shown to the public and education groups in France and Belgium.”

All University of Newcastle students who have completed eight courses are eligible to apply for the Study Tour, and plans are currently underway for the 2017 Study Tour.

In addition to leading the Study Tour, Heather also spent four weeks in Germany at the Georg Eckert Institute researching History teaching and learning and presented at an international history educators’ conference in Spain.

The group travelled for two weeks, from Lille and Ypres to Amiens, and finally ending the Study Tour with a visit to Paris and the Versailles Palace, the location of the historic Versailles Treaty that officially ended World War I. Dr Sharp told News Of The Area that the Study Tour gave students the opportunity to research their own families and several grave sites were visited that students had identified as belonging to family members.

“Visiting the sites of family members was quite a moving experience for the students,” reports Dr Sharp.

Blood tests welcome CWA elects new bearers FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has welcomed news that voluntary blood testing of residents affected by the Williamtown RAAF base contamination scandal will finally get under way in November, and that a scientist has been appointed to head a long-term study.

“This news has been a long time coming, and while I have not been formally notified by Health or Defence, I was at the meeting of residents today that was told blood testing would start in November,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

“We also met Professor Martyn Kirk, from the National Centre for Epidemiological Population and Health, who will head the long-term study,” Ms Swanson said.

The news comes a day after Ms Swanson sat in on a Senate debate on the

Williamtown contamination, and was acknowledged by NSW Labor Senator Doug Cameron.

Ms Swanson had raised the issue in the House of Representatives during her First Speech on Monday, and in speaking on the Appropriations Bill in the Federation Chamber on Wednesday.

“I am pleased that Meryl is here to listen to this debate, because this is an issue that affects her community and an issue that she, along with the Labor Party, is extremely concerned about,” Senator Cameron told the Senate.

“As a union official, for years and years I had to deal with members of the metal workers union who were dying with mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos, after they were told it was OK,” Senator Cameron said.

“I stand beside the community in Williamtown,

as does the local member, Meryl Swanson, and as does the Labor Party. We want the government to do more. The [Defence] Minister Marise Payne has only been up there once since this happened. I do not think that is good enough.

I think the Minister should be in here telling us exactly what is happening and how this can be fast-tracked,” Senator Cameron said.

Ms Swanson said she was preparing questions to be asked of the Defence and Health Ministers during next week’s Senate Estimates.

“Blood tests, and this long-term study are good news. But the people in our community affected by this scandal still have a lot of questions unanswered,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

“The community is understandably anxious and angry - Some just want to leave,” she said.

“We both believe that stressing ourselves out with heaps of study isn’t a good or healthy thing, we have had breaks enjoying catch ups with our friends and only a few days ago enjoyed a walk up Tomaree headland which helped break the study cycle,” Kristen said.

Both girls credit their parents approach to their studying and HSC as being a great help to them.

“Yes they encourage us to study but have also told us, just do the best you can, if you don’t get the mark or ATAR you want or need then that’s ok, there are so many other options these days to pursue the career you want,” Kristen told News Of The Area.

Kristen has chosen a career as a Vet Nurse, and

has completed her Certificate 2 while being at school and will enrol in TAFE at Kurri to complete her Certificate IV. Danielle has applied at Newcastle University to start Primary School Teaching but said that if she doesn’t get the required ATAR that is okay, she is prepared to complete NewStart to accomplish her career goals.

Both girls have completed their English exams, with Science up next.

Danielle told News Of The Area, “We are as nervous as anything but we both are going to do the best we can, that’s all we can do.”

News Of The Area wishes Danielle, Kristen and all year 12 students the very best with their exams.

Twins sit for HSC

IRRAWANG High school twins, Danielle and Kristen, have begun their High School Certificate this week.

After thirteen years of schooling together, their final exams are here, and they prepare to head off into the big wide world.

Danielle and Kristen began their schooling at Medowie Public School, before continuing on to Irrawang High School, and remarked that they had some amazing teachers throughout their schooling.

Their friends who have sat the HSC before them have told them not to forget to take some time for fun during all the study.

“We have been able to take part in English and Maths Study workshops at school held during these school holidays which we found to be really helpful as well as emailing our

Wellbeing Program went well

THE Community Wellbeing Program’s Paddle Boarding Family Fun Day was a great success.

The program, created to help those families affected by the Williamtown Contamination Saga de-stress planned their first family fun day on 9 October.

Taking place at Shoal Bay Beach, the day was sponsored

by Shoal Bay Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) and the Medowie Lion’s Cub. Almost 100 people were in attendance, with the Medowie Lion’s having to cook up an extra 6kgs of sausages to feed hungry hoards.
