New park for kids is open By Rachael VAUGHAN

PACIFIC Dunes management last weekend hosted the official opening of their new park, on Lakewood Drive.

KURT Linde, General Manager of Golf Operations, and John Spencer, Development Manager of Pacific dunes, welcomed the crowd and officially opened the park. Pacific Dunes graciously provided a sausage sizzle, drinks and face painting for all who attended. The morning was enjoyed by a good group of families, despite the overcast and inclement weather. The new park boasts two separate age appropriate play grounds, several sets of swings of varying types, a flying fox and a generously sized grassed area, set up as a soccer field, complete with soccer goals at either end. The playground is well fenced, ensuring all play areas are protected from the road. A wonderful new facility for our community to enjoy.

Slow net speed By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE has been plagued by poor internet speeds for years. Adrian Drummond, has taken on the task of making some noise about this issue.

WEEKLY

He has created a petition on change.org, and needs our support to help make a difference. Mr Drummond has also spoken to Kate Washington, our local MP, and filled her in on his plans for the petition,

and what we as a community need, and deserve. Kate has written personally to the CEO of Telstra, Andrew Penn, and asked him to answer the concerns of Medowie residents, but has had no reply. Mr Drummond reports

that Newcastle experiences around 12 megabits per second for their internet, yet Medowie experiences speeds of only 1 or2. When he spoke with Telstra, he also discovered that he is only receiving ADSL 1, despite paying for ADSL 2. Mr Drummond told News Of The Area, “Basically, we are not getting the service

Ann Tomlinson, secretary of the Garden Club said, “After Jen finished she assisted members of the Garden Club to carry out their own flower arrangements, examples of their efforts are shown in the photograph.” The Photographic Competition attracted many entries in each of the categories and the winners were selected by popular voting. “It was a very close result in each category with entries of great quality,” Ms Tomlinson told News Of The Area. “The lunch was a gourmet’s delight of main

SUPPORT: Medowie families heading the support group.

By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE children who are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes have a wonderful support group

available to them, made up of parents from the area, whose children have been diagnosed. In 2010, Bart and Naomi Jarvis’s daughter was diagnosed

with type 1 diabetes at age nine. Another mother with a diabetic child contacted Naomi whilst still in hospital, offering support, and she remembers

it as being a very special moment – knowing that another mother was there for her, and understood. When Susan and Chris Patten’s son was diagnosed the following year, Naomi was able to pay forward that support by contacting Susan and offering hers. The women saw the need in the community, and created an informal catch up group for parents. They have since been joined by Megan and Scott Mackersey and Peter and Maryke Lee. News Of The Area met with these families, and listened to their stories about their children, their diagnoses, and their desire to make sure their Children are comfortable discussing their conditions and feel supported to ask for help if needed. The group get together throughout the year, and would like to extend an offer

Warning for Pokemon Go Users

By Simone JOHNSON

HAVE you recently noticed your child start roaming the streets with their eyes glued to their smart phone screens? It is very likely that they are playing the new Pokémon Go app. Launched on 6 July, the app is now the biggest mobile game in US history. The game is location based, with users catching Pokémon based on their physical gps whereabouts. While children, teens and adults are found roaming and often seen

running down streets to find desired Pokémon, the app has come with significant disadvantages. Police have warned users of the obvious effects of both trying to catch Pokémon while driving and walking along streets without paying attention to moving cars. Drivers are having to show extra caution in especially built up areas, with daily complaints about people walking in front of cars while dedicated to their Pokémon hunt. Built up shopping

centres and attractions such as the Medowie shopping precinct, Woolworths and Pauls Corner are some of the bigger Pokémon catching areas. Newcastle is a hive for Pokémon, already having hosted multiple ‘Pokémon Go Walks’. This see’s users meet up in an allocated location often decided via Facebook and walk around in a large group searching for a hive of Pokémon. The app tracks how far users have walked, with a lot of people finding the

game is forcing them to get outside and exercise. 20-year-old Salt Ash resident, Dane Peet told News Of The Area, “During the Pokémon walk, around 2000 people showed up.” “The night had to be meticulously planned due to safety reasons and the sheer amount of people.” “People were separated into groups of 100, with two leaders at the front and back of every group wearing high visibility vests.” “Because of the amount of road incidents involving the game, these safety

to any other families in the greater area with a diabetic child to join them. Susan Patten told News Of The Area, “One thing I remember is that it’s not just the child with type 1 diabetes, it’s the whole family. It doesn’t just affect that one child, the whole family has to learn to deal with it.” The group of parents have shared many experiences, and supported each other through some trying times. One of the most frustrating things they have found is the misconceptions about type 1 diabetes, and comments from strangers about how the children have come to be diagnosed – that it was somehow something they brought upon themselves through lifestyle and lack of exercise. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that attacks and kills the islet cells in the pancreas, resulting in the

Dog of a decision for caring owners “I’ve always rehomed them or I keep them as pets.”

q

CARE: Luke Miller with his 7-year old retired greyhound, Brois.

By Heather SHARP THE recent decision, seemingly made unilaterally, by Premier Mike Baird to shut down the entire NSW greyhound racing industry has come as a huge shock to the Medowie and surrounding region. The unexpected announcement has caught the industry off guard as no consultation with greyhound associations or owners, breeders, and trainers had gone into the decision making process. The decision based on a controversial report prepared by Commissioner Michael McHugh AC QC titled ‘Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in New South Wales’ has attracted significant media and political interest.

For local greyhound owner and breeder, Mr Luke Miller, racing greyhounds is a hobby that he enjoys with his father. Mr Miller told Medowie News Of The Area that the decision had rocked the industry and the owners, trainers, and breeders involved including business from support industries such as greyhound food suppliers. “I do it as a hobby,” Mr Miller said. “I don’t make my livelihood out of it, but for those who do, this is devastating news.” When asked what motivated Mr Miller to get involved with greyhound racing, Mr Miller told Medowie News Of The Area, “My father had greyhounds until my midteens.” “With the closure of the Newcastle track he gave up racing them.”

“In about 2010, I had stopped playing sport and my father had retired so I asked him to participate in it to keep his mind and body active.” “We went out and bought Boris, who after retiring, now lives with me as our family pet.” Mr Miller, as well as others involved in the greyhound racing industry, is concerned the Special Commission of Inquiry’s Report has factual inaccuracies and that Premier Baird has acted without due consideration of these inaccuracies. In particular, they are concerned that statistics of animal cruelty including greyhound deaths are incorrect and overstated, and that claims made are based on hearsay rather than evidence. The NSW opposition will oppose the move by Premier

Baird to ban greyhound racing. Member for Port Stephens, Ms Kate Washington said, “I abhor animal cruelty, and the McHugh report into the Greyhound industry sets out some disgusting and systemic practices within the industry.” “The report also includes 79 recommendations which establish a roadmap for righting the industry.” “The first recommendation is that Parliament should decide on the future of the industry,” she said. “Democracy continues to be trashed by Mike Baird and it's the working class in rural and regional NSW that's copping it.” Mr Miller said that following the ABC’s 4 Corners report, he thinks we have come a long way in the industry. “Those doing the wrong thing shouldn’t be tolerated.” “We don’t want those people in the industry.” Following the ABC’s report, the greyhound racing industry has undergone significant reforms including increasing the size of kennels, runs

requirements changed, and tracks having to meet new standards. These reforms have come with an expensive price tag, and for those breeders, owners, and trainers who made the adjustments did so with the understanding that greyhound racing would continue, there was no indication the industry was under threat of closure. Mr Miller told Medowie News Of The Area, “I’ve never put a dog down, I’ve always rehomed them or I keep them as pets.” “I’d like that on the record, I have not and will not put a dog down just because they can’t race.” When asked what it was that attracted people to greyhounds—whether as pets or as racers—Mr Miller told Medowie News Of The Area, “You don’t get a more affectionate dog than a greyhound.” “I like their raw athletic ability.” “They are docile by nature and eager to please.” “They are just such a loving

companion, they have such different personalities that easily fascinate you and draw you in.” Whether the industry should be reformed, better policed, better administered, harsher penalties imposed on those who don’t follow regulations, or shut down is the topic of much debate and argument across the community. Whatever the final outcome, strong political and community leadership is needed that takes into consideration those impacted by the decision, and a strong plan to enable people reskill into other areas and for businesses to receive compensation. While some may rejoice in the news the greyhound industry is closing down, without proper due care in facilitating a transition period, the government runs the risk of thousands of greyhounds being left homeless, with nowhere to go, and owners no longer being able to afford to keep them as the racing income will vanish.

YMCA to remain open By Heather SHARP IN what is a relief for Medowie residents who use the Raymond Terrace YMCA facilities, YMCA NSW has agreed to continue its management of the Centre until Friday, 2 September 2016. Medowie mother, Thea White, is relieved the Centre will remain open for longer, telling Medowie News Of The Area, “This is good news. My kids started gymnastics at the YMCA last term.” “They’re loving it and

getting so much out of going,” she said. Many parents have expressed their relief that the planned closure has been postponed, hopefully until a new provider agrees to take over the centre for fitness and activities in Raymond Terrace. This will give the Port Stephens Council more time to find another organisation to take over the running of the Centre. The decision was made in collaboration with the Council. Raymond Terrace YMCA

will continue to provide their full range of services and will be operating as usual. This means that for all current members, memberships will continue to be valid until the new closure date of 2 September. Some confusion has been created for members who have already been told by the YMCA that no more payments will be taken out for their membership. For questions about the Centre’s operations, please contact the YMCA at transition@ymcansw.org.au

Gym pumps up FITNESS

By Rachael VAUGHAN

WHEN long term Medowie resident, Jarad Ashpole, met Jacki Down, little did he know what their future would hold.

q

GROWTH: Jacki and Jarad with their newest little member, five-week old Piper.

THE pair met while Jacki was running her own successful gym in Sydney, before she took a leap of faith and moved the business to Medowie to be with Jarad. They have not only made Medowie their home, but have succeeded in bringing about positive change for many locals. A year on they stand united, with more than 70 members, 2 additional trainers, and a new baby girl to add to their blended family. They have extended their training space twice to further accommodate their growing client base, and now run classes in their 3 bay shed, and large outdoor covered area. In addition to the 18+ classes every week, they also have new programs starting soon. Another Medowie local business, Medowie Yoga, will

be joining them on Tuesdays for a ten-week program, as well as Olympic lifting on Thursday mornings. On 21 July, Jacki and Jarad will be running a Charity Boot Camp to join forces with Medowie Rugby's Breast Cancer charity day. Members are $5 and non-Members are $10 and all proceeds will be forwarded to the Rugby club to include with all the money they raise on the day for the Hunter Breast Cancer charity. On 15 August they also have their final 6-week fat loss challenge for the year. This one looks like it will be one of their biggest, and they invite you to join in. Jacki and Jarad have built a wonderful environment where they aim to make Medowie residents feel comfortable, and to help them aim for a better

quality of life, and healthier outlook. Jacki told News of the Area, “Our kids have really taken to the gym life. They are always wanting to be around classes, and wanting to be more active.” “Our classes are family friendly, and we think that if the kids need to come with their parents, then that will ultimately rub off on the children and this sets a great example,” said Ms Down. Medowie News Of The Area look forward to following Jacki and Jarad’s endeavours, and helping to support local small businesses. All information for all new programs can be found on the Project Health and Fitness Facebook page, www.facebook. com/projecthealthandfitness. com.au.
