Safe School Zone By Rachael VAUGHAN
q Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan visits the new Pedestrian crossing, and the cul de sac created from the original troublesome side street.
THE safety of Wirreanda Public School students has been improved significantly with the installation of a new pedestrian crossing at the Ferodale Road entrance to the school, and the upgrade of a side street adjacent that has caused traffic woes for countless years. The upgrade to the school’s entrance was made possible by the RMS Safe Around Schools program, and is a welcomed addition to Medowie. Medowie Public School last year also received a new pedestrian crossing, so both schools can now be confident in the increased safety of their students, instead of their previous school hours only designated crossing. Both schools now have

a permanent pedestrian crossing that is safe for anyone to cross at any hour of the day. Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan met with News Of The Area at Wirreanda Public School to view the new crossing and upgraded side street.
He said, “Today we celebrate the safety of our town’s children, and little old Medowie getting some much needed funds to address an important issue.” “I’m thankful to the RMS for getting involved and being such an important part of this.” “Yes, there’s so many other things that need work completed on them, but this is a fantastic start and we have to focus on the great fact that things are happening,” he added. The new cul de sac
replacing the side access street is now a no stopping zone, clearly marked with signs, and orange lines on the road, which means you are not permitted to stop or idle at any point. People parking within this area can be fined up to $425. There are other areas on Ferodale and Brocklesby Road to look out for if you need to pull over briefly to let children out of the car safely. These signs are parked as ‘No Parking’ signs, but allow drivers to stop for no
more than two minutes, as long as they remain within three metres of the vehicle. Parents dropping children off at Wirreanda Public School are urged to familiarise themselves with the road signs around the new road adjacent to the school to ensure they are not breaking any rules. Port Stephens Police have been out in force, ensuring drivers are sticking to the new road signs.
so committed not only their own professional development, but also wanting to give back to their community through their professional choices,” Mayor Palmer said. “From student paramedics, doctors and chemical engineers to wildlife conservation and environmental studies, the talent and determination of our students here in Port Stephens is something to be very proud of,” he added. Mayor Palmer says he is immensely proud to have such an array of businesses supporting this important initiative. “This year, we have a record number of 18 scholarships totalling $36,000, which shows that Port Stephens businesses know the value of supporting the aspirations of our future leaders,” Mayor Palmer said.

Try Scouts
PORT Stephens District Scouts are hosting an Open Day at two different locations for young people to come and give scouting a go. The two locations hosting events are the Tilligerry Park next to the RSL and Sports Club, and Raymond Terrace at Lakeside Sports fields. The Open Days will take place on Sunday 25 February 2018, giving members of the community the opportunity to come along and try out the adventures their local Scouts have to offer. Jane Hogno, District Commissioner Port Stephens, says the event is a great opportunity for young people and their parents to learn more about Scouting, and the programs and activities in place to help youth members develop confidence, resilience and responsibility. “Youth will be able to join a free six-week trial period, meet the Leaders, and get a glimpse of what activities
the Group has planned throughout the year,” she said. Scouts is a world wide Organisation for youth aged from six to twenty-six years. It teaches social and leadership skills through challenge and outdoor adventure. The program follows the school calendar year, with activities held on weekends and during school holidays. According to Region Commissioner Steve Fernie, there are more than 20,000 members in NSW. “We have developed a strong, fun program based on the needs of today’s youth,” he said. The Open Day will run from 10am until 2pm. All are welcome to attend! For more information about the Open Day event, please contact 1st Tilligerry Group Leader, Ralph Francis on 0414 474 612 or District Scout Leader, Dennis Conroy on 0400 976 335.

a competition in Roma, incidentally, another famous rugby league town. Unfortunately,
Antwone didn’t make the trip to Artie Beetson’s hometown. Always the sporty type, Antwone was playing a game of soccer just days before he was due to leave for Roma. As fate would have it, it was one game too many and Antwone ended the game with a fractured arm, ruling out of the Under 12’s competition. These days, Antwone and his family call Medowie home, and as such, his touch football career has a new home at Newcastle City. It hasn’t taken him long
to make an impact at his new home, with selection at last week’s NSW Junior State Cup held at Port Macquarie in only his first season playing in the Newcastle competition. Antwone scored five tries during the Cup competition, and played against the Balmain Tigers, Ballina Bull Sharks, Manly Sea Eagles, Doyalson Dragons, Singleton, Cronulla Sharks and Ryde Eastwood Hawks. His Newcastle City coaches and teammates definitely appreciate what Antwone has brought to the squad, not only playing
him in the important position of ‘Link’ but handing him the nickname “buzz” thanks to his electric speed. Antwone told News Of The Area, “Be loud and proud and chase after your dream, believe in yourself because you can create your future.” He may well be playing a sport foreign to them, but the Larrakia/Garinji nation of northern Australia would no doubt be very proud of Antwone. But you get the feeling from this talented young fellow, this is only just the beginning.

A concerned Mrs LK, Medowie
Dear Mrs LK,
Groovin’ the Moo sounds pretty placid. When I say those words I imagine a small group of happy hippies in their 60s, blissed out in a meadow with some cows, a flute and a tambourine. They are singing songs such as Sounds of Silence and California Dreamin’. Maybe they are smoking some cow dung, but that’s about as radical as it gets. They can’t cause too much mischief because they keep tripping over their flares and falling over. As the sun sets, they sit in a circle singing Kumbaya and drinking kombucha. Of course if that was the reality of Groovin’ the Moo, your 14-year-old daughter wouldn’t want to attend. So think about what she would like to attend. I’d imagine it would be an event with hundreds of young people full of euphoria listening to suggestive lyrics, making sweaty human pyramids, moshing and getting lit (I’m not sure what getting lit is, but it can’t be good thing). The positive in all of this is that these events are organised with lots of security. old favourites. The event is completely free, and the 1st Bulahdelah Scout Group will be there serving food in the form of a sausage sizzle, with all proceeds going back to the Scout Group and The War Memorial Trust. Trevor is a fascinating fellow, who have travelled the world, working in a variety of different fields and experiencing a colourful life full of exciting adventures. He has won two Golden Guitars at Tamworth and traveled all over the world performing concerts. Trevor now lives on a 70 acre farm surrounded by National Park in Bulahdelah NSW with wife Maya, 17 Arabian Horses, 2 donkeys, 1 goat, 10 chickens and breeding Whippet dogs. Trevor told News Of The Area, “Over the past few years 95% of my work has been overseas, USA, South Africa, South East Asia, Japan and the South Pacific and many other places in between, but it’s always so good to get back to,
what in my opinion is the best place in the world - Australia.” “I am really looking forward to a great afternoon
and concert at Bulahdelah this weekend, and looking forward to seeing lots of new faces there.”
q Trevor Knight is ready for a great Sunday afternoon in Bulahdelah.
