They were referred to Westmead Children’s Hospital, and started making regular trip for scans and meeting with cardiologists and surgeons. Rare condition for Lucas Medowie two weeks before Lucas’s arrival, being told they should expect to need to live close to the hospital for six months after his birth. Lucas was born in bed 13, on 9 April 2015. His first operation when he was 2 days old was expected to take somewhere between 6 and 8 hours, the Pickett family were given a pager and sent away to wait for the buzzer. After three and a half hours the pager went off and with their hearts in their mouths, they raced back to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

It had been a complete success and Lucas was being stabilised in recovery. His surgeon Dr Orr and the medical team had performed a miracle and were in awe of his progress. Despite the initial forecast of six months in Sydney, after 1 month Lucas was discharged from hospital to remain in the family unit for another month close to Hospital, and then they were able to bring him home to Medowie. Lucas has since had a second open heart operation at 6 months of age and will require another in a couple of years to complete the repairs. He still only has half

WORKS by Council, commencing on Tuesday 23 August will see new ramps constructed around Brushbox Avenue, Blackbutt Crescent, Silverwattle Drive, Kindlebark Drive and Grey Gum Street. Valued at over $140,000, the installation project also includes the construction of a

pedestrian refuge at Kindlebark Drive. Port Stephens Council’s Civil Projects Engineer, Rick Mackenzie said that the project would greatly improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians. “This is a significant infrastructure investment for pedestrian safety in Medowie,” he told News

Of The Area. “We want to ensure that residents have the confidence and ability to get around easily and safely and this project goes a long way to achieving that.” “We’d ask that residents exercise caution around work sites during the construction period,

Mr Drummond has been working hard with the petition, and communicating on behalf of locals with Telstra, and the CEO Andrew Penn. Mr Drummond successfully had his complaint escalated, and finally has had a positive outcome. Mr Drummond gave this advice to News Of The Area, for locals still experiencing congestion, “I think that if you commit to following up non-stop and pushing them for change, you will

get a result.” “Stay calm, but firm with them and don’t accept their generic script responses – take them away from their responses by asking hard questions and demanding a personal response to your case, and your home.” Mr Drummond said. Mr Drummond has been actively chasing a resolution since September last year, and has shown that individual effort can bring about a result.

Internet congestion update By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE problem of congested internet service in Medowie continues to frustrate locals, but there may be change on the horizon. Since our initial report on local man, Adrian Drummond, and his efforts to circulate a petition and make Telstra take notice of the lack of service provided to Medowie, there has been some improvement for some homes.

Mr Drummond said, “Perhaps if a large number of affected residents were to actively demand Telstra provide the service we pay for, then they may accept that Medowie’s service needs a lot of work – and do something about it.” Affected locals can contact Andrew Penn, CEO of Telstra at: Office of the CEO, Locked Bag 5639, Melbourne VIC 3001.

Seniors group includes guest speaker By Rachael VAUGHAN

AGE is certainly no barrier to fun, and there’s no better group to demonstrate that than the Medowie Senior Citizens Association. The group meets every first and third Tuesday of the month, at 10am in the Medowie Community Hall. They are a wonderfully active group, and invite any new members to come along, have a cuppa and see what they get up to. Entry each week is $3, and members are asked to bring a plate of food to share if they are able. Tea, Coffee and wonderful company is provided free of charge! Every second meeting the group have a guest speaker, where they invite prominent community members to provide valuable insight and information about their area of expertise. The group is largely selffunded, and they run raffles

and auctions to raise funds for activities and events the group participate in. But their fundraising doesn’t stop there. Bob Parish, President of Medowie Seniors, told News Of The Area, “We are also active fundraisers, contributing to lots of charities over the course of the year.” Medowie Seniors are on the lookout for any new members, who are interested in meeting new people, perhaps learning some new skills, and enjoying fun times. Mr Parish invites new members to give the group a go, “You’ll be surprised if you come and visit us. We certainly break the stigma that being a seniors group often carries with it. We are just about companionship, friendship and fun.” To join, please head on over to their next meeting. For further information, you can contact Bob on (02) 49817946.

Mighty Mike to teach kids about fire safety

MEDOWIE Rural Fire Service(RFS) have a new truck, and this one is going to be a hit with the tiny fire fighters of the future. ‘Mighty Mike’ is a model fire truck designed for younger children to sit in. It includes lights, siren and a TV screen simulating the experience of a crew traveling to a fire - and even shows images of Medowie streets as the ‘truck’ races to a fire. The truck was built by one of the Medowie RFS volunteers, our president, Bill Taylor. A significant amount of

detail went into making the model truck, the design and construction of which took hundreds of hours. The truck is named after a former brigade member, Mike Maskey, who passed away 7 years ago. Mike had been a strong supporter of the brigade when he was the local butcher, prior to becoming a member, and was a wellknown and respected local. As a volunteer, Mike Maskey was heavily involved in all brigade activities. Mike was a Deputy Captain of the brigade and took a leading role in training and community education.

Ken Johnson from Medowie RFS told News Of The Area, “Mighty Mike will be used to support the brigade’s community engagement activities.” “While the children are enjoying the experience brigade members will be taking the opportunity to discuss fire safety issues with their parents,” said Mr Johnson. Mighty Mike will be unveiled to the public at the Medowie Rural Fire Service Open Day, which will be held at the station on Saturday 10th September (10am-2pm).

Artist Goes Ape Over International Sale By Simone JOHNSON SALT Ash artist, Julie Bailey has recently broken into the international market, with her first artwork on its way to England. ‘New Friends’, a coloured chalk pastel piece of two young chimps has been bought as a wedding gift that will make its way to the other

side of the world. Purchased at Tanilba Art Gallery (TAG), the artwork will now spend weeks in transit after the added cost of postage. Julie who paints under her middle name ‘Florence’ has been creating works of art for the majority of her life but when she settled down to start her family she took a

step away to concentrate on raising her two children. With her children now in High School, she has more time to combine two of her passions: art and animals. Julie told News Of The Area, “It was truly lovely to think that someone thought so much of one of my pieces that they would buy it as a gift and send it oversees.”

“I rang my little sister to tell her the news and she pointed out my art was travelling further than me and perhaps it might open some doors internationally,” she said. Julie is also contributing her services to raise money for Willow, a dingo who requires $9000 worth of veterinary attention after

being hit by a car. The online auction to raise funds will close on Sunday 28 August, with the highest bidder winning a pet portrait by Julie of their favourite Furbaby. All money raised will go towards Willows vet bills. Bids can be made on the

Open burning warning as we enter bush fire season

“The RFS is not aiming to prevent residents from carrying out appropriate burning, but wants to ensure that they understand the rules, know their responsibilities and carry out burning safely”

By Rachael VAUGHAN

4 MEDOWIE NEWS OF THE AREA

MEDOWIE Rural Fire Service will be joining with News Of The Area to arm Medowie residents with as much fire safety information as possible before this year’s bushfire season begins. This week, the fire brigade would like to educate Medowie residents on the issue of Open burning in the Port Stephens Council Area. Ken Johnson of Medowie Rural Fire Service told News Of The Area, “The RFS is not aiming to prevent residents from carrying out appropriate burning, but wants to ensure that they understand the rules, know their responsibilities and carry out burning safely.” Burning in the open in NSW is regulated by the Protection of the Environment (Clean Air) Regulation 2010. The regulation allows Port Stephens Council to approve open burning of dead and dry vegetation in certain circumstances. During the Bush Fire Danger (usually 1st October to 31st March) burning in the open will require a Fire Permit. It is your

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

responsibility to control the fire and keep it on your own property. If it escapes, you might be held liable for any damage it causes. There are serious penalties for lighting fires in the open without the appropriate approval. Two common open burning situations in our area, and some important basic starter points to remember, include: Pile Burns – notification required all year Pile Burns are the burning of piles of leaves and sticks that have accumulated on your property. Port Stephens Council has given approval to burn dead and dry vegetative material on parcels of land that are over 4000m2 in size and zoned RU1, RU2, RU3, RU5 and R5 under the Local Environment Plan. The approval has other conditions that must be followed. Hazard Reduction – notification required all year Hazard Reduction is protecting a property and assets from bushfires. A Hazard Reduction

Certificate (HRC) must be obtained before any clearing or burning and this is required all year around. You can obtain a HRC free of charge from the NSW Rural Fire Service by calling 4015 000 during business hours. The NSW Rural Fire Service can even assist landowners carry out hazard reduction burns on their land. Hazard Reduction Certificates are not issued for existing piles of vegetation. The Certificate will list the conditions that you will need to follow. There are many things to take into consideration with open burning, and almost every situation requires approval. The RFS urges residents to always ask questions before starting, and to never assume something is okay without checking. For further information regarding Open Burning, please contact Lower Hunter Office on 4015 0000 or email lower.hunter@rfs.nsw.gov.au or www.rfs.nsw.gov.au You can also contact Port Stephens Council on 4980 0255 or email council@ portstephens.nsw.gov.au

Helpful Love

By Rachael VAUGHAN WHEN Port Stephens mother of two, Kim Oakhill, experienced the loss of a friends’ child in 2014, she wanted to do more for the family than just send flowers. Kim told News Of The Area, “Flowers are a lovely gesture, but not particularly helpful. I searched everywhere for something that was a bit different.” “Something useful or helpful. Something that said - I am so sorry. I could never imagine in a million years what you’re going through, but here’s a little something that may help you through this unimaginable time in your life.” Kim started bouncing the

idea of an online community of local service providers who provide helpful and/or unique services, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. She had a vision of an online community of vendors who wanted to genuinely make a difference. And so, the Helpful Love movement was created. Helpful love is growing by the day with current vendors offering domestic cleaning, lawn mowing, remedial massage, fruit and vegetable deliveries, personal styling, spiritual healing, hair and makeup, mobile mechanic services, family photography sessions and even private lounge room concerts. It is a perfect solution

their student representatives. It was a special morning that certainly showed how lucky we are to be a part of a community like Medowie. News Of The Area would like to take this opportunity to thank our returned servicemen for their sacrifices and service. for those looking for a helpful, practical gift during tough times, or even happy times – like a new baby, an engagement gift, a birthday present for those who could use some help. The Helpful Love website promotes a directory of quality vendors, which allows people to research ideas and book directly with their preferred vendor if they know what their friend or loved one would need. If they are unsure of the exact type of service to arrange, they can purchase a Helpful Love Gift Voucher from $50 that the recipient can redeem with any Helpful Love vendor they choose. In addition to the Helpful Love vendor community, Helpful Love also consists of a team of brand reps affectionately known as “Helpful LoveRs”. They

Public School Fundraise

Member, Belinda Beasley, told News Of The Area, “We are set for a fantastic evening! We’re looking forward to raising lots of funds and having a lot of laughs and fun doing so!” The night kicks off at 7pm, and is adults only. So, book that sitter, and join the Wirreanda P&C for a fun night out. For bookings, please phone Belinda on 0419905487.

By Rachael VAUGHAN IF you love supporting your local community, our children and their learning, and you want something fun to do for the night, we may have discovered the event for you to attend. The Wirreanda Public School P&C are a friendly bunch of parents who have become well-known for

their fun-filled fundraisers, and their planned trivia night for Saturday 27 August is set to be another night not to be missed. The theme this year is ‘Get in the record books’ and each table is invited to dress up as their favourite books and dress their table to match – there will be prizes for best dressed! Students participated with their countries in a variety of events, before coming together for a points tally and Medal ceremony.

MEDOWIE Christian School experienced a world of cultures this week, when they hosted a mini Olympics for all students from Kindergarten to year 6. Each student was allocated a different country, and encouraged to dress in the colours of their flag. They began the day with a cultural lunch, where

students, staff and visitors tried cuisine from around the world with each country hosting their own food and cake stall. The opening ceremony saw all students marching with their flags as each country was introduced to the games stadium. Students participated with their countries in a variety of events, before coming together for a points tally and

Medal ceremony. Sweden took the bronze, China the Silver and Canada the Gold. A visiting parent told News Of The Area, “It was such a lovely day with all the children – the school is so inclusive and put on a wonderful event. The children have had so much fun.” Well done Medowie Christian School on such a well organised event.
