Let Us All Rejoice By Daniel SAHYOUN LEAH Slockee said local Australia Day events always bring the community together. “I am proud to be Australian and there is so much to celebrate in the local area,” she said. “The history of the Worimi people, the great community spirit, our volunteer firefighters and the amazing natural environment are just a few.” On Friday 26 January, communities will be at the heart of Australia Day celebrations around Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions. A host of activities, entertainment and presentations have been organised to celebrate all things that make Australia great. Australia Day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet on 26 January 1788, the date
q Australia Day: Leah Slockee is proud of her Aboriginal heritage.
Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack to signal the beginning of the colony. A push to change the date stems from the view that celebrating on a day which commemorates the invasion of lands already owned is offensive to Indigenous people. Leah, who is a proud member of the Worimi Nation, said Australia Day “is meant to be a day that unites everyone”. “We are all Australian regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, everyone has their own opinion about the date and we need to respect these views,” she said. “We can’t change the past, but we can look to the future and find ways to continue to celebrate our inclusive, multicultural nation together.” Whether you plan to mark Australia Day with flags and snags or sun and surf, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has stressed the importance of celebrating the country’s 40,000 years of indigenous culture.

PFAS Health study open to residents and workers from Williamtown redzone FROM Page 1
The ANU’s National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health is holding focus group discussions for people who have experience of, and views about, PFAS health risks. Paterson MP Meryl Swanson encouraged people in the Williamtown, Salt Ash and Fullerton Cove communities to take part in the discussions and ensure their experiences were heard. “We are all fed up with waiting for the Federal Government to release its plan about how those affected by contamination from RAAF Base Williamtown will be given support and options,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.
“We must, however, continue to fight to have our stories heard and use every avenue possible to make the Government aware of the situation and its many impacts.” The PFAS Health Study says it will listen to the experiences of residents and workers in the Williamtown red zone and that this will “shape the direction” of the ANU research team’s next phase of investigations. “There is still conflicting information in
medowie@newsofthearea.com.au
the scientific community about the effects of PFAS on human health,” Ms Swanson said. “Anything we can do to add to this body of research will be to the benefit of all who are affected.” According to the ANU’s invitation, the discussions are likely to take between one and two hours, and participants will receive a “[A] small token of our appreciation ($50 EFTPOS voucher)” on completion of the discussion. If you’d like to take
part in one of the focus group discussions, or if you’d like more information about the study, please ring Ms Susan Trevenar on 02 6125 6079 or email pfas.health.study@anu. edu.au. Ms Swanson said she would return to Canberra in early February and would continue to take the plight of her PFASaffected constituents to the halls of Parliament House.

Let’s Talk Weather
By Geoff WALKER
TILLIGERRY is lucky to have its own weather station run by Alan Gibson, a retired meteorologist. He has his home base at Tanilba and gives constant updates of all relevant weather information. What’s more viewers can compare data dating back some 15 years. With Australia having just experienced the third hottest year on record (2017) we thought you
might like to look at how we have shaped up over recent months. November and December had temperatures varying from 14.1C to 41.7C which was 2 degrees above the norm. The big variant was the rainfall which was down 39.1 mm from the November / December average and a massive 307mm for the year. For January, the temperature is up 0.9 degrees on the norm and the rainfall down 81.8mm even before the end of the month.
Reading between the lines, this does not look good for the bushfire season with so much tinder dry scrub. Strong winds as we have seen lately will make runaway fires hard to stop. Why not check it all out for yourself. Punch in: ‘tanilbabayweather.com’ and it’s all there for you to see. The service is free and is linked to the BoM data. Alan’s drone videos are also very impressive. Send the link to your friends if you want to showcase the Peninsula.

Deployment to assist FOUR Rural Fire Service volunteers from Medowie have returned home after a five-day working deployment to help battle a large bushfire near Tamworth. Deputy Captain Harrison Wright along with Ken Johnson, Louise Morgan and Andrew Goodwin formed part of a Lower Hunter Strike Team sent to relieve local crews who have been battling the Roseneath fire, a 1200 hectare blaze which has been burning since 17 December. “Local crews had been
q Alan Gibson monitoring the weather data.
fighting the fire for almost two weeks and were in need of a break, so fresh crews were brought in to assist,” Mr Wright said. The Medowie fire fighters, who welcomed in the New Year on the fire ground, worked with aircraft and heavy plant equipment to contain the fire in extremely rugged and arduous terrain, with challenging weather conditions. “The combination of steep, rugged country and strong, extremely variable, winds made fire fighting very difficult.”
Please support the advertisers within the Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news.
The fires came on the back of a state-wide heatwave, as temperature records tumbled and fire warnings are put in place. Medowie RFB Community Engagement Office Ken Johnson is urging the public to take heed of any fire warning as the mercury continues to soar. “Despite the recent rain, the conditions are still very dry, it’s very easy for fires to start,” Mr Johnson warned. Mr Johnson also urges residents to make, or update, their bush fire survival plan, with a simple guide available at www.myfireplan.com.au

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
By pure coincidence, I spotted my vegan friend eating a Big Mac in the car park at Salamander. She is always going on about healthy living and animal cruelty. I’m tempted to call her out on this one. What do you think? Mrs HN, Fingal Bay Dear Mrs HN,
What an impressive piece of private investigating you have achieved. I can see you now, hiding in the bushes, your binoculars in one hand and your tape recorder in the other, like some modern-day Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs. Or was it at night, with your night-vision goggles, a baton strapped to your belt and a pair of handcuffs in order to immobilise your victim while you dragged a confession out of her? The conversation would go something like this: “Miriam, tell me the truth; is all that multicolour quinoa salad with a side of lentil patties just a front for your true, carnivorous habits?” “I don’t want to talk about it.” “Look, Miriam, I’m gonna make things real easy on you.” (Add an American accent at this point; it will make the scene more impressive). “It was a veggie burger. Honest.” “Ha, likely story. Well, I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do, Miriam. We’re gonna take you on down to the station and do some swabbing.” (Act like there’s two of you; it will make her feel insecure, and more likely to confess). “I’m on my way home. You’re scaring me.” “Mim. Can I call you that? Mim, there’s nothing to be afraid of, if you’re telling the truth. Are you, Mim? Are you telling the truth?” Thank goodness we have people like you in this world, Mrs HN, busy making citizen’s arrests on the poor hapless residents of downtown Salamander, with their low iron levels and occasional lapses in judgement. It will put less pressure on our real law enforcers so they can crack down on the iceaddicted burglars, white collar fraudsters, and P-platers who seem to think they can negotiate roundabouts while sexting. You go, girl! Carpe diem, Jasminda

Kindergarten tips and tricks By Rachael VAUGHAN THE time of year is rolling around again when a new troupe of fresh faced kindergarten kids prepare to begin their journey to ‘big school’, and their nervous parents send them off into the big wide world of primary school. We met with some kindergarten parents from last year to get the tips from those who know best on how to prepare yourself and your
little one for this big step, as the holidays wind up and you prepare for the first day of school. Jessica Bakes, a Wirreanda Kindergarten parent from 2017, has some sound advice to offer new kindergarten parents. She told News Of The Area, “Your child starting school can be the most stressful and worrying time of your life, it was for me.” “But in all honesty, I promise it lasted about ten minutes, and I realised they
q Ellie Green is ready for big school! Photo: Snap-It Photography
were just fine and going to be okay.” Jessica and some other Kindergarten parents put together these tips and tricks for parents to remember. When asking how their day was don’t be open ended with your questions, ask things like “Who did you sit next to at recess?” Or “what letter did you learn about today?” Because “how was your day?” Never gets any elaboration from a tired little person who has been on the go all day. The kids are going to be tired, maybe cut down on the afternoon activities for a term or two until they are adjusted. Don’t try and teach your child to read or write. That’s the teachers job and they are absolutely amazing at it. Just do whatever they ask of you, in regards to homework or readers. It’s not like preschool where at pick up, the teacher would give you a run down of their day and what they did, so ‘no news is good news’! If the teacher doesn’t speak to you then your kids day was probably fine, if you need to know something specific, just approach them. Most schools in the Port Stephens area have a
correspondence app, where the teacher posts daily or weekly tidbits of what they are learning. Jessica said, “In KH at Wirreanda Public School, the kids eventually did a fair bit of the posting and were able to show us their work.” “This is a good way to open discussion with your child.” Try and link up with other mums. It takes a village to raise a child and it’s important to be a part of an awesome village. We wish all the children from the feeder schools in our readership attending their first days of kindergarten all the very best! Be brave, use your best manners, be kind to your teacher and your classmates, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and above all, just have FUN. If you’d like your kindy child to be included in our ‘First Days’ article and photo gallery this year, please send your photo from your first day to rach@newsofthearea.com.au

the game we love, it was a no brainer.” The McGrath Foundation was founded by Australian cricketing legend Glenn McGrath and his late wife Jane after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jane unfortunately lost her fight with dreaded disease in 2008, however the foundation has helped many affected by breast cancer in the years since. The foundation has been instrumental by increasing
breast health awareness but also building a network of McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia through fundraisers such as “Pink Stumps Day” and the “Pink Test held at the Sydney Cricket Ground each year. It is fair to say that the McGrath Foundation was a winner on the day, and unfortunately for the Yowies, so was the visiting team. However, the result of the game was a long second to raising much needed funds for those involved. “At the end of the day, the game was played in the best spirit,” said Tom McKenzie. “And with everyone there for a good cause, over $700 dollars was raised by the end of play.”

Spank N the Monkey By Rachael VAUGHAN IF you’re looking for a nice, quiet Australia day, sitting in a pub with a quiet duo who will sit in the background and won’t disturb your quiet conversation, then Nelson
Bay Diggers RSL is not the place to be. But if you’re looking for a fantastic night out on the town, celebrating our beautiful country, then Nelson Bay Diggers RSL is definitely the place to be, and ‘Spank N the Monkey’ are the
duo you need to make it a memorable night! Spank N the Monkey utilises state of the art musical sequencing to faithfully reproduce everything from 1960’s classics through to the most current Top 40 hits. Spank N the Monkey’s

repertoire is deliberately diverse and covers the best songs from each decade since the 60’s. Murray Roach is a seasoned vocalist with an impressive range. He has performed as a front man for many top Newcastle acts over the past decade and beyond, and is a consummate entertainer with an uncanny ability to draw in the crowd and keep them involved. Ross Flynn makes up the second half of this impressive performing duo. He is a superb guitarist, as well as accomplished vocalist. His natural ability, dedication and absolute enthusiasm toward his craft guarantee a quality performance every time. Murray told News Of The Area, “We have a big following in the Bay Area.” “We’ve been playing all around the local venues since we started in 2000, and we’ve always got a great response.” “We love rocking out hard for those guys,” he said. Ross added, “Yeah, the crowds at the Bay are always great!” “They know how to party,
and it’s always a fun time playing out there.” Spank N the Monkey are “crowd pleasers”, and entertainment is the name of the game. The two boys have developed a high-energy
act based on their unique rapport, witty banter and stage presence. This is a night out not to be missed. Check them out on Australia Day, Friday night from 9:30pm.
