Community Rises for School’s Spring Fair

THE dust has finally settled after the immensely successful Spring Fair at St Brigid’s Primary School Raymond Terrace, and they are shouting from the rooftops in excitement about their achievements.

The day saw attendees able to participate in a plethora of activities, from side show games and carnival rides, to fire engine tours and face painting.

The best lolly stall to ever grace a school fair ensured every child in sight had a special sweet treat, and a collection of handmade pieces made for the perfect opportunity to start some early Christmas shopping.

After all takings were counted, and all accounts settled, the St Brigid’s Spring Fair committee announced to a very excited staff and student body that they had raised a mammoth $30,000 for their school.

Ms Jones told News Of The Area, “This figure is really quite unbelievable and such an enormous amount of money.”

“This endeavor would not be possible without this large contribution from our Parents and Friends Committee on behalf of all families.” by a suite of corporate partners, community groups and individuals.

Executive Director of the Children’s Cancer Institute, Professor Michelle Haber AM, said she is excited about the outcome of the auction.

“The Build for a Cure initiative is in its fourth year and has raised over $2 million to date for The

St Brigid’s School has a special project in mind for the money they have raised, with plans for developing amazing outdoor learning spaces for their students.

Ms Jones said, “We couldn’t have pulled this off without the support of all the local businesses who supported our fair, and hope that our school community in turn will support them where they can.”

“We were especially thankful to our major sponsor News Of The Area, and also to Capital Chemist in Children’s Cancer Institute.

All the money raised goes towards research which will help us achieve our goal of curing every child with cancer,” Professor Haber said.

“Annually, 950 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer with nearly three losing their battle every week, so the funds raised will be

Originally founded by two Fathers of children with cancer in 1976, the Children’s Cancer Institute is the only independent medical research Institute in Australia, wholly dedicated to research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer.

Key build partners this year include the McCloy Group, who donated the 700m2 block of land, located in The Bower in Medowie, and McDonald Jones Homes who donated the house.

268,000 Kms Clocked Up

IN Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men with more than 3,000 men dying from it every year.

For men the risk is one in seven by age 75.

Those with direct relatives who have had prostate cancer are at an even greater risk.

Port Stephens has the active Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group to help the men in our community who are undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

Early detection is important, and the general recommendation is for men to have a PSA blood test every two years from age 50-69 and for those who are high risk

commencing earlier.

The Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group was founded six years ago to provide support, transport to and from treatment, develop awareness and educational programs.

The volunteers average one patient transport per day every day.

They also operate a buddy system and the transportation that the group provides has seen 2214 trips, mostly to Newcastle between January and June 2018.

Max Pride of the Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area, “That’s 603 patients and over 268,000 km’s travelled.”

“It is due to the demand for transport that the Nelson Bay Cancer Patient

Transport Group was recently established, to meet the needs of all local cancer patients, both male and female.”

This service has been funded by local Clubs,

Community Groups and the Cancer Council of NSW as well as donations from the patients.

The Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group has

also provided donations to the Mater Hospital for research into prostate cancer, Port Stephens Veterans and Aged Care, Tomaree Community Hospital and

the Tomaree Palliative Care Support Group.

The Port Stephens Friendship Group is an independent, not for profit social group for men and

ladies.

Founded in 1995 by Bev Lee, a local Port Stephens resident, who recognised there were many people in

the community who needed to simply meet friends, especially residents new to the area.

The Friendship Group

travelled to The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) in the grounds of the John Hunter Hospital for the annual Open Day. HMRI fights the illnesses affecting lives throughout the world, one person, one family, one community at a time.

The HRMI’s translational research model aligns over 1500 researchers, students and support staff from Hunter New England Health and the University of Newcastle, inspiring new discoveries to deliver a healthier future.

Noeline Male of the Friendship Group told News Of The Area, “A very educational day was enjoyed by a number of Port Stephens Friendship

members and friends at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) on the yearly Open Day. “The dedicated time and work put in by the Research Workers is proving to be very beneficial towards the cure of many ailments,” she said.

The Group’s focus is solely on friendship with lots of fun activities planned throughout the year, including dining out, casual BBQs, movie days, walking for pleasure, coach trips and short holidays.

The Friendship Group meets on the last Tuesday of every month in the corporate area of Wests Diggers, Nelson Bay, at 5pm.

THE Probus Club of Port Stephens has taken another Mystery Bus Tour.

Coach driver Ron kept up the suspense of their destination until the last few kilometres when a road sign gave the game away.

41 Probus members and guests set off early in the morning and out to the highway via Medowie, through Booral and Stroud.

Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “The countryside wasn’t looking too bad; there was a hint of grass cover.”

Finally the coach travelled over a fairly well-maintained dirt road arriving at the green oasis of Riverwood Downs; a

“The friendly staff greeted their visitors in brilliant spring sunshine and invited us to morning tea, which was traditional

Australian billy tea with fresh damper served up with butter and golden syrup, seated in a circle around a campfire,” she said.

The tea was made in big empty cans and the Riverwood Downs host showed off “swinging the billy” to settle the tea leaves.

Morning tea was followed by a short history of the property and surrounding area.

Members of the group were encouraged to explore the grounds and walk down by the river, which was such a pretty sight and on occasion visitors may spot platypus in this lovely spot.

Later in the dining room staff served the group a delicious roast lunch with the beautiful bread and butter pudding.

THE final term of the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Awards for 2018 were kicked off this week, with presentations to students made by Mrs Holly Deguara, Principal of Salt Ash Public School.

The awardees for this week were; Liam Bennett from Grahamstown Public School, for his efforts in raising money to support the farmers by recycling cans and bottles.

Selman Hassan from Irrawang High School, for being an outstanding, communityminded young man, involved in may activities in and out of school - including Student Representative Council.

Debating, Public Speaking and representative sport, whilst consistently displaying our school PBL values.

Amber Lee Sloss from Hunter River High School, nominated for her positive and successful efforts in representing Hunter RIver High School at the Makers Festival in Newcastle.

Amber Lee is to be congratulated for her

ability to conduct mature conversations with industry representatives about her own goals, and the goals of Hunter River High School’s P-Tech program.

Sage Farina from Irrawang Public School for the respect that he

demonstrated for the local environment.

Sage used his own initiative and collected rubbish around the local area, and disposed of it properly on his way home from school.

Tower Triumph for Firie

AT the culmination of months of planning and training, 98 storeys, 1504 stairs, and a vertical rise of 820 feet, wearing a full firefighting kit of over 20kg, their energy tanks were low, but their hearts were full.

Port Stephens fire fighters did their community proud when they fulfilled their goal of climbing Sydney Tower Eye, raising awareness and much needed funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

We were represented by the Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue ‘Team Underdogs’ and the Lower Hunter RFS team made up of members from Medowie Rural Fire Brigades, surrounding Brigades and staff from the District office - Isabel Rios, James Goodliff, Louise McClelland, Ade Rolfe, Fred Munoz, Alice Lavender, Kyra McGroreyClark, Amy LeMesurier, Darryl Luck, Brooke Lindsay, Aaron Lindsay, Ian Turnbull, Mitchell Everingham and Ken Hepplewhite.

Retained Firefighter Isabel Rios told News Of The Area, “The feeling on the ground was exciting, there was so much good positive energy in the air, it was electrifying.”

“It is truly humbling to be a part of something so incredibly big, special and personal to a lot of people.”

“This year was more emotional for a lot of us, as Adam Regal, the man behind the inspiration and drive of the ‘Firies Climb for MND’ passed away this year from MND.” “His legacy will continue to be carried on for many more years,” she said.

Retained Firefighter James Goodliff told News Of The Area, “I was pretty nervous leading into it because it’s such a massive tower, but we all made it and in the process we raised thousands of dollars for research into MND, which is fantastic.”

told News Of The Area, “As the climb drew closer, it started to affect me more.”

“At the first school bucket shake we had a lady donate who said ‘If there had been a cure 6 years ago my husband would still be here’, and at the school bucket shake last week, a lady, who had suffered progressive MND for the past 16 yrs, came to donate some of her own money, her comment was that it’s unlikely they’ll find a cure in her life time.”

“After completing the climb, I was tired, sore, proud, accomplished, but still emotional - reading the floor dedications of people lost to MND as I climbed became a little overwhelming at times but was a great reminder of why

I was doing it,” she said.

Kyra McGrorey-Clark from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area, “I carried a photo of my friends dad, who currently suffers with slow progressive MND, up the tower because he missed out on an opportunity to climb himself this year.”

“I was extremely emotional in the lead up to the climb itself, but having him with me pushed me to the top of that tower for sure.”

“I felt a mix of emotions; proud, accomplished, sad, happy, honoured, hungry and nauseous all at the same time.”

Green Flag Award Country Club lines up Awards NELSON Bay Foreshore Regional Park has been awarded Parks & Leisure Australia’s prestigious Green Flag Award for ‘raising the standard’ for parks and green spaces.

Nelson Bay Foreshore joins an elite group — it’s one of just 13 parks in Australia and one of the first outside a capital city to receive the Green Flag Award. Until this year, only parks in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne had been awarded the honour.

The Green Flag Award originated in the United Kingdom in the 1990s to raise the standard of green spaces and bring people back to parks.

Parks Program Coordinator Michael Reay says it’s an honour to receive the award.

“Nelson Bay Foreshore is one of the premier destinations on the New South Wales coast for dolphin and whale watching, with around a quarter of a million visitors and residents visiting the park each year,” he said.

“It’s really rewarding for Port Stephens to be one of the first regional councils to be acknowledged for our park management, and for Nelson Bay Foreshore to be seen as setting the benchmark for green spaces across Australia,” he said.

“The judges were also very impressed with concepts of the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan, which aims to improve the links between the foreshore and town centre.

“We take pride in our parks here in Port Stephens, and taking care of them is a real team effort, so it’s great to see all that hard work recognised,” he said.

The Green Flag Award judging process is rigorous, with applicants judged against 27 different criteria and an on-site inspection for finalists.

The award was presented at the International Parks and Leisure Congress in Melbourne.

SHOAL Bay Country Club has dominated the list of finalists in this year’s prestigious Australian Hotels Association NSW Awards for Excellence.

The recently refurbished venue has been named as a finalist in a host of categories including Best Family Friendly, Best Outdoor Experience, Best New/Total Redeveloped Hotel – Country, Best Casual Dining Venue - Country Northern, Best Live Music Venue, Best Sports Bar, Hotel of the Year – Country, to name a few.

The Australian Hotels Association NSW Awards for Excellence are recognised as the most prestigious awards programme in the hospitality industry.

“Being such reputable awards in hospitality, we are very pleased to have received wide recognition by the Australian Hotel Association,” Shoal Bay Country Club spokesperson Peter Lazarus said.

“It’s certainly been a whirlwind 12 months after re-opening in December last year, but seeing our vision come to fruition, we just couldn’t be happier with the end result. The hard work of our team, and the widespread support of the local community has been simply overwhelming,” Mr Lazarus said.

The Awards honour the achievement of excellence in NSW hotels across a variety of categories and reflect the best in the nation with numerous winners going on to claim the national title in their category.

Shoal Bay Country Club was also recently nominated as a finalist for its recent refurbishment in the 2018 Asia Pacific Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, the Eat Drink Design Awards 2018, and Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2018.

We all know that a plethora of mobile phone apps exist in this techno age, but, a new app has left me in shock and awe! This clandestine new app is only available on the “Dark Web”. It combines existing technologies, but, with a new extension, which is called “Skin Percentage Ratio Recognition”, that can “search into” any other mobile within range, isolate and digitally scan the “Photo Gallery”, then, once recognising images of persons, download only the images which reveal more than 75% skin! I am sure you will fully comprehend the purpose and the implications of this notorious new app. In this technological age, everything we once used to consider private, is now out there, flying through the ether. Our conversations, texts, banking, financial details and photos are all flying through the air, residing in the clouds, available to any hacker!

Troubled Mr Mac, Tea Gardens Dear Mr Mac, NO wonder you are troubled! It sounded as though you were sitting in a Crime Scene Investigation unit. I pictured you surrounded by mounting piles of paperwork, a half doughnut and stale coffee within hands’ reach, a loyal German Shepherd called Muster at your feet. Loitering behind you was a geeky yet attractive girl with a short fringe, red lipstick and Doc Martins, busily uncovering important new evidence about the infiltration of clandestine groups and information orbiting the earth like some fake Chinese moon. Every now and then, mysterious CSI music played followed by typewriter sound effects, ridiculously out of date in this day and age, but it gave the scene the right ‘feel’.

I felt so anxious about this ‘skin app’, that I turned on the television for some diversionary therapy. Rage was on, so I was confronted by music videos revealing about 85 per cent skin. That sent me into a real spin, so I went to One Mile for a swim and found out that a man had just that morning been bitten on the bicep by a shark. He’d been swimming at Samurai so he was probably showing 100 per cent skin.

You are right, though. Everything that was once private is now flying through the ether, which is why you should only post things that you wouldn’t mind the world seeing. There’s evil lurking in every corner, Mr Mac, maybe even in the coastal paradise known as Tea Gardens. Cue dramatic music, Muster raising one eyebrow in a quizzical way, and the geeky girl uncovering a new cell of weirdos.

Balloons for Halloween Safety

HALLOWEEN is right around the corner, and regardless of which side of the fence you sit on in regards to celebrating the occasion, you cannot fault Medowie’s approach to safety on this spooky night.

News Of The Area is again proud to join several local businesses in sponsoring the free balloons offered to residents as part of the ‘Medowie Safe Streets’ campaign.

First launched in Medowie by resident Susan Patten, the safety campaign has grown rapidly in the three years it has been running, with residents encouraged to place a free yellow balloon on their letterbox if they welcome trick or treaters on October 31.

This year, News Of

The Area, Medowie Neighbourhood Watch, Flourish Naturally Clinic and Remedial massage and Moore than Scents and Melts joined together to contribute funds to ensure the balloon campaign may run again this year.

Residents are encouraged from this week to seek out the trick or treat buckets at local supermarkets, shops and cafes to take an orange balloon with its very own safety message.

Safety is, as always, the major focus of Halloween, with parents reminded to accompany their children and speak with them about the differences between taking lollies from strangers, and visiting neighbours with an adult on this one celebrated night.

The ‘Medowie Mums’

facebook page also again this year is compiling a list of streets to form a map that is released on Halloween day, outlining a route for parents to follow for houses that have indicated they are happy to be a part of Medowie’s Safe Streets for Halloween.

An extra addition to the map this year is colour coded pins - orange to indicate a house with food treats, teal to indicated non-food treats to be inclusive of children with allergies or aversions, and purple to indicate a house with both.

Halloween this year falls on Wednesday 31 October.

IT’S the gateway to the stunning Worimi Conservation Lands and the largest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere — and now Birubi Point Aboriginal Place will have a tourism interchange to match.

been successful in receiving $5.4 million from the Growing Local Economies Fund to build an information centre and tourism interchange at Gan Gan Road, Anna Bay. Mayor Ryan Palmer says this is a game-changer for the residents of Anna Bay and the thousands of people who visit

each year.

“Birubi Point Aboriginal Place is the best piece of coastline in Australia, and this funding will ensure we can enjoy and protect it for many years to come,” Mayor Palmer said.

Steve Bernasconi, Council’s Community Services Coordinator, says today’s announcement has been many years in the making.

“This funding announcement is the culmination of 7 years of hard work by the community and Port Stephens Council.

“Many people have been involved in coming up with a solution that will create a unique visitor experience and improve the lives of locals, while respecting the value and significance of this incredible place,” he said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve been able to achieve here so far, and for what’s yet to come,” he added.

The proposed design includes 50 car parking spaces (including 3 disabled spaces), 10 coach parking spaces with a drop-off zone that can accommodate 2 coaches, and provisions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The interchange has been designed by urban planning firm McGregor Coxall and architects CHROFI in consultation with a local design team.

Walk for Freedom

TOGETHER a group of Port Stephens residents travelled into Newcastle last weekend to make a positive and peaceful stance on a global issue - the eradication of human trafficking.

‘Walk For Freedom’ took place on Saturday October 20, from Bar Beach to Merewether Beach to raise awareness of modern day slavery.

The group walked silently and in single file wearing all black, which was confronting, but got the attention needed to raise awareness.

Flyers were handed out by the volunteers members of the public to explain what the group was raising awareness for.

Walk For Freedom is a global campaign organised by anti human trafficking organisation ‘A21’.

Walks were completed in over 450 cities, across more than 50 countries, where thousands of people took a stand in their local communities, raising funds and awareness, and calling for an end to modern-day slavery.

The ‘Newcastle A team’, made up of a number of Port

Stephens residents, wanted to do their bit organising their local event, to come to come together to fight for injustice and be a voice for those who have no voice.

The group of volunteers from Newcastle A Team will be hosting a fashion swap event in March 2019, and

more information will be released on their facebook page “Newcastle A Team” in the coming weeks.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, generating more than $198 billion every year.

“Millions of men, women and children sold, trafficked and exploited, not ‘once upon a time’, not ‘only in the olden days’ but right now, in 2018, all over the world.”

“We can do something about it, one step at a time.”

Caswell Plans Revealed PORT Stephens Council has revealed its plan for a big makeover of Caswell Reserve Mallabula.

This follows a recent announcement of a State Government grant of $200,000 for refurbishment of the suburb’s Tennis Club.

Commenting on the plan, ward councillor Steve Tucker said that the project would be in two stages.

“The existing amenities block will be demolished and relocated to the other side of the car park.

A new children’s playground will be constructed closer to the picnic shed and all of the carpark and access roads will be sealed,” he said.

“This will make the entire waterfront reserve more inviting and user friendly,” he added.

“Stage two of the makeover will see a rebuild of the boat ramp and construction of a new concrete pathway which will extend from Billy’s Beach viewing platform back to Caswell Reserve and across a bridge to the reserve in front of the existing houses,” he said.

Council is currently liaising with Tilligerry Lions Club in a joint venture to upgrade the park facilities adjacent to the recently constructed amenities block in Peace Pde. Tanilba Bay.

The Big Marn at Charity Golf Day

GOLFERS from around Port Stephens and across the country gathered to support the Latitude One Real Futures Foundation Charity Golf Day at Horizons Golf Resort this week.

Local business and community groups were well represented as were students from our local high schools who competed in the Valley Homes Schools Challenge, in which St Philip’s Christian College took the honours.

With over $70,000 in prizes up for grabs, the annual Golf Day was well attended.

One highlight of the event was surprise guest speaker Daryl Brohman who also co-conducted the charity auction.

Daryl, nicknamed The Big Marn, is a retired Australian former Rugby League footballer and coach of the 1970s and 1980s, now best known as a commentator and media personality.

Brohman played League for the Penrith Panthers and the Queensland rugby league teams.

In September, Joy won the IFBB Professional League NSW State Championships and only last weekend finished second at the Australian National Championships in Melbourne.
