Invited to attend as special guests to participate in collecting information are the RSPCA, AWAC (Animal Welfare Advisory Council), MP Mark Pearson, MP Kate Washington, and the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA). Mark Fraser, CEO of the PIAA, will be hosting the forum at the Hunter Pet Motel, the only fully accredited boarding facility in the Hunter. Baron’s owners, Dean Compton and Nathan Wilson, spoke with News Of The Area this week
about the forum. “Losing Baron in such away has been horrific,” Nathan said. “The hours and days that followed showed us that our story, although devastating to our family, was not that different from the hundreds of messages we were receiving from other people who also lost their pets in preventable and shocking circumstances whilst in the care of facilities across the country.” “This is when we realised our story, our worst moments, were only just scratching the surface,” he said. Nathan and Dean reflected on the hundreds of messages of support they have received, including celebrities, who either share their love of animals or have a
similar tragic story to tell. In the time since Baron’s death, Dean and Nathan have met with media, industry leaders, industry professionals and politicians. “Our story gave animals like Baron, and their owners, their voice,” Dean said. “We owe it to Baron and the hundreds like him who have died in facilities across the country, those who were disregarded by the facilities that were entrusted to care for them.” “We now stand with the support of thousands and demand industry reform.” “The industry is listening and change will happen,” he said. Those wishing to participate in this important forum are welcome to attend.

almost 15 years ago, and have been growing steadily with community support ever since. The original Market convenors, Cliff & Nita Smith, were at the forefront of getting the community market idea off the ground along with much-loved local pastor, the late Wayne Mordue. After 15 years of growth in our town, the Medowie Community Markets now boast up to 70 stallholders every month. The 2016 Christmas market saw stall numbers swell to more than 80. Stallholders sell a wonderful variety of both homemade and store produced products, selling jewellery, honey, jam, candles, plants and lots more. Markets Co-ordinator David Deal told News Of The Area, “Overflow Church has been convenor of our markets for a long while now, and it’s
a service we are so pleased to be able to provide for the people of Medowie.” “We love seeing the community come out on market day, supporting businesses and stall holders, and just having a great day out with the family.” “We look forward to another successful market calendar again this year,” he said. The markets are on the second Saturday of the month outside the Bull and Bush hotel. The first market for 2016 will be held Saturday 11 February starting at 8.00 am. If you’ve always wanted to have your own stall, the time and price is right. Stalls are among the cheapest around other markets of similar size, starting at $35 for a 4m x 4m site. You can book a stall by contacting Overflow Church on 49829123.

DESPITE the forecast for rain on Friday evening, it paused for long enough for the successful 2017 start of the Medowie Little Athletics Club. To top it off for the little athletes, and their parents, the first evening back featured a sweet treat fundraiser. Mr Jason Wells, President of Medowie Little Athletics, told Medowie News Of The Area, “We hold fundraising dinner evenings as part of our meets, usually on a fortnightly basis.” “We invite external food and beverage trucks to provide an alternative to everyday canteen food, and as our meets occur on a Friday night, it is a welcome night off from the kitchen for some parents.” This fortnight, Ice
Creamery On Wheels, a local ice cream truck that attends many festivals and other events, were the suppliers of sweet, icy treats for the children once their training was finished. Ice Creamery On Wheels is a local family run business who support charity and fundraisers, donating back to the Medowie Little Athletics Club at the end of the night. Funds raised through these endeavours go straight back into the Medowie Little Athletics Club. Mr Wells added, “Funds are being used to update track and field equipment, and over the mid-term as a way to upgrade our existing canteen with new benchtop space and storage.” It definitely received the thumbs up from the children.

Dear Jasminda, I’ve a severe case of beach space rage. It seems every time I’ve ventured to the beach over summer, people/whole families are ready to practically sit on my towel or move in under my umbrella. Not only has it happened to my family, but I witness it happening to others too, despite there being a whole beach. What is the go here? Where have manners gone? Am I being too petty? Mrs AC, Salamander Bay IN his 1923 novel Kangaroo, D.H. Lawrence described Australian beachgoers as “mindless as opossums”. After receiving your email, I conducted some cuttingedge research with the chardonnay-sippers under my ornamental grapevine, and it appears that Lawrence’s assessment still stands. They too have been irritated by uncouth hordes invading their personal beach space: thoughtless towel shakers and undernourished budgie smugglers were topof-the-list irritations.Something happens when people get a good whiff of salty air and pheromones. They shed their layers (physically and metaphorically) and revert back to a carefree (some would say barbaric) childhood state. Lara Bingle hasn’t helped (you don’t look like Lara Bingle do you? If so, no wonder people are throwing themselves on your lap). When she said, “Where the bloody hell are you?” with her perky chest and vacuous stare, she invited beach bedlam. It’s been spreading like a venereal disease, from Bondi to Bagnalls, ever since. So, what you need to do, Mrs AC, is create some firm boundaries. When I say firm, I mean four tomato stakes and a roll of crime scene tape. For added impact, get the kiddies to make a ‘victim’ sandcastle and cover it in a white sheet. I guarantee the general public will stay away, though be prepared for a bit of Port Stephens Local Area Command interrogation between swims. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

asking you to deny yourself of it for the time being.” At the same time, Vegemite was promoted as essential for “infant welfare” in magazines with advertisements promoting the importance of the B complex vitamins to health. Vegemite soon rose in popularity by the marketing campaign written by J. Walter Thompson advertising in 1954 with groups of smiling, healthy children singing a catchy jingle titled, “We’re happy little Vegemites”. The advertising campaign appeared on television in 1956 and was later remastered in 1980. “Today is a historic day for Bega Cheese,” executive chairman Barry Irvin said. “This is an exciting evolution for the company, these iconic brands alongside the Bega brand are strong building blocks to enable Bega Cheese to become a great consumer goods business.” “We’re really proud of the Bega brand, we
think there’s so many opportunities about how we might market and build two iconic Australian brands in Bega Cheese and Vegemite,” he added. Bega is acquiring salad dressings and other products such as Parmesan cheese, but it does not include Kraft’s Philadelphia cheese business.
THERE is nothing more Australian than waking up on Australia Day to a hot piece of toast smeared with lashings of butter and Vegemite. Men at Work sung about a vegemite sandwich in their famous hit song “Down Under” and John Williamson sang that there was nothing more true blue, “than standin’ by your mate when he’s in a fight. Or just Vegemite.” The news that Vegemite is set to return to Australian ownership is a great way to kick off 2017. Dairy company Bega recently announced that it would buy most of Mondelez International’s Australia and New Zealand grocery and cheese business.
The deal will see Bega take over Mondelez’s Port Melbourne factory, where 300,000 jars are produced daily. Vegemite has been a part of Australia’s history for as long as some of us can remember. Australia’s favourite spread was developed in Melbourne from leftover Brewer’s Yeast with a variety of vegetable and spice additives, by Cyril Percy Callister in 1922. Originally Vegemite was promoted as a healthy food for children during World War II. The advertising emphasised its medicinal value: “Vegemite fights with the men up north! Feverish Outbreak NSW Labor has accused NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner of “dropping the ball” on the current Statewide outbreak of Ross River Fever – the worst outbreak in two years. In the last seven weeks alone, NSW Health has reported 229 cases. NSW Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord today demanded Mrs Skinner step up public education campaigns on preventing the mosquitoborne disease Ross River Fever. “Make no mistake, we are the middle of a Ross River surge in NSW … and again, the State Government and its health minister are unprepared,” Mr Secord said. This was after NSW Health confirmed that December 2016 was the worst month for Ross River Fever in the year with a 155 recorded cases. The increase in Ross River Fever reports from November 2016 to December 2016 was almost five-fold. As of January 20, 2017 there were 108 cases so far in NSW. Mr Secord said we are in a “perfect storm” for
mosquitoes. “It is very wet, humid and there have been king tides along the major rivers in Sydney. That means plenty of breeding opportunities for mosquitoes in our waterways and in still water in backyards.” “Unfortunately, the State Government and its health minister Jillian Skinner have dropped the ball on another public health issue.” Ross River fever is one of a group of viruses called arboviruses (or arthropod-borne viruses), which are spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Some will have flu-like symptoms that include fever, chills, headache and aches and pains in the muscles and joints. Some joints can become swollen, and joint stiffness may be particularly noticeable in the morning. A general feeling of being unwell, tired or weak may also occur at times during the illness; and some may experience symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness for many months.

can include: headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, confusion, disorientation and nausea. Cr Steve Tucker fell victim to heat stroke by spending a mere hour gardening recently. “I felt decidedly unwell and had to lie down in the cool for several hours,” he said. Another well-known business had to close when its owner also suffered a bout of the debilitating illness. Reports of asthmatics reaching for their ‘puffers’ were common as the high humidity took its toll.

Amazing turn to right path, a 360 degree turnaround in life
TYRON Lane has made mistakes in his past that saw him do time in a juvenile detention centre and then in jail. While he regrets these mistakes, it is what he did with that acknowledgement that makes him an indigenous role model that young men and women can look up to. No person is without fault, but the ability to claw back from your lowest point and make something truly amazing from your life is to be commended. Tyron did just this when he decided that he needed to turn his life around.

Uncle Tex Skuthorpe, a well-known Aboriginal Artist, encouraged him to further his talent, and his cousin Dane Varagnolo, also serving time with Tyron, painted with him and pushed him to excel. Tyron’s art is exceptional and shows the love for his culture and his efforts to portray it passionately. Tyron is a proud Worimi man, who has many family members residing in Worimi land at Karuah. Tyron told News Of The Area he learned invaluable lessons during his time in detention and
wants to use them to help others. “I’ve changed my ways and learnt so much and want to help young fellas stay away from trouble.” I’ve always tried to help my younger generation, and show them that there’s other ways of life rather than spending it in jail,” he said. Tyron remarked that during his time in detention, he met a lot of young people who had so much more to give than what they were able to while incarcerated. “While I was in juvie and jail, I met a hell of a lot of talent that should be out here showing it, not wasting it in there.” “I want the young people from my mob to do great things and be proud of themselves and our culture.” Tyron’s talent is remarkable, his art speaks to you from a deeply spiritual place. He is certainly a name to watch out for.

Growing Housing Crisis
THE NSW Opposition has obtained documents under freedom of information laws that reveal the extent of social housing sales in the Hunter. Those documents reveal $19 million dollars’ worth of social housing sales in the past two years in the Hunter, despite the social housing waiting list ballooning out to over 60,000 applicants amid the escalating housing affordability crisis.
“Hunter residents face a 10 year wait to access social housing,” Shadow Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington said. “The [NSW] Government has privatised the management of the Hunter’s social housing properties and many residents fear the Government will sell off their homes next,” Ms Washington said. NSW needs 100,000 new social and affordable houses
over the next 20 years just to keep up with current levels of demand, according to community housing experts. Shadow Minister for Social Housing Tania Mihailuk said that the NSW Government should be focussing on increasing the supply of social and affordable housing options rather than selling off existing stock.
THERE are some simple things householders in Port Stephens can do around your home to prepare it for a bushfire. Preparation is a key factor and the NSW Rural Fire Service implores all residents, regardless of where they live, to prepare well beforehand. “It is essential that residents of Port Stephens have a bushfire plan because leaving it to the last minute could be too late,” Medowie
Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said. The five simple things you can do before and during the bushfire season are: 1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. This can stop the fire spreading to your home. 2. Mow grass and remove the cuttings. Have a cleared area around your home. 3. Remove material that can burn around your
home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture). 4. Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home. Burning embers can set your home on fire. 5. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home. Make sure you have a reliable source of water. The Fire Service also advises people to block up

HIDEAWAY Estate Salt Ash was not named after Australia’s most notorious Russian Spy but it very well could have been. You see, this is where Wally Clayton and his wife Peace spent their twilight years. Walter Seddon Clayton was a committed communist who gathered top secret documents from his Canberra contacts and passed them on to the Russians. Indeed he was the reason ASIO was formed. During World War Two, America and England shared classified secrets with Australia. That stopped after the US cracked the Russian secret code in
operation ‘Venona.’ They then discovered to their horror that leaks were coming from Australia. Clayton quickly became the obvious suspect but what to do with him? To admit in court that he was caught by cracking a secret code would alert the Russians so they tried other ways to break him. He was put under surveillance, intimidated and appeared before a Royal Commission. Nothing worked. Clayton and his wife fled to Port Stephens. Wally became a professional fisherman – and a good one. He was known locally as ‘The Snapper King’ but ASIO didn’t give up. They employed local fishermen to keep an eye on him lest he rendezvoused with a Soviet submarine.
Residents recall the Claytons spending their final years in quiet retirement at Salt Ash. Tanilba hardware store owner George Robinson remembers delivering goods to their home and Mallabula’s Dr Ross Devine tended the ailing Wally. After his death, a long lost tape recording surfaced in which Wally admitted his guilt to a fellow friend and Communist Party member. In the Lemon Tree Passage Library there sits a book, ‘Australian Spies and their Secrets’. It was donated by Peace Clayton and is signed by Wally. Peace played golf at Tanilba and spent her final years in a nursing home. Faithful to the end, she left her entire estate to the very much depleted Communist Party.
equipment to help develop their gross motor skills.” Supporting Kindergarten students with an older student is also important to the school, with Ms Davies saying, “The children have all met their buddy during orientation and they will be their contact support in the playground in the early weeks to help them settle in.” Offering advice to parents on how they can support their children to feel positive about school, Ms Davies said, “Parents can help children to build confidence and optimism by encouraging a habit of positive thinking.” “Asking children to tell you about the good things that happen each day helps develop this healthy habit.” Many schools use the Best Start Assessment, a
Department of Education initiative, to provide a diagnostic or ‘snapshot-intime’ record of the skills in numeracy and literacy that children have when they enter Kindergarten. The results of this assessment can aid teachers’ planning for the rest of the year. Medowie Christian School uses an Early Screening Inventory instead, and in addition, as explained by Ms Davies, “an interview process where we get to spend time with the child and their parents to get to know them on a more personal level.” More information about the Best Start Assessment is available for parents at: http://www.schools.nsw. edu.au/languagesupport/ documents/best_start/letter. php
School Offers Kindy Advice
By Heather SHARP
STARTING school can be an emotional time for children and their parents alike as it is another sign that they are growing up. So, what is it that parents can do to support their child to become school ready? Ms Sue Davies, Head of Primary at Medowie Christian School, spoke to Medowie News Of The Area about how they will introduce the 20 Kindergarten students to their school. Ms Davies started by saying, “Our Kindergarten teacher has already been preparing her classroom for weeks to get it looking colourful, exciting, warm, and friendly for the children.” “We have a special Kinderland area for the children to play in with a sandpit, cubby house and
areas where embers can enter the house, install metal fly screens on all windows and vents and install metal gutter guards . “Gas cylinders should be positioned on the side of the house with the relief valve pointing away from flammable
material. Garden beds should be kept away from the house and replace mulch with stones,” a spokesperson said. “Overhanging branches should be removed from power lines, ensure that that a fire tanker can access your property and keep a well-

MacKenzie targets the Nationals MAYOR Bruce MacKenzie has today challenged the leader of the NSW Nationals, John Barilaro, to have the courage of his convictions when it comes to regional council mergers. “Mr Barilaro yesterday stated that the Nats would no longer be taken for granted. Well I’m here to tell him that Port Stephens won’t be taken for granted either,” he said. “He stood in front of the media and talked about not accepting crumbs from the Liberal party’s table, then in the same breath, wouldn’t rule out support for Port Stephens/Newcastle merger. It sounds like he wants to be half pregnant to me.” “The facts are there for anyone and everyone to see.
Port Stephens is well and truly fit to stand alone. We are a highly successful, financially strong Council of 70,000 residents, with a community satisfaction rating amongst the highest in the state.” “It makes absolutely no sense to merge us with Newcastle. The NSW Liberal Party knows that and so do the Nationals.” “What I’m asking John Barilaro to do is to show some integrity and say it publicly. Does he represent regional NSW or does he represent his own personal political interests?” “I’m telling you now, Orange was just the beginning. The coalition can say goodbye to the former safe Liberal/ National seat of Port Stephens for the next decade if they stuff this up. It’s their call.”

These exams ensure students’ progress with their dancing, promote safe dance practices, encourage students to work hard for their goals, improve confidence, technique, flexibility and overall fitness. They also permit students to eventually become accredited teachers themselves one day, should they desire to do so. Stacey told News Of The Area, “The courses help us to stay fresh in our approach to teaching our young people.” “I have completed nine Jazz exams, and only have three remaining to be fully accredited,” she said. “Being accredited and continually updating my skills is so important in making me feel more confident as a teacher, that I am delivering the best and safest teaching practices to my students.” The next round of exams for Dance ‘n Dazzle students will take place in August this year.
“Classes are aimed at all fitness levels as you work to your ability but are exceptionally good for anyone having joint or muscle problems while exercising on land,” Debbie said. “Our business motto is not about weight loss or fitness – it’s to feel good, love what you do, and improve joint and muscle movement.” Classes at the Aquatic Centre are held on Monday at 11am for gentle aerobics, Tuesday 6pm for aqua fitness and Saturday 11am for aqua aerobics.
