Water Safety First! By Heather SHARP

WITH a scorching summer already in full swing, with temperatures in January expected to continue to soar, water safety is a top priority for the local swimming pools. To aid in ensuring that the safety of young children is prioritised, Belgravia Leisure, that run Lakeside (Raymond Terrace) Leisure Centre, Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness, have instigated a new safety program. Ms Tanya Brunckhorst, Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving told News Of The Area, “The Keep Watch wristband is for every children five and under.” “They will be given a wristband that is compulsory to wear so the lifesavers know they need to be within an arm’s reach of the parent or adult in charge of the child.”

Dr Gillespie said he thoroughly enjoyed working in the Health portfolio as Australia’s Assistant Health Minister, and looked forward to the challenge of new ministerial responsibilities. “Over the past year and half, I have very much enjoyed working with the various health stakeholders and my department in developing new policies to address the maldistribution of Australia’s health workforce. Some of those policies are now at the implementation stage, and others, are being developed in the context of a broader health workforce strategy,” Dr Gillespie said. “The creation of 26 new regional training hubs, three additional University Departments of Rural Health, the expansion of rural doctor

Governor-General His Excellency Sir Peter Cosgrove training initiatives, expansion of important regional and rural health initiatives including the dental service now being delivered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, regional health outreach services like the Heart of Australia Truck and my appointment of Australia’s First Rural Health Commissioner are all significant highlights.” “As the Minister with responsibility for Food Regulation and Health Safety, I was pleased to work with industry and public health stakeholders through the Health Food Partnership to expand and improve the Health Star Rating initiative, and improve the health content of

packaged foods through reformulation and portion control.” “Reforms and new initiatives in the National Industrial Chemicals Notification Scheme, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, the National Blood Authority and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency have also been an important part of my former role.” “I would also like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to Health Ministers Sussan Ley and Greg Hunt. Snak ‘N Rap Wraps up Breaking Bread

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE last Snak ‘N Rap for 2017 was a fantastic success, hosted this time at Mallabula skatepark. Snak ‘N Rap is a regular, free community event for young people. hosted by the Tilligerry Youth Community Action group (TYCA). TYCA is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation running youth programs in Port Stephens, with the goal of empowering young people to fulfil their potential. The final event for 2017 had a great turn out,

with over forty people in attendance who had tinue to support the Snak’N’Rap program.” Jack Baker, who attended the Tilly Snak ‘N Rap told News Of The Area, “It was so fun thank you so much to Snak’N’Rap for this event, I had a great time.” Jamie said, “I’d like to give a huge thank you to the Tilligerry community, and all the areas Snak’N’Rap has ran this past year.” The event wasn’t just about skating, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

There was music by DJ KiDream, spinning records, whilst painting old vinyls with the young people. The participants got to keep their handcrafted vinyl artwork. The folk from Up&Up were also on hand creating a street art piece for all to see. The skatepark was full with scooter riders showing off their talents and skills. Jamie Brewster and his team at TYCA are looking forward to a fresh year of new events in 2018, and meeting lots more new faces.

By Rachael VAUGHAN AFTER a long year of construction works at the revamped Medowie Sports and Business Centre, the management took the term to ‘break bread’ quite literally, and invited their neighbours to Christmas lunch. As a way of thanking their close by residential neighbours for ‘putting up with’ their renovations, their invited guests were treated to a delicious three course meal, prepared by the event catering arm of Sportz Cafe. The Medowie Sports and Business Centre is in the middle of a complete overhaul, transforming the

rundown ‘Medowie Squash Centre’ into a thriving sports and business hub for the ever growing Medowie community. So far we have welcomed the opening of Sportz Cafe, Munchkins creche, Plus Fitness 24/7 Gym, Medowie Family and Sports Physio, Dietitian, Nutritionist, Speech pathologist, Gymnastics, Yoga/Pilates, Karate, Dance Classes, Conference, events and meeting rooms. There are more developments on the horizon, including a world class swimming facility. Centre owner Colin Carter spoke to the attendants at the Christmas lunch, which included not only neighbours, but supporters of the development of the centre.

Colin told News Of The Area, “I thank our neighbours for supporting us as we create something really special for Medowie.” “It’s been a massive project, but one that we want to make sure we do in the right way so we make sure we are providing the best possible facility for Medowie.” “We are by no means finished, there are lots of exciting things to come, but we’ve reached the point where everything is looking fantastic, and we can see the end goal.” “We look forward to turning the soil for the Pool in the new year, as well as lots of other exciting developments for what we have no doubt is fast becoming an invaluable community asset,” he said.

Dear Miss AK,

People are not defined by a number . . . well, unless you are Kevin 07, Blink-182, James Bond 007, Ben Folds Five, The Fantastic Four . . . okay, some people are defined by numbers. But let’s not allow that to ruin a good argument. Most people are not defined by numbers, and you should not be defined by your ATAR. It may seem as though it is the be all and end all of life as you know it, but trust me, there are plenty of ways to skin a cat. Actually, don’t trust me on that one. I can think of only one way to skin a cat. Of course you are feeling disappointed at this point in time. Particularly when there are multiple media reports placing people with an ATAR of 99.85 on a pinnacle. What is even worse is when these high achievers are quoted as being devastated that they didn’t get the score they were hoping for. What the? To make you feel better, I took a quick survey of the people in my office, to see how their ATAR affected their lives. Here are their responses: “What’s an ATAR?” “At the end of the day it comes down to hard work and doing the monotonous, small things regularly. It is all about dedication and persistence.” (Picture several staff members sticking their fingers down their throats). “I have never, in my entire life, been asked what my HSC result was in any interview, promotion, or training course.” “Can you stop asking questions so we can close the building and go for a drink?” “I didn’t get into the course I wanted to, but when I look back on it, I’m pretty pleased, because I now have absolutely zero desire to be a psychologist.” (Having worked with this person, that outcome is indeed fortunate). So, Miss AK, fret not. With around one in three students failing to complete their studies within six years, there will be plenty of spots available. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
