New group for women to start By Heather SHARP IN a sign that even in a close knit community like Medowie, people are interested in forming new community groups with like-minded people, eight Medowie women gathered this weekend to organise such a group. The women are keen to expand to include others in Medowie and surrounding areas. Unlike how they view other groups in Medowie,

this group is after a hands on approach in a group that covers indoor and outdoor activities. Their idea is that it is based on a Women’s Shed idea. These community groups, which have been inspired by the original and highly successful Men’s Sheds operate in other localities such as Forster, Port Macquarie, Orange, and interstate in Victoria.

A collaboration between Engineers Australia and eight universities aims to encourage more women to pursue a career in engineering. This male dominated field, which often has a macho image problem, is seeking to reinvent itself and attract more women into its fold. Australian DJ duo NERVO has launched a new song and video clip as part of Made By Me, a collaborative project which aims to help address the gender disparity and skills shortage in the field. The video clip for People Grinnin’ ft The Child of Lov, features female engineers creating android versions of NERVO. It draws attention to how engineering applies to everyday life, beyond just roads and buildings, in a bid to attract more diverse students to the discipline. For local Medowie resident, Ms Marnie Coates, engineering which she studied at the University of Newcastle, was the right career choice for her. Ms Coates, who works as a Process Engineer in the water treatment industry told Medowie News Of The Area, “I was good at Maths and Science at school but also had a

passion for design like in woodwork and textiles.” “My careers advisor suggested I'd make a good engineer and encouraged me to apply for a scholarship. I got the scholarship and haven't looked back since.” Dr Alex Bannigan, Made By Me spokesperson and Women in Engineering Manager, UNSW Engineering, said, “The project highlights the farreaching career prospects of engineering in response to a real need for more women to participate in the field.” “When people think engineering they think about construction sites and hard hats, that perception puts a lot of people off.” “This campaign shows how engineering is actually a really diverse and creative career choice.” “It also offers strong employment prospects in a tough job market.” With so many women leaving the profession in their early career, changing degrees at university, or not even considering engineering as an option due to negative, sexist perceptions of the industry, Ms Coates understands the challenges females experience in the industry, but is also able to put it into perspective.

subjects for the HSC has been declining steadily, while in the engineering industry, Australia is currently faced with a severe talent shortage. In 2014-15 skilled migration supplied more engineers to the field than Australia’s education system did. When asked what advice Ms Coates would give to a woman considering entering the engineering profession, she replied, “Do it! Women think differently to men which means we contribute in a unique and valuable way.” “Engineering as a profession will only be at its best when men and women are equally represented in the office, on work sites and in the boardroom.”

Opportunity of a lifetime for Medowie young performers By Heather SHARP STAGE-SHOW spectacular and audience firm favourite, Hairspray, was recently showcased at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre from 15-17 July. In an endeavour to encourage local participation in the event, the promotors cast about 600 young people, aged between 9 and 21, for the dance scenes and general ensemble. A group of Medowie children were amongst those selected to perform in this once in a lifetime experience. To be selected as part of the ensemble, the prospective performers auditioned with Harvest Rain in December 2015. The Medowie contingent selected from this audition for the ensemble included Roshan Francke, Rhianna

Perry, Amelia Cochrane, and Skyla Conlon. Miss Skyla Conlon, age 10, told Medowie News Of The Area, “I enjoyed Hairspray very much.” “It was a great opportunity to make awesome new friends and to be in the same room as 600 wonderful people who all like the same thing as me, acting, singing and dancing.” They spent their April holidays attending a boot camp to prepare for the live stage shows. The young performers had the opportunity to meet the cast of the show too, with Miss Conlon saying, “I loved meeting the case and was amazed at how many people I knew who came to watch the show!” The selected performers were part of the mass ensemble for the Newcastle showing of Hairspray and

Mother to Skyla, Ms Samantha Conlon, told Medowie News of The Area, “The show was big, vibrant and really exciting.” “The kids had to design their own characters around guidelines allocated to the different groups and were in charge of choosing their own costumes to help build their characters.” It was not an easy show to perform in, and the young people had to demonstrate they were committed to it, by attending up to eight days of rehearsals, accumulating about 40 hours of practice. Across the three days the show was performed, the ensemble delivered four spectacular shows. Demonstrating the c o m m u n i t y- m i n d e d n e s s

Career support for violence survivors By Rachael VAUGHAN

IN Australia, on average, a woman is killed every week as a result of domestic violence. One in four children are exposed to domestic violence, a recognised form of child abuse. Domestic and family violence is the principle cause of homelessness for women and their children. In 2014, 20% of men

experienced domestic violence, so one in five men. These are frightening statistics, and only a few of the many reasons that prompted Medowie resident Katharine Foster to put together a program to help these men and women. In 2013, Katherine was participating in a domestic violence training program and found herself overwhelmed by the statistics

and case studies of the women included in this program. Ms Foster told News Of The Area, “I thought to myself, there must be something I can do to help these women, using my skills and experience.” “During the training, I had a lightbulb moment – I could help domestic violence survivors with their careers – careers counselling – to help them create or re-establish

their careers after leaving their domestic violence environment.” Ms Foster set about investigating, researching and planning. She was shocked to find Australia offered nothing similar for these women, and only one company worldwide appeared to offer anything even similar. Ms Foster approached that one company in

America, enquiring about the potential to partner with the organisation to bring the program to Australia, but was met with disinterest and a comment of ‘surely there are things like this there already’. “At that point in my research, I became determined to design and implement my own program in order to help these women,” Ms Foster said.

continue to be vigilant on illegal signs. "The campaign has set the groundwork for ongoing compliance of advertising signs, and we encourage people in the community to report illegal signs on roads to call Council's Rangers and Compliance Section on 4980 0255," he said. After nearly three years of planning and writing, Ms Foster has chosen Port Stephens to launch her program on 17 August, 2016. “My personal hope is that this program will empower adult survivors of domestic violence; that the community will embrace the program, that a national and eventually global rollout will occur so that survivors are empowered and liberated,” Ms Foster told News Of The Area.

impressive thirty years educating our children as a staff member and Director at the pre-school on Kindlebark Drive. This fantastic achievement was celebrated with fellow staff members, executives and parent committee representatives at their pre-

school meeting this week, with an especially creative cake by Medowie cake artist –Sheridan Hicks from ‘Cake Crime’. Michele spoke with News Of The Area about her time with the pre-school, and reflected on some of her experiences. Ms Ireland said, “I feel grateful to have shared my time at Medowie Community pre-school with such wonderful staff and children in this lovely town. I feel like I am part of the community fabric. In fact, most people are surprised to learn that I don’t actually live in Medowie, yet am so invested in the success of the pre-school and the children who pass through our doors. I love feeling like I am part of Medowie and know so many wonderful families.” Times have changed significantly in the thirty years Michelle has been part of the Medowie community pre-school. The paperwork requirements alone have completely changed the job for educators, The role of an early childhood educator has many facets that the parents and community may not be aware of – there is lesson planning,

programming, policy writing, training, funding applications, budgeting, business plans, reporting and so much more. Michele expressed that despite the rather significant increase in workload outside of the actual care of the children, the job is still wonderfully enjoyable and rewarding. Medowie Community Pre-school boasts an impressive record of continuity of staff, with several staff members close

behind Michele Ireland with their years of service at the same pre-school. Michele says that this fact is largely because of the wonderfully supportive environment at the preschool. The staff work well together, they are happy and motivated to ensure the smooth running of the pre-school, and their enjoyment of their work life is evident, and reflects positively on the outcomes for the children in their

Renee told News Of The Area, “I love Spirited Clothes because I don’t just shop ethically – I help save women from trafficking and a life of poverty.” Spirited Clothes is an Australian-based company with products ranging from pyjamas, scarves & bracelets. They work with women in India and the Philippines, where they aim to train and provide employment to women who are victims of slavery. Spirited Clothes have set up two sewing centres in India and one in the Philippines. Their main centre is in South India, where they are working with women who have come out of human trafficking. The girls are trained in how to sew and then given work with Spirited Clothes. The sewing centre in the Philippines is a new centre, and will be helping women from the local dumpsite to learn to sew and provide for their families. The sewing centres serve individual purposes, but across the board aim to free women from slavery or poverty and provide them with training and employment so that they may provide for themselves and their families. These women all get paid a living wage, and money is also put back into the community to help others get an education and increase their standard of living, breaking the cycle of poverty for generations to come. Spirited Clothes have also been able to fund a feeding program, providing meals for the children who live on the dumpsite. They hope to eventually expand to more countries, helping more people. All profits from their sales go straight back into the business, and helping women and their communities. Renee will have a stall of Spirited Clothes and jewellery at Medowie markets in August. Agent positive on area

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE days of having to explain to people where Medowie is, are seemingly coming to an end. Word is spreading about our little town, and people from far afield are interested in joining the ranks as residents. Whilst house prices are on a steady rise in Medowie, the value for money for property here far outweighs that of similar house prices in Sydney. Sydney’s prices, and therefore land and property value, may rise faster, but is it

worth it for what Medowie can offer residents with quality of life and lifestyle. If the big city isn’t your thing, then Medowie might just be. House prices are going up, but Medowie is still a lifestyle bargain. First home buyers can buy a house under $400,000 that is move in ready, you get value for money, and don’t have to sacrifice modern conveniences or lifestyle. Families from further afield are moving here, and retirees are flocking here to get away

from the hustle and bustle. Medowie is close enough to the airport to fly to see children and grandchildren, or close enough for family to come and visit. Young families and retirees are able to purchase properties that they wouldn’t have been able to afford in Newcastle or Sydney. We are a growing community and we have something to suit every demographical need. We have wonderful schools, we have all necessary amenities and we’re close to

the beaches and bigger town. Medowie real estate agent, Tiffany Jeffery, spoke to News Of The Area and said, ‘The interest from Sydney is phenomenal. People enquiring are astounded by what their money can buy them without having to forego anything.” Potential buyers from Sydney enquire about what properties in their price range include, and are always astounded by the difference to the big cities. “$700k plus in Sydney can buy them a three bedroom, one bath, or they can make

FUN: The young netballers participating in the Net Set Go initiative.

NETBALL

By Susan RIDDLE

IT was a very successful season for Mia Chrimes, Shannon Bohan and myself, with Medowie Netball Club’s future netballers in their first tier of Net Set Go.

With 22 players, of ages ranging from four to eight years old, we were kept busy integrating netball skills and fun activities for the afternoon sessions to ensure we were

accommodating for everyone, and their different levels of development. These young netball players started out the season playing active games that displayed the various skills used in netball, such as, catching, throwing, jumping, running and pivoting.

Follow up sessions further developed these skills with drills and tasks carefully disguised as fun games. There were always lots of giggles and smiles as they persevered to achieve the tasks presented to them. There were always lots of wayward balls, too! Towards the end of the program, some of the older players were able to move on to play short modified netball games together. This was always the most anticipated and exciting part of the sessions as these players were able to “…play real netball like the ‘big girls’ do on Saturdays!” We ended our program with short presentation where the players each received a medallion, to match the shirts and netballs they received at the start of the season. All the players displayed great enthusiasm and I look forward to coaching them again, next year, when some of those players will actually be playing Saturday netball. Thank you to all who participated and helped in making it happen.
