Clean Up finds All Sorts By Marian SAMPSON
WE all know that the drain is just for rain. However the consequences to the environment for those who fail to put their rubbish in the bin is massive. In a second clean up this year Sea Shelter volunteers picked through the rocks on the Nelson Bay breakwall and dove the marina collecting a massive amount of rubbish.
Sea Shelter was started by the team at Irukandji Shark and Ray encounters. It is Sea Shelters mission to educate and act through research, including the recording of fish numbers; rehabilitation which is the work that they conduct in removing waste from the waterways; rescuing sick and injured animals and rehabilitating them; and regenerating local environments such as the
sponge gardens. Port Stephens and the Hunter is a known marine ecological hotspot in Australia and Sea Shelter is making it their mission to maintain, assist in attenuation programs or regenerate the habitats already lost. Lia Pereira of Sea Shelter told News Of The Area, “The clean up collected in total 2196 pieces of litter, not including

of the NSW Rural Fire Rural took to it knowing that the situation could get out of hand very quickly. And then it did. In next to no time, the fire advice level increased from the “Advice” level to “Watch and Act” and then eventually “Emergency” as winds increased and took control of the fire. children unable to find a way home from school. Richardson Road had been closed initially between Medowie Road and Grahamstown Road, but then Medowie Road was closed between Ferodale Road in the north and Nelson Bay Road in the south. Not long after, the people of Nelson Bay and surrounds were cut off when Nelson Bay Road was closed at Paul’s Corner. Lemon Tree Passage Road followed shortly after, leaving even more people isolated. Once again, the local community came together in the face of crisis. Our firefighters were looked after with food and drink with donation after donation finding their way to men and women (and one
former Prime Minister) on the front line. Irrawang High School became an emergency evacuation centre taking in students from various schools around the area who were unable to make it home due to the road closures. The Salvation Army lept into action to feed the stranded students and teachers, and Hunter Valley Buses and Port Stephens Coaches eventually got them home safely when Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road were temporarily re-opened. With the help of several firefighting planes and helicopters, including the Boeing 737 Gaia air tanker, and the much calmer conditions, our firefighters were able to get the upper

Spectacular scenes at Pacific Dunes saw families able to shake off the worry of the spreading fire, and enjoy the excitement of watching these magnificent aircraft collect water from the ponds and waterways of the golf course to returning over and over to refill and head off again to douse the flames. Yes, there were some land property losses, but there are many more stories of near misses and of course the most important of all, no lives were lost. It was a tough situation for many, but once again, our community came through. Thank you to all our firefighters and support crew for all you do to keep us safe.

Good Faith or Compulsory Acquisition Mambo Wins By Marian SAMPSON
IT has been going on for way too long, but the 6 hectares of land sold by the NSW State Government in 2016 is now on its way back into community hands. Catherine Cusack MLC told the NSW parliament “The Berejiklian Government has identified an avenue in which to legally acquire the former Department of Education site. “The letter giving legally required Notice of Good Faith negotiations and compulsory acquisition has been sent to the land owner under section 10A of the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991. “Either way, through voluntary sale or compulsory acquisition, the land will be returned to public ownership where it belongs so we can protect it into the future, she said. Jaimie Abbott Liberal
Candidate for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “The Berejiklian Government has identified an avenue in which to legally acquire the former Department of Education site. The Government is now in the process of the required 6 month period already. It will now simply come down to a matter of time. “This should never have been sold, but I’m so glad we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. “Either way, through voluntary sale or compulsory acquisition, the land will be returned to public ownership where it belongs so we can protect it into the future.” Council and the community have lobbied to have the land returned to the public and to see this unique habitat preserved into the future. Abbott went on the say, “I really want to thank my fellow Port Stephens Councillors for coming together in bipartisan and supporting my motion

The team was successful in making it to the final rounds of the Premier’s Debating Challenge, and finished in the top eight schools in the Hunter Region. The team also made it to the final round against Grahamstown Public School in the Raymond Terrace Rotary Club Debating Competition. Every debate in the challenge is a one hour preparation debate. Teams do not know the topic or which side of the debate they are on until one hour before the debate starts. Once the preparation time is up, three speakers from each team take turns to speak, with a fourth silent speaker helping out during preparation and during the debate.
In the final, Grahamstown Public School and Raymond Terrace Public School debated the controversial topic “Australia Day should be celebrated on January 26”. The Raymond Terrace Public School team was crowned Regional Champions for 2018 after debating negative side. Debating Coach for Raymond Terrace Public School, Ms Emma Kelly, told News Of The Area, “We are so proud of the effort the students have put in over the last two terms, they have worked so hard.” “Congratulations team and thank you to all students who supported them by taking on the role of timekeeper or chairperson.”

This is a real win for people power in Port Stephens, which will protect a valuable ecologically diverse space into the future.
Carbon Neutral for the Port ENERGY Australia analysis[i] has shown that households throughout Port Stephens Council are leading the way in creating a better energy future and are 20 per cent more likely to choose carbon neutral electricity than the NSW state average. EnergyAustralia’s goal is to help one million Australian homes opt-in for carbon neutral electricity by 2020. Chief Customer Officer Chris Ryan said it was encouraging that so many Port Stephens Council residents have decided to play a part to help address climate change. “Port Stephens Council customers may not realise it, but they can opt-in to 100 per cent carbon neutral electricity at no extra cost. By opting-in, they’re supporting a range of projects that reduce or avoid carbon emissions here and overseas.” Chris said. “We launched our carbon neutral electricity program in late 2016 after customers told us they wanted to help address climate change, but in a way that’s simple and puts them in control.” “We’d love to see as many NSW households as
possible join our carbon neutral movement. It’s hassle-free and a costeffective way of supporting the environment with a few clicks of the mouse.” “In the spirit of friendly competition, the race is now on for Port Stephens Council to be the frontrunner in NSW.” Chris said. Australian households of all shapes and sizes in Port Stephens Council making the decision to go carbon neutral sets a strong example for the rest of NSW to offset the carbon emissions from their home electricity use. EnergyAustralia purchases carbon offset units in climate action projects such as bushfire management in Australia’s outback, native forest regrowth and renewable projects in developing countries. 100 per cent carbon neutral electricity is available to EnergyAustralia’s residential electricity customers. New customers can also opt-in when setting up their account and when six months rolls around EnergyAustralia will automatically put them on the program. Customers can find out more and opt-in by visiting energyaustralia. com.au/go-neutral.

Meeting Dogman & Rabbitgirl By Marian SAMPSON
THE Table of Love at Soldiers Point Marina is causing quite a stir locally and the Probus Club of Fingal Bay chose to check it out on a recent outing. The delightful Table of Love is a bronze sculpture of a table presided over by Dogman and Rabbitgirl, which is situated on the dock at Soldiers Point Marina adjacent to the Deck Cafe.
No-one was surprised when a few members of the Walking for Pleasure group from Fingal Bay Probus Club enjoyed the company of Dogman and Rabbitgirl, recently as they recovered from their exertions. They also enjoyed some coffee and stimulating conversation. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Friendship, fellowship and fun is what Probus Clubs are all about and the outing and setting
created a perfect avenue for friendship and fun. She believes that this addition to the sculptures at Soldiers Point Marina creates a great opportunity, whether you sit there with strangers, or on your own it is a welcome chance for company and possibly onesided conversation. Also on the marina are a range of other sculptures to be enjoyed, including Bubble and Squeak the dolphins, a cheeky pelican
with a catch and some dancing brolgas. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets at 9.30am on the
second Monday of each month at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. New members and visitors are always welcome
to enjoy a variety of events such as barbecues, mahjong, dining out and morning teas, as well as guest speakers at every meeting.

Dear News Of The Area,
THE Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group welcomes the announcement from Catherine Cusack in the NSW Parliament on Wednesday night that proceedings have begun for a compulsory buy back of Mambo Wetlands, sold in June, 2016. The community of Port Stephens has been campaigning for this outcome for over two years and finally we have some action. Timing is everything in politics and of course we should know the final outcome just before the NSW State election in March. Thank you to everyone who has signed a petition, sent a letter, attended a meeting, made a phone call or sent an email on this issue. Your efforts and determination have finally paid off and the community thanks you. We also thank Port Stephens Council for their unwavering support, from their original submission to the State Government advocating that the sale not go ahead in 2016, to their unanimous decision in January this year to appeal to the State government for a buy back. Thank you to Councillor Abbott for bringing this matter before Council and to Catherine Cusack for pursuing the matter with the NSW Government. We would also like to thank our local MP Kate Washington for her sustained efforts and support of an issue she knew the community felt so strongly about. The Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group will continue to pursue issues around the original sale in 2016. Ms Brown said the Mambo Group is still waiting for documentation from the NSW Planning Department surrounding the auction held in 2016. This will be finalised in late December. We continue to ask the government about a commitment made in 2017 by Ms Cusack to a local Landcare Group, that she would ensure that government processes that allowed this sale to take place, would be reviewed. There are still many questions to be answered around the original sale, but for now we appear to be on the path towards having Mambo back in public ownership. Congratulations to the Port Stephens community on a job well done. Kathy Brown, Secretary, Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group
Dear Jasminda,
I don’t feel comfortable hugging casual acquaintances, or cheek kissing for that matter, but at this time of year everyone from the neighbour to the fruit and veg delivery man seems to move in for a hug and kiss. What is the correct etiquette and is there any way to resist in a non-offensive way? Mrs HK, Lemon Tree Passage Dear Mrs HK
Changing of the Guard at Chamber
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Tomaree Business Chamber is moving forward after the successes of the year. They have not only won a Hunter Business Chamber Award under the leadership of local business woman and Port Stephens Woman of the Year Leah Anderson but have delivered some unique outcomes. These include the Nelson Bay Civic Pride Working Bee day which has seen much of the Nelson Bay township revitalised and refreshed with nicely planted garden beds, new coat of paint, and the addition of gates in unsightly alleys.
The Chamber is also responsible for the delivery of Tastes at the Bay and business networking events. Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “Deb O’Neil will bring a wealth of knowledge with her Real Estate background, she knows a lot about the property market and knows a lot of people in this town and her business is right in the heart of Nelson Bay, while Amy Goodwin is an accountant at Buckley Richardson, who will bring a wealth of knowledge to the Finance Director role.” The new faces joining Rob Reeve of Reeve Law,
Geoff Brown of Radio Bay FM, Mel Turner of Moonshadow TQC Cruises, Gary Millard of Portside Building Design and Peter North will guide the organisation’s activities into 2019. “Also new to the board Marcella Hill who is enthusiastic, and works in the heart of Nelson Bay and again she will bring great ideas and knowledge to the board.” I’m very excited to have our new team,” she said. The Chamber is currently working on a number of initiatives including an exciting project which if successful will see an education hub in the centre of Nelson Bay.

YOU have a fruit and veg delivery man? You don’t have to trawl through supermarkets for bruised and battered oranges from California or avocados that are already smashed due to over-squeezing, or rockmelon that’s as hard as a . . . well, hard as a rock, obviously. Hell, I’d not only accept a kiss from the delivery man, I’d invite him in for some fruit salad and a mojito with lime zest and mint sprigs straight from his delivery box. You are one lucky woman, Mrs HK. Now, back to the hugs and kisses. I understand what you are saying. Some people feel very comfortable bestowing lingering kisses and great big sweaty bear hugs to all and sundry. Others prefer the more genteel air kiss, or they feign cultural superiority by giving attention to both cheeks, which is trés chic, trés tendance, trés à la mode (look it up, Mrs HK). Slightly more uncomfortable situations arise when you offer your right cheek (as is accepted protocol, I might add) and the person opposite misjudges or doesn’t know basic etiquette and you end up pashing your orthodontist. It is terribly uncomfortable, particularly if you are there for root canal therapy. I was extremely unnerved by my neighbour’s ‘welcome to the hood’ greeting until he assured me he was Maori. Now I can hongi like a professional (look it up, Mrs HK). The main issue with the hug/kiss thing is when people want to hug and kiss your kids. This is completely unacceptable. Kids should never be pressured to kiss or hug Uncle Jim or Aunty Gladys or Harold down the road, or Santa for that matter. If you are the kissee (I made up that word, Mrs HK, so don’t try to look it up) and the kisser moves in for a slobbery greeting, offer your hand instead and give a firm handshake (though not as firm as Mark Latham). Otherwise a few strong pats on the back can be enough to state your position. Remember, you are in control. If they still don’t get the hint, cross your arms in front of you and say, ‘Back off, you predatory worm, you segmented parasitic creature belonging to phylum Annelida and subclass Hirudinea.’ That should be understood in any language. Asian Inspiration
Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s Asian Inspired Exhibition
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Artists at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre are excited to present a unique cultural exhibition depicting the aspects and diversity of the Asian World which is on display until 18 December. In a second exhibition is a veritable treasure trove of artistic delights themed around which will be on display until 21 December. If you are looking for perfect and unique stocking stuffers this year the Arts
Centre has a plentiful supply of fun and fantastic local handmade goods. The Centre has a great range of items suitable for all ages, and is a great place to do your Christmas gift shopping. Diane Baillie is the Centre’s current feature artist. Diane has been painting since 1990 and was a member of Liverpool Art Society for several years. She also did life drawing at the Powerhouse Gallery at Casula, and is largely selftaught but participates in
workshops of interest. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Since moving to Nelson bay on retirement, Diane has been painting on a regular basis with the Monday Painting Group of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.” After spending a month in Japan, Diane’s love of Oriental Arts has been rekindled. She works mostly in watercolours and pen, and gives an aged finish to her works.
Cancer when her effervescent and infectiously happy sister, Annie, was herself diagnosed with this terrible disease. Annie, a teacher at Tanilba Bay Public School, is currently on leave, and battling with strength and courage, supported by a
mighty team around her. Annie’s artist sister Felicity told News Of The Area, “Some days are lifechanging, and not in a good way, sometimes a simple medical procedure brings to light that which has been hidden.”
Fine Art for a Grand Cause By Rachael VAUGHAN
A PASSIONATE Port Stephens artist has donated prints of a very special artwork for a wonderful cause. Felicity Cocuzzoli was moved to contribute to raising awareness of Ovarian
q Diane Baillie with some of the Oriental inspired artworks. “This happened recently to my beautiful sister, and she is far from alone.” The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation identifies that on average, one in four Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia every day. Currently, the five year survival rate for Australian women with ovarian cancer is 43%.
q The special artwork ‘Hope’.
In comparison, the five year survival rate for breast cancer is 90%. Felicity said, “In an effort to make some sort of a difference I created her a picture, inspired by the ethereal photography of Rod Waddington.” “Whilst drawing, my mind imagined the vast numbers of other women who were facing the fight of their lives; as well as those who love them, and those who have lost women they love, and the idea for raising funds for research from this image grew.” Felicity asked Annie to name the artwork, and her immediate response was ‘Hope’. ‘Hope’ is for everyone who has been touched by women’s cancer, which strikes at the core of femininity; for women struggling through treatment and for those who love these women. Each print has been reproduced on archival
quality fine art paper, and costs less than a floral delivery. Felicity’s goal is to raise $2000 in 12 months for Ovarian Cancer Australia, through the sale of fine art prints. You can purchase these fine art prints for $50 (A4) and $75 (A3) by visiting https://give.everydayhero. com/au/hope-fine-artprints-for-women-s-cancer. Felicity added a final message on Annie’s behalf, and told told News Of The Area, “Anne is passionate about sharing her experience to highlight the importance of women taking time to care for themselves.” “We can never be too busy to get checked and take action if we have any concerns about our health.” “If not for ourselves, we owe it to our partners, our children and all those who love us.”

Finishing in 4th position they were up against minor premier’s University for a spot in the grand final. The opening stages were extremely intense with Kayla Campbell damaging the opposition with strong defence and hard running. University’s attack was sharp, scoring the first try and converting to lead 6/0 at halftime. Karuah adjusted their defence and started the second half with determined running from Ashley Bills, Casey O’Bryan and Jess Neilson. Ebony Oakley capitalised on an opportunity scoring from dummy half taking the score to 6-4. An inspirational effort from Rooette’s captain Lacey Beneke playing with a pre-existing injury went close to scoring however copped a heavy head injury but managed to drag herself off the field giving the Rooette’s an opportunity to attack University’s line in the dying stages. Quick-witted Tamara Smith snuck over the try line to score a try moments before the final buzzer sounded to see the Rooette’s win 8-6 to earn

PORT Stephens Family History Society was saddened recently by the news that one of their longest serving stalwarts had passed away. Lorraine Cottom (1935 - 2018) was a dedicated member and filled the role of President for ten years. She also served on Port Stephens Council’s Heritage Committee. The Society has published some ten books, the most well known being ‘A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula’ (1996). It has been in print for over 20 years, selling 1100 copies in two editions and will soon be available as a CD. Apart from her leadership and initiative, Lorraine will be best remembered for her efforts in bringing to life a book about an almost forgotten wartime camp at Bob’s Farm. It was here that some 600 Timorese were resettled after fleeing the invading Japanese in 1943. In tandem with Yvonne Fraser, Lorraine provided important research material for the book and even travelled to Victoria to interview a 92 year old nurse who had worked at the camp. ‘Bob’s Farm Cadre Camp; Refugees from Timor to Port Stephens during World War II’ was the result of their efforts. Lorraine had been in poor health for several years. Current President, Denise Gaudion praised Lorraine’s contribution over such a long time, “Her positive attitude, leadership and dedication will be remembered by all of us.” “It’s a shame that she is not still with us to help put together our new book on historic Tanilba House,” she said.

SEND your questions to Denise, care of media@ newsofthearea.com.au and include your, name and suburb. Dear Denise,
What checks should be completed for potential tenants? DT Twelve Mile Creek EVERYONE’S heard the horror stories of tenants gone bad! Trashing properties, not paying rent and sometimes disappearing leaving damage plus a lot of money owing in rent. Thankfully this is quite rare, but if you are a landlord, it is imperative that your property manager is completing an array of checks on tenants applying to rent your property. From the first inspection of the property the assessment regarding their suitability will commence. How are they to deal with, how are they presented, what are they saying about the reason for moving? Once an application is made, an assessment of all the information within it will commence. All referees should be contacted, whether personal or past landlords/ agencies. Financials of course need to be assessed to ensure the potential tenants can afford to pay the rent amount being asked. There are also databases available to real estate agencies which contains information on any tenants with previous negative behavior and/or payment history. This is why when you see tenants advertising on social media that they are seeking a rental property “privately” (without a real estate agency) this can definitely be a red flag to be wary of. Assessing potential tenants is worth being particular about. A bit of detail at the start can potentially save you thousands down the track.
