The Lions Club of Australia hosts the yearly completion to assist young people to improve their skills before entering the workforce or other endeavours.

A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its winners.

A friendly neighbourhood watch.

Eleven families were lined up as early as Wednesday last week. for the Saturday 10am official release time.

A large number of further families joined them on the final night, and early morning, before the release, The McCloy group put on a fine morning for all the families and buyers waiting, with a jumping castle and complimentary BBQ. They showed their community spirit by supporting the Medowie Lions Club with a generous donation and supplies to run the BBQ

The final aspect of the full runway extension involves extending the northwest runway with works ongoing and expected to be finished in mid 2017.

The first of the total 72 F-35A aircraft will arrive in Australia in 2018 with its first squadron, Number 3 Squadron at Williamtown, operational in 2021. All 72 aircraft are expected to be fully operational by 2023.

Brickfest a big hit

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE weather quite literally held out until the last minute for the Wirreanda Public School Brickfest, ensuring they had a steady crowd all day.

The displays delighted young and old alike with popular characters, themes and set ups to suit all ages groups.

Spread over both halls at Wirreanda Public school, countless talented Lego artists displayed their creations, and patiently answered questions from the public.

Wirreanda P&C vicepresident and fundraising coordinator, Belinda Beasley, told News Of The Area, “It was a fantastic day, and great to see so many people, adults and children, come along and marvel at the wonderful Lego displays.”

There was also a free-play

Lego station for everyone to get in and try out some new found ideas.

Wirreanda P&C were out in full fundraising force, full of community spirit, and provided a fully stocked cakes and treats table, raising funds for the school.

“Storage King at Raymond Terrace donated some amazing raffle prizes that impressed ticket holders, and must be thanked for their contribution.”

Hennessy Coffee were again spotted at yet another local event to benefit a community endeavour – donating money from all their sales back to Wirreanda Public School, and making sure the parents had one of the best coffees in town to enjoy the show with.

Special mention must go to Rainbow Bricks LUG for displaying their brilliant creations for the day, and Williamtown Rotary for including Wirreanda P&C in the running of the day.

Bush Fire danger period begins

SATURDAY marks the official start of the state-wide statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is urging Lower Hunter residents to prepare for the fire season now.

While 1 October is the official commencement of the 2016 bush fire season, some areas have already commenced their danger period due to continuing dry conditions.

Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins advised News Of The Area that the 2016 statutory Fire Danger Period commences on 1 October.

Residents should take the opportunity to prepare for the bush fire season.

NSW RFS Superintendent Jayson McKellar is urging residents to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan and ensure all members of the household know what to do on days of increased fire danger and if their home is threatened by fire.

Residents should prepare their property by removing flammable materials from their yards, clearing gutters of leaves, checking hoses and, where appropriate, conducting hazard reduction activities.

“While it is important to continue hazard reduction we have all seen the devastation that bush fires can bring to a community, so I strongly urge people to exercise caution when carrying out these activities,” Superintendent McKellar said.

Community bands together Kindness has to help new resident

By Rachael VAUGHAN ON Saturday, a call went out on social media about a missing horse.

Maxine Harries horse had gone missing from their property, and despite their extensive searching, the horse had not been found.

Maxine and her family are new to Medowie, and

were shocked and delighted with the response to their plight by concerned locals.

Michelle Chrimes, one of the volunteers who assisted with the search for the missing horse, told News Of The Area, “My daughter Mia and I went out looking, as well as four wheel drivers, quad bike riders – it was lovely when the horse was

found safely, we’d happily help anyone in the same position.”

The horse had spent the night in the bush in Medowie State Forest, and was found Sunday afternoon by walkers looking for her.

By Rachael VAUGHAN PREGNANT mother, Melissa Croft contacted News Of The Area to share a random act of kindness with the community – yet another example of the wonderful social fabric in Medowie.

Melissa is currently pregnant with her second child, and is suffering for the second time with a severe type of morning sickness called ‘Hyperemesis Gravidarum.’

“This illness has me bed ridden most of the day and to go anywhere outside of the house is a huge emotional battle for me as I suffer from tremendous unrelenting side effects,” Melissa told News Of The Area.

During the week, Melissa ventured to Woolworth’s

Medowie to attempt a small shop, all the while battling her condition.

It wasn’t until she had put through her groceries at the checkout that Melissa realised she couldn’t find her keycard.

Feeling her symptoms rapidly increase, Melissa excused herself and explained that she would return shortly.

Once at home, Melissa phoned the store and asked how she could pay for the groceries, which included dinner for that night for herself and her young daughter.

The employee on the phone said her only way around it was to purchase an e-gift card online and then come back into the store.

“I don’t really expect people to understand this sickness unless they have lived it - I attempted to explain my tears and that I was pregnant and suffering greatly,” Melissa said.

Melissa told News Of The Area that a lovely staff member treated her very kindly, stating that she knew how she felt and asked her to sit down.

The staff member then returned with her groceries, having paid for them in full, telling her not to worry and to go home and rest.

“If this isn’t a beautiful random act of kindness, then I don’t know what is,” Melissa told News Of The Area.

Melissa has since spent time in hospital with her condition, but has plans to go back and find the staff member to thank her and return her kind favour.

Police use down time to speak to community

PORT Stephens LAC Police Officers this week came to Medowie to speak with residents, bringing with them their mobile police unit to take down reports of their concerns.

Police representatives were alerted to many concerns of Medowie residents during last month’s community Police forum, but reported to News Of the Area that these reports are still yet to be made consistently through the necessary channels.

“We are getting reports from Medowie, but the numbers just aren’t matching

the number of issues we are hearing about through unofficial channels,” A spokesperson for Port Stephens LAC said.

Police found themselves with a quieter than normal afternoon last Wednesday, so decided to use it to gather information in the community.

They posted an announcement on their facebook page that they would spend the afternoon in Medowie speaking to residents.

Despite online complaints that the warning was not sufficient, and that the day and time was not conducive to working residents, Police

representatives spoke to over 30 members of our community about their concerns and received some valuable information.

News Of The Area thank Port Stephens Police for the invaluable use of their time, and hope that they will consider another planned visit soon.

In the meantime, residents are again encouraged to report crime in Medowie through the appropriate channels.

Williamtown Blood Challenge Coordinator, Mr Samuel Hays said Williamtown’s contribution to the Blood Challenge is making a real difference: “Last year the Williamtown community helped save 5016 lives by its donations and I am pleased to say that we are on track to save more lives in 2016.”

Mr Hays went on to say that Blood Challenge participants have also answered the call to contribute to the growing demand for donations of other blood products: “In addition to standard blood donations, plasma donations by Williamtown volunteers have been critical as the stock requirement for this product continues to increase by 10% per annum in response to

Dear News Of The Area, RECENTLY, I was tucking into a steak sandwich at the Bull N Bush when I got to talking to one of the staff. She compared Medowie to an extended family and said that the place has a certain ‘magic touch” that makes people feel included and looked out for.

I moved to Medowie late last year, in need of a tree change and sick of the close-quarters, shoulder-rubbing city. I bought a place on the western side of town and it didn’t take long to get used to country living.

I quickly realised that Medowie does indeed have a certain quality which might attract a screenwriter or film maker who was looking for not just a quirky little country town but also a certain state of mind. Someone who was making a movie about a unique place populated by unique people, like “Local Hero” or “Fargo”; a place which stamps it’s own authority on itself.

Medowie has no police station, no town square, no secular high school, and not even much of a main street. Not for Medowie the broad boulevardes of, say, Bathurst or Wangaratta.

This lack of public focus is unusual for an Australian country town, to say the least. Medowie seems to have just

happened; someone just wandered into the paperbark and eucalyptus and said, “Let’s build here!”.

And the people that followed are folks I’ve come to love and admire.

The first Medowians to cross my path were, not surprisingly, tradies.

I’ve been delighted and slightly humbled by the great guys at the hardware store (onya, Chris!!) who not only sold me what I needed but also came around and helped me install it. I’ve been moved almost to tears by fantastic neighbours who made me feel more than welcome in the ‘hood and by the wonderful teenagers at Coles and Woolies, who seemed to have bypass the lethargy and “meh” of adolescence and greet me with courtesy and bright eyes, always ready to help.

Oh, and let’s not forget the great guys at the Bull N Bush Bistro who are always cheerful, despite being sometimes overwhelmed (or as they would say, “flogged”) by requests for the daily special.

And the wildlife! Twelve eastern greys flopped onto my lawn this arvo, with joeys poking out of pouches. Squadrons of beautiful parrots (and those darned ducks!!) cirlced overhead as I kept looking for a koala that still hasn’t appeared.

After I finished my steak sandwich, I was on my way out of the pub when one of the bistro ladies said, “Welcome Home!”

Well, here I am.

ON 26 April 2016, Senior Australian Defence Force Officer - RAAF Base Williamtown, Air Commodore Craig Heap CSC, was proud to be presented with the 2015 Australian Red Cross Blood Challenge Regional Trophy on behalf of RAAF Base Williamtown donor participants.

The award was presented in recognition of the Base achieving the ‘highest number of blood donations in the Newcastle region’ last year and acknowledged the combined efforts of RAAF Base Williamtown community blood donors (including personnel, APS staff members, contractors and family members).

Air Commodore Heap said that it was an honour to receive the award on behalf of the Williamtown community: ‘This award is a clear reflection of the self-less dedication of our community to serve, protect and care for others. Volunteering to give blood, to save lives, is serving a community in need and I am proud of RAAF Base Williamtown’s willingness to serve in this capacity.”

Following the community’s success, The Australian Red Cross Blood Service also recognised the strong commitment and significant support of the RAAF Base Williamtown community by ‘doubling’ its donor mobile visits

Newcastle Knights High Performance

Harry has been selected in the Newcastle Representative team for the past two years.

HARRY Fraser may be a name you hear in future NRL games, so remember the name.

Harry is a keen rugby league player and is thirteen years old.

He has been selected in the Newcastle Representative team for the past two years.

This year Harry was also picked for the Newcastle Knights High Performance Unit and is currently waiting

to see if he’ll be selected in the Chargers (Junior Knights) which will be announced shortly.

The Newcastle Knights High Performance Unit is designed to identify, develop and nurture the best junior players and maximise their opportunity to progress from the Knights Junior program to the Knights Senior program.

The high performance program will also include elements of; specialised

skill development, strength and conditioning programs, nutritional development, career development, game analysis skills, personal wellbeing program and football IQ development.

The Fraser Family also have three other boys who also play league and the older three were in the Nelson Bay touch rep teams for the past three years.
