Young Quilter Impresses the Judges… TWICE
BY JENNY BAXTER
BY HEATHER SHARP WHAT many experienced quilters hope to achieve in a lifetime, Scarlett Lewis has already done so at the age of 7. The Wirreanda Public School, Year 2 student has recently been awarded prizes in two separate quilt shows for the same quilt which was self-designed, I Love Sydney. Asked what she likes about quilting, Scarlett told Medowie News Of The Area, “I like it because I can calm myself down, it gets me thinking and picking the fabric is my favourite part.” The motivation for the design came in 2015, when Scarlett and her mother walked outside of a quilt competition and saw a beautiful rainbow over the Harbour Bridge. WITH the federal election campaign finally drawing to a close, both major parties are looking to win over voters in the seat of Paterson by making new promises. Meryl Swanson, Labor candidate, teamed up with Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Tanya Plibersek, to meet with local community leaders and discuss plans to tackle the youth unemployment in the Paterson electorate area. Ms Swanson said, “Youth unemployment in the Hunter is now at a disastrous 18.9%. That’s nearly twice the state average.” Ms Swanson was on hand at Maitland Youth Express to announce that, if elected, she will establish and chair a Paterson Youth Employment Roundtable with the aim of working towards practical solutions to solve the challenge of youth unemployment in the local community.

The Roundtable will aim to bring together employment, education, training and youth employment services from across the region. It will meet half yearly and work on plans and initiatives to promote job growth and opportunities for young people in the area. “Tackling youth unemployment and ensuring we have effective, wellfunded services will be a key priority for me if I’m chosen to represent our region,” Ms Swanson said. Ms Plibersek said, “Labor is committed to providing a better future for our kids when they leave school.” “Mr Turnbull likes to talk about the new economy and innovation.” “But you can’t have innovation without education,” she said. “All the Liberals have done is slash funding from TAFE, apprenticeships, and schools.

MENTION the topic ‘Sport in America’ and it’s highly likely the conversation will eventually circle onto cheerleading. As iconic to American sport as the games of gridiron and basketball, cheerleading has become as much a feature of the US sporting experience as the games themselves. Yet one Medowie teenager has been taking on the Americans at their own game and been teaching them a thing or two in the process. Georgia Almond, a year 7 student at Irrawang High School, recently returned from the Global Dance and Cheer Games, held between 10-13 June in Hawaii. As part of the 50-person squad from MC Planet
Warabrook Dance in Newcastle, the 12 year old was an integral part of the group’s performance, competing in two levels – junior and senior. In the level 1 category, for up to 14 year olds, Georgia’s squad of 28 were crowned GRAND CHAMPIONS, whilst placing second in the Level 2 category, for under 18 year olds. The decisive margin was a mere 0.4 of a point. Georgia has been dancing for six years, adding cheerleading to her repertoire three years ago. The Global Dance and Cheer Games saw teams from New Zealand, USA, Japan, China, Mexico and Australia, compete in the invitation-only event across the three days.
PORT Stephens’ Aquatic Centres will undergo essential maintenance works over the colder months to ensure the facilities are operating at optimum levels when crowds dive into the summer season. Lakeside, Tilligerry and Tomaree Aquatic centres will be closed at various times during June, July and August in a staggered schedule to ensure at least one facility is available to accommodate year-round pool users. The outdoor pool at Lakeside is first in line and will be closed from Monday 27 June, until Sunday 24 July. Ian Crawford, Council’s Contract and Services Coordinator, said while the works at all three centres are routine, people would notice the activity at Lakeside. “The aquatic centres at Port Stephens are well-used and as with any asset, they require a little TLC to keep them at the standard our community expects,” he said. “The scope of work generally involves replacement and re-grouting of tiles, cleaning the pool floor, painting, essential plant maintenance and general maintenance. “This year we will be undertaking some work on the outdoor pool infrastructure at Lakeside. The process will require excavation, but there’s nothing people should be concerned about as these works are part of the regular maintenance schedule. “The finished product will really help maximise the quality of water for pool users when the centre re-opens.” Mr Crawford said Port Stephens Aquatic Centre members could visit alternative pools while their favourite centre was closed. “We are mindful that people use the year-round aquatic facilities in Port Stephens for a range of reasons, so the team has taken great care with the scheduling of these essential works to try and minimise disruption,” he said. “We thank the community in advance for their understanding and cooperation during this period.” Timetable for closures: • Lakeside Leisure Centre: Outdoor pool closed 27 June to 24 July; indoor pool: closed 4 July to 17 July • Tilligerry Aquatic Centre: Closed 4 July to 28 August

FROM Page 1 this became the design inspiration for the quilt submitted this year to both the Quilter’s Companion and Quilt NSW competitions. For the first competition, Quilter’s Companion, Scarlett came second in the Under 35 designer competition and among her prizes was a Brother sewing machine, fabric, a quilt pattern and a 12 month magazine subscription. For her recent entry to Quilt NSW, which had a total of 390 entrants, Scarlett came first in the junior category and won $300 worth of fabric and a free valuation of the quilt. The Quilt NSW show is the official show of the premier quilting association (formerly NSW Quilters’ Guild) and is held annually. Scarlett told Medowie News Of The Area, “I first started sewing when I was five, that’s when I made my first quilt by myself.” Her mother, an experienced and award winning quilter who teaches quilting classes added, “Scarlett usually comes down to my studio when I am preparing to teach and she asks, ‘What are you teaching the ladies? You need to show me.’ So, when she is interested and keen she does some great sewing.”
Baiting Feral Bunnies
IN an effort to protect and conserve local flora and fauna, Port Stephens Council will be undertaking a feral rabbit control program on public land across the Local Government Area. Commencing on Monday 27 June, Natural Resources staff will establish baiting stations across a range of sports grounds and reserves. Port Stephens Council’s Coordinator of Natural Resources, Les Seddon said that the program was aimed at limiting the negative impact feral rabbits have on the local ecosystem.

Greens Concerned Over New enHealth Advisory Levels THE Greens are concerned at the new enHealth safe advisory levels for PFOS/PFHxS and PFOA, released today. enHealth say the interim levels are based on the 2008 European Food Safety Authority’s Tolerable Daily Intake values for PFOS and PFOA. enHealth have reiterated that locals living in areas with ‘potentially contaminated water bodies’ not to eat fish, prawns or wild oysters, not to drink or prepare with bore water, not to eat
backyard eggs and not to drink milk from grazing cows or goats. Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “The Greens note with serious concern the newly advised ‘safe levels’ of PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS for contaminated sites around NSW. “This year the US EPA advised safe drinking levels for water with a combined concentration of PFOA and PFOS over 0.07 micrograms per litre and the Greens want the investigation area
in Williamtown, the ‘Red Zone’, to be redrawn in light of that. “Off the back of the US EPA decision, which was a very responsible decision, now the federal authorities have gone the other direction. “Increasing the safe advisory levels by this much will relegate many affected residents and workers to a position where they cannot receive help. “I have already spoken to residents who are utterly distressed and dismayed by this news. This is a very cruel blow. “It is unclear why controversial advisory levels adopted by the European Food and Safety Authority in 2008 have been recommended for use, rather than the recently released US Environmental Protection Agency levels.
FROM Page 1 “Our young people deserve so much better.” Meanwhile, Liberal candidate, Karen Howard, has concentrated efforts on securing safer communities by announcing a re-elected Turnbull Government would provide a further $120,000 for CCTV equipment in Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay. This funding would form part of the Coalition’s $40 million Safer Communities Fund. Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan, said, “The Coalition has now committed more than $100 million purely to assist local communities in delivering strategies to address crime and anti-social behaviour.” It remains to be seen whether any of the funding will extend specifically to the News Of the Area local readership areas, such as Medowie, Williamtown and Salt Ash.

Offshore Fish Farm Debate Continues By Dave BRAZIER
THE proposed Offshore Fish Farm which is set to be a joint venture between NSW DPI and Tasmanianbased Huon Aquaculture Providence Bay to some might seem a feasible idea. Given that 70 to 80% of our Seafood is imported, one would think such a venture would be welcomed. Whilst the proposal has economical merit, its proposed location in the middle of the ‘Humpback Highway’ and it’s amended size has some of the community questioning elements of the development. The original proposal was to utilise the now defunct Pieces Aquaculture Farm just off Hawks Nest, but now with a push to expand not only the size of the site, but also the size of the pens used to house the fish has been met with a level of concern by some objectors to the proposal. Ronnie and Warwick Nichols

from Tea Gardens are less than impressed with the latest proposals which they say could have significant impact on the use of the area by whales, dolphins, seals and other aquatic creatures. Speaking with News Of The Area, Ronnie Nichols said, “It is an Australia wide problem that small communities are being asked to suffer ongoing development pressures and processes whereby ‘state significance’ versus ‘unreasonable impact’ are the guidelines.” “The time has come to move away from the acceptance of loss as a companion to progress, particularly where loss of species and depleted biodiversity are the outcomes deemed acceptable,” she said. Concerning elements of the proposal for Ronnie and Warwick include the fact that whilst the operation is now planned to be moved to between 7 and 9 kilometres offshore, the proposed
size of the pens has nearly doubled to be nearly 170m each in diameter, and the sites entire size now bordering 124 hectares in total. Ronnie Nichols said, “For local employment possibilities it also appears the area will lose out.” “It appears to be the intent of the commercial HUON farmers to utilise the resources of Newcastle for the various facets of their proposal, employing shipping as transport up and down the coast from Providence Bay to Newcastle, so again, opportunities for the local environment and people lose out.” “It’s our view that the proposal would be far better suited closer to the port of Newcastle and out of an area where our precious aquatic biodiversity is not jeopardised.” News Of The Area contacted NSW DPI for comment regarding Ronnie and Warwick Nichols concerns and are yet to reply at the time of publication.

Students Perform at Starstruck
By Heather SHARP
STARSTRUCK is an annual performance event for public schools in the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast Regions. This year 3500 students performed at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on 17-18 June, 2016. The events gives students experience as part of a professional show with dancing, drama, singing, choir, acrobats, circus, bands, orchestras, stage management, and lighting and sound all components of the show. Medowie’s two local public schools, Wirreanda and Medowie, both participated in the event and shared transport arrangements to make the experience run more smoothly. 2016 marks the second year that
Dear Business Owners,
Wirreanda Primary School has been involved in Starstruck. Mrs Corynne Darcy, primary school teacher and school coordinator of Starstruck, has been involved with performances for several years, having previously been involved with Karuah Public School’s participation. Dedicated teacher, Mrs Darcy told Medowie News Of The Area, “I am responsible for organising rehearsals, taking the 16 students to all rehearsals and performances and organising all costumes, props and accessories.” “One of the highlights this year for Mrs Darcy was seeing a student that she used to teach and took to Starstruck 15 years ago, now as a teacher, take a group of her own students to be involved from East Maitland Public School,” Ms Darcy said.
“Seeing students grow and develop and learn about their post-schooling successes is arguably one of the greatest joys of being a teacher,” she said. Demonstrating the strength of public schools when working together, teachers at both Medowie Public and Wirreanda Public Schools partnered to organise coach transport, easing financial pressure for parents and ensuring that students were kept together. Mrs Darcy said, “This approach provides a fantastic bonding experience between the schools and produces long lasting friendships.” This year Wirreanda Public School performed I’ll Make a Man out of You from the Disney film Mulan. Two Wirreanda students, Kyara Darcy (year 5) and Olivia Lightfoot (year 6) auditioned and were selected to be in the Hunter Tap ensemble made up of around 50 seasoned tap dancers, and performed Heigh Ho from Disney’s Snow White. Student Becomes The Teacher at Medowie Christian School
“I love being able to have a relationship with children that is meaningful.” By Heather SHARP
MEDOWIE Christian School, which has expanded significantly since it began over twenty years ago, has grown from a primary school of 41 students to now offering Kindergarten-Year 12 with over 400 students attending the local independent school. Having been in operation for the past two decades, there is now a considerable amount of past students, or alumni, who have experienced successes in their post-school life. In the past couple of years, within the graduating year 12 class, students have sought a variety of pursuits such as studying psychology at university, direct entry into the Australian Defence Force, entry into the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), and other career pathway options.
Principal Mr Simon Herd emphasises the importance of having flexible options for high school students, telling News Of The Area, “We are committed to providing flexible learning options because the school is preparing students for life beyond the school fence; for work now and in the future.” Ms Jackie Hays, Marketing Coordinator of the school told Medowie News Of The Area, “In the last couple of years, we have gone up to year 12 and there are many students with a clear focus of what they want to do.” “Our current marketing approach for the school asks current and prospective students ‘Got Dreams?’ and we mean what we ask. We want to nourish those dreams…and what students aspire to do.” Sarah Pass (previously Cork) is one such former student who followed her
dreams by graduating as a school teacher. A University of Newcastle 2015 primary school teacher graduate and former Medowie Christian School student, Ms Pass has returned to where she began her education by teaching at the school. When asked what motivated her decision to become a school teacher, Ms Pass told Medowie News Of The Area, “I love being able to have a relationship with children that is meaningful.” “I love learning and it’s a lovely environment to teach in.” Having undertaken her student-teacher practicums at Grahamstown, Narrabri West, and Irrawang Public Schools; and combined with a Special Education major, Ms Pass says these experiences have given her “a range of skills to meet students where they are at and support them individually.”
GREENS NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon and Greens candidate for Paterson John Brown have commented on Defence Minister’s visit to Williamtown last week. Senator Rhiannon said, “Almost three hundred days after Williamtown residents and workers had their lives turned upside down by the RAAF contamination crisis, Minister Payne decided to front up to them at Williamtown. “It is very hard not to see this as a cynical box-ticking exercise eleven days out from the election,” she said. “The recommendations of the Senate inquiry into this issue were clear, they were comprehensive, and they were also handed down months ago. There is no acceptable reason for the Coalition to have been silent on this for so long. “Until the investigation areas are redrawn in light of new safe PFOS/PFOA levels from the US EPA the ‘Red Zone’ boundaries in Williamtown will continue to relegate some residents to a position where they are not offered help and support, and this is absurd,” said Ms Rhiannon. “While it is positive that the Coalition is finally acknowledging this is a national problem, $55 million nationwide will not actually go very far. “What the community desperately needs is a comprehensive compensation package, free
blood testing, a national plan for remediation involving state and federal bodies and property buyback offers. John Brown said, “Residents affected by the toxic spill around the Williamtown RAAF base were totally unimpressed by the visit of Liberal Defence Minister Payne to the base yesterday. “I met with about 100 residents at a public meeting in Hexham last night and some of those had been at the meeting with Ms Payne earlier in the day,” he said. “Some were annoyed at Ms Payne’s attitude, some were angry, some were frustrated but the general feeling was more of confusion.” “The residents just wondered why the heck she visited if she had nothing to say,” said Mr Brown. “But I was very happy to speak to the residents last night to assure them of the continuing support of the Greens, particularly from Senator Lee Rhiannon and second senate candidate Michael Osborne.” “We have a positive plan to support the residents through blood-tests and proper compensation.” Mr Brown said, “Every time I visit Williamtown and the surrounding areas I hear more and more horror stories about collapsing land values, health concerns and business and financial losses. The residents and workers need support – now.”

q Gary Howlett from Nelson Bay, winner of last years, News Of The Area NRL Tipping Comp.
Ticket to Grand Final By Dave BRAZIER
IT is with great sadness to report the already well known fact that NSW have again lost the annual NRL State of Origin series, falling short of victory against QLD on Wednesday June 22 by losing 26-16 to a gutsy Maroon outfit. I’m personally not a massive NRL fan, I’m certainly not a ‘one eyed’ particular team supporter or anything like that, but what I do enjoy about Origin is the comical banter that has become so popular amongst mates from different States. Social Media platforms like Facebook ‘light up’ with often hilarious Memes depicting each States residents and players alleged ‘inadequacies’ in life. Football aside, it’s a time to reflect and have a laugh at ourselves and forget about the seriousness that life often
throws at us. With the Origin now decided and heading towards a rather uninspiring third game in a few weeks, it’s getting down to the nitty gritty end of the regular season, and where most die hard ‘Tipsters’ really start crunching the numbers and stats to ensure they gain as many points they can with each regular round of NRL Games. News Of The Area launched their popular NRL Tipping Competition at the start of the season, and despite my best efforts, I am currently ranked 27th out of the 42 participants in this years competition, with a total of 70 points. The current leader on 79 points is ‘Ali 5’ who I’m guessing is not ready to start gloating, as just one point away is ‘AlexV’ on 78 points, closely followed by ‘9 OClock’ and ‘Dragonlover 1 Stanley’ who are each sharing 77
points. Gary Howlett who won the 2015 News Of The Area Tipping Comp was tremendously excited when he received tickets to the 2015 Grand Final. Mr Howlett said, “I just can’t seem to find the same form with tipping compared to last year.” “I’m still in contention this year though. I’m always looking at the results and statistics like I did last year but it’s been a bit harder.” “I’m currently sitting in 26th position on 70 points and with only a few weeks to go I better improve quickly to retain my title as top tipster.” he told News Of The Area. The winner of this years tipping comp will again receive two ticket to the NRL Grand Final, courtesy of your local News Of The Area (Modern Media delivering Community News).

JUJITSU By Simone JOHNSON SALT Ash Community Hall has been hosting Jujitsu classes for 26 years. The academy welcomes children to adults from seven years and over. The club is purely based on self-defence techniques and does not compete with other academies or host competitions. In May this year, 2 of the clubs original black belts, Maria and Brian Sharp graded for their 6th and 5th dan black belts. The clubs founder, Robert Toll is hoping to grade for his 10th dan black belt next year. This is the highest level

you can receive in Jujitsu. Robert, who teaches both junior and senior classes, started training 45 years ago, opening the Salt Ash branch in 1990. Approximately two years ago, the club changed the learning criteria for the first belt. This is because many people don’t make it all the way to black belt, and often find it hard to remember the first thing they were taught. “In this day and age, there are so many knife attacks. That is why we took it out of black belt and made it the first thing you learn,” said Mr Toll. It takes approximately ten years of continuous training to become a black belt. “The reason why
training takes so long is so it comes second nature and an automatic reaction,” said Mr Toll. The club teaches all types of physical defences such as punching, kicking, knife and gun attacks, break falling, defence against a boxer and shoulder rolls. Classes run every Thursday of the school term, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for primary aged kids and 7.30pm to 9.30pm for high schoolers and adults. The club is a good opportunity to meet new people, get fit and most importantly, learn selfdefence. If you have any questions about the club, you can contact Robert Toll on 0408 007 866.

Sisters Success
Team sports runs in the family, as their mother, Jenny, also coached.
HOCKEY
By Simone JOHNSON FOR Medowie residents, Grace and Hannah Baxter, sporting achievement runs in their blood. Not only have they played for the Hunter PSSA Girls Hockey Team, but they will be representing their school, Soldiers Point Public, at zone and regional level, in a variety of other sports. Grace, year six, has already represented Port Stephens in netball, touch football, hockey and cross country, and will be going to zone for athletics in August. She has qualified in every event. She will also be playing hockey in Moorebank then Wagga Wagga (under 13 State Championships) as part of the

Newcastle team. Their mum, Jenny Baxter, will be the coach. This is Grace’s first year back playing hockey after a two and a half year rest, due to a serious leg break, a double compound fracture of her leg. The Hunter PSSA State Hockey Carnival was held in Albury 21-23 June. This saw both sisters playing together, through low temperatures and rain. Grace has also been called up to play for the Hunter PSSA Girls Touch Football team for the State Carnival in August. Hannah, year five, who has also recently gone to Zone for cross country and hockey, will be going for athletics as well. She has been selected to play for Newcastle under 11 hockey team in their annual tournament in Tamworth. Team sports runs in the family, as their mother, Jenny,

also coached. Open Women’s Hockey team, recently becoming State Champions in Division 2, meaning a promotion to Division 1 for next year. She played for NSW in various teams, since the age of 12, and has gone on to coach many NSW teams in various age groups. Grace and Hannah’s father, Paul, played for the Australian Country Men’s Hockey team, and has coached the NSW under 16 Boy’s All Schools team for the past few years. Jenny told News of the Area, “I’m so pleased to see our girls enjoying sport the way I have throughout my life.” “It’s rewarding to see them making friends that will last a lifetime, to develop a love of being active and appreciating all the benefits that come with team sport.”
