Remembering Animals in War By Heather SHARP

THIS week we feature former RAAF member and now Medowie local, Mr Ian Fletcher who served 16 years in the Australian Defence Force from 1979 to 1995. At last week’s Medowie Dawn Service, Mr Fletcher laid a wreath to honour animals in war, specifically the work of military dogs. News Of The Area spoke with Mr Fletcher to hear about his experiences. On the topic of RAAF dogs, Mr Fletcher said, “They are not just issued equipment, they are a formidable part of the team.” “As handlers we spent more time with our dogs than we did with our family.” “We put our trust in their hands, rather paws, as they put their lives and trust in us.” “It is a unique bond between handler and dog, a bond that can never be broken nor trust ever questioned.” “I believe that all animals

Beginning in darkness, the dawn sunrise stretched its light over the congregated locals as the Service was held and the Last Post played. Wirreanda Kindergarten student, Elizabeth aged 5, was proud to wear the miniature medals of her

father and asked to march with the school in respect of his service. Talking about why she marched, Elizabeth said, “It is important to march, because if we didn’t, no one would remember.” Mrs Jenny Nicholls was back again this year with her delicious Anzac biscuits. of all conflicts should be remembered for their part as they all have, and continue to play an integral part in our military operations.” The purple poppy, an addition to the traditional red poppy commonly worn on Remembrance Day, commemorates animals who have served and died in conflict zones. Many animals are used for war service, such as horses, pigeon, camels, donkeys and arguably the most loyal of all, dogs. Mr Fletcher explains his respect for man’s (and, woman’s) best friend saying, “I joined the RAAF in 1979 and went on to be a RAAF Security Guard and Police Dog Handler.” “There were a number of name changes over the time including RAAF Police

Dog Handler, before the ADF settled on the current name of Military Working Dogs.” “Our role was to provide security, emergency response, and intruder detection on RAAF Bases protecting aircraft and military assets whilst also being deployed around the world.” “These days the dogs are sent overseas and are able to return.” “During my time and earlier times, due to quarantine laws our dogs were not returned home, so we often deployed overseas without the dog.” “To me, Anzac Day is more than just remembering my family, Great Uncle, Grandfather WWI, my Uncle who was a POW Sandakan, and my father who served RAAF Special Wireless Unit, Central Bureau of Intelligence, it is also about remembering those who have made sacrifices and of course, those of our brothers and sisters that continue to serve.” “It’s also about acknowledging those who have returned, but may also continue with their own struggles.”

Veteran honoured IN their moving tradition of honouring veterans, the Raymond Terrace RSL Sub Branch this year took the time to acknowledge a special person amongst their distinguished guests during the wreath laying component of the main service. Mr James Page is a World War II Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy Veteran. Mr Page joined the Royal Navy as an Electrical Branch sailor prior to the start of World War II. During the war, Mr Page served for a number of years in the Royal Navy Battleship HMS KING GEORGE V. During his time on board, the ship was involved in escort duties for convoys bound for Russia. It was deployed to the Mediterranean for operations against the Italian Navy, and it deployed to the Pacific to operate in concert with US naval forces there conducting engagements against Japanese forces and the mainland, until the final surrender of Japan in 1945. Jim has some fascinating stories about his time on board this famous battleship which saw operations in three theatres of the war.

After the war ended, Mr Page migrated to Australia and joined the Royal Australian Navy for several years, before discharging and moving to Raymond Terrace in the mid-1950s.

THE good people of Raymond Terrace will no longer have to travel outside their township to ‘Return and Earn’. Muree Golf Club is the new home of Raymond Terrace’s own ‘Return and Earn’ facility ensuring residents no longer have to travel to locations such as Medowie, Thornton or even Salamander Bay. Without the need to drive to other places, the savings made through the ‘Return

and Earn’ scheme will be a lot more worthwhile with the ‘savings’ earned through recycling no longer going toward the fuel bill required to use the facility. The ‘Return and Earn’ initiative by the NSW state government has been a real winner with approximately 270 million containers recycled across the state since December last year. Of course, this equates to $27 million having been returned to the NSW

population in the space of only five months. On a local level, the various ‘Return and Earn’ facebook pages administered by Raymond Terrace resident Nicholas McLaren has helped with the running of the reverse vending machines in the area. Nicholas started the pages in an effort to let the local community know when the facilities were ready to be used. Nicholas would report when the facilities were full and inoperable, as well as when they had been emptied to help people use their time efficiently. He had the idea after his son started collecting cans to raise money to go to a soccer camp in England through Premier League club West Ham, to make it easier to know when to go and when to wait for it to be emptied or

less busy. With the unveiling of the ‘Raymond Terrace Return and Earn’ facility, Nicholas has already created the new page for this location under the same name. The people of Medowie and Salamander Bay already know the value that these pages hold, now it is Raymond Terrace’s turn. We expect the same amount of success from this new facility as the others. West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnot told News Of The Area, “I’m glad that those of us from Raymond Terrace keen on recycling through this scheme no longer need to go to Medowie or Thornton.” “I look forward to seeing many people at the machines and hope we all work together to keep the area clean and tidy.” Happy recycling, Raymond Terrace

You know, Mrs LM, I think the term Express aisle is a misnomer. It leads you into a false sense of security with its ‘12 items only’ sign. First of all, you have to take turns with the smokers, since the Express aisle doubles up as the tobacco outlet. May I suggest that you never get on the wrong side of someone who has run out of smokes. As if that isn’t enough, you also have to contend with the service desk function. This is the place people go to complain about all manner of things. They are annoyed, for example, that their two tins of tomatoes cost $2.85 instead of $2.80. This is reason enough to put a halt to the person in front of you and their groceries making their merry way along the conveyor belt. You watch, in dismay, as the duly discounted tomato tins are placed in a new plastic bag and the measly five cents is returned to its rightful, miserably cheap, owner. Then along comes the woman who forgot to scan her Flybuys or Rewards card, and you watch your organic lettuce start to wilt because it is taking so long. Finally, ‘Mrs First in Line’ is up, but then she remembers that she was supposed to buy some Toilet Duck. You want to tell her that it is better for the environment, and cheaper too, to use vinegar and bicarb soda, but before you have a chance, she has dashed back into the labyrinth of cleaning products and you know she’ll take a good 10 minutes to find the fragrance she is after. You also want to tell her that the Toilet Duck will take her number of items over the allowed 12, but that would be petty, and perhaps slightly voyeuristic, given you have had to pass your eyes over her tins of tuna, toilet paper, kitty litter, salami and so on, in order to count the number of purchases. The only time going over the 12 limit is permissible, is when one of the shop assistants ushers you into the queue because no one is waiting. You can bet, however, that the minute you start loading your groceries, a man with one pear and a small bag of macadamias will stand behind you and tut-tut at your arrogance for breaking the rules. You can’t win really. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Tanilba House set for BnB

New owners Glenn Short and Deirdre (Dee) Hall have more plans for the future

HISTORIC Tanilba House is open for business! The colonial homestead now operates as an Airbnb New owners Glenn Short and Deirdre (Dee) Hall have more plans for the future which include converting the convict built home into a function centre as Glenn explains, “Wedding, family reunions and corporate events are just some of the ideas we are toying with at the moment.” “It won’t be open on a daily basis for inspection as in the past but we plan to keep the traditional ‘Carols at Christmas’ alive and host cultural events as well,” he said. Deirdre wants to reassure residents that

the new owners wish to become part of the community. “Both Glenn and I want to get to know the locals and learn as much as possible about the history of the property,” she said. So how did the duo come to buy the property? Glenn’s parents lived in the area for some 40 years and he often admired the place when he walked past. For Deirdre it was, ‘Love at first sight.’ “We saw it for sale online and the rest is history,” he said. Glenn is currently in residence most of the time, cleaning the place up and effecting repairs. Deidre’s career keeps her in Sydney during the working week.

Defibrillators for Port Stephens Clubs

The four new defibrillators will be put in clubs at Tomaree Sports Complex, Salamander Sports Complex, King Park Sports Complex and Lakeside Sports Complex

By Rachael VAUGHAN

PORT Stephens sporting clubs are headed towards a safer future, with the announcement of funding that will ensure nineteen more clubs across Port Stephens will soon have adequate access to a defibrillator in the event of an emergency. On 10 February 2018, a local cricket player collapsed during a game at Lakeside Sporting Complex, Raymond Terrace, having suffered a heart attack. The sports ground did not have a defibrillator, and had to request the assistance of a lifeguard at the nearby Lakeside Leisure Centre. Five days later, West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott put forward a notice of motion for all Councillors to support the pooling of funds from Council and Ward funds to purchase a number of defibrillators to put across sporting centres in Port Stephens to ensure that future lives can be saved if needed. The motion was wholeheartedly supported by Councillors across the board, and the project was given a much needed cash boost this week with the announcement that the NSW Premier, The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP, has provided $4,400 in funding to Port Stephens Council to co-fund the purchase of four defibrillators for sports grounds across the Port Stephens LGA. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC, representing the Premier, met with Mayor Ryan Palmer and Cr Ken Jordan this week to announce the news. “Port Stephens Council will fund 50% of the cost in conjunction with the NSW Government and I thank Cr Ken Jordan’s advocacy and the Council staff for their prompt action following the incident at Lakeside Sports Complex,” Mr MacDonald said. Mayor Ryan Palmer said the support was indicative of a strong and productive working relationship between Port Stephens Council and the NSW Government. West Ward Councillor Ken Jordan, whose ward encompasses the Lakeside Sports Complex where the incident took place said this was timely support in between rounds of the Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program. The four new defibrillators will be put in clubs at Tomaree Sports Complex, Salamander Sports Complex, King Park Sports Complex and Lakeside Sports Complex. These four complexes along service more than nineteen local sporting groups and clubs. Cr Giacomo Arnott, who lodged the initial notice of motion, told News Of The Area, “I’m glad that the NSW

Government has come to the table to support our sporting groups with access to these life saving devices.” “I know that our sporting groups desperately want these devices, so I hope Council will assist our local sports councils

in obtaining devices for venues that still don’t have them.” Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “It’s terrific to see some more Defib’s becoming available for our community.” “Medowie Sports Councils

Committee some time ago worked to ensure that every single facility in Medowie is fitted with a defibrillator, so it’s great to see the rest of Port Stephens beginning to have the same.”

The Elvis/Cash Show

By Rachael VAUGHAN

ALL mothers need spoiling, and we have the place for you this mother’s day weekend. Hawks Nest Golf Club has the perfect show for you to send Mum out for a night with the girls, or take the whole family for a tribute show experience. Johnny Cash and Elvis will take the stage on Friday 11 May at 7:30pm in a show not to be missed. Andrew Leonard from ‘Lemvis’ has been performing as Elvis for almost 14 years and Johnny Cash for 12.

He also performs as Dean Martin in “The Rat Bags” show. It all began back in 2004 after he won a local karaoke competition with his Elvis style rendition of “My Way”. Then the big twist of fate when, a week later, he overheard a call on 2CA Canberra radio asking for someone to volunteer as an Elvis impersonator for a Fireman’s ball. Impulsively he made the call, got the gig and made his Elvis debut in front of over 500 people at Canberra’s iconic Albert Hall.

The crowd went nuts wanting more and Lemvis was born. His Mother made him up a jumpsuit and the rest is history. Since then Lemvis has performed 1000s of shows of all different kinds. Andrew takes each show as it comes and no matter how big or small it really does not matter. He says “it’s all about giving your best, entertaining and interacting with the people, putting a smile on a face, making someone feel special, touching hearts, creating new Elvis fans but most importantly paying tribute to the greatest entertainer the world has

MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY News Of The Area - Special Feature

Official Grand Opening

Medowie Sports and Business Centre

Redevelopment Project

Thursday, 3 May, 2018

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

IT’S only a few days before the Official Grand Opening of the long-awaited Medowie Sports and Business Centre redevelopment project - 58 Ferodale Road. This Saturday 5 May, 2018, the Official Grand Opening marks the completion of Stage 1 with ceremonial ribbon cutting, along with ceremonial ‘breaking of ground’ for Stage 2 construction of the indoor swimming pool by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer. The monumental project has more than doubled the size of the original centre fondly known as ‘squashys’ - being the largest, private redevelopment under one roof, that has ever taken place in Medowie. Members of the local residential, business and wider community are invited to join the centre operators with official guests for the morning’s program of festivities and official ceremony. Starting at 9am with

By Rachael VAUGHAN PREMIER rugby will make its long-awaited return to Medowie’s Boyd Oval this upcoming Saturday when Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union heavyweights, The Wanderers, take on the local lads. The action-packed day will consist of three games, giving the local crowd plenty of opportunity to let the visiting ‘Two Blues’ know how much they support the home-grown lads. It all starts at 12.30pm when the Medowie Marauders Premier Three side takes on the visiting Two Blues. The Marauders, having welcomed home some local juniors and currently playing an entertaining style of rugby, will like their chances against the cellar dwelling Wanderers side who have struggled in their first three games. Hopefully the local boys can get the job done. The Premier Two’s will follow at 1.45pm with Nelson Bay taking their turn against The Wanderers. Both sides have shown some good form so far this

season, so a tight match that goes right down to the wire may well be on the cards. In fact, it looks like the type of game where a parochial home crowd may well be the difference in the end, so get down to Boyd Oval and do your part. Hopefully after seeing two wins for the home teams, your vocal chords can get through the Premier Rugby fixture when the top of the table Nelson Bay side take on the best that the Wanderers can offer. With a 3.00pm kick-off, the Boys from the Bay will be out to show the Wanderers why they are undefeated thus far in season 2018. Nelson Bay have already created a five-point gap between them and second place on the ladder after only three games, so another strong showing against the sixthplaced Wanderers outfit will no doubt send a strong message to the rest of the competition. It is shaping up to be a huge day of fantastic rugby action, so get down to Boyd Oval this Saturday and support your teams.
