Centenary flying fun By Rachael VAUGHAN A FUN day was had by young and old, despite terrible weather, at the celebration of the Centenary of Australia’s first flying squadrons. The day began with an official ceremony for invited guests and members of the press, where the GovernorGeneral, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), as Commander-In-Chief, was welcomed as an honoured guest. Guests were treated to a ceremonial parade and flypasts to mark this significant milestone in Army,
Air Force and Australian Defence Force history. Following the parade invited guests enjoyed a flying programme and static displays, which showcased historic warbirds and current Air Force aircraft in acknowledgement of the Squadrons’ rich history in flying combat. Also attending the official part of this historic event were Number 1 Squadron personnel from RAAF Amberley and personnel from Numbers 2, 3 and 4 Squadrons, based at RAAF Williamtown, as well as Veterans and family members. Outside the Williamtown

RAAF Base gates, the roads were lined with cars, filled with families out to watch the fly overs and not at all perturbed by the weather conditions. The RAAF Base and Fighterworld put on a great day of festivities and events to mark this special occasion, and they had a steady trade of passionate fans coming through the door. Medowie mother of three, Renee Craddock, took her children to the celebrations and reported that the day was a wonderful success, and that there was something for everyone to do, and learn about. Renee told News Of The Area, “They got to sit in a PC9 propeller fighter jet, sit in a F/A 18 classic hornet, climb in and through the tanks, sit on Quad bikes, play with the fire trucks and hoses, inspect unloaded guns, and so much more!” “It was a wonderful family friendly celebration.”

Community Wellbeing Township devastated by loss of young man in Full Swing
By Simone JOHNSON
LAST week saw the beginning of the Community Wellbeing Program’s movement and relaxation classes, as well as the Community Cuppa. The program, designed to help de-stress those affected by the fallout of the Williamtown Contamination is free to all residents influenced by the imposed ‘Red Zone’. The first movement and relaxation class attracted six people, with this week’s numbers growing to nine. They will continue to be taught twice a week at The Yoga Hut on Lemon Tree Passage Road on Thursdays
at 6.30pm and at the Port Stephens Church of Christ on Friday’s at 10am. The Friday class includes a free Creche, to encourage young mums to get involved. Instructor for both classes, Julie Hawkins told News Of The Area, “The classes are starting to grow in size and the people that have been coming are a wide age group.” “The people in the first 2 classes are already relaxed and at peace, benefiting from the classes.” The classes not only focus on relaxation but teach people how to stretch and breath properly. “I feel very privileged to
be involved in the Wellbeing Program.” “Learning to relax and breathe is such an important part of reducing stress and anxiety, both of these are greatly affecting a lot of local residents,” she said. The Community Cuppa is also attracting a variety of residents, with 13 in attendance this week. The cuppa takes place on Fridays from 12, after the relaxation class at the Church of Christ. Community members have been supplying homemade cakes, with this weeks speciality being ‘Streuselkuchen’, a German delight. The classes will continue for another six weeks, with all age groups welcome.

THE close-knit community of Medowie was shocked this week at the devastating loss of popular young man, 17-year old Corey Pethebridge. Mr Pethebridge was killed in a single vehicle accident while riding his motorbike on Wednesday, 26 October at approximately 10pm on
Abundance Road, Medowie. In a public show of grief, friends of the Irrawang High School students have established an impromptu shrine on the side of the road to commemorate the life of Corey. Among the floral tributes and other objects of remembrance are footballs,
a nod to the young man’s promising potential as a Rugby League player, having previously been named on the Sydney Rooster’s Junior’s trial list. For those who are struggling with this news, reach out for help at services such as www.headspace.org. au and www.lifeline.org.au / 13 11 14

Tailor Made Fish Farm nominated for state award
NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, and President of NSW Farmers, Derek Schoen have today announced the four finalists for the 2016 NSW Farmer of the Year Award. Mr Blair said the finalists are leaders in their fields, who have demonstrated excellence in farming. “The state’s $12 billion primary industries are in good hands, reflected by the high calibre of finalists we have in this year’s competition,” Mr Blair said.
Port Stephens is lucky enough to have our very own Nick Arena as one of the The 2016 finalists. Nick Arena, who operates Tailor Made Fish Farm on 43 acres at Bobs Farm. They grow tropical barramundi species and produce hydroponic fancy lettuce, basil, parsley, buk choy and spinach. The enterprise also houses an onsite restaurant named Cook-aBarra. determination to excel in their farming operations,” Mr Schoen said. “They are driving innovation in efficient agriculture practices, strengthening biosecurity and utilising new research and technology to improve the profitability of their farming businesses.” The winner of the 2016 Farmer of the Year will receive $10,000 and finalists will each receive $2,000. The Award is an initiative of NSW Farmers and NSW Department of Primary Industries, with support from The Land and SafeWork NSW.

HALLOWEEN is now a ‘thing’ in Australia, amid the cries of joy and groans of disdain. Medowie celebrated in style with a disco for kids hosted by the Dunes Greenhouse Eatery, then followed it up with lots of fun and merriment with trick or treating around local streets on Monday night. Medowie Mums facebook page had a post running all week for parents to put their streets down on a list of ‘Medowie Safe Streets’ for parents to accompany their children around for some light hearted fun. Last week, News Of The Area reported that we, along with local mother Susan Patten, would be stocking
Coles and Woolworths with balloons for people to take and put on their letterbox if they were happy to have door knockers. Over 600 balloons were taken during the course of two weeks. Susan told News Of The Area, “It’s lovely that so many households chose to be involved this year.” “It truly is growing every year, and it’s lovely to see the kids having fun!” Safety was a big focus this last week, with parents reminded to accompany their children and speak with them about the differences between taking lollies from strangers, and visiting neighbours with an adult on this one celebrated night.

Firefighters Climb Sydney Tower By Heather SHARP
IN A show of support for those who have Motor Neurone Disease (MND), three firefights from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade recently climbed an astounding 1504 stairs in the Sydney Tower Eye. On Sunday, 23 October 2016 the firefighters completed the amazing
feat, joining their firefighter counterparts from across Australia and the world, all the while wearing full firefighting kit weighing 20kgs. A total of 446 firefighters participated in the physically gruelling challenge. Climbing the 98 floors of the Sydney Tower Eye, the event now in its second year is organised by firefighters from
fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW). In partnership with Macquarie University, they hope to raise $500 000 which will go towards research to beat this disease. Local firefighter, Darryl Luck, said he wanted to join his firefighter colleagues from around Australia and international firefighters participated too this year, to
Day for Daniel focus By Rachael VAUGHAN
WIRREANDA Public School students this week participated in the ‘Day For Daniel’ awareness day. The annual day was developed by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation with the aim of educating children about their personal safety. Daniel’s parents, Bruce and Denise, said, “Day for Daniel is all about keeping kids safe.” “Together we can make Australia a safer place for our children, everyone has the right to be safe.” Crimes against children have
no place in modern Australia. This year’s ‘Day For Daniel’ saw an estimated 1 million children complete child safety activities at their schools, and countless others attended walks for Daniel across the country - to finish the walk that Daniel never could. Students from Wirreanda were invited to wear nonuniform red clothes, and participate in important learning and awareness activities. Wirreanda Public School Principal, Philippa Young, told News Of The Area, “Our teachers have been
conducting Child Safety activities to help in Keeping Kids Safe.” “Things like identifying a safety network, being alert for body clues when something is unsafe; and personal safety.” This year marks the 12th day for Daniel, and Denise and Bruce said the numbers this year were record breaking. It is a day to honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe and to use the spotlight to raise awareness about child safety and protection. It’s a good reminder CONTINUED Page 6

Halloween Celebrations
Australian culture is a combination of British and American culture in some regards, and for a long time there was a strong resistance to Halloween. It’s traditionally not a mainstream cultural practice we have celebrated as a country. However, over the last five years or so, possibly longer, it’s becoming more accepted and more of a mainstream cultural practice. It seems more and more families are now taking it up in terms of trick-or-treating being a fun thing to do for the kids and family around this time of year. Whether we have jumped on the Halloween bandwagon, or whether the celebration in Australia has gradually become more culturally acceptable, as long as our kids are safe and we can make our own minds up as to whether to participate, then all is well!

Imugi defend titles again at State Championships THIS month, sixteen members of Imugi Taekwondo entered the NSW National All Styles Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. Many were hoping to defend their titles, whilst some were new to the tournament scene hoping for a shot at the gold that they’ve watched their peers previously achieve. At the completion of one very long Championship Tournament, contested by almost 300 people, Imugi came home with 7 NSW Titles. The Chief Instructor and founder of Imugi Taekwondo, Chung Sa Nim Tony Gillespie and co-founder Kyo Sa Nim Kelly O’Brien, lead from the front, successfully defended their titles from 2015 and Tony added a further two to his name. Tony took out the NSW Champion in Male Open Black Belt Forms, Point Sparring
and defended the Continuous Sparring title. Whilst Kelly only contended one event this year, also taking home the Female Open Black Belt Continuous Sparring for a second year. Kelly told News Of The Area, “We’re incredibly proud of all the Imugi’s who competed.” “I spend the majority of the tournaments coaching our team and each of them leaves everything on the mat every time.” “For our small school to come home with State Champions after competing against large and long established clubs, it is a true testament to their dedication and indomitable spirit.” Other Imugi’s who earned the title of NSW Champion were Taylor Windle in 1617y Male Open Continuous Sparring, Emmett Scott in 14-15y 10th-6th Kyu
Points Sparring and Simon Tuppurainen in Novice Male (18+) Continuous Sparring. Other admirable performance came from Nicole Gentle, Novice Female (18+) earning two silvers and a bronze in her first state championships. A special story to come out of the championship is that of Thomas Gillespie. Tom competed in the (1011y) 10th-6th Kyu, and placed 4th in Continuous Sparring, despite having both Cerebral Palsy and Aspergers. Tony said, “Tom has to work hard on a daily basis just to train, so for him to place in an abled body competition was truly inspirational.” Imugi Taekwondo is a local martial arts school with approximately 60 dedicated students.
