Over $10,000 raised from Charity Day By Rachael VAUGHAN

q CHARITY: Kelly Mason with the egg and spoon Medowie Marauders Rugby Union Club Charity Day.

WHEN the Medowie Marauders Rugby Union Club put on a fundraiser, they pull out all the stops. Saturday 30 July saw the “Pink Sock Breast Cancer Round” where a massive fundraiser was put on by the club at their Boyd Oval home ground to celebrate and raise much needed donations.

The recipient of funds raised from the day is the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF). HBCF help care for local Hunter residents with breast cancer. They help with practical things like lifts to and from appointments, meals, cleaning and all those things that help make a stressful time a

LOCAL ELECTIONS

NSW Local Council Elections will take place on Saturday, 10 September 2016. However, due the council amalgamation process only 81 NSW councils are having elections. All remaining councils, including those that have been

amalgamated, have had their elections deferred until 2017. This situation has the potential to cause confusion among some electors, particularly those who live, or are enrolled, in areas not conducting elections, bordering councils that are.

Electors may turn up to a pre-poll voting centre or at a polling place on election day only to be told they don’t need to vote. Apart from the understandable frustration this may cause it also diverts polling place resources from

Safe haven for pooch play

The Medowie Dog park, a Port Stephens Council facility, situated on Coachwood Drive, is a fully fenced leash free dog park. The enclosure has a double fence entry to ensure no dogs escape near the road, bags and a bin provided, as well as concrete tunnels for the pooches to play in. A neighbour adjacent to the dog park, Sam McMillan told News Of The Area, “It’s such a great service for Medowie to have.” “It’s good to see families using it to exercise their dogs and give them some space to run. A few of my neighbours constructed a water tub and make sure it’s kept full, and often take over cool buckets of fresh water during hot days in Summer.” Dogs are more likely to escape if they have poor fencing on their yards, and if they are bored and not exercised enough. If dogs are not taken for regular walks, it is only natural that they would want to get out and explore. Young Medowie resident, Jessica Smith, regularly takes her four dogs to the park with her parents or big brother. Jessica told News Of The Area, “It’s fun to come here! The puppies all love running around and meeting the other dogs. They’re so tired when they

More options from upgraded paddock By Simone JOHNSON

PORT Stephens Horse Training Centre has recently renovated their paddocks, ready for the businesses official opening.

Located in front of Hellfire Paintball at Salt Ash, the facilities have undergone thousands of dollars in maintenance, taking 12 to 18 months to complete. The business specialises in teaching riders camp training and team penning. The training centre has hosted charity events in the past in order to raise money for the Kids Cancer Project. They are hoping their improved paddocks will enable them to host another event in the next six months as well as increasing success on the day. Their past charity event generated $6,400 on one day and another $6,300 the next. Mayor of Port Stephens

Bruce MacKenzie donated his cattle for the last charity event, with the events only able to be run through the kind donations of cattle. No animals or cattle are harmed at these events and are only used for a few minutes each. The training centre only uses very specific cows as a new innovation in horse training. Coming from Indonesia, the cows are Banteng crossed with American Long Horn. Owner and operator of the business, Steve Hugnagl told News Of The Area, “We encourage people to come on down to our new facility.” “It is open to anyone with a horse who wants to have some fun, teach the horse some

Craft to support the African Family

q

FAMILY: Last year’s fundraising crafters are hopeful for another successful weekend.

By Rachael VAUGHAN AN event for all craft loving people is coming up, and it’s sure to be one you won’t want to miss. Lauren Chircop, an avid crafter, was inspired after a

life-changing trip to Africa with her daughter, to do something wonderful for the ‘Mwakabana’ family she met on her travels. On their return to Australia, she committed to helping this family, and making a difference

in their community. Lauren told News Of The Area, “I began by turning my craft business of twelve years over to completely raising money to fund Andrew Mwakabana through University to study social

Racetrack plans in motion By Rachael VAUGHAN THE long awaited facility that motor enthusiasts in Medowie have been waiting for, is one step closer. ‘Circuit Italia’ the 2.9 kilometre motorsport facility was approved for the Italia Road Balickera site in 2013, but faced complaints, backlash and efforts to stop development commencing. After finally receiving their construction certificate in March this year, the owners are now in negotiations with potential builders – hoping to open the track in the first half of 2017. But the question remains as to whether the tracks completion will be a positive thing for our area, or not. Social media is rife at the moment locally, hitting out at unsafe driving on our roads. It is hoped that the Circuit Italia facility will help with this, with plans for the facility

to offer driver training, open track days and a safe, controlled environment for cars and their drivers. Brad Host, from the Toy Shop Automotive Imports, told News Of The Area, “I think one of the biggest positive aspects is the ongoing economic benefits to the community this could bring, as well as business opportunity.” “There’s potential for this track to host massive international events, as well as opportunity for basically anyone who wants to be involved to turn with a car, have proper safety equipment and training and get out there on the circuit in a safe, controlled environment,” he said. “Everyone is excited but it's been a long time coming. There is a bit of ' believe it when we see it' mindset.” “As far as negativity from neighbours, it's a moot point: there are existing

Motorsport activities including motocross and hill climb that have been there for ages, not to mention it's adjacent to the pacific highway and the RAAF jets path overhead,” Mr Host told News Of The Area. “This can be a great thing – not the negatives anyone might be talking about. All race cars have to comply with national standard 95dB drive by noise limit and acoustic mounds are being installed. Perception is way worse than reality here,” Mr Host said. The facility will not cater to drag racing or speedway events, but will instead focus its clientele and events to circuit racing, demo days, club events and eventually making bids to host international events. News Of The Area will keep updated on the developments of this new facility.

“The group over the last three years has completely supported his tuition, food and board on campus and next year Andrew will graduate and I hope to open an orphanage in Arusha Tanzania, which Andrew and his father will manage,” Ms Chircop said. The group has also crafted together to fund two operations for other family members, schooling for several orphans that the family have taken in, a bed, clothes and two small businesses for them to produce an income from. This September, the group will again host their annual Craft Connection Fundraising Retreat. The retreat runs for four days from 22 September through to 25 September, and will be held at Motto Farm in Raymond Terrace.

Dinner is optional and starts at $25 for the restaurant buffet and accommodation at the motel is also optional so people have the option to stay or travel home each evening. Danie leads the team in a non-denominational prayer before each game, asking for strength, good
