Artisan in the new TAG Gallery is Jenny Crozier. Jenny is an outstanding local artist who has won over 100 awards. She was instrumental in setting up the Tilligerry Arts Group many years ago, and is also the brainchild behind the Jenny Crozier Fantastic Fakes Exhibition, which will take place over the June Long Weekend in 2018. Jenny’s artistic talent was evident at a very early age; she was always drawing and painting. Recognising her potential, her parents enrolled her with the Parramatta Art Society where she studied tone and composition. Her first exhibited work was shown at the age of twelve. As an adult, Jenny worked as a ticket writer and illustrator in her chosen career. Later Jenny moved to Noosa, where she continued her artistic skills and won her first award. Wishing to pass on her knowledge and passion for art, Jenny began classes for children and adults.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I’m proud to be able to support these incredible local community groups with this grassroots funding, which will deliver new community infrastructure in Medowie and Tanilba Bay and help pay for muchneeded improvements to our local schools and sports clubs.” “I congratulate all the successful recipients and

Over the ensuing years Jenny’s work has won a total of 100 awards, 58 of which were achieved in the Newcastle area. Most recently, her works were awarded in four categories at the Tilligerry Art Festival and 1st prize Major Award in the Raymond Terrace Art Show. Not surprisingly,

Jenny’s work is much in demand and is displayed in many private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. amount of competition this year between lots of really worthwhile projects, and I look forward to receiving even more applications next year,” she added. An additional $242,195 was also awarded to thirteen other projects across Port Stephens, with a total of $300,000 awarded to sixteen projects within the electorate.

“Jenny’s artistic talent is certainly something that needs to be shared, and enjoyed by all.” The exhibition of her work will continue until Sunday 4 February 2018. Head over to the brand new TAG Gallery, if you can, and enjoy her talent!

Wirreanda Student Leaders

By Rachael VAUGHAN

WIRREANDA Public School have announced their school leaders for 2018, with the successful students being a group that will certainly represent the school well and uphold their values. Wirreanda Public School is a community school where students, parents, staff and members of the community value and support each other. Wirreanda emphasises quality student outcomes, equity and the development of a sense of self worth, mutual respect and responsibility. The school’s core values underpin the daily operation of the school, and will be an integral part of the way the Captains, Vice-Captains and Prefects will be expected to conduct themselves. These strong core values will require the school leaders

to be strong, confident and dedicated. They will be expected to be at the forefront of ensuring these core values are not only upheld, but instilled in their fellow students. 2018 Wirreanda Public School Captain Sophie Cieplechowicz told News Of The Area, “I am proud and excited to be a part of the great leadership team for 2018, and I’m looking forward to working with the leadership team to achieve great things for our school.” “I am feeling privileged to be able to give back to the school after having being inspired by so many great teachers in my time at Wirreanda.” “I am excited proud to be a leader of such a great school,” she said. The students are excited for the challenge ahead,

and are looking forward to representing their schools. Wirreanda Public

Your husband sounds like the Christmas grinch. He obviously hasn’t been taught the subtleties of gift receiving. This is a skill developed over many years of receiving things that we don’t actually want, or even need, but we still have the ability to show, even feign, delight. It is a key learning area. Perhaps your husband has a deepseated resentment of Christmas that stems from childhood. Nothing short of the psychoanalyst’s couch will be able to cure that one. But you could offer him some cues for the future. These are appropriate comments when you receive a gift you don’t really like: “You shouldn’t have.” (You really shouldn’t have). “I have no words.” (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything). “I’m feeling overwhelmed.” (I’m going to need a couple of drinks to come up with an appropriate response). “Oh, wow, it matches the gift that you gave me last year.” (There’s a whole range of this hideous stuff?). “I know the perfect spot for this.” (I knew that storage cabinet would come in handy). “It’s perfect. Did you keep the receipt in case I need the next size up?” (My left leg wouldn’t fit into those shorts, you moron). I hope that 2018 is an improvement on this year, Mrs JF, and that your husband becomes the man you deserve. Interestingly, we have the same initials. You must be a lovely person.

Never Too Old for a Good Ol’ Sing Along

OPINION

End of an Era

Dear News Of The Area,

By Marian SAMPSON

AFTER 17 years the Uniting Church of Tilligery has decided not to continue with Kids Korner in 2018. This small playgroup for children 0-5 years old and their carers was started by Jean McKinnon just after The Uniting Church was completed in May 2000 with 6 children. She continued until she was into her 80's when Marie Towler took over as coordinator in 2006. Over the time children numbers have fluctuated from 8 to 24 all enjoying a great time learning and socializing through play. Many lasting friendships have been made both with the adults and the children. Some of these children are now in high school and

beyond but it is always great to catch up with the families. I would like to thank the families who have been part of this group over the years for their support and their help and friendship. We all have some wonderful memories. As today there are many more playgroups in the area and the number of children that would be attending in 2018 would only have been 2 or 3 it was felt that the group was no longer needed. Amenities Lure Tourists

HARBOURSIDE Haven residents are proving that you are never too old. Resident Gwen Smith, who is a sprightly and somewhat glamorous 90 year old recently formed the “Village Singers”. Bringing together a small group of former choristers who have joined to sing and have fun while keeping themselves and others entertained at their retirement village. Gwen who was a famous Musical Comedy star in her heyday, told News Of The Area, “Just because one is living in a retirement village, it doesn’t mean you are retired from living to the full, having fun dressing up and planning events.” She believes that singing

together also has many health benefits- it boosts the immune and breathing systems, aids in memory retention, posture and self-confidence. Ron and Diana Souter who spent many years as a part of the Seaside Singers were also co-opted to assist with the Village Singers’ first concert which truly delighted the residents and staff. Diana Souter told News Of The Area, “It was an absolute joy to work with the Village Singers and to see them enjoy themselves is a real privilege.” Gwen welcomes more singers and would love to hear from other retirement village residents who would like to join her little choir. You can find out more about joining the Village Singers by calling 0404 732 314.

By Geoff WALKER IT’S not by chance that the huge influx of tourists in motor homes and caravans ends up in Lemon Tree Passage. Older travellers, affectionately known as ‘Grey Nomads’ and those with disabilities carefully plan their journeys. This they do by targeting places with the amenities they need. Henderson Park is one that ticks all the boxes and now provides an upgraded amenities block, a ‘dump point’ for sewerage and a MLAK (Master Lock Access Key) service to the disability toilets. There is also an upgraded boat ramp complete with a waste pump out service. The recent addition of

$30 000 ‘sails’ over the play equipment has also adds charm to the area. Long time ward councillor Steve Tucker see it this way: “All of these amenities are listed on tourist maps or online and travellers always target those which have most to offer. Add to this the fact that LTP has a beautiful waterfront setting and it’s easy to see why this destination is growing in popularity.” “So successful has been the big makeover ($1.3 million) of the waterfront been, we will now be turning our attention to both the Tanilba Bay and Mallabula foreshore reserves. These will be upgraded as funds become available,” he said.

them watching me play a game of their favorite sport on Saturday, and then me cheering them on in their games on Sunday will bring us closer as a family and create memories that will last a lifetime.” BDAFL president Wal Bembic said, “Black Diamond AFL is hoping that the new enterprise in Port Stephens can go from strength-tostrength in the upcoming years.” “Part of our strategy going forward was giving any area that has AFL a club to build the region up.” “There’s a lot of potential in Port Stephens and they have a fantastic junior club,” he said. The competition will commence on April 7, 2018 with all grand finals to be held on September 1, 2018. The home and away season will run for 18 weeks with all teams playing 16 matches and having two byes. Finals will consist of a top seven elimination series that
