EVERY day in Australia, around fifty women are told they have breast or gynaecological cancer, and 12 of those statistically succumb to the disease, according to the Pink Ribbon organisation that supports fundraising and research into Women’s Cancer.

were informed by other residents who had stopped that the fire brigade was on the way.

Matthew and Wade were concerned about how quickly the dry grass could go up, and

decided to take matters into their own hands.

“We grabbed a big branch each and proceeded to put the fires out – it didn’t take a lot of effort at all,” Matthew told News Of The Area.

“The brigade then turned up and hosed the

whole area to make sure nothing would reignite there were a few nearby houses and I know what bushfires can be like in Medowie with the very thick dense bush land,” he said.

Outpouring of kindness is touching

After complications from recent heart surgery, Barry passed away last week, at home with his beloved wife of forty-seven years, Wendy.

WHEN Rebecca Garlick realised she would not be able to travel down from Queensland to visit her father for his birthday three years ago, she unknowingly started a chain reaction of kindness from locals, and a wonderful memory for all involved.

Barry Hopkins was waiting for a hip operation, quite sick with heart complications, unable to take his best mate ‘Jack’ the Chihuahua for their walks and feeling a little down on his birthday.

Rebecca was upset that she couldn’t come and visit, and tried in vain to organise a business to drop both flowers and chocolates off to her Dad to surprise him.

She took to facebook to see if anyone could help, and asked if anyone would be kind enough to take a moment of their day to drop a card or some chocolates to her Dad. What happened was nothing short of wonderful,

and the epitome of Medowie’s community spirit.

Visitors dropped in to visit Barry all day, bringing with them boxes of chocolates, bottles of wine, cards, flowers, pot plants and lots of warm wishes and birthday hugs for a man they didn’t even know.

Rebecca told News Of The Area, “We didn’t know how to tell Dad what was about to happen as my post took off, but then a local lady, Nic Kay, and her daughter turned up to have a glass of wine with him – that’s when he knew!”

“He was always a humble man, so he didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or be cranky with me – it didn’t stop that day, weeks later lovely cards were still arriving,” Rebecca said.

This wonderful outpouring of kindness made Rebecca realise that her parents had made the right decision when they moved here in 2000.

“I still cry when I think of the way Medowie showed

their love for him – and his love for the community never dampened, even when his car was randomly hit by graffiti artists recently,” Rebecca told News Of The Area.

Rebecca again took to facebook this week to share news of a different nature,

FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has asked questions of the Health Minister to explain the ramifications of an international finding on a firefighting chemical that has contaminated land and water around Williamtown RAAF base.

The Stockholm

Convention’s Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee this week adopted a “draft risk profile” for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which says: “PFOA, its salts and related compounds are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to animals including humans” and that “PFOA and its salts

and related compounds are likely, as a result of their long-range environmental transport, to lead to adverse human health impacts and/ or environmental effects such that global action is warranted”.

Health guidelines in Australia are that “there is currently no consistent

evidence that exposure to PFOS and PFOA causes adverse human health effects”.

“I have written to Sussan Ley to ask whether this international finding will have any effect on Australian guidelines,” Ms Swanson said.

“I have also asked her whether this has any effect on health risks in relation to the Williamtown community.”

By Rachael VAUGHAN AS the bushfire season is now upon us, News Of The Area thought it to be a poignant time to share some stories about some of our volunteers that you will likely be seeing around the station, and our community.

Mrs Louise Morgan joined the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade in 2013 after her children had finished school.

Facing head-on into a fire isn’t how most people choose to spend their free time but that is often where you will find this Medowie mother of three.

Louise spoke with News Of The Area about her decision to Volunteer.

“I’ve always done volunteer work, whether it be the school canteen or helping out at the kids’ sports,” she said.

“I like a challenge, I’ve never really been a ‘girly-girl’, I like to push myself,” Louise said.

Brigade Captain Andrew Collins is always keen to sit down with anyone contemplating joining the Medowie Brigade, whose members have been

instrumental in fighting some of the area’s biggest bush fires in recent years.

Community members are also encouraged to introduce themselves, and especially young children, to brigade members you may see around town.

As is the case with any emergency services, it is

important that children feel some familiarity with rescue personnel if possible, so that they may feel confident in asking for help in a situation where they may be frightened.

Captain Andrew Collins is keen to quell myths that may still be floating around about fire fighters.

“People often consider firefighting as a male dominated arena and that females are delegated roles such as communications or catering,” Captain Collins told News Of The Area.

“Louise is one of four women we currently have here at Medowie and everyone who pitches in

shares the many roles on offer - they have the same opportunities, regardless of whether they are male or female,” he said.

Following an intensive training program, Louise Morgan is both Bush Firefighter and Village Firefighter certified, and she is completing her first aid

certification.

“Volunteering with the Brigade is really flexible, I work full-time and have family and other commitments,” Louise told News Of The Area.

The Brigade meets each Saturday morning at the station on the corner of Ferodale and Medowie roads.

“We had nearly 100 children and 150 burgers served over the night - we really appreciate the support and are already looking forward to our next movie night.”

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Greenhouse Eatery has seen a need in Medowie, and they have filled it.

They know how much parents enjoy a restaurant experience where they don’t need to be worried about their children, and they have catered to them.

The ‘Burger and Beer’ Movie night last week was a huge success, offering adults a $15 burger and beer package deal, while the children relaxed on chairs, rugs and pillows and watching Kung Fu Panda 3.

The Greenhouse staff even put on a ‘candy bar’ complete with popcorn snacks, lollies and drinks for the kids.

Greenhouse staff told News Of The Area, “We’re so excited by the turn out - it was a wonderful success!”

“We had nearly 100 children and 150 burgers served over the night - we really appreciate the support and are already looking forward to our next movie night.”

The burgers were delicious, the beer was cold, the children were entertained, no one minded when children made noise, and everyone left happy.

News Of The Area thinks The Greenhouse Eatery is certainly onto a winner.

Swanson office opened by Shorten

THE atmosphere at the official opening of Meryl Swanson’s Raymond Terrace office was welcoming and uplifting.

The diversity of those in attendance was a wonderful example of how Meryl, in her short time in office, is already making a difference to people from all walks of life.

Students, pensioners, families and supporters from both sides of the Labor/ Liberal line were present, all united in welcoming Meryl officially to Raymond Terrace, opening her ‘new’ office on

the old post office site of former MP Bob Baldwin’s Federal office.

Justin Ridgeway, proud Worimi man, performed a culturally moving and inclusive smoking ceremony, acknowledging the traditional owners of the land, and welcoming the dignitaries and community members.

Meryl Swanson opened the ceremony, thanking everyone for attending, and acknowledging special guests – including, but not limited to: Bill Shorten Leader of the Opposition, Kate Washington Port Stephens MP, Clayton

Barr Cessnock MP, Bruce MacKenzie Mayor of Port Stephens, Nuatali Nelmes Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Geoff Dingle and Councillor Henry Meskauskas (Maitland Council).

Ms Swanson introduced Mr Shorten, who spoke to the crowd about his thoughts on current issues residents of our beautiful area are facing, spending time focusing on the plight of the residents of Williamtown, and pledging his support and unwavering commitment to see they are compensated.

“I do not understand why it has taken so long to get

down to business and help these people – it has been over 13 months” Mr Shorten said “Their land should be fit for the purpose they intended and if a Government is responsible for contaminating land, then they are responsible for fixing the problem – I will offer my support to Meryl, and the work she is already doing for these people, until this happens” he said.

Mr Shorten also spoke on other party policies, including defending Medicare, local jobs and our rising unemployment rate

and commitment to properly funding schools according to need.

He told the crowd, “We will use every day between now and the next election to ensure we are committed to our policies and the Australian people.”

Mr Shorten thanked Meryl Swanson for being someone he is proud to have representing the Labor party, and that he believes we are in good hands under her leadership and support.

Mr Shorten personally told News Of The Area, “This is a beautiful area, I can see so many wonderful

things happening here and I’m sure with Meryl as your representative, that list will only get longer.”

Mr Shorten took time before leaving to meet with residents of Williamtown – privately and away from the Media.

The attendees were also treated to an impressive musical performance by young students from St.Paul’s Primary School at Rutherford.

News Of The Area extends a heartfelt congratulations to Meryl Swanson on her official opening, and a thank you to Mr Bill Shorten for taking time from his busy schedule to visit our area.

Community come together for a school facelift

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE hard work of Medowie Public School P&C has paid off, with the installation of their brand new fence last weekend.

For months, the school has been fundraising to replace their dated school fence, selling individual pickets to families, and package deals to businesses.

Purchasers of these pickets were given small

plaques on ‘their’ picket, to commemorate their donation to the school.

The brand new picket fence was supplied and installed by Matt Gannon of MG Fencing Solutions - a fencing business located in Medowie.

It spans an impressive ninety metres, and is made of aluminium colourbond pickets.

The classic picket fence look will help to keep the ‘country feel’ intact for this wonderful little school.

The volunteers worked all long weekend alongside MG

Fencing staff, to complete the job before school returns.

Special thanks to Pete Conlon, Eric Dorn, William Boswell and Heath Boswell for all of their help with install.

Rhianna, from MG Fencing, told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to see yet another example of people like this in our little community, giving their time to help others.”

Saddened customers as Sunnyboy’s are discontinued

By Simone JOHNSON THIS week marked the end of the Sunnyboy era.

Daily Juice Co. confirmed they regrettably were ceasing production of the frozen treat as of August 2016.

The company said this was due to an ongoing reduction in customer demand over many years.

Since the news broke, customers have been reflecting their heartbreak on Twitter and Facebook, with a ‘Save Sunnyboy Ice Blocks’ page created on 27 September.

People have been flocking to the supermarkets to get their hands on the last available products on the shelf.

Port Stephens resident and mother to Medowie family Jan Noake told News of The Area, “We used to have Sunnyboy’s whenever we would take our kids on holidays to Noosa.”

“They were great to have on the beach during hot summers.”

The ice blocks were hugely popular from the 1960’s all the way through to the mid 1990’s, leaving a large variety of saddened customers.

“It’s sad to see old favourites go, even though they were insanely sticky and sometimes difficult to eat.”

“I tried to buy one last box, but since the news broke it looks like everyone else beat me to it,” she said.

Encouraged to apply for Sports funding SPORTING clubs in Port Stephens are encouraged to apply for the Local Sport Grant Program to guarantee increased involvement in recreational activities.

Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, said sport and active recreation delivers many personal and community benefits including developing self-esteem, maintaining health and fitness, nurturing talented athletes and contributing to individual enjoyment of life.

“Investment in local sport and recreational facilities will encourage greater participation in sporting activities and support a stronger and healthier community,” Ms Washington said.

Organisations may apply for one project per project type. The maximum available to any one organisation is $25,000 in a financial year. The amount organisations

Deputy was unopposed victor

q Councillor and Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan with Mayor Bruce MacKenzie holding Anti-merger petition orgainiser earlier this year.

COUNCILLOR Chris Doohan will continue as Deputy Mayor following his reelection at Tuesday’s Council meeting.

Cr Doohan was elected to the role unopposed for a 12 month period – pending an announcement on a proposed amalgamation with Newcastle City or Dungog Shire Council.

“It’s an interesting time for local government in NSW and unfortunately at the moment, Port Stephens are caught in the crosshairs of major reform,” Cr Doohan said.

“I’ve enjoyed working with Mayor MacKenzie and my fellow Councillors in the Deputy Mayor role over the last 12 months.

Police Remembrance Day

By Rachael VAUGHAN PORT Stephens LAC Police Officers last week attended the Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra ceremonies to commemorate Police Remembrance Day. National Police Remembrance Day is an annual event that commemorates the service

and sacrifice of the 254 members of the NSW Police Force who have lost their lives in the line of duty since the formation of the NSW Police Force in 1862.

This year, New South Wales Police Force members, colleagues, family, friends and supporters paused to remember two of their beloved policing colleagues

who passed away during the last twelve months: Curtis Cheng and Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson.

This year’s service was especially hard for our Port Stephens officers in attendance, with Geoffrey Richardson being one of our own local officers.

Craner told News Of The Area, “National Police Remembrance Day this year for Port Stephens was even more personal for the local police and community.”

“Having lost Sgt Richardson in March 2016, a number of officers attended a local Newcastle ceremony, the Sydney ceremony and National ceremony later

that day in Canberra,” he said.

Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson lost his life when the police car he was driving left the road, and crashed into a tree, on his way to assist colleagues who were engaged in a pursuit.

Frontline Warriors giving back to serving members

By Rachael VAUGHAN YOGA has long been regarded as an activity that can change your physical and mental capacity quickly, while preparing the mind and body for long-term health.

A community initiative to offer the Yoga experience to others has brought about a wonderful community endeavour called Frontline Yoga – whose sole purpose is to give back to those who dedicate their working lives to helping others.

Frontline Yoga Incorporated is a Not-forProfit Organisation that delivers Trauma Aware Yoga to members of the community at the Frontline.

Police, Paramedics, Firefighters, ADF members, Healthcare workers, SES/ RFS and Surf Life Saver volunteers are all able to access free weekly Yoga classes.

Lisette from Frontline Yoga told News Of The Area, “Yoga is not just about working out - it is about a healthy lifestyle.”

“The practice of Yoga allows students to find stillness in a world consumed with chaos - Peace and tranquillity achieved through focused training appeals to everyone, and can be especially helpful to the people we offer our free classes to,” Lisette said.

Lisette, from B~Yoga, donates an hour of her teaching each week, and Joe from Fire Yoga donates studio time. as well, so it should be a fantastic day.”

The day is part of The Community Wellbeing’s Program: ‘Step Outside the Zone’, and is one of many activities planned to bring the community together to de-stress.

The program is only run by volunteers.

“You can sit back, relax and enjoy the events being offered or jump on in and lend a hand,” said Julie.

ARCHERY at the PCYC has stepped things up a notch with their inaugural quarterly presentation.

As part of continuous quality improvement, the club members decided it would be fun to hold ‘inhouse’ competitions.

And of course that meant they would be presenting trophies.

Coach, Dave Pemberton of Medowie has been a volunteer coach at the PCYC Nelson Bay for 9 years and is driven by the kids.

“Always said if it wasn’t for keeping the kids off the street, I wouldn’t be here,” Dave said.

Dave would love to see the archery club continue to grow and new members are always

welcome.

“Trial sessions are available,” he said.

There are two groups, juniors 8 – 18 years and seniors 18 years onwards.

Apart from closed in shoes, the weekly fee covers all you need to experience archery.

The recipients of awards for this quarter are: Amber Lee, 14 years old of Medowie took out the highest weekly score at 10 metres.

Taryn, 13 years old of Medowie took out the most improved at 10 metres.

Adam, 14 years of Medowie took out highest score at 20 metres and also the Robin Hood award.

Family Fun for ‘Red Zone’ residents Medowie Lions Club are not only running the sausage sizzle but they are also catering for up to 100 people at no charge to the program or community.

THE Community Wellbeing Program, an initiative set up to help members deal with the stress of the Williamtown contamination are holding a paddle boarding family beach day.

Held this coming Sunday, 9 October the event is free and open to anyone who is living in the imposed ‘Red Zone’.

This will take place at Shoal Bay Beach, towards the Tomaree Mountain end.

The event is sponsored by Shoal

Bay SUP (stand up paddle board) and the Medowie Lions Club.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm, with paddle boards available from 11am to 2pm.

There will also be beach games such as a giant tug of war, a sausage sizzle and drinks provided.

Julie Bailey told News Of The Area, “We are so thankful for Jay and Rod from Shoal Bay SUP who have kindly provided their paddle boards and expertise for the day.”
