Best-sellers and Classic favourites By Marian SAMPSON
IF you are a bit of a bookworm you may find some kindred hearts at the Probus Club of Fingal Bay. Probus Club members enjoy meetings that include a delicious meal and a glass of wine or two, whether it is fine dining or a beachside barbecue. However, the Fingal Bay Probus Club has two regular gatherings that differ somewhat from the norm. The Mahjong Group is held on Mondays and, the Book Lovers group meet regularly in each other’s homes to compare books they’ve enjoyed, or not! Julia Redlich of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay and one of the Booklovers told News Of The Area, “ We
enjoy current best-sellers and classic favourites, some books that we read may also have a particular connection to the individual.” Ms Redlich believes that sharing about the books that we have been reading leads to sharing fascinating stories. At every Mahjong and Booklovers get together the Probus Members naturally enjoy refreshments. “Who can resist a cuppa and cake and gossip about a good book with friends?,” she said. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at The Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, at 100 Rocky Point Road Fingal Bay.

the people who are responsible for this site listen to our concerns about this eyesore.” The Tilligerry Plaza opened in 1983 with the local community welcoming the new addition to township. “We had suddenly matured to having a full supermarket and a range of specialty shops.” Mr Brooks said. Several years later the centre was destabilised by the development of the Kooindah Centre where businesses were duplicated to the detriment of all. There was much hope that the building would be revitalised in
a new role, but time has failed to deliver on this hope held by Tanilba Bay Residents. During the public meeting, residents listened to speakers and put forth questions to the representatives from Port Stephens Council who stated that Council was unaware of the community’s concerns about the abandoned site until recently. Unaware, despite quotes from Councillors and Council staff in other local newspaper reports in previous years, specifically addressing Tanilla Bay residents’ frustration with the abandoned shopping centre.
Port Stephens Council’s senior health consultant, Tristan Sullivan, has emailed Aubrey to acknowledge the concerns raised at the meeting and that they are investigating the matter. “Tanilba is the Jewel in the Crown of Port Stephens,” Aubrey Brooks told News Of The Area. “This Town belongs to you and me and we need to stand up and be counted.” H o p e f u l l y this time, his and the community’s concerns will be heard.

Help shape the future of the arts in Port Stephens ARTISTS, writers, performers and creatives are invited to help shape the future of the arts in Port Stephens by joining Council’s Strategic Arts Committee. Council is currently calling for Expressions of Interest from local residents who want to support the development of cultural and artistic programs across Port Stephens as part of the Strategic Arts 355c Committee. Acting Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Liz Akerman says this is a great opportunity for creatives to help support the arts in Port Stephens. “The arts are alive and well in Port Stephens, thanks to a diverse range of professional and community artists who are busy creating opportunities for local residents. “We’re now looking for fresh ideas and perspectives on how we can best support the arts and help develop the creative industries in Port Stephens into the future. “As a member of the Strategic Arts Committee, you would have the opportunity to

help advocate for and promote the Cultural Projects fund, which provides much-needed funding to local community driven initiatives. “Just this year, Council contributed $60,000 to local cultural projects, including visual artists, glass artists, writers, performers, singers and musicians, cartoonists and animators. We’re now seeing workshops and local events springing up across the community as a result of this funding. “Members could also be asked to provide advice on public art, and to build relationships with other community members interested in local cultural development,” she said. The next meeting of the Strategic Arts Committee will be held at 5:30pm Thursday 13 September at Raymond Terrace Library. YEAR one student, Scarlett Potter, has a heart of gold and a special new haircut. The young girl has so far raise $1,100 for the charity Variety by cutting short her extra long blonde hair. Variety, the Children’s Charity, is involved in many fundraising endeavours, one of which involves people donating their hair. Donations of hair are made into specialised wigs for those who have lost their hair due to a medical condition such as alopecia. Variety raises funds through the sale of the hair which is then used to provide equipment and services to children in need, ensuring your hair helps in more than one way. To date, Variety has received 20,302 hair donations. Scarlett was inspired to donate when she learnt about the sick children that Variety supports. She told News Of The Area, “I just want to be able to help other kids that are sick, and because it’s a nice thing to do for someone else.”
“I want to be able to share my hair with other kids who can’t grow their own.” Scarlett’s school put on an assembly for the big event, so the other students could come and cheer her on. They also interviewed Scarlett about why she was so passionate about donating her hair. She spoke to her teachers and fellow classmates about her decisions, and addressed them confidently and maturely.

until recently they were forced to change into their safety gear and be briefed for their missions on the dock, often in bad weather. Colin Foote of Marine Rescue Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “We need to raise an additional $150,000 each year to keep the two boats on the water and run the radio base, it costs around $200 per hour per vessel during each call out that Marine Rescue responds to.” The team at Marine Rescue has just released

their two year dream to commission a floating dock where they can store their safety gear, change and conduct their briefings. The floating dock was custom built by local company Varley Group and was kicked off by a NSW Clubs Grant through Wests Diggers, Nelson Bay. This week the NSW Government has kicked in an additional $10,000 grant towards the floating dock.
The dock is believed to be the only one of its kind and has only been possible through generous donations and support from Marine Rescue Port Stephens patrons and volunteers. Duty MLC for Port Stephens Catherine Cusack and Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens Jaimie Abbott toured the facility and met long term volunteers and the vessel crews. Tony O’Donnell of Marine Rescue said, “When it comes to performing a rescue, we don’t judge, we
just go.” Liberal candidate for Port Stephens, Jaimie Abbott said, “Marine Rescue Port Stephens responds to an average of 300 incidents every year, making their service vital in our community.” While Marine Rescue does ask for donations from those who use their services they only recover approximately 40 percent of the cost of each rescue from the vessels and crews they save.
Kris Abbott, Council’s Library Services Manager, says the library is more than just a place to borrow books.
IT has been five years since Raymond Terrace Library was relocated from Port Stephens Street to its new modern and spacious facility at Sturgeon Street in 2013. Kris Abbott, Council’s Library Services Manager, says the library is more than just a place to borrow books. “Libraries are valuable
centres of information for our community, and also play an important social role in many people’s lives. Whether they are students, young families, new residents or older Australians, libraries really do bring people together,” Ms Abbott said. “I can’t believe it has already been five years since we moved to our
new premises on Sturgeon Street! Our community has certainly enjoyed having three times the space to read and relax, as well as meeting and study rooms, a courtyard, a café, and wireless internet.” The Library had a special morning tea on Monday to celebrate the milestone.

Community Rallies for Farmers By Marian SAMPSON
INSPIRATION is driving our local Rotarians to work in creative ways to change the fate of NSW farmers who are doing it tough. Tough times on the land, mean tough times for families and the retailers in local communities. Children miss out on excursions, everyone feels the pinch from young to old. Salamander Bay Rotary Club President Ina George told News Of The Area, “We have raised over $6,000 in just 6 weeks and have had some great support from the retailers at Salamander Village Shops and at a Bunnings barbeque.” The Rotarians believe that it is important to alleviate the problems faced by the farmers and their communities and are raising funds to make a difference, making sure that their work bolsters local communities and doesn’t impact on struggling retailers. “The club is providing fuel and food vouchers to farmers located close to the Hunter that are in need,” she said. Vouchers support those in need without impacting adversely on other local
businesses. Nelson Bay Rotary President Kathy Rimmer said, “People just want to help.” The Nelson Bay Club are working with the Rotary Club of Narromine, supporting 53 students at a school in rural Tottenham, paying for these children to go on school excursions. “The club has raised $9745.45 so far to support farmers dealing with the drought through barbeques held at Salamander Bay Shopping Centre. “We are also partnering with L J Hooker and the Humpty Dumpty Foundation contributing and additional $2000 to fund a jaundice detector for children for the hospital,” she said. Funds donated to Rotary are administration fee free, so every dollar raised goes to those most in need. The community of Port Stephens has certainly been one that has dug deep to support those living through the drought on the land with the Medowie Bale Out, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, schools and other groups all doing their bit to support people in the bush living in crisis.

Young Sports Stars Recognised By Rachael VAUGHAN
SPORTS stars in the making across Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley were awarded this week for their efforts in their chosen sport. Paterson MP Meryl Swanson invited young sportsmen and women aged between 12 and 18 to apply for grants of up to $500 to help them continue to achieve at the highest level. This Australian Government initiative offers successful young athletes, coaches and officials money that can be used towards the cost of travel, accommodation or equipment. “I’m delighted to again be able to offer this wonderful opportunity to the young sports men and women of Paterson,” Meryl Swanson said. “To date we’ve been able
to honour and encourage the achievements of boys and girls in sports from motorcycling to diving to ice skating, and everything in between.” “Money has flowed to children from the coalfields of Kurri Kurri down to Fern Bay right out to beautiful Nelson Bay and we’ve been able to help individual and team achievers receive a welcome financial kickalong to help meet the costs associated in competing at representative level,” she said. To be considered, young people had to meet a number of criteria. The event must be an official national sporting organisation endorsed state, national or international championship, or a School Sport Australia state, national or international championship, and applicants must live more

Critical habitat for Park Native Fauna Given a helping hand at Boomerang Park
RAYMOND Terrace Parks Reserves and Tidy Town Committee (RTPRTT) are creating critical habitat for native fauna in Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace. The community event
which kicked off the initiative took place on 30 August attracted over 25 people. The event was part of NSW Sustaining Landcare Week, in which Landcare
Groups across the state host field days with the local MPs to celebrate the achievements of Landcare. Spokesperson for the Group told News Of The Area “We want
to encourage the State Government to continue to fund Landcare projects into the future as it is a small cost for huge benefit to our communities.” The Group wants to
Langius, Dallas Johnson, Abigail Teah-Wilson, Hallam Ingram, Buckley Ingram, Lachlan Tresidder, Joshua Bruton, Benjamin Hudson, Benjamin Crebert,
encourage more wildlife into the bushland area and restore the ecosystem so that people can come to this park to enjoy all the nature has to offer. On the day, over 200 native plants were planted to improve bird habitat, various hollow logs were strategically placed for small mammals such as
Cooper Greedy, Shannon Threlfo, Darcy Blackmore, Joshua Bohan, Taleah Dodd, Ryvah Shoesmith, Liam Dixon, Rebekah Holt and Monty Dixon.
echidnas, antechinus, bandicoots to find shelter and also a specific type of nest box for the sugar glider was installed. The koala has not used the area in several years but the Group hopes to change that by developing a wildlife corridor to create important linkages.

Help - My friend is a real estate agent – do I have to use them? GF Medowie
CHOOSING your real estate agent is an important step in the selling process and must be considered carefully. It can be awkward when you have a friend who is an agent and you feel as though you should use them to sell your home. Remember that your home is usually your largest asset and therefore you need to have the best person for the job representing you. If you do have someone whom you consider to be a friend and is also a real estate agent I would suggest that you try to take a step back and interview them along with other real estate agents as well. Ask all of your agents what it is that they offer in experience, proven sales, marketing skills and work ethic. When they provide you with their market appraisal of your home, ask them how they have come up with the pricing that they have. Check all of the agents profiles online and also customer reviews of their service. Remember that at the end
of the day you are seeking the best person to sell your home not doing a friend a favour. Tough question but hope that helps. Denise
Dear Jasminda,
Our neighbours have 10 cats and they skulk along our fence line trying to catch our kookaburras and lorikeets. They haven’t caught any birds yet, but it’s only a matter of time. What should we do?
Shame local business was not involved
Dear News Of The Area,
I UNDERSTAND there is a TV show currently being filmed in Medowie which involves the building of a house to raise money for a children’s charity. I also understand from your publication that ‘100% of the materials, labour, furniture and furnishings are donated. It is disappointing to say
the least to learn that only one of the contractors involved in the build is local. I believe even the Rotary van on site is not from the local area. Medowie has recently demonstrated amazing community spirit by coming together to raise around $70,000 for drought relief and the local businesses involved
have been duly recognised for their participation. In light of this effort it seems remarkably disappointing and somewhat inappropriate that local businesses have not even been invited to donate to, or be involved in this worthy building project.

Aussie Croquet C’ships By Margie TIERNEY
PLAYERS from around Australia will be head just up the raod to Hawks Nest next week to compete in event as part of the Australian Golf Croquet Championships. This year the Hunter region is hosting games at Bateau Bay, Branxton, Maitland, Myall Park, Newcastle and Toronto. A total of 92 players are competing in the
Championships with eight men coming to Myall Park for a single’s event. “This is an opportunity to see some very talented competitors, playing this great game,” Sue Dodds said. “It’s a once in a lifetime

chance, with spectators welcome, even for a short time,” Sue said. The competition kicks off at 8.30am at the Yamba Street Croquet home in Hawks Nest on Monday 10 September.
Mr LG, Medowie Mr LG, I can understand your distress here. There is nothing sweeter than the sound of a kookaburra cackling away, or the sight of a mob of lorikeets diving into a birdbath. Your yard sounds like a sanctuary. Of course you want to enjoy it and keep your feathered friends safe.. Ten cats? That seems somewhat excessive. It that even legal? If so, do your neighbours lock up the little treasures at night? Do they have bells around their scrawny little hunter-gatherer necks (the cats, not the neighbours)? Do they seem approachable (the neighbours, not the cats)? The problem here is that the cats are just doing what cats do. Cats have mannerisms that would seem antisocial in most humans. They bring rancid rats to the doorstep, they spray their scent on curtains, they lick their private parts in public, they cough up fur balls and they claw the bejesus out of your legs when they’re trying to get comfortable. They also instinctively kill or maim, though not necessarily eat, other living things. Don’t let those cute YouTube cat videos fool you. Cats are murderers with foul habits. Have you ever looked into the eyes of a cat, Mr LG? Those eyes are satanic. I do, however, have a very simple solution for you. In the great food chain of life, you simply need to insert your own predator. I would suggest a dog. Not a poky little puppy, but a threatening Rottweiler named Fang with a studded black collar and one of those prisoner restraint masks made fashionable by Hannibal Lecter. If you don’t want the expense of a dog, maybe you could wear the collar and mask as your standard weekend attire when you’re watering the plants (and the cats) along the fence line. Have Nickelback’s ‘Figured You Out’ streaming from the speakers. I think your neighbours will get the message. And the cats. Cats and irresponsible neighbours are not subtle creatures. You need to speak in a language that everyone understands. Comprende? Carpe diem, Jasminda.

By Rachael VAUGHAN ARJ Barker is back in town, and he’s our pick for entertainment this week around Port Stephens and the Myall Coast. With his brand new show ‘We need to talk’, he’s guaranteed to put on a great night out for all, when he hits the stage this Friday night at Nelson Bay Diggers. Quite often the phrase ‘we need to talk’ comes when we need to engage in serious conversation.
Anna Bay Tavern
Shoal Bay Country Club Seabreeze Hotel
Arj believes ‘we need to talk’ about our interactions as humans, and there is a theme to parts of the show around technology and how the world has changed in the last 20 years as a result of the internet and our endless access to it from smartphones. “It’s a serious chat about humanity,” Barker explained. “About what we’re doing here and where we’re going, are we going in the right direction with technology - that sort of thing.”
8.30pm 8.00pm 8.30pm 9.00pm 6.30pm
“I’m quite happy with this one,” Barker said of the new show. “I think as jokes go it’s some of my best writing and I think audiences to this show can expect better than ever Arj.” “When I look back at my first DVD, Live [2006], to now I’m a much better performer and writer, more refined, so come along and catch me at my best,” he said.

q Arj Barker brings his new show to Nelson Bay Diggers this Friday night.
THE Medowie Neighbourhood Watch (MNW) this week launched their long awaited Security Camera Loan scheme for local residents. Neighbourhood Watch members have tirelessly fundraised to purchase these cameras,
and also received support from Deputy Mayor and Councillor Chris Doohan. Chris told News Of The Area, “I was more than happy to support the Neighbourhood Watch volunteers with this important project to assist our local residents who might be experiencing some concerns on their property to feel safer in
their own homes and properties.” “I put forward my application for funding to contribute to the purchase of the first cameras, and I’m pumped to see the scheme launch as a result.” “I look forward to the feedback from residents on this fantastic community, volunteer initiative,” he said.
Residents wishing to hire a camera will be given an agreement to sign that outlines the rules around the footage recorded on the cameras. The next Medowie Neighbourhood Watch meeting on Wednesday 31 October at 7:30pm in the Medowie Community Hall.
