Rotary Club’s Christmas Carols A Huge Success By Heather SHARP

ROTARY’S annual Medowie Christmas Carols, held at Ferodale Oval in Medowie on Friday night, was a resounding success. Light rain earlier in the evening did not deter the crowds with well over 1000 people in attendance. School groups provided much of the entertainment, along with soloist Miss Laura Yeomans, and a special Christmas message from the Overflow Church’s Pastor David Deal. President of the Rotary Club, Mr Geoffrey Hamilton, with his team of volunteers, did a wonderful job of coordinating the event. Mr Hamilton told Medowie News Of The Area, “It’s been a wonderful evening, definitely a success.”

affected people to have their blood tested and participate in the epidemiological study. She also reiterated her call for air testing in the

contaminated zone, given that some residents had already registered high levels of PFAS in their blood, despite following precautions not to

drink bore water or eat home grown vegetables and eggs. “I would challenge the view of the Department of Health that the ‘extent

of contamination and the exposure pathways are well understood’,” Ms Swanson said. “There are some in the

red zone who remained unconvinced that breathing in dust is not an exposure

Dr Paul Burford told Medowie News Of The Area, “We are a community focused practice.” “As a group we would like to help as many families as possible.” From 1 December until Christmas Eve the public can donate unwrapped toys and place it under Dr Burford’s Christmas tree. The Salvation Army will then collect the toys and distribute them to children in need to make this festive season a little bit brighter. Dr Burford, on behalf of the staff, also expressed to Medowie News Of The Area, “We would like to thank Medowie and the surrounding communities for the overwhelming support they have shown Central Health Alliance this year.” “We would like to wish everyone a safe and a very Merry Christmas.”

Celebrating Volunteers on the UN International Volunteer Day By Heather SHARP

VOLUNTEERS make a positive contribution to society, frequently in

volunteers do in a range of organisations across the world. Medowie is a small community, but one with many volunteers, who contribute in a range of significant ways. One Medowie man deserving of the recognition that the UN aims to bring about is Mr Graham Howlett. If you have attended or participated in an event in and around Medowie and the Newcastle/Hunter area, you may have come across Mr Howlett, a first aider with the St John Ambulance. Amazingly, he has been a volunteer with St John Ambulance for 57 years, joining as a young man of 17. During 2016 he has chalked up an amazing 838 hours, broken down as 688 duty hours doing first aid for events and 150 hours voluntary training, where Mr Howlett teaches others and completes administrative record keeping. COMING from four generations of fishermen, John Wisby has relocated the family business to his portable truck in Salt Ash. Originally from Tasmania, John moved here to be closer to his family and try his luck in the Prawn industry. Running the two biggest fish factories in Tasmania for over 20 years, prawns and oysters were a welcome change from the lobsters and scallops that are common in the South. The weather here is a lot more welcoming to prawns, as is the high demand. John told News Of The Area, “It’s been very beneficial for me to continue the business in NSW and I really like the warm weather compared to the freezing

cold in Tasmania.” John has been working out of his truck at Paul’s Corner, near the BP at Salt Ash for two-and-a-half years now, and is preparing for the extremely high demand that will come with his third Christmas here. He works every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and every second Sunday. John’s brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and now nephews have all been professional fishermen, with his brother also pursuing professional fishing in Port Stephens. John sources only Australian prawns, sourced locally from Wickham, and oysters from leases in the Port Stephens area. “Over the last two-and-ahalf years, I’ve had no issues with the locals, as they always

make me feel very welcome,” he said. “It’s nice to have regular customers and ‘tradies’ that buy off me a few times a week, always with a laugh and a joke.”

motivated person who likes meeting and helping people by passing on the knowledge and skills that I have learnt over the years.” Mr Howlett combined his paid employment with volunteering for many years, exclusively telling part of his volunteering story to Medowie News Of The Area, “On my days off and after work I was able to do my St John volunteering.” “When I left the ambulance service I went into the mines as an underground mine bricklayer and then became a volunteer rescue person with Newcastle Mines Rescue which gave me more flexibility for time.” “After the recovery of the West Wallsend incident I was invited to join the permanent Mines Rescue as an employee.” “I gained my deputy’s ticket and continued with my voluntary work.” St John Ambulance is always on the lookout for volunteers. Councils Combat Dumping PORT Stephens Council has joined forces with Hunter Councils in a new campaign to reduce the amount of illegal dumping in the region. Hunter Councils’ regional waste education

financial year there were approximately 2,000 recorded incidents of illegal dumping that caused significant damage to natural habitats and community facilities. The campaign features billboards and bus back advertising to promote the message that the natural environment is no place to dispose of unwanted goods. “The campaign material has also been placed on Hunter Councils’ new look Small Acts Big Change website – the Hunter community’s go to website on how to minimise waste – as well as on our Facebook page,” Ms Sage said. “The ads promote people’s

of the Government’s management of PFAS contamination being escalated to his department, a fact I learned in Parliament on Monday from a Government MP when I tabled my motion on the subject,” Ms Swanson said. Ms Swanson encouraged anyone considering blood testing to read the health advice closely, talk it over with their GP, and take advantage of mental health support on offer.
