GROUPS from Medowie, Williamtown and the Tilligerry Peninsula joined the nation wide yearly Clean Up Australia Day event last weekend in impressive numbers. Williamtown McDonald’s organised a group of volunteers to tackle several areas around the town with a good turn out. Tilligerry Peninsula put on a great event, with a large turn out of community members and group volunteers who tackle some big areas, including RAF Park, Henderson Park, the duck pond and volunteers by boat who went out to Bull Island. They joined together for a well earned break for lunch at Lemon Tree Passage waterfront. Medowie again hosted a successful group with

Olivia’s big chop for Variety
By Rachael VAUGHAN
OLIVIA Berger’s impressive fundraising journey has wound up this week with a very special hair cut. The six year old Wirreanda Public School student chopped her locks after fundraising for the last few weeks to raise much needed funds for ‘Variety - the Children’s Charity. Olivia was inspired to begin this journey to donate her hair after a classmate in preschool donated his hair after the

There was an excellent roll up from the Medowie Scouts and Cubs, as well as community members and nearly a dozen members of the Medowie Tidy Towns group. Geoff Dingle from Medowie Tidy Towns told
loss of his mum. Olivia set her original goal at $750, but quickly smashed that goal and came to a total donation of $2396.93 as it stood on the day of the big chop. Variety have stated that wigs can cost families up to $6,000 and Olivia’s hair is sure to become part of a very beautiful wig for a special young person. As the last plait was cut, Olivia shouted to the crowd of onlookers “I’m a new Liv” and how true is that statement, not only for her, but for the recipient of her beautiful hair. News Of The Area, “This year we had participation from a number of residents in Turnberry Lane Pacific Dunes so the challenge goes out for next year to Medowie residents to form a team and clean up their own residential streets.” “Great to report that this year’s volumes of rubbish in parks and reserves appears to be down on last year, this could reflect a hot summer but we like to think it also reflects a responsible community that cares about its environment and appearance.” “One of our brave community volunteers put on his waders and took to Tallowwood pond to retrieve numerous old bike frames and tyres that have rotted

They too will be a whole new person, hopefully feeling much more confident and happy, and all because of one little girl. Olivia’s mother, Kelly Berger, told News Of The Area, “As a mother she has made me so proud and gives me a sense that I must be doing something right.” “Fundraising these past weeks has made me realise how wonderful the Medowie community is, and i would like to thank everyone who has donated and supported Olivia in her mission to help ‘every girl feel pretty’ like she wanted.” in this popular duck feeding pond, so well done completing a smelly job, but much needed clean-up, a great outcome.” During the collection Medowie Tidy Towns members noted building waste dumping on Councils land next to Muir Rd, which is currently on the market for expressions of interest, this has been reported to Councils compliance staff. It is wonderful to see this event still going strong in it’s 27th year. Residents are encouraged to get involved next year by checking on the Clean Up Australia website to search using your postcode for an event near you.

Lisa Looks Back THE 7 May 1983 is etched firmly in the mind of Lisa Henderson. On that day, along with the wider Henderson family, the somewhat shy little girl tugged at a cord. This released a naval ensign covering a freshly erected sign. The bushfire station in Lemon Tree Passage was thus renamed in memory of her father. The crowd of family, friends and firies then moved on to the waterfront where the same process was repeated. The park there was named after him
as well. That’s not all. A rest area at the golf club was also dedicated to his memory as was a perpetual trophy. You see, Bernie Henderson had suffered a fatal heart attack while clearing the fairways. Fittingly, Stuart, Bernie’s son was the inaugural winner of that trophy. Not so long ago, after the now amalgamated Tilligerry Rural Fire Service moved in to its new million dollar station, the old Lemon Tree Passage building was given over to the local Arts group and
renamed. The firies donated the old sign to Lisa as custodian. This way it would stay within the Henderson family. Lisa, now 43 and a mother of two boys, looks back fondly to her happy childhood and the old fire station. “The locals built it themselves,” she said. “Any group could use it and I remember the jumble sales and Mr West, a fireman, turned it into a movie theatre of a Saturday afternoon.” Ms Henderson said, “I’ve

ALYSHA Fewster has been inspired by bushland cubby houses at Medowie to form part of her honours thesis centred on ‘Outdoor Play.’ “I really didn’t know which direction to take at the end of my schooling so I enrolled in a fine arts degree – and loved it,” she told News Of The Area. Now, with a first class honours degree under her belt, Alysha she has exhibited a series of one metre square conceptual prints which invite the viewer to reflect on their relationship with the environment. Her works have appeared in galleries at Cooks Hill and Perth. Currently she volunteers at Newcastle Art Gallery to promote youth engagement with art as well as working as a swim school coordinator at Tilligerry Aquatic Centre. That’s not all! Legacy Awards Student Achievement Port Stephen Legacy Group Awards Student Achievement
By Marian SAMPSON
ELLIE Wagland has been presented with the Port Stephens Legacy Group (PSLG) Further Education Scholarship for outstanding academic results in the HSC 2017. More than 1,000 students from Tomaree High School (THS) were on hand to see Ellie Wagland, presented with the Port Stephens Legacy Group (PSLG) Award. Ellie received the Award for having attained the school’s highest Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) with a result of 96.25 for 2017 and also being named Tomaree High School’s Dux for that year. PSLG Chairman, Doug Jacka, congratulated Ellie and presented her with the inaugural PSLG Alan Hudson OAM and Bart
Richardson OAM Award and a cheque for $1000 for her outstanding academic results. Ellie is now enrolled at Macquarie University. The award was established to honor the service to the community of two of the original founder Legates Alan Hudson OAM and Bart Richardson OAM, in 2017. Legate Doug Jacka told News Of The Area, “Both men were veterans of World War II. Both were involved in Legacy for many years. In the Nelson Bay, Fingal Bay, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay and Tilligerry Peninsula areas, PSLG assists nearly 260 people who look to Legacy for varying levels of support, advice and social interaction. Most are elderly ladies
but, sadly, there is now a need to help families of our service people from more recent hostilities and peace-keeping operations. “We are most grateful for the support we continually receive from Tomaree High School, its students and staff, for the invaluable, cheerful and willing assistance from the school during our fundraising badge days. “The Education Achievement Award goes some way towards showing our appreciation to Tomaree High School,” he said. Sue Xenos, Principal of Tomaree High School said, “The school is very proud of the achievements of all our graduating students, & students like Ellie highlight the success being achieved by our students & teachers.”

Dear Jasminda,
Round-About Time for Tilly
A TANILBA Bay black spot is about to become safer, with the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Lemon Tree Passage Road and Avenue of the Allies set to begin later this month. Port Stephens Council successfully applied for funding to upgrade the intersection under the NSW Government Safer Roads Program. Rick Mackenzie, Council’s Civil Projects Engineer, says the new roundabout is designed to create a safer intersection for all users. “This intersection has been identified as a black spot due to the number of crashes that have happened here over the years,” Mr Mackenzie said. “Council has been successful in receiving funding from the State Government to build a roundabout, which is designed to reduce drivers’ speed and, in turn, reduce the number and severity of incidents,” he said. “There will be a few changes for drivers to get used to – the main one
being the realignment of Success Street and Lemon Tree Passage Road, which will provide a safer exit for drivers entering Success Street,” he added. Mr Mackenzie says the works are scheduled to begin from late March. “We’re expecting the project to get underway at the end of this month, with works scheduled to take about 12 weeks depending on the weather,” he said. “During the construction, Lemon Tree
Passage road will remain open with reduced speed limits, but the entry to Poilus Parade and Avenue of the Allies will be inaccessible – drivers will instead be diverted to enter via President Wilson Walk. “We ask that people are patient during the construction period and drive to the conditions. “I’d encourage anyone who wants to learn more to come along to the community drop-in session on Friday 16 March at the Kooindah Centre,” he added.
q Round-about map.
My husband watched a movie recently about two men who knew they were close to death and therefore created a bucket list. Now he has this grand idea that we should do the same. He wants to go snorkel diving with stingrays, climb snow capped mountains and various other things we have no time or money for. I’m at a loss as to how I should deal with this. Please help! Mrs HA, Bagnalls Beach Dear Mrs HA,
Good Lord. Okay, initially I thought this was a bit of a disaster. On closer inspection, I now realise that you have been offered a blessing in disguise. Many of us get stuck in a rut, Mrs HA. We work, we buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have, we gossip about people who don’t deserve to be gossiped about, and we complain about first world problems such as having to scan our own grocery items. These are not problems; they are reminders that we have the capacity to make choices in a country that is relatively prosperous and laid back. I don’t want to get all Louise Hay on you and start chanting affirmations, but health is the number one priority. Anything else is a bonus. If you and your husband are well enough to swim with stingrays or dance up and down alps like the Von Trapp family, I say go for it. Don’t wait until you get a poor diagnosis like the characters from your movie. The other advantage is that your husband has watched what seems to be an inspirational, feel good, family-friendly flick. Now if he’d watched Pulp Fiction, he may be suggesting that you snort coke and become hitmen. Or if he’d watched Vikings, maybe you’d need to go through your kid’s dress-up box for some faux fur and swords. What if he’d been inspired by Forrest Gump and you had to run for miles and/or buy a prawn trawler. I reckon you’ve gotten off pretty lightly, Mrs HA. Make the most of it. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Salt Ash Leaders By Rachael VAUGHAN
IT is Salt Ash Public School’s turn to proudly showcase their 2018 school leaders. Lucian Knight, Gabby Rooney, Joanna Booth and Patrick Slade will lead their school this year with confidence, and will no doubt do their school, families and themselves proud. Their roles at school will include; planning, collecting information for and running school assemblies, attending ceremonies throughout the year like ANZAC and presentation days, raising and lowering the flags each day, being a voice for the students and communicating with staff. Salt Ash is a wonderfully small, community minded school with strong values. They have an enrolment of
90 students. Consisting of four classes K/1, 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. They implement the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework, where the expectations of all students is that they are Positive Respectful and Safe Learners. They also have a dedicated wellbeing program called ‘You Can Do It’, that explicitly teaches students the Keys to Success in being Persistent, Organised, Resilient, Confident and Getting Along. As well as curriculum focused academic activities, all students have to opportunity to be involved in many extracurricular activities including Star Struck, choir, dance group, a large variety of sporting teams, leadership programs and many more. The school has a thorough

transition program that occurs at both ends of the primary school scale with kindergarten and high school transition always a very smooth process. Relieving Principal Ms Holly Deguara told News Of The Area, “I am really enjoying being Principal of Salt Ash Public School.” “It is such a wonderful small school, with brilliant students and devoted staff.” “We have a hard working parent body who are dedicated to all school events and projects and we are working on bringing even more of the community into the school, developing positive and strong partnerships with the local community,” she said. Well done, congratulations and good luck to the School Leaders of this very special school.

She told News Of The Area, “It was pretty exciting knowing that I had received one of the scholarships, but listening to the backgrounds of all the other recipients that night was amazing and everyone truly deserved to be awarded with the scholarships.” “Mine will definitely assist me in purchasing textbooks each semester.” Taylah has big plans for the future, telling us, “My interest to choose my degree came from the subjects I chose to study at school in year 11 & 12, such as business studies and legal studies, my teachers made it really easy for me to understand and enjoy my classes so I decided to try and continue that into university which led me to pick a Bachelor of Business/ Bachelor of Commerce Combined.” Tyess Cook from Medowie told News Of The Area, “I applied because it was a great financial boost to assist me in purchasing items
such as textbooks, uniforms, stethoscope and course fees and I’m greatly appreciative towards Hunter Ready Mix Concrete for sponsoring the scholarship.” “I have moved to Port Macquarie and am Studying a Bachelor of Paramedicine, at Charles Sturt University.” “I hope to one day work for the NSW ambulance in the Hunter and Port Stephens area, which I’ve always had a passion for, whilst being able to also come back and serve my community,” he said. Other students from Medowie and Tilligerry included; Caitlin Field from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at University of Newcastle, Joshua Archer from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Engineering University of Newcastle, Justine Bull from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Engineering at University of Newcastle, and Tahlia Madeline MarksWoolley from Mallabula studying a Bachelor of Laws at University of Newcastle,

of the art sound system. James has and will continue to cater for a huge list of venues week after week. From wall to wall crammed pubs to laid back cafes and functions for all ages. James fell in love with Music at the age of 12 or so and begged his parents for guitar tuition. Jamie said, “I thankfully had a disciplined tutor who taught strict reading music much to my disappointment at the time, but as soon as I began playing, I was writing my own music and lyrics.” The love for music became permanent, and Jamie longed to make it his career. Jamie said, “As life went on I became frustrated with the mundane working to pay the bills life and left my job to pursue my dreams, and I haven’t looked back.” “I have never given up on this dream and now here I am doing it.”
“I am truly doing this for myself but I dearly hope you enjoy it,” he said. Nelson Bay Bowling Club
is a venue that has something for everyone, and it’s the place to be this weekend if you want to enjoy a relaxing night out.
