Santa making an Early Visit q Santa and his friends from the Williamtown RAAF base.

SANTA and all his friends are making an early visit this Sunday to kick start the spirit of Christmas.

We have seen Santa flown in by the Helicopter, hitch a ride in

the Batmobile, and this year it’s the RAAF Base transporting Santa in a Bushmaster Troop Carrier to Raymond Terrace.

The Irrawang High School

Drum Corp will lead the parade, followed by local schools and dance groups, along with a cast of characters including Chase and Marshall from PAW Patrol,

Batman, Bumblebee, Deadpool, Astro Boy, the Nutcracker, Frosty the Snowman, and a Christmas Bunny.

The parade will travel down

Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s an exciting time for Port Stephens.

“This year we are investing more than $25 million in projects for

KINDLEBARK Oval is known as the home of Little Athletics in Medowie.

Kindlebark is set to thrive after Medowie Little Athletics was successful in their Hunter Water ‘Love Water’ Grant proposal.

The Club is one of nine successful community and civic organisations who will share in the $50,000 oneoff Grant funding.

Funding of $10,000 will assist the Club to install rainwater tanks, to capture water from the Clubhouse roof and to install irrigation infrastructure along the track.

The project will see the most used section of the athletics track irrigated with pop up sprinklers, resulting in a healthier playing surface.

President of the Club, Jason Wells told News Of The Area, “The project will see half of our track being irrigated during the driest part of the year – without using a drop of town water.”

NEWS Of The Area was proud to team up with Medowie Neighbourhood Watch to sponsor this year’s Medowie Safe Streets Halloween campaign, along with fellow sponsors ‘Flourish Naturally Clinic and Remedial Massage’ and ‘Moore than Melts and Scents’ This year’s balloon buckets, offering a balloon and safety message to any household wanting to participate, saw over 600 balloons taken by residents of Medowie to place on their letterboxes.

These balloons were available in a packet, and placed at Coles, Woolworths, Little Pantry Co and Rose & Fig Cafe.

created the increasingly popular private map, using Google Maps, to show parents of any young trick or treater where the Halloween friendly houses were in the community, making the private link available within the group on the morning of Halloween.

Feedback from the evening was almost entirely positive, with reports of over 300 children in some parts of Medowie trick or treating.

Medowie Neighbourhood Watch met for their bimonthly meeting following Halloween, and were pleased with the success of the event.

The Neighbourhood Watch group were pleased to support the balloon campaign again this year, in its fourth year of being run in Medowie.

FLORENCE Humphreys is a woman of many talents.

Not only a keen gardener, with garden clubs visiting her home to peruse her collections, Florence is also a talented painter of a number of different styles and mediums.

Every wall in Florence’s home is adorned with her artwork, each piece telling a different, special story that Florence rejoices in sharing with visitors.

Following on from the success of her art show in the Hunter Botanical Gardens last year, Florence is back this year with another showing of her beautiful works.

Florence has been drawing most of her life, but began painting in earnest in her thirties, which Florence told News Of The Area, “Was a hobby that quickly got out out hand.”

Florence added, “I’m excited to have this new q Florence Humphreys at her home in her studio with some of her art pieces.

“I would love to see some new faces come along to the gardens, take a look at my art and enjoy a morning tea from the cafe or a stroll through the gardens while they are there.”

Whilst Florence’s art exhibition is largely the stunning wildflowers that she has become known for as an artist, her showing will also include some pieces up for sale in styles that followers of Florence’s work may not have seen before.

One such piece of work, a painting of Florence’s great grandmother ‘Granny Bowd’ is a striking art piece that truly shows Florence’s versatility.

The community can visit Florence’s exhibition, with free entry, at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens on the Pacific Highway at Heatherbrae.

The exhibition will run from 1-30 November.

Bridge Club Trumps

THE Tomaree Bridge Club hosted players from the Hunter, Central Coast, Sydney and even Qld. at the annual Tomaree Bridge Congress.

On day one, 46 pairs competed in a Swiss Pairs competition with Patricia Grigson and Titus Ling from Pennant Hills Bridge Club holding the winning pair.

Locals Sue McMahon and

Judy Payne came in, in third position and were the best pair from Tomaree Bridge Club.

Day two saw 136 players competing in a teams event which was won by Chris Williams (Toronto B.C.), Jan

Grandparents Support Group celebrates Carers Week

ON 26 October, Samaritans Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay ‘Grandparents as Parents’ groups hosted a special lunch in celebration of Carers Week 2018.

The event was held at the Macadamia Nut Farm in Medowie with grandparent and kinship carers from the region attending on the day.

Program Coordinator, Heather Robinson, said, “Samaritans Raymond Terrace group has been running for 11 years

and this celebration will also recognise this achievement.”

“The long-service of these group has offered a significant amount of support to carers in Port Stephens who have found themselves caring for their grandchildren or relatives,” she said.

“Carers Week is also a great opportunity to think about how you might be able to support a carer in your life- perhaps it’s

sharing a cup of coffee, a phone call or you might consider becoming a facilitator to support one of our support groups,” Heather said.

Samaritans Grandparents as Parents groups are currently seeking additional volunteers to assist in the facilitation of community groups to provide a welcoming space for sharing information, lots of laughs and support to Kinship Carers.

A total of 48 members & wives were coached to Taree, with Port Stephens Coaches. Where we then boarded the Manning River Cruise.

This was a delightful 4-hour luncheon cruise.

We headed towards Old Bar and cruised around Oxley & Mitchell Islands and Croki.

Morning tea was served with beautiful fresh scones. Lunch was a lovely baked dinner and deserts.

The day was perfect, we saw different birds some of them fly from Siberia to nest here. The cruise opened our eyes as to the size of the Manning River system.

The Manning River has 2 outlets to the ocean.

In all it was a cracker of a day.

A DAY of Reflection THIS Sunday marks 100 years since the Armistice of World War I and the beginning of Remembrance Day, as a day of reflection.

Originally called Armistice Day, Remembrance Day commemorates the day the guns fell silent and the Great War, known today as World War I, came to an end. The end of hostilities was official with the signing of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Unfortunately, the “War to end all Wars” did not end global conflict with World War II commencing only two decades later.

After the end of World War II in 1945, the Australian and British Governments decided to change the name from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day as they felt it was a more appropriate day to commemorate all of those who had died during times of war.

It is tradition, that on this day, a one minute’s silence be observed at 11am in memory of those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Remembrance Day is also observed by the wearing of red poppies on shirts, jackets

and other articles of clothing.

SLEEP deprivation is horrendous whether it is from working night shifts, waiting up for wayward teenagers or looking after an elderly relative. A newborn takes it to a whole new level. The exhaustion can make you feel as though you are walking on air.

Your brain doesn’t run on all cylinders and it can be hard to have the energy to find things as pleasurable as usual because you are just too fatigued.

My advice would be to let normality fly out the window for a few months. Sleep when the baby sleeps, take up babysitting offers while you get some rest, accept meals and be a bit kind to yourself. Don’t try to be Wonder Woman because from memory she didn’t have a screaming baby, mastitis and vomit-stained clothes to contend with.

That feeling of sinking into an exhausted stupor can take the shine off motherhood.

I remember in those days feeling like I could give my babies to the highest bidder, or even the lowest bidder, in fact on some days I would have gratefully paid someone to take the darlings off my hands for a week. My daughter, an insomniac, almost broke me. At three am I’d say to my husband, ‘Take her away’ and to his credit he would walk our daughter around the neighbourhood or dance with her to Rage, which is probably why she now knows so many song lyrics.

This too shall pass, Mrs KF. My children are now teenagers and would happily sleep until midday if I let them. Life is calm again, well it was, until I did something really stupid and bought a puppy.

This year we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, to remember over 65,000 australians who were killed and hundreds of thousands more who were wounded. many of these men and women came from our local areas.

Members, serving and ex-personnel, friends and the community are reminded of and are invited to the Memorial Service to be held in Apex Park, Nelson Bay at 10:45am on Sunday, 11th November 2018.

On Sunday 11th november, a combined march including ex-service, school and community groups from Tea Gardens, Karuah and surrounding areas will form up on marine Parade in front of the Tea Gardens Hotel from 9.45am.

The march, commencing at 10am, will be followed by a Service at anzac Park on marine Parade, Tea Gardens. all ex-service personnel, together with members of the public are encouraged to attend and support this special event.

Nundle Trip for Probus Club

IN many ways the Fingal Bay Probus Club members are getting more out of life, and one way they are doing this is to travel together.

Sixteen members of the Probus Club recently went on a five-day trip to explore the

fascinating old gold-mining town of Nundle.

While some of the Probus Club members took their caravans, other members stayed in comfortable cabins for the trip at the Fossickers Tourist Park.

told News Of The Area, “The days were well planned in advance by Roy and Geraldine Jeffery and Ross Jennings, providing visits, activity and fun, including a visit to Nundle Woollen Mill where the Probus Club members made some lovely purchases and eyed the covetable items

in an antique shop before enjoying lunch at Jenkins Street Restaurant.”

The historical cemetery at Hanging Rock and the nearby trout farm were also inspected, and a whole day was spent in Tamworth, where the group took lunch at the pub next to the Golden Guitar Museum.

The trip included barbecues inspired by a bonfire area and a wine tasting on the last night which was a great farewell to an enjoyable break of fun and friendship.

Wilson returns to the Area SAM Wilson has returned to the area in a very different role than she formerly had.

Residents will probably remember her as an employee at both the Tanilba Golf Club and the Tilligerry RSL. After completing her training at the Police Academy in Goulburn, Constable Wilson spent some four years as a General Duties Officer at Castle Hill in Sydney.

She now replaces

Senior Constable Luke Rogers who has taken up an appointment in Newcastle.

Constable Wilson has intimate knowledge of the area and its residents having attended Tanilba Bay Public School and Raymond Terrace High.

“I’ll be looking forward to the challenge,” she said.”

“It’s also great to be back close to family and friends,” Constable Wilson told News Of The Area.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. On November 11 1918, at 11am, the guns fell silent on the Western Front (Belgium and France) and more than four years of bloody warfare was ended.

By Rachael VAUGHAN HATS off to the Hospital, was the theme for the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary Barefoot Bowls Fundraiser last week.

Nelson Bay Bowling Club graciously hosted this funfilled event, with donated gifts for both winning and losing teams, and a sausage sizzle for all excited bowlers at the end of the tournament.

Creativity saw no limits with the costumes on the day, with the usually sedate bowling greens instead dotted with colour and imagination.

The ‘winning hat’ worn

by Debbie Longs featured a medical theme, which included a stethoscope.

Laughter exploded throughout the greens as first time bowlers sent bowls flying in all directions, and blood pressures of seasoned bowlers rose when bowls were called balls.

Many local bowlers looked on in amazement as shouts echoed, and hats flew.

Barefoot Bowls Seals Swim Club SWIM Relaunch Hospital Auxiliary has held the event, and the support from members, locals and visitors ensured this year was another outstanding success.

President of the Auxiliary, Pauline Faucett, praised the businesses and individuals for their donations for the raffle prizes. She told News Of The Area, “An amazing wine gift pack, Woolworths gift card and bottles of Chandon were gratefully received by winners.”

“Local nurse Debbie was a winner and grinner when she won the winepack, and Debbie’s fellow team of nurses were on hand to accept the wine.”

“Team ‘Edmonds’, led by member Babs Edmonds, were over all bowl team winners.”

“A special thank you goes to members Narelle and Julia and NBBC event coordinator Nichole, as well as her staff, for an excellent job done,” The Auxiliary is proud of the thirty years of fundraising they have facilitated, and the recent donation of $25,000 for equipment on the hospital’s

wishlist.

Pauline remarked, “This is what the Auxiliary is all about.”

The Auxiliary has now tagged items paid for by the group, showcasing the amazing generosity of the community, and providing a visual reminder of what events like these can equate to for a community hospital. .

The next fundraising event in the Auxiliary calendar is the Novembers’ Christmas Raffles.

Ticket sales kick off in Nelson Bay Woolworths during the 14-16 November, and again during 28-30 November.

In between the Nelson Bay dates, the group will be in front of Woolworths Salamander Bay during 21-23 November.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Tomaree Hospital at 2 Treally St, Nelson Bay. New members are always welcome.

STROUD Seals is a small Swimming Club based in Stroud, but year round squad training takes place at Lakeside Leisure Centre, Raymond Terrace.

While small, the Club has established itself as competitive Club which caters for swimmers who are competing at State level but also embraces those swimmers who are younger and still developing their skills.

The Club is very fortunate to have Head Coach Michael Abel running and developing their swimming pathways and technical program.

Seals Head Coach, Michael Abel is a licensed coach registered with ASCTA; he holds a Masters Degree in Coaching from Griffith University.

Michael has over 30 years experience coaching swimmers from junior level through to competing on the National and world stage.

He applies this extensive knowledge to developing technically comprehensive and detailed squad training programs, for groups and individuals.

Michael has been involved with swimming at the coaching and parent level and fully understands the pressures of work, school, and family.

His long term holistic approach enables him to manage training effectively to get the most out of the athletes so they can achieve their full potential as they develop their skills.

He is always available to discuss his approach to coaching and his training programs with swimmers and parents.

In order to expand and develop the range of coaching services within the club, Michael is developing junior coaches James Newall (21) and Tim Tatchell (19) who are both state/national level competitive swimmers.

He is working hard developing a small business enterprise, training hard at his swimming to attain State Open times and undertaking a coaching qualification with Lakeside Leisure Centre.

James Newall, is studying physiotherapy at Newcastle University, but is also a passionate and committed swimming coach.

Having been a highly competitive swimmer himself, James thoroughly enjoys developing new swimmers and passing on his knowledge and experience.

James is a Bronze level coach and works as a coach at Newcastle Forum at Newcastle University and has also coached at Lakeside Leisure Centre.

In these Centres he has trained both high performance squads and development level squads.

James, as part of his coaching development, is establishing a Junior Dolphins Program at Stroud Community Pool.

The Junior Dolphins Program aims to bridge the gap between learn-to-swim and squad training.

James hopes to attract young swimmers on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons to Stroud.

CHOOSING one live gig venue each week is always tough, but this week Kelly Hope has made it easy with two gigs booked this weekend at two live-music-supporting venues in Port Stephens.

Debut CD “First Cut” LOCAL band ‘The Grasscutters’ are officially launching their debut CD “First Cut” on 1 December.

Recorded by renowned musician Robbie Long at Funky Lizard Studio in Newcastle, the CD features 8 songs, including 4 original numbers.

“We were lucky enough to play at the Karuah Bluegrass Festival this year, and won their “Political Agitation” songwriting contest,” said Leanne Barrett, who plays accordion & percussion in the band.

“The prize included recording time at Funky Lizard Studio, which gave us the incentive to record a CD,”said Ms Barrett.

The band comprises of Leanne Barrett, Scott Hoy (guitar, banjo) and Steve Yarnold (bass) of Gloucester, Kathy Aquilina (vocal, guitar, ukulele) and Lloyd Aquilina (mandolin) of Markwell, with John Melville of Bootawah

adding his harmonica and vocals to the recording. The mix of instruments provide a great sound to the folk/ country songs.

This was the first time in a recording studio for most of the band.

Talented Tiger has Eye on next Season

BLAKE Layton has just scooped the pool in his first year of big time Rugby League in Sydney.

Backing up after a successful season with the Balmain Tigers in the SG Ball competition he packed down as Hooker for the Ryde Eastwood Hawks.

It was here that he really impressed selectors being voted both ‘Players’ Player’ and ‘Player of the Year’ in the under 18s . On top of this he took out the coveted ‘Club Player of the Year’ Award.

Blake first laced up his

boots at the tender young age of five playing for the Mallabula Panthers.

He then switched to the Raymond Terrace Roosters at the age of ten. He trialled for Hunter Sports High, was accepted and at age 15 was in the school’s team which won the State Premiership Knockout Competition.

He was then placed in the Newcastle Knights development squad which took out the prestigious ‘Harold Matthews State Knockout’ trophy.

ELEVEN year old Shari Hurdman from the Bay is heading to the Nationals after taking out the gold medal in the girls 11 years 200 metre sprint at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA ) State Championships.

The Port Stephens runner competed against the best in NSW at Sydney Olympic Park and took out

NIGHT-time fishing in shallow water paid dividends for family friends David Kirk and Regan Lilley.

The dynamic duo nailed their bag limit of quality jewfish up to 20kg on successive outings recently. They were also busted up by bigger fish.

That’s not all! In amongst the larger fish they caught a good haul of Bream, Gummy shark and Flathead. They also hooked more than their fair share of stingrays which became something of a pest to the seasoned anglers.

They were generous

not only the gold for the 200 metre sprint, but also a silver in the 100 metre sprint.

Hurdman won gold in the 200 metre sprint in her age class in 2017 and now holds back to back titles.

While Hurdman was well positioned to take out the 200 metres the surprising result was the 100m silver since she doesn’t train for this event specifically.

Locals can do worse than to fish in the Passage at Lemon Tree itself as large Jewfish sometimes lurk in and around the Marina.

They have been known to gill up in crab traps in the Passage and a deep hole on the right hand side just outside the entrance channel is worth a try for those wishing to wet a line in the slack water at night.

Determination and strength saw her dig in deep with her powerful legs.

With a time of 27.43 seconds in the 200 metre sprint Shari Hurdman will now go on to represent NSW in the Nationals which are being held 23-24 November in Melbourne.

In the 100 metre sprint Hurdman clocked in with a more than respectable 13.33 seconds taking out the silver medal.

Anja Hurdman, Shari’s mother, told News Of The Area, “The weather was hot and sunny, perfect

conditions for Shari.

“Her proud coach Bob Walkley was there to keep her focussed and properly prepared for each race.

“We are all very excited and immensely proud of her achievements!” she said.

Shari is heading to Tomaree High School next year, where she has been selected for the Talented Sport Program class at the school.

She also participates in Nippers at Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club and is a keen gymnast.

With the Open Women’s Pro-AM and Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup already contested over the weekend.

The Open Women’s Pro-AM and Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup events gave amateur women and promising junior stars the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in women’s surfing.
