Community want a greater Police presence By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Message from Police representatives at the Medowie Community forum was loud and clear – they need to know what is happening here if we want to see change. The forum was well attended by community members, Police representatives, councillor Geoff Dingle, and our local MP Kate Washington. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “It’s not often that a community gets to vent its frustrations with the Commander and his management team from our local police command.” “It happened last week in Medowie and I’m very grateful that our police are willing to sit with our
community and listen,” she said. A number of community members spoke at the forum, and the resounding message was loud and clear. “We want, and need a greater police presence.” Port Stephens LAC Commander Chris Craner spoke to attendees and took our comments and requests on board. His response was equally loud and clear. “Too many times, local police have spoken to residents who have a recurring problem and state nothing gets done about it.” Commander Craner said too often when they ask ‘How many times have you called CONTINUED Page 2

High School a chance By Rachael VAUGHAN
OUR Local MP, Kate Washington, has always strongly advocated for a Medowie High School to be built.

The fight for Medowie High School has been going on since the 1980’s and continues to frustrate locals. Last week in parliament, budget estimates were discussed, and Ministers were
required to answer questions. Kate Washington contacted News Of The Area to discuss an interesting statement made by the The NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli.

the station’, the response is ‘well, I haven’t’. Residents need to report - we need to report everything that happens in Medowie, and help to create a database of true statistics. You have several options to make these reports, and unless your situation is an emergency, it doesn’t matter which way you report it. You can call the local station on (02) 49837599, the Police Assistance Line (PAL) on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Write down all details of the report, the name and rank of the person who took call, and follow up if you desire. Commander Craner also told attendees that an online reporting system for incidents not requiring police attendance (non emergency) is on the horizon. “I hope that people will
receive this message, and it will help them to really see what is happening, and where services are most needed,” said Commander Craner. Commander Crane mentioned that whilst most reports from the community meeting were about dangerous drivers, that the statistical concerns in Medowie appear to in actual fact be car and home theft. If this is not the case, we need to report all incidences so that statistics reflect where the true problems lie. Residents in attendance reflected that a lot of locals feel like they have lost faith in the Police. C o m m a n d e r Craner said, “This is a disappointing fact, and with more information and reporting, he hopes to be able to change that feeling in Medowie.” It was also reported that residents feel they are not given up to date crime information and things to look out for that

plan for new schools. Does Medowie figure in that plan?” Education Minister Adrian Piccoli: “Well look I don’t want to give all our secrets away. As I said there are 22 projects which have not been announced yet plus most of the billion dollars set aside for schools under the polls and wire transaction and they will be announced in due season” It is a small glimmer of hope, and perhaps not one to feel positive about just yet, but we remain hopeful that Medowie will be granted the choice of education for all – instead of just options that suit some.

Get Ready weekend By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE Rural Fire Brigade are calling all residents to join them for the ‘Get Ready weekend’ this Saturday at the station in preparation for the coming bush fire season. The weekend will see volunteer firefighters holding events and activities at the Medowie fire station, giving residents a chance to talk about what they can do to Get Ready for bushfires. NSW RFS members have been busy preparing for this season by undertaking hazard reduction burns, maintaining firefighting equipment and
undergoing training. Get Ready weekend is a chance for Port Stephens Residents to also do their bit and begin planning. Ken Johnson from Medowie Rural fire brigade told News Of The Area, “We have many events and activities planned for Medowie this Saturday, and we encourage all residents to come down and have a chat about some relatively simple and easy things you can put in place to be ready for bushfire season.” Activities for Medowie residents include: For the kids; Meet Mighty
Mike the mini fire truck simulation machine, use a fire hose to knock down targets, have your photo taken in uniform and have a look inside the trucks. For everyone; Inspect the station and trucks, see a kitchen fire simulation, have a free sausage sandwich, discuss the bush fire risk of your house and ask volunteers any fire related questions. In the week following Open Day, volunteers will also be spending some time at the Medowie supermarkets providing advice on steps to take to get ready for the fire season. Please take the opportunity to come to the open day, or approach volunteers at the shopping centre. The open day will be open from 10am until 2pm.
Teal Day raises funds for Ovarian Cancer By Rachael VAUGHAN IRRAWANG High School teacher, Jean Duma, is on a mission to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer – and the school has happily supported her on her fundraising journey. In October 2016, Ms Duma will be doing the Great Wall of China Challenge to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Australia. Her initial goal was to raise at least $4000. Last week, Irrawang High School hosted ‘Crazy Teal Day’ to help with raising much needed funds, and helped Ms Duma to hit that $4000 goal. Jean Duma told News Of The Area, “It was such a fantastic day, and I’m so grateful to the staff and students for all getting on board with raising funds.” “The total funds raised for Irrawang’s Crazy Teal Day was $2052.96, and in total
since I started fundraising in February, my total funds raised has reached $4299.76,” Ms Duma said. Challenge One for Crazy Teal Day promised that if the school raised $1500 Miss Henry would wear a dress, sing a song and have her head shaved. Meeting challenge number two ensure that if $2,000 was met, Principal Mr Baxter would shave his beard and Ms Duma would dye her hair blue. With both those targets met, the fun began. The assembly kicked off with an amazing Dolly Parton performance by a pink prom dress clad Ms Henry, complete with a flash mob of CAPA students. Ms Henry then had her head shaved by students Dylan and Louise Edwards. Mr Baxter’s beard was shaved and Ms Duma’s hair was dyed courtesy of Claire

Legacy Week brings out the best in our students OUR two feeder high schools, Irrawang High and Hunter River High, can be very proud this week of their student representatives. Students from both schools volunteered last week for Legacy Week, and sold pins, badges, bears, bracelets and more at Raymond Terrace Marketplace, and at their schools, to benefit this worthy charity. Jan Noake, community member, told News Of The Area, “It was so lovely to see such friendly and wellpresented young people collecting for such an important cause.” “They represented their schools very well, and they should be proud of them,” said Ms Noake. Medowies Annual Art and Craft Show Returns
Longriders raising for charity By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Annual Longriders Motorcycle Club bike show is this year in its 14th year, and will be celebrated for 2016 on Saturday 10 September. The event is starting at 11am at Tomago Bowling Club. The Longriders have been in the Heatherbrae/ Newcastle area since 1998, and have a proud tradition of raising funds for charities – choosing new local groups to support each year. This year’s charities that will benefit from the motorcycle club’s generosity and big hearts are ‘Charlie’s Run 4 Kids’ and ‘Soldier on’. Charlie’s Run 4 Kids is a local running group that raises money for local families. Their number one supporter, Charlie Carr, lost her battle with Neuroblastoma in April last year. They continue to run for Charlie, and this year
are also running for fifteenyear-old Jacob Cooper – who is currently undergoing treatment for A.L.L PH+ Leukemia. Soldier On supports servicemen and women of the Australian Defence Force who have been physically or psychologically wounded in the service of their country. Their vision is to have the world’s best care for Australia’s wounded soldiers, to help them to achieve the same hopes and dreams they had prior to their wounds. The bike show is set to yet again be a huge event that has something for everyone. Entry to the event is $5 and all proceeds go to charity. Lucky door and raffle prizes to be won include 5 nights’ accommodation on the snow fields. Activities planned for this big day out include; market stalls, kids rides, laughing clowns, slides, wood chopping demonstration, Taekwondo demonstrations, face painting, ice cream vans,
coffee vans, air brush artists, pony rides, camel rides, food

Ice Report Welcomed by MPs THE 2014 hearings of Operation Spicer heard of envelopes of cash being donated by banned property developers including Hilton Grugeon, Bill Saddington and then Lord Mayor of Newcastle Jeff McCloy. In total, eleven NSW Liberal MPs, including then Premier Barry O’Farrell, were subject to scrutiny as part of Operation Spicer. Upper House member and former Police Minister Mike Gallacher is the only MP scrutinised by Operation Spicer who is still
in Parliament. Former Charlestown MP Andrew Cornwell is the only Hunter MP referred to the DPP for further investigation. Other MPs have been referred to the NSW electoral commission further investigation. This report has particular importance in Port Stephens, where Hilton Grugeon and Darren Williams continue to be involved in the planning system and former MP Craig Baumann continues to hold influence in Liberal Party
branches, as does former Port Stephens Councillor Josh Hodges. The findings of Operation Spicer have highlighted the need for further protections to the integrity of the electoral system, including restoring the funding cut to ICAC by the Baird Government and banning property developers from standing for Local Government. The Baird Government has slashed the ICAC’s funding by 7.5 per cent in 2015-16 and a further 9 per cent in 2016-
