AN emotion charged forum to gather ideas to bring about change for the Pet Kennel industry took place this week. Held at the Hunter’s only fully accredited boarding kennel, Hunter Pet Motel, the event was hosted by the PIAA (Pet Industry Association of Australia). PIAA CEO Mark Fraser hosted the forum, along with the owner of the Hunter Pet Motel, Brett Wild. Mark Fraser spoke about the need for change and documented all concerns and ideas raised by attendees of the forum, thanking them for their valuable insight. Jayne Cvetanoski, Head of Boarding Kennel and Cattery

Reform Australia group spoke about the seven dog deaths in kennels in the past month, and that reform desperately needs to happen. These deaths include five in New South Wales, one in Queensland and one in Western Australia. She challenged the PIAA and RSPCA to take on board all the suggestions. “The suggestions are wonderful, but we need action and we need to make these ideas happen,” she said. “We trust PIAA and RSPCA, and we trust in them staying accountable and being the leaders for change.” “We don’t want to see any more animals in kennels suffer CONTINUED Page 3

when owners trust these people with the lives of their precious pets.” Attendees at the forum were not only given the chance to listen to industry professionals, but also three owners of Pets who lost their lives. Nathan Wilson, owner of Baron the Greyhound who passed away at Jane’s Pet Resort, spoke to the crowd of passionate animal rights enthusiasts. Coralie Davis, the owner of Annie who died at Pelgate Kennels in Cooranbong, spoke of her continuing daily distress following the death of her dog who was mauled to death by another dog in the Kennel’s care. Jenny Thompson also spoke to the crowd about the death of her dog who died as a direct result of starvation. MP Kate Washington spoke about her own animals, and her distress at what owners have gone through.

RSPCA CEO Steve Coleman also spoke to the group regarding the involvement they would like to have with assisting to bring about change and regulation for the industry. Kennel owners from as far as Victoria and Queensland were in attendance, and spoke about the changes they have put in place in their own kennels to properly care for animals at a high standard. Brett Wild, Owner of Hunter Pet Motel, told News Of The Area, “Boarding kennel operators should not be afraid of change.” “Regulation and training can be value adding and only improves your ability to look after these special charges.” “Our animals love us and trust us unconditionally to make the best decisions for their welfare, based on care and not dollar value,” he said. News Of The Area will continue to keep our readers informed of any future developments.

Share your healthcare stories DO you have a story, good or bad, about our healthcare system? Meryl Swanson is urging local people to share their Medicare stories on the 33rd birthday of the heart and soul of our universal healthcare system. Labor Leader Bill Shorten and Shadow Health Minister Catherine King have launched an online portal mymedicarestory.com inviting people to share their experiences, good and bad. Mr Shorten said: “While we can’t respond or intervene in every case, your

story is vital so we have a thorough picture of what is happening to healthcare in Australia.” Ms Swanson said she had received complaints to her office about the difficulty people were having in getting through on the Medicare phone line, the length of time refunds were taking to be processed, the more out of pocket expenses people faced, and the insistence of Medicare staff on people using the Medicare app. “The Government has made it so hard for

Sweetheart Day for HeartKids SWEETHEART Day is held annually on 14 February to raise funds towards fighting childhood heart disease (CHD). All proceeds go towards HeartKids, a national organisation that focuses on funding vital medical research as well as improving the lives of Aussie kids with CHD. Eight babies are born every day with a heart defect in Australia, and every week four lives are lost. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of kids under one. Two Medowie families are getting behind the cause this year again, because they have two very special HeartKids of their own. Lucas Pickett was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (essentially half a heart). He required life saving open heart surgery at just two days old, and again at six months old with further surgeries required in the future. The Pickett family lived at the hospital for over two months following his birth. Kaylee Stokes was born with an Atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) which was diagnosed at six weeks

people they are sometimes in despair trying to deal with Medicare, just as they are with Centrelink,” Ms Swanson said. “Sometimes we are able to help, but clearly there are not enough staff in these Medicare offices to do the work required. The Government’s cuts are taking their toll and we have to do all we can to protect Medicare.” Under the Turnbull Government, Australians are paying more out of their own pockets for Medicare

While the possibility of surgery always lingers, Kaylee has been fighting this condition on her own and the Stokes Family have been blessed that she has not yet required it. She requires ongoing checkups to monitor both the progress of her condition and also her development. Kaylee’s parents, Leon and Jacqui, told News Of The Area, “We were completely oblivious to the high number of children born with Childhood Heart Disease.” “We didn’t realise the number of families it affected and the number of child lives lost as a result.” “Since finding out about our little girl we’ve always wanted to do more for Heartkids,” they said.

services than ever before “The Turnbull Government must drop the savage cuts to Medicare which has already caused bulk billing rates to fall, and people to pay more for vital healthcare services,” Ms Swanson said. “I urge you to share your experiences so the Government can hear how bad it is.” While the portal does require name and contact details, you can tick a box to keep your submission confidential.

New management for old favourite By Rachael VAUGHAN

IF you’re an observant local, or a regular customer of Medowie Pet & Produce, you might have noticed the store is closed this week. After six years, Bronwyn Flinn, has sold the store to new owners, Medowie locals Kerrie Anderson and Tom Matthews. The store is being revamped this week and will

reopen next week with a new and wider range of stock, and a brand new branding and identity. From next week, the store will be known as The Pet Shed Medowie. Kerrie and Tom are very enthusiastic to continue in this business which has served Medowie and surrounding areas for many years. They are excited to share the changes with our community, and welcome any feedback.

Kerrie told News Of The Area,“We’re really looking forward to the re-opening, and sharing our expansion and all our ideas with the community.” “There’ll be more aquatic and reptile products, as well as much much more that will be revealed.” Kerrie is a local accountant and will continue with her business and Tom will continue his career as a mechanic. The store will be managed by Maree Smith who has already been an employee for the past three and a half years. The store has a proposed reopening date of 13 February. The former owner, Bronwyn, is looking forward to retiring and spending more time with her family and grandson. We wish Bronwyn well in her well-deserved retirement. Welcome Kerrie and Tom and the new, revamped The Pet Shed Medowie.

HOW well do you know your bushfire alert levels? Bushfires can flare up at any time of the year, but are more prone in the warmer months of the year from October to April. Alert levels play an important part of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s education and awareness campaign. It advertises and promotes these levels on its website, on the radio and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app and residents need to keep track of the alert levels so that they know what to do in the event of a fire. The alert levels are: ADVICE: A fire has started.
 There is no

immediate danger. Stay up to date in case
the situation changes. WATCH AND ACT: There is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action to protect you and your family. EMERGENCY WARNING: An Emergency Warning is the highest level of bushfire alert. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Any delay now puts your life at risk. Before a fire even starts, monitor the Fire Danger Ratings daily at www.rfs.nsw. gov.au/fdr. There are six fire danger ratings ranging from LowModerate to Catastrophic

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au

“The higher the fire danger rating, the more dangerous a fire is likely to be. Under catastrophic conditions leaving early is the only safe option,” a spokesman for the RFS said. “When it’s Severe you should only stay if your home is well prepared and you’re ready to defend it.
“At Extreme, only stay if your home is prepared to the very highest level and is specially built to survive a bushfire.
“Catastrophic is as bad as it gets – no homes are built to withstand a fire in these conditions. Leaving early is your only safe option.”

Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis.Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

I have been single for some time, in fact, my family has probably lost all hope for me. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my independent, please-myself lifestyle, I have opened my heart to the possibility of love and have been seeing a man for a couple of months and feel I should introduce him to my family but am very nervous about the daunting task of unleashing my family upon a very shy man. Miss EB, Corlette Dear Miss EB, What are we working with here? A Brady sort of bunch or a Focker sort of family? I’m sensing, between the lines, that it is probably the latter. It is natural to feel nervous, EB. You’ve swiped right, put your best foot forward, felt the first flicker of love and all that hard work could come undone. Ease your new man into the fold one family member at a time. Start with the most impressive ones and work your way down the list. When you say “unleash”, I gather that there may be a Hannibal Lecter-type in the old gene pool. Leave Uncle Mac until the end-of-year dress-up party when gimp masks are somehow more socially acceptable. Or just tell your new man you are an orphan. He sounds like a keeper. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Gonski Cuts

Gonski funding is designed to ensure all children are educated in properly resourced school, then what effects could this have? This is the question?

Mergers a “Dog’s Breakfast”

SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington and Shadow Minister for Local Government, Peter Primrose, have called on incoming Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack to heed residents’ calls for Hunter Councils to stand alone. Council mergers were first announced over 12 months ago however a final decision has stalled, leaving Councils unable to replace outgoing staff or By Geoff WALKER

PROBLEMS with oyster spat production in Tasmania and South Australia could very well be a bonus for Port Stephens growers. Local farmer Richard Hamlyn-Harris said that a national shortage was looming and this could see the price rise “substantially”. “After the problems of the past few years, we need a welcome boost to our morale,” he said. “Currently, the wholesale price is around $10 per dozen and in my case the demand was so strong that I ‘ran out’ over Christmas.” “Pacific oysters are in recovery mode and we are hoping for a good crop moving into winter. Warm sea surface currents are suspected of causing a high degree of mortality in previous years as they prefer colder waters,” he said.

MEMBER for Paterson Meryl Swanson has written to all schools in her electorate this week asking principals and teachers what the effects of “Gonski” cuts will meant to them. The Paterson electorate will lose $43million in Gonski funding as part of the Turnbull Government’s $30billion cut from schools over 10 years. Labor is fighting these cuts and insisting the Government deliver the full Gonski rollout. “I have no doubt the

make significant planning decisions for their regions. Kate Washington has urged Ms Cusack to meet with the residents and businesses who will be severely impacted by a forced merger. “As the government’s Hunter representative it is vital that Ms Cusack doesn’t just meet with Councils, but also with the residents and businesses who will be negatively impacted by forced mergers,” Kate

“February will be the month to watch and if they [the Pacifics] make it through the hot weather it should be plain sailing.” “Port Stephens is free of the POMS virus although it devastated oysters in the Hawkesbury and Georges River estuarine systems in Sydney. Fisheries are hard at it breeding an oyster which is POMS resistant,” Mr Hamlyn-Harris added. “There is also an untapped niche market for oysters with a story attached. In the swanky high priced capital city restaurants, owners like to be able to trace the history of their oysters right back to the very farm and estuary in which they were grown. Their diners are interested in this type of information. Some of us are exploring this option for marketing.” “The creative advertising agencies will be suggesting special names for our produce

impact of these cuts will be severe, but I want to hear directly from schools what the cuts will mean for them,” Ms Swanson said. “I know several schools have used their Gonski funding for intervention programs that have led to great improvements in literacy and numeracy. “One school told me they are meeting and exceeding local and state standards because of these programs. “Properly funding our schools is critical to making sure our young people have

Washington MP said. Deputy Premier Barilaro says there will be no more forced mergers in the bush because they’re bad for local communities. Ms Cusack says she wants them in our region because they’re good for local communities even though we don’t want them. “As the government’s Hunter representative it is vital that Ms Cusack doesn’t just meet with Councils, but also with the residents

and businesses who will be negatively impacted by forced mergers.” “Regardless of whether it’s Baird or Berejiklian, the Government’s council mergers are a complete dog’s breakfast,” Peter Primrose MLC said. NSW Labor has opposed forced council mergers and proposed a mechanism for residents of merged councils to de-merge under a future Labor Government. NSW Labor continues to support voluntary mergers where residents are given a say through a plebiscite.

I will not stand by while funds are cut from schools. By Geoff WALKER

WANT to grow your own native plants to attract the birds and beautify your garden? It’s easy and a good species to start with is the banksia. They were named after Sir Joseph Banks. It was he who named the first place Captain Cook landed in Australia as Botany Bay. The reason? It was full of hitherto unknown species of flora. MV Banks, formerly HMAS Banks, which was moored at the Lemon Tree Passage Marina was also named in his honour. We are lucky in Tilligerry to have quite a few types and they are dead set easy to propagate. It’s best to select the type which suits your land. The serrata is our tallest and lives outside the floodplain whereas the wallum banksia likes low lying topography such as Tanilba Golf Course. The large leafed robur prefers the edges of water courses and marginata are prolific near the rim of the

foreshore. Collina and oblongifolia can be found in the rocky hills. Just go into the scrub and snap off a few old cones (which haven’t been visited by bushfire for a few years) and put them in an oven. An hour at 120 degrees should do the trick. Leave them for a few days to fully

open then use tweezers to pluck out the winged seed which hides behind a woody ‘tongue.’ Directly plant them or pot them up. A ‘butterfly’ seedling will emerge a week or so later. Want to know more? Get on down to the ‘Habitat’ where the grow them in their nursery for sale to ‘Sibelco,’ the silica sand miners at Oyster Cove.

Driveway nuisance

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE school year has begun and while many parents are rejoicing in this fact, some residents of Medowie have an old issue that follows the school terms flaring up again. Residents who live in close proximity to our schools, yet again are having to combat the issue of parents dropping their children off at school and parking across driveways,

blocking their access to enter or exit their homes. The school day drop off and pick up is a busy time and the streets around our schools resemble a busy city street instead of the normal quiet life that we enjoy. A close car park is a premium during these times, and rightly so for the safety of collecting precious cargo, but we all need to be respectful of the people who live in these areas.

TYCA are a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation running Youth programs in Port Stephens, with the goal of empowering youth to fulfil their potential. 18 February will see the next Snack’N’Rap take place on the Tilligerry peninsula at 11am at Mallabula Skate Park. The Snack’N’Rap event is a gold coin donation, which gives you a sausage sandwich and a can of drink, as well as the day’s entertainment and fun. TYCA partner with UP&UP and Newcastle Scratch Academy to put on these community events, and TYCA president Jamie Brewster says they couldn’t do without them as event partners. UP&UP engages in

Tender for Cup Tour

THE Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will this year celebrate a 15-year milestone, with the Melbourne Cup trophy set to visit more than 30 destinations in its annual trek across Australia and New Zealand. To ensure the Port Stephens community have an opportunity to secure a visit from the 18-carat gold Cup in this milestone year, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will open the tender process early for the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with submissions now being accepted. Since 2003, the Melbourne Cup has travelled more than 456,000 kilometers to rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand. “The VRC created the concept of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with the aim to provide communities without easy geographical access to the Melbourne Cup an opportunity to experience the magic of the trophy firsthand,” VRC Chief Executive Simon Love said. “We never dreamed that the Tour would evolve into such a significant community event, which 15 years later, continues to grow in

popularity. “We are humbled by the pleasure the Cup provides to people of all ages, and want to ensure that as many communities as possible share the same unique opportunity again this year,” Mr Love said. In 2016, the $175,000 gold trophy toured 34 destinations, providing schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs with a unique opportunity to host a day of community events and raise valuable funds for local causes. Past racing legends also accompany the Cup each year on its epic journey to recount some of the remarkable

YOUNG Indigenous leaders are being given the opportunity to participate in the third National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP), which will take place in Canberra from May 23-29. “This is a really great opportunity to learn how government works, how laws are made, and to get some experience with public speaking and dealing with the media,” Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said. “Importantly, it also gives elected representatives like me the

chance to hear from young Indigenous people about the issues that affect them, and how, as lawmakers, we might help.” Conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy, NIYP is a weeklong leadership program for 50 young Indigenous Australian leaders aged 16-25. It is held in Old Parliament House, Canberra, and includes a two-day simulated parliament, where participants debate issues of importance to their

By Rachael VAUGHAN WHEN you’re a mother, and looking for something new to do with your time outside the home, Roller Derby is the first activity to spring to mind, right? Well, local mother Shelley Alexandria thought “why not!”. Shelley felt a strong desire to add something to her life, to give her a break outside the home and from parenthood constraints and wanted to build her fitness. She saw an advertisement for Roller Derby, mustered her courage, put on her skates and hasn’t looked back. Shelley told News Of The Area, “I had been to watch a few games before and it looked like a whole lot of fun.” “I joined back in 2014 and quickly became addicted.” “My teammates became my friends and my family,” she said. Shelley plays for Maitland Roller Derby, which is a co-ed league, and has also played on the home teams for Newcastle. Sometimes there is travel involved for teams to play, with teams Shelley has played with travelling to Armidale, Port Macquarie, Central Coast and Newcastle.

State Titles for Tanilba By Geoff WALKER

TANILBA Sailing Club will be the focus of attention on the weekend of 18 and 19 February to decide the 2017 NSW State titles in two classes of catamarans. Some 35 entries have been received from as far afield as Sydney, Canberra, Ballina, Port Macquarie and Batemans Bay. The ‘big boat’ regatta will see both the 4.9metre and 5.5metre classes vie for the coveted titles. Tanilba boasts as many as eight former and current national catamaran champions. These hardened veterans are nurturing the club’s junior sailors who are moving up the ranks and on to the larger craft. Club stalwart Sam Breaden has much praise for the next generation of sailors: “We received a government grant to purchase open ‘Bic’ trainers several years ago and our first crop of three boys has mastered the art and are off to a Booti Booti

Golf Digest and Golf Australia have each released annual rankings for Australia’s top 100 golf courses and Pacific Dunes has been ranked number 26 and 54 by the respective publications. THE ‘new kids’ in town have started their time in Medowie well by embracing the community spirit straight away. Our newest real estate, LJ Hooker, have taken over a shop front in the BP service centre complex and are already happily getting involved in the community. LJ Hooker have come on board as one of the major sponsors for Medowie Rugby Club, making a generous agreement in a three year contract. Medowie Rugby Club spokesperson Lisa Cook told News Of The Area, “We are so grateful to businesses who love to look after our local clubs.” “LJ Hooker were more than happy to come on board, and we can’t wait to share a successful season with them and the Medowie Rugby Club family.” “We have big plans for this season, and there is no doubt there’s a lot of fun and great events to share with the community, our players,

Community sporting clubs are often reliant on the generosity of sponsors, so it is wonderful to see so many Medowie businesses on board this year with sponsorship of various local clubs. OUR town is filled to the brim with compassionate, kind, community-minded people. News Of The Area spoke to Tony Gillespie, one of our recent Australia Day award winners. Tony is our Australia Day Port Stephens Sportsperson of the Year. Tony owns a Medowie Gym, Martial arts and Fitness centre called Imugi Fit, which

also offers classes to disabled young people. Tony began his martial arts journey at age seven, in 1986. He connected immediately to the discipline, and enjoyed being trained by some of the very best martial artists in the country. It was not until he started teaching that he truly felt at one with his training and what he could give back to others. Tony told News Of The

Area, “Giving back to others and seeing them succeed is what I love the most.” “Passing on as much of my knowledge as possible is extremely satisfying.” Tony has worked hard with his partner Kelly O’Brien to build a strong foundation for their business. Tony felt honoured and humbled when the news was announced that he had won the Sportsperson Of The Year Award. Tony told News Of The Area, “At first it didn’t seem real and I wasn’t emotionally connected to the moment.” “I felt everyone who has helped me, nominated me, CONTINUED Page 7
