q Carmel Northwood receives her award with her team.

Port Stephens Woman Of The Year By Sarah STOKES

ANNA Bay’s Carmel Northwood has been named

as Port Stephens Woman of the Year. Kate Washington, MP, presented Carmel with the

NSW Government award at a ceremony on Friday. Carmel is the President of Port Stephens Koalas and

dedicates endless hours to caring and saving koalas from extinction. Since joining the

organisation in 2010, Carmel has worked with Port Stephens Council to regenerate koala food corridors as well as representing Port Stephens Koalas at the NSW Wildlife

delay and then the voice saying your name and telling you that they are from the taxation department and they

owe you money. Of course they need your banking details to pay the money in.

Then there are those who say you’ve won a big prize and if you pay a few hundred bucks they will send it to you.

Very few people are fooled by these types of scams these days but a trusting Margaret Sheppard from Tanilba Bay

Council. Carmel is also involved in a lot of the administration, working as a koala educator

almost fell victim to an online email scammer.

as well as helping to progress the plans for a local koala hospital. This week Carmel will attend the NSW Local Woman of the Year Award with Kate Washington for the next round. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Carmel shows so much dedication to the job of saving Port Stephens’ koalas.” Kate also spoke of how Carmel and the team’s work is amazing in the effort, care and kindness they show. The public’s awareness and concern of the koala’s plight has grown immensely in recent years. In the past five years, koala numbers have

dropped from 1200 to 200 – an enormous fall. The work is often heartbreaking as not all the koalas make it. On the flip side, Julie, one of the carers, told of a koala that had spent 39 weeks in recovery and was then released. Les Seddon, Natural Resources Co-ordinator for the Council, who works with Carmel on the Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management, told News Of The Area: “Huge congratulations to Carmel. She is inspirational to the staff at the Council and it is a pleasure to work with her.” Councillor Geoff Dingle described how he was passionate about preserving koala habitat. He also thanked the eyes and ears of the community who report such activities as illegal chopping down of trees. Needless to say that

LYME disease is often confused with chronic fatigue syndrome, Ross River virus and other medical conditions which exhibit similar symptoms. These can include a fever, debilitating fatigue, muscle and joint pain and

Clean and Green By Geoff WALKER

q Robert Hamilton: Hunter prawns are of the highest quality.

“CLEAN and green.....and we want to keep it that way!” This is the attitude of Hunter River professional prawners who take great pride in the high standard of their produce. Long time Tanilba trawler man Robert Hamilton has this to say: “Our credibility as reliable suppliers of quality prawns is paramount,” said

Community Cleans Up

long time Tanilba trawler operator Robert Hamilton. “When there were pollution concerns over runoff from RAAF Williamtown, we even stopped working the river.” “The Hunter River had not been tested but we still shut down for a season to maintain the high reputation we had worked so hard to achieve over such a long time.” This season has seen a

reasonable catch with prices rising for wild caught Hunter prawns and there is a reason for this. An outbreak of the deadly ‘white spot’ disease in the Logan River and nearby prawn farms in Queensland could very well spread. It came from imported green Asian prawns. A breakdown in quarantine protocols is believed to be the reason why it arrived. With a blanket ban on green imports, Hunter prawns are in high demand

and wholesale prices are increasing. Sadly, all is not well in the prawning industry as Robert explains: “We were very concerned some ten years ago about ‘white spot’ and the possibility of native prawn stocks being infected. We made our feelings known but really weren’t listened to.” “No outbreak has yet been found in the northern NSW rivers and we hope the problem is isolated to Queensland.”

VOLUNTEERS came out in wonderful numbers to participate in this year’s Medowie Clean Up Australia Day. Despite the inclement weather, organisers remarked that numbers were their best yet. Tidy Towns member and Port Stephens Councillor Geoff Dingle told News Of The Area, “We had a wonderful turnout, which was great to see.” “Up to fifty participants collected over eighty bags of rubbish.” “We covered a lot of area in Medowie and the volunteers did a wonderful job,” he said Volunteers came from many different community groups, as well as individual volunteers, including Medowie Lions, Medowie Tidy Towns and Medowie Scout Group. Two small groups also registered teams in Medowie, which is refreshing to see. Liz Stephens registered a clean up team on Ringwood Road, and Elissa Peattie registered a group on Sunningdale Crescent. The end result of a hard day’s work was one overfilled skip and a very large area of

q Tidy Towns and Scouts Volunteers after a successful day of collecting rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day. the community covered and looking picture perfect. Areas covered by the volunteers included parks, reserves, shopping centres, main roads, drainage areas, community centre, sports

ovals and the skate park. Items ranged from bottles and cans to car parts, gym equipment, furniture, chairs, lounges, TV sets and general household rubbish. As usual the biggest ticket

litter items were fast-food containers and soft drink bottles. Geoff Dingle remarked that it would be great to see New South Wales implement the refundable deposit

legislation for the collection of bottles and cans currently in place in South Australia. It is disappointing seeing so many items like those collected by these volunteers, but heartening to see such

a wonderful, community minded group of people willing to lend a hand to keep our town tidy for everyone to enjoy. Well done volunteers.

Merger Merry-Go-Round PORT Stephens councillors have supported a Mayoral Minute which will see Council write to the NSW Government in support of a voluntary amalgamation with Dungog Shire Council. Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Bruce MacKenzie said the decision to propose a voluntary merger was the morally correct decision. “We fought to merge with Dungog last year and I stand by that proposal

today,” he said. “The advantages for both Dungog and Port Stephens are as clear as day. “A merge of our two councils will future-proof Port Stephens, by increasing us in scale and capacity. It is a popular decision with residents and brings together like-minded communities,” Mayor MacKenzie said. But Kate Washington MP has called out Mayor Bruce MacKenzie’s push for a merger with Dungog as a

desperate land grab which will cost the residents of Port Stephens. “Our community has had a win in stopping Council mergers with Newcastle, but the Mayor wants to start the merry-go-round again,” Ms Washington said. Kate Washington previously presented a petition of over 10,000 signatures to the NSW Parliament to force a debate on Port Stephens Council being able to stand alone.

Making Dandelions By Rachael VAUGHAN TWO local mothers have teamed up, using their remarkable talents to put together a very special Children’s Book.

‘Dandelions’ was dreamt, written and brought to life in words written by Katrina McKelvey. Katrina’s words were then enhanced and given colour and imagery with

beautiful illustrations by Kirrili Lonergan. Kirrili grew up in Scone, and Katrina in Newcastle. Both women now live locally and are raising young families. Katrina told News Of The Area “Writing and illustrating children’s picture books is

Houston We Have a Problem By Geoff WALKER

“HOUSTON we have a problem....” These words have passed into everyday usage as a result of an explosion on board the ill-

fated Apollo 13 moon mission of 1970. Les Fellows from Tanilba Bay remembers them well but even more so he recalls the phrase “Thank God for the Aussies!”

You see, at the time, Les was one of a group of four scientists and technicians manning the radio telescope at Parkes NSW. The stricken craft was in a communications shadow and unable to contact mission control in Houston, Texas. A frantic call was made to ‘The Dish’ as it was the only receiving station world wide which could possibly regain contact. Working under extreme pressure and with just a tiny window of opportunity, they established contact for some two hours, relaying messages to and from NASA until the Earth’s rotation put the spacecraft back in direct contact with Mission Control. “After a bit of fine tuning, we heard some garbled voice messages but the first clear words were: ‘Thank God for the Aussies!’ after we identified ourselves.” “The words came over through an old Holden car radio speaker we had rigged up.”

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Mayor MacKenzie said the two communities were a natural fit. “This will be a link between rural and coastal communities with similar outlooks, values and ways of life,” he said. “Importantly, this is a great insurance policy for the future of Port Stephens and will help ensure we will be left to stand alone for generations to come,” Mr MacKenzie said. Kate Washington hard, so don’t be fooled!” “Children are busy creatures so you have to grab their attention quickly and keep it.” The women worked hard together to create a unique and special story. “Making Dandelions has been an amazing experience,” Katrina said. “After spending three years on the story, it was a joy watching Kirrili bring it to life through her amazing illustrations, and it was such a privilege to see that part of the book making progress.” “It was pure magic!” she told News Of The Area. Dandelions is the story of a young girl who one day notices her father mowing the lawn, and in the process destroying her favourite flowers, the Dandelions. She rushes out to stop him, but it’s too late, they are all gone. There’s nothing for it, she’s just going to have to sit outside and wait for them to grow back. But fortunately Dad has another idea.

contends that “Port Stephens is a good sized Council and should be left to stand alone”. “Dungog has few ratepayers and many bridges and roads in need of repair,” she said. “Why should Port Stephens ratepayers have to bear the burden of Dungog shire’s backlog of roads and infrastructure maintenance? This is costshifting on a grand scale.” “This is a desperate bid by Mayor Mackenzie to save his fiefdom from extinction,” she said. Taking her by the hand, he leads her to the house, and there, nestled by the verandah posts, are two tiny dandelion puff balls. Father and daughter each blow as hard as they can, and the tiny dandelion parachutes spiral and spin, up, up and away, spreading their seeds to create new generations of dandelions far and wide. And together, father and daughter lay on the grass, watching as they whirl and twirl through the air. This is a book that will be cherished by families and recommended by teachers and librarians, exploring as it does the resilience of nature, the art of forgiveness and the love between a parent and child. The book was released in hardback October 2015, and will be rereleased in paperback form in Australia, and NZ and UK in May and USA in September. The book has a RRP of $14.99 and is available in any good bookstore and online bookstores.

q Les with ‘The Dish’ DVD and his treasured medallion. In the unfolding drama the vital role played by the Australians was forgotten but recognition finally came with the 30th anniversary of the event. NASA director T O Paine travelled to Parkes and presented Les, along with his mates, unique medallions which were moulded from metal taken from the Saturn

V launching pad. More fame was to come when Les was consulted for the making of ‘The Dish’, a high grossing movie starring Sam Neil. They even sent Les a complimentary DVD. Now 87 Les looks back at the events of 1970 as one of the most exciting times of his life.

New shop for Salt Ash By Simone JOHNSON

FOREVER Gardens has increased its sites, now opening a new store on Nelson Bay road, Salt Ash. The local business with stores in Taylors Beach, Nelson Bay, Gosford and a mobile van, opened the new store due to local and tourist demand as well as a need for a new site for their tree and plant stock. The shop opened on February 10, three weeks ago, in the site that was previously a cafe. The business is also opening another new store in Pennant Hills Road, Sydney next week due to many tourists within the area claiming they have nothing like it elsewhere.

Karen Hollins, sales manager for Forever Gardens told News Of The Area, “The fake plants are great because they save water, time, chemical impact, are non allergenic and clean so they cater for all types of people.” “This is why a lot of hospitals and people in retirement homes want the plants, as they can fit into small spaces and require no maintenance at all,” added store assistant Vicki Plowman. Fake outdoor gardens are now also achievable with a lot of UV rated plants in store that can be left outside for extended periods of time. Specific sprays and fragrances can also be used to make the fake plants smell real or like any plant you

Fullerton House Awarded Coveted Prize By Heather SHARP

FROM the outside, a passerby can gaze at the stunning house owned by Mr Geoffrey Hamilton on the property at Fullerton Cove and see what resembles a shearing shed. Recently listed in Domain’s Australia’s 10 Best Houses of 2016, on entering the home, a visitor immediately gets a sense of why this home has won so many awards in its short lifespan. The architecturally designed home is essentially two symmetrical tin sheds linked by a corridor with verandas to enjoy the outdoors. In an exclusive interview with Medowie News Of The Area, Mr Hamilton said, “It

is a rare occurrence when an architect and a builder get on.” And just as well, because the architect, Mr Hamilton’s son, Managing Director at SHAC Architects, Mr Justin Hamilton designed the house specifically to meet his father’s needs, right down to extending the back room for his collection of model tractors. With bespoke ceiling panels made from recycled timber, personal nostalgia items such as the early 20th century drenching gun, and a handmade wooden tractor panel displayed in a niche at the entrance show what thoughtfulness went in to the one-of-a-kind design. Mr Hamilton is proud of the family involvement in the

build saying, “The house has an input of three generations, my grand-daughter was responsible for the fittings, my daughter-in-law selected the lights, and my son was the architect who designed the house.” Mr Hamilton is humble about his prize-winning home saying, “The only reason I’m thrilled is because my son designed it.” “He fashioned it around my life.” The house took just on 12 months to build by Peter Doody Constructions and was entirely hand built on site. Mr Hamilton said, “Nothing arrived pre-made, not even the steel beams. Everything was made in my shed.”

Palmer’s Mayoral Ambitions

Visioneering the future of Medowie as the perfect place to raise a family and to do business. By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Ryan Palmer visited Medowie this week with his small children to look around and chat to residents.

AS Port Stephens prepares to head to the polls on 9 September, a new contender has this week thrown his hat in the ring, and announced his intention to run for the position of Mayor and East Ward Councillor of Port Stephens Council. Ryan Palmer, President of the Tomaree Business Chamber, made his announcement this week, and has hit the campaign trail with force. Ryan is married, with two young children, and actively involved in many and varied sports and community programs across Port Stephens. Ryan spoke with News Of The Area about his interest in ensuring Medowie is given adequate attention in the

next Council sitting term. “I am extremely excited to work with the Medowie Community over the coming months and listen to how I can support and grow the community.” “As a father of two young children I am always looking towards creating a better future for the next generation.” “Medowie is such a fantastic place to raise children and we need to keep looking at how we can enhance facilities for families,” he said. Medowie residents took to social media this week, voicing their concerns and fears of Medowie being ‘left behind’ with worries of a new Council only focusing on the Nelson Bay and tourist precinct. Ryan Palmer told News

Of The Area he has fielded calls and discussion already from Medowie residents about this very issue, and is focused on ensuring that a Council under his direction would not leave Medowie behind. “Medowie is one of the top growth areas in Port Stephens and the Hunter, as identified in the Hunter Regional Plan. With this in mind, I will ensure that Medowie gets the investment and services it deserves.” “Port Stephens is just not about Tourism, our largest industry is actually manufacturing.” “Medowie is in such a strategic and important location, and I will ensure that investment is spread right across Port Stephens,” he said. Dear Jasminda,

My husband has started shaving his legs. Should I be concerned? Mrs KL, Ferodale Mrs KL, there are men out there with very well-defined, muscular calves. These fine examples of athleticism unfortunately rarely see the light of day due to the pelt of hair that hides their true magnificence. If you’ve got it, flaunt it, as the saying goes. Also, we live in an age where hair from the neck down seems to be viewed by anyone under 25 as a vile and vulgar defect. I’m guessing that your husband is over this age, so let me ask a couple of questions to narrow things down a bit. You just have to answer A or B for each (do it silently if your husband is sitting close by). Number one: A. My husband recently bought a 10-speed racing bike or B. My husband recently bought a Mimco bag. Number two: My husband cries when his team loses the football or B. My husband cries when Gwyneth Paltrow wears yellow. Finally, three: A. My husband borrows my car or B. My husband borrows my pantyhose. Now, let’s be clear, I am not judging one way or another. I actually think man B sounds like a lot more fun (and probably more economically viable). Regardless of the outcome, if he is a man who, post-shave, removes his hair from the sink or the bath then you are in luck, Mrs KL. Be thankful for small and smooth mercies. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

guide our schools this year in healthy lifestyle and sports competition endeavours. Wirreanda Public School has four sports houses: Anulka, Banaroo, Coorama and Kinarra. The Sports House Captains and Vice-Captains for 2017 are Max, Logan, Bailey, Liam, Nick, Jake, Eddie, Kimrena, Grace, Claire, Hunter, Holly, Isabella and Eden. Sports captains play an important role in motivating other students and promoting a healthy lifestyle, not just because a healthy lifestyle has enormous benefits, but because sports captains are in a better position than most to influence the younger age groups at their school. teacher, Mrs Corynne Darcy, told News Of The Area, “Sports captains have a very important role within our school, and one that is not to be down played.” “They are responsible for encouraging all children of all abilities and ages to give everything a try, teaching sports chants and leading their chant performances at events.” “They are expected to be role models not only in wonderful sportsmanship, but also by demonstrating excellent team spirit to the younger students,” she said. Good luck to the Wirreanda Public School Sports Captains and ViceCaptains for 2017. News Of The Area wishes you all the best as you support and encourage your fellow students.

q Mr Peter Hosking, new Head Teacher of PDHPE at Irrawang High School.

IRRAWANG High School farewelled their much-loved PDHPE teacher Mr Turner last year, and knew they were big sports shoes to fill. Those shoes have been filled, and the new wearer of these shoes and the new Head Teacher PDHPE is Mr Peter Hosking. Mr Hosking has previously taught at Callaghan College, Wallsend and Waratah campuses, and was involved with Talented Athlete Programs for students at Girri Girri Sports Academy for Indigenous Students and the Bourke Clontarf Academy, both in Western NSW. Mr Hosking’s personal sporting background has predominantly been tennis, which he has been coaching for twenty years. He was also involved with touch football, golf and cricket as both a player and coach. He is the current Hunter Schools Sport Australia Girls Cricket convener and manager. Mr Hosking has many exciting plans for a new sports program at school this year including CHS Sporting

Mission Accomplished By Jo FINN

THE first thing you notice about John Coutis is certainly not what you remember him by. When John was born he was “the size of a drink bottle” and his legs were rendered useless. The doctors told his parents that he was going to die. As John, now 47, made abundantly clear to the enthralled students at St Michael’s Primary School, “I love it when the doctors get it wrong.” Thirty years ago, John

made the choice to have his legs amputated, seeing them as a hindrance. Now his mode of transport is a pretty cool skateboard or his strong upper limbs. He is definitely not a man defined by what is missing. “I have no legs, but that doesn’t make me any different to you on the inside,” he said. It was the similarities that enamoured John to his audience, along with a wicked sense of humour. Despite experiencing an education marked by bullying and ostracism, John realised at age 10, when he was on stage dressed as

Humpty Dumpty, that he had discovered his life’s ambition. “I knew I wanted to be on stage for the rest of my life.” “I actually wanted to be a stand-up comedian, but I can’t stand up,” he deadpanned. John’s golden rule is to treat others the way you expect to be treated. “Take responsibility for your actions,” he said. “Be the best you can be.” John certainly follows his own advice. Today he travels the world and shares his motivational message with thousands. He has met world leaders including Nelson Mandela,

competitions, Newcastle and Hunter Sport Gala Days, Swimming (competitors only), Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals, lunchtime sporting competitions and school sport within the local community. In 2018 Mr Hosking will also be implementing a number of endeavours and programs at Irrawang High School. These will include the Partner Primary School Transition Gala Days (run by Year 9/10 PASS classes) House V House Sporting competitions, Whole School Swimming Carnival, Sport Specific Physical Activity and Sports Studies electives, inter-school competition with Hunter/Port Stephens schools and Swim and Survive program for year 7 students (2017 Term 4). An Irrawang High School representative told News Of The Area, “There are exciting times ahead for our school sports program, and it is wonderful to see” “Mr Hosking has fitted in so well to the fabric of our great school, and we look forward to see what he has in store for us.”

who once sat on the floor with John and talked about goal setting. He is also an avid fishing enthusiast and loves scuba diving. One bold St Michael’s student asked, “Do you wish you had legs?” John reflected on watching his brothers play rugby league and said, “I wanted to be just like them, at times I got pretty sad.” But he was quick to turn it around, just like he turned around any misconceptions about surface appearances. “Instead of worrying about what you can’t do, think about what you can do,” John said.

Heartbeats raise heart rates By Rachael VAUGHAN

HEART Beats fitness group is raising heart rates and promoting healthy lifestyle changes in people of all ages. The group has been running for fifteen years in Medowie, and has had steady attendance the entire time. Group members are led by their passionate teacher, Elizabeth Hamilton. With our nation finally sitting up and taking notice of the importance of mental health as well as physical health, this fitness provides an invaluable service to people in Medowie and beyond. The Heart Beats group has seen many members forge lifelong friendships and support networks. They meet to work on their physical health, but have found the group gives them so much more. The group regularly organises social evenings

and events together, and are often spotted after their Friday class, enjoying a cuppa and a chat at Sportz Cafe at Medowie Sports Centre. One Heart Beats member, Rick Porter, told News Of The Area, “We don’t just come for the physical health class, this group is so much more.” “At any age, it is so important to keep an

active social life and to take care of your mental health.” “Being a part of this group does that for the members, and so much more,” he said. Another member, Libby Dingle, told News Of The Area, “Any age or fitness level is welcome to join us, and anyone will find they feel comfortable here.”

“The changes in people from when they first began attending are amazing.” The energetic group have three sessions a week, and attendees can choose to attend one, or all three. Classes are held at the Medowie Community Hall on Monday, Tuesday and Friday for an hour class at 9am.

Waste Not, Want Not WHILE most councils are offering a green bin service to recycle green waste, Port Stephens Council will remain with its two bin system unchanged. According to Council’s Waste Management Coordinator, Aaron Malloy, green waste has been recycled in Port Stephens since 1999 through an advanced resource recovery technology. “Residents in Port Stephens can be assured that 100% of green waste and food waste in the Local Government Area are recycled without the need for a green bin”, he explained. Items accepted in the red garbage bin include: • food scraps •non-recyclable packaging, eg plastic bags • green waste • nappies • broken household items

that cannot be reused or fixed • used pizza boxes, other paper, cardboard, and aluminium foil with food residuals. Currently, approximately 50 percent of the waste in the red bin is diverted from landfill. Council offers residents free green waste drop off days at Raymond Terrace, Karuah, Lemon Tree Passage and Salamander Bay for excess waste. Residents can also place out green waste to be picked up through the on call kerbside collection. Residents who want the third bin for their green waste can organise an additional red bin. For any information on Council’s garbage service, collection dates and bin etiquette, visit www. portstephens.nsw.gov.au.
