Grainger: Jimmy’s needs attention By Margie TIERNEY WHILE hundreds of people have flocked to Jimmy’s Beach in Hawks Nest over the holiday period, the beach itself is not faring well. Erosion along the Boulevarde at Winda Woppa has reached its trigger point. The new Sand Transfer System is still under construction with trials scheduled to take place in April. “The project is being closely monitored by the State Government OEH Department and will provide considerable cost savings over the next 20 years,”Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger said. The Winda Woppa Association says the pinch point is a long way past the “trigger” point of ten metres of sand buffer and any further severe events will cause significant issues. The Association says MidCoast Council still has sand stockpiled and funding supplied by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage for

On Saturday night 5 January Police were called to a man in trouble on the oyster leases opposite the Anchorage in Hawks Nest. Police say the man had been thrown from a boat and hit by the prop and needed medical treatment in John Hunter Hospital for severe lacerations. By Margie TIERNEY RAFFLES can be the lifeblood of community groups, providing much needed funds to keep them afloat, however in recent weeks, there’s been confusion and angst, because of a new system of booking space on footpaths or areas, owned or managed by MidCoast Council. President of the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Motor Club, Juergen Seil said, “The recent change to an electronic booking system is an absolute disaster and very poorly implemented.” For the past 16 years, any group wishing to book a space to sell raffle tickets or promote a community group, dropped into the MidCoast Council office in Tea Gardens and lodged their name, time and event and location required in a master book. Now it’s all done online as part of the Council’s Vibrant Spaces initiative. The system generates a Permit to the group wanting the space after checking that it’s available. One of the most popular raffle areas is outside the Hawks Nest Newsagency. Owner Hugo Elsterman has been happy to oblige community organisations as long as they didn’t set up outside the Post Office boxes. Jeurgen Seil is calling on Council to advise every Club in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area about the new booking system, so there’s no more confusion or confrontation when several groups turn up to the same location on the same day. Mr Seil says they’ve lost more than $500 in revenue over the past couple of weeks, money they can ill afford to lose ahead of this year’s Motorfest in March even though they did the

right thing by registering with Vibrant Spaces and had a Permit. News Of The Area spoke to MidCoast Council and was told that they would be looking into fine tuning the Vibrant Space

In 2012 the Australian Government commenced a digital health record system known as My Health Record. In May 2017, the Government announced that the system would transition into an ‘optout’ basis, rather than ‘optin’ due to a lack of uptake. This means that unless they opt out by 31 January 2019, every Australian (including children) now has a My Health Record. This includes your health information such as healthcare providers you have seen, treatments you have received, and medicines you have been prescribed.

All children and young people will have a My Health Record unless their parent has opted-out for them

before 31 January 2019. In most cases any person with parental responsibility (as determined by Medicare) for a child can be authorised to access the child’s My Health Record. This raises concerns for families at risk of family violence. For example, where a parent and children have escaped violence, their location is often unknown; however by accessing the child’s My Health Record, the perpetrator of the violence may discover the whereabouts of the parent and children, and location of their treating health practitioners. This is an unforeseen, but very real, risk which should be considered by parents before the 31 January 2019 deadline.

Comparatively Graffiti-Free IF you’ve noticed our region is comparatively graffiti-free, there’s a very good reason – we have a reporting hotline plus our own super volunteer Graffiti-buster in the form of Ted Bickford and his band of youth volunteers. After 25 years on the job, Ted’s been taking a well-earned break recently, but thanks to his training programs, a band of young volunteers stepped up to the plate in December, removing graffiti from over 27 sites across the Great Lakes area. “The first day I took off, there were 19 calls to the Graffiti hotline alone,” says Ted. “I do think there’s been a drop-off in calls while I’ve been away – and that’s probably due to the truck not being on the road,” he says. “People see the truck and it reminds them to call in graffiti.” There’s a team of young volunteers who Ted has developed, from high schools, juvenile correction orders and a pool of willing contributors from the general community who have stepped up this summer to help Ted out. Enter local heroes Lenai Cunningham and Manning Leon – who’ve been volunteering their time for two to three days each week removing graffiti from all over the southern part of the region. “Helping out fills my free time,” says Lenai. “It helps Ted out while he takes a break and graffiti is ugly – so removing it quickly is good for our community.” Manning drives the graffiti truck and is

Bridges a Focus of Council

BRIDGES are a big focus of MidCoast Council’s Capital Works Program 2018/19, with 15 separate bridge projects either completed, currently underway or in the pipeline for 2019. The Capital Works Program is part of Council’s commitment to delivering a connected MidCoast community and improving the condition, safety and durability of our transport network. At the December Council meeting, Councillors were given an update on the status of projects within the works program, which includes bridges, cycleways, urban and regional road rehabilitation, sand transfers and boat ramp upgrades. The extensive and diverse list of projects being undertaken across the region is managed by the Projects and Engineering team. “The 2018/19 Capital Works Program has been designed to focus on transport routes that connect the MidCoast community, and with over 500 bridges in our region they feature heavily in our schedule. This is where the greatest risks are and that’s why it is our priority,” said Rob Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director Engineering and Infrastructure. “All works are going well for this time of the year and we’re committed to ensuring the program continues that way throughout 2019.” The management and coordination of such an extensive program involves consultation with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Each project requires different levels of community consultation and a tender process before it can begin. The Capital Works program is part of MidCoast Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the region. learning from Lenai which of their biodegradable chemicals to use on each surface, to quickly remove graffiti as soon as it appears. “It can be hard work,” Lenai says. “Each tag can take up to an hour of scrubbing to remove.” Her Dad minds her pre-schooler while she gets the job done. The two, along with a group of other volunteers, are unsung heroes in our community, to whom we all owe a vote of thanks, but they are not singing their own praises. “Ted’s a good teacher. A a man of the community,” says Manning. Art Tribute to mark 25th Anniversary By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Myall Art and Craft Centre knew they were in for a great weekend, when people started arriving for their annual Art Show before the doors were open last Friday morning. “There were people waiting to come in on day one,” Coordinator Christine Baker said. The annual three day Art and Craft show takes months in the planning and days to set up, all the

rooms of the Centre on Myall Street in Tea Gardens open to the public. “We had a record 145 paintings this year and the quality was very high,” Coordinator Christine Baker said. “There were also a lot more photographic entries. “Everything was for sale and it was all hand crafted, or painted,” Christine said. There was a huge array of craft items on show and for sale, from pottery, leather work, wood

turning, hand spun and woven garments, hand sewn and knitted children’s clothing and soft toys and a wonderful selection of hand and machined quilts.” This was a very special Art Show for local Joan Wilcox, who was one of the five founding members of the group, 25 years ago. To celebrate the milestone, Joan was given a very special hand crafted visitors’ book, signed by all those who walked through the door last weekend. Christine said, “It was a surprise for Joan and she was absolutely thrilled.”
