Eleven, Eleven, Eleven By Margie TIERNEY WORLD War 1 was supposed to be the ‘War to end all Wars’ but a century on, our Australian Military Forces are still on peacekeeping duties around the world. This coming Remembrance Day on Sunday 11 November will mark 100 years since the end of the Great War, one of the biggest conflicts in history and one which claimed over 60 thousand Australian lives. Back then, Australia’s population was fewer than 5 million but a staggering 416,809 enlisted to go to war in faraway lands for King and Country. In honour of those

The coveted Scroll of Honour was presented to Michael at a recent star-studded event held in Auckland, New Zealand. The Scroll of Honour is in recognition of Michael’s valued contributions as an internationally recognised musician, songwriter, musical arranger, and producer. The Scroll of Honour celebrates Michael’s passion, achievements and his unwavering dedication

with hundreds of school children carrying either photos of ex servicemen and women or a flag,” Tea Gardens RSL Vice President Scott Beaumont told News Of The Area. “There will be a motorcade of ex servicemen and women and all our community to the entertainment industry. Throughout a career spanning 40 years, Michael has been the recipient of many entertainment Awards which include: ‘’The Grand Prix” in the Pacific Song Contest (Canada), the “Outstanding Song Award” in the Yamaha Song Festival (Tokyo), the “APRA Silver Scroll” (twice) for Best Song Composition, an “International Gold CLIO” (New York) for Best Music Soundtrack for a television commercial – the accolades go on! The prestigious Variety Artist Club Scroll of Honour is a career highlight. Michael has been Musical Director for many of Australia and

groups, including the Red Cross, Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Surf Lifesavers and Rural Fire Service have been invited to join the march that follows.” The March will culminate at Anzac Park on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens for the traditional ‘minute silence’ at 11am followed by an address from Rear Admiral

New Zealand’s renowned entertainers including Julie Anthony, John Rowles, Rob Guest, The Seekers and Kamahl. Michael has accompanied International stars such as Neil Sedaka, Cleo Laine and was the conductor for the original boy from Oz himself, Peter Allen. The musical directing talent of Michael Harvey was enjoyed by Australian television audiences at Christmas (from 1995 to 2006) when listening to ‘’Carols in the Domain’’. Michael was guest Musical Director on the television show “Midday with Kerri-Anne”. The West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Youth Orchestra and members of the

The moving version of the Australian National Anthem, ‘’Advance Australia Fair’’, sung by Julie Anthony and orchestrated by Tommy Tycho was produced by Michael Harvey. Michael has been a lecturer and tutor in Performing Arts, Piano, Composition and Songwriting where his pupils included Delta Goodrem and Natalie Bassingthwaighte. One would think that after 40 years on, the energy for all things music would have subsided but Michael, a resident of Tea Gardens, has recently written and recorded a new album, ‘’A Quiet Journey’’, which he states is, ‘’a reawakening, discovering new things about myself, following new pursuits and enjoying what I do.’’ Michael and his wife Jill, (herself an accomplished entertainer) are continuing to share their passion for music to sell-out concerts that range from the classics to jazz. Audiences are drawn into the passion and talent that is maestro Michael Harvey. The Scroll of Honour says it all - Thank you for the music!

CanTeen Youngsters visit By Margie TIERNEY

LOCAL businesses in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens recently joined forces to ensure a group of youngsters from the children’s Charity, ‘CanTeen’ were given a holiday weekend they’ll long remember. The weekend was part of their ongoing activity camps, programs aimed at creating friendships, team building and of course lots of fun. “The group stayed at the Reflections Holiday Park in Hawks Nest and took part in

various water based activities,” James Blizzard from Ezy Kayaks said. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to assist in making the weekend memorable for the group,” James said. “It’s these sorts of activities that help to build resilience for these young people that have either suffered from or been affected by Cancer in their lives.” The children’s Charity CanTeen delivers a range of support services, including specialist treatments, peer

support and online and face-toface counselling. The group was supervised by CanTeen Staff and volunteers including Robyn Leacy, Ashley Manney and Jess Skinner. “Over the weekend local businesses were generous to the group with their donations,” James said. “Benchmark on Booner supplied the breakfast on Saturday morning, the Tea Gardens Hotel donated Pizzas for the lunch on Sunday and Tea Gardens Kombucha supplied boxes of drinks for the thirsty group,” James said.

“It just illustrates how generous these businesses are with their time and getting involved.” Ezy Kayaks has also been raising funds during October for Bandanna Day which happens on Friday 26 October. Each Bandanna costs just $5.00 and all money goes directly to ‘Canteen’. Bandannas can be bought at Ezy Kayaks launch site in Moira Parade, Hawks Nest, Hugo’s Newsagency in Hawks Nest or by calling Ezy Kayaks on 0414 337 246.

S 7(1) of the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW) sets out a general prohibition to a person using a listening device to record a private conversation to which the person is a party. Section 7(3) of the Surveillance Devices Act sets out exceptions to the operation of s 7(1), so that the general prohibition does not apply on particular conditions. In a recent case, a mother’s lawyers sought to have a recording admitted as evidence and relied on one of the exceptions. They argued the mother was a principal party to a conversation and consented to the listening device recording the conversation because it was reasonably necessary for the protection of her lawful interests. The reason for the material was that it was evidence of family violence in circumstances where the father denied such family violence, and where family violence often occurs largely behind closed doors and in

this particular instance, on an isolated property. The judge found that the substantiation of private violence may be key to determining not only what occurred during the isolated incident, but more broadly in the context of what followed the incident. The importance of substantiation of such claims meant that it was reasonably necessary for the mother to make the recording in the particular circumstances of her case, because it protected her against the inadequacy of proof which might otherwise be available to her, particularly in circumstances where it is proof of a contested factual incident. Without substantiation there was the potential denial of her lawful interests for protection against violence, which meant that the step of recording was reasonably necessary. The judge therefore determined that the recording was not unlawfully obtained.

Bitou Busters Take A Break Local Bitou Buster volunteers celebrated the end of another season’s work with a barbecue

By Adrienne INGRAM

LOCAL Bitou Buster volunteers celebrated the end of another season’s work with a barbecue. The group worked the morning on the dunes and bush off Sanderling Road, Hawks Nest, removing asparagus weed and bitou bush. Both are major threats to

NSW coastal ecosystems Bitou bush is from South Africa and was planted to stabilise dunes along the NSW coast between 1946 and 1968. It spread rapidly invading native habitat coastal heathlands, grasslands, woodlands and forests, smothering areas and destroying the habitat for native animals. Asparagus was

introduced to Australia as an ornamental plant, but it grows fast and thick covering the ground and preventing germination of native plants. The Bitou Busters work monthly in several areas around Hawks Nest during the cooler months from March to October, and their end-of-season barbecue was held as usual at the home of

the group’s coordinator Jill Madden and husband Peter Madden. Jill thanked the more than 30 people – the volunteers and their partners - for their hard work in keeping the bitou bush and asparagus fern at bay. She also encouraged the group to visit the areas of work over the summer season to appreciate their work. The Bitou Busters will be back on the job in March next year to continue the seemingly endless work of clearing noxious weeds from the local area.

Christmas Campaign By Margie TIERNEY TEA Gardens Library has come on board this year to help promote the ‘It’s In The Bag’ Christmas campaign run by the ‘Share the Dignity’ Charity. Local mother of two, Jodie Genner has been the driving force behind ‘Share the Dignity’ in the Tea Gardens area for the past two years. “Our first Christmas we received 95 handbags, last

year 105, this year we want to reach 135,” Jodie told News Of The Area. ‘It’s In The Bag’ gives women or girls experiencing homelessness or poverty a very special gift at Christmas. It’s a simple concept. All you have to do is choose a handbag that’s in good condition that you no longer use and fill it with items that would make a woman feel special and shows that someone cares. “It could be filled with personal hygiene products, shampoos, deodorants, maybe a mascara or a scarf, a

book to read over Christmas, something that’s a bit special but doesn’t cost the earth,” Jodie said. Librarian Carol Johnson was only too happy to give over a cabinet in the library to show off the handbags and personal care items already donated by Mumm’s on the Myall Restaurant owner Jenna Menzies. The campaign runs from Friday 16 November through to Sunday 2 December and all donations can be dropped off at the Century 21 Real Estate Office on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens.

Bradbury Moment Inspires Councillors By Margie TIERNEY A DELEGATION of MidCoast Councillors has just returned from their annual NSW Local Government conference held last week in the border town of Albury. Mayor David West was joined by Councillors Len Roberts, Karen Hutchinson, Troy Fowler, Claire Pontin and Peter Epov for the three day meeting. Councillor Len Roberts told News Of The Area, “The keynote speaker was Steven Bradbury of ‘Last Man Standing’ fame, a former short track speed skater and four-time Olympian.” Steven Bradbury won the 1,000m event at the 2002 Winter Olympics, after all of his opponents were involved in a last corner pile-up. Len Roberts said, “He explained that the winning of a Gold Medal was not just 20 seconds of luck, but years of perseverance overcoming very serious accidents (one

race almost costing him his life) and still being there when it mattered.” “His story was extremely inspirational and encouraging apart from discussion on matters such as right to farm policies, equitable rating systems, Crown Land management, strategic land use and funding for infrastructure,” Councillor Roberts said. “It was also an opportunity to share ideas and get a sense of what was happening in the city and smaller rural councils.” “I was particularly pleased that the Premier spoke fondly of the reception she received from the people at the Tea Gardens Police Station event.” “Ms Berejiklian remarked how friendly the people were and was looking forward to coming back soon.”

Reaping the Rewards By Margie TIERNEY THE community is still reaping the benefits from this year’s Myall River Festival held on Saturday 13 October on the Tea Gardens

waterfront. Tea Gardens Public School Principal Mark Clemson was very happy to receive a cheque for $250, part of the proceeds of a Festival raffle sponsored by Ray White’s

Stuart Sinclair. “This will be very handy to expand our digital technology at the school,” Mark Clemson said. Another $250 was donated to the Hawks Nest Boxing Gym run by Senior Constable Rob Wylie for our local youngsters. 300 tickets were sold for the prize of a bright yellow push bike, complete with basket. The lucky winners were locals Ian and Sam Leggatt. ‘The Clinic Bus’ was also a big winner on the day of the Myall River Festival. Just over $700 was raised for the non-Government funded service, thanks to the efforts of Principal Clemson, Casey Connell and Tea Garden’s Real Estate’s Dylan Tennyson who were all happy to give their time on the day of

Banks at the Tavern By Rachael VAUGHAN SUNDAY afternoon is looking cruisy, with Anna Bay Tavern setting the scene for a perfect relaxing music of smooth tunes and cool

refreshments. Justin Banks hits the stage at 3pm, and promises to provide the perfect end to the weekend. Justin was the lead vocalist in the International

Award winning band, “Sonamulate” from 2005 to 2009. He was the only person to have won multiple consecutive International songwriting competitions

with his unsigned EP album “Sleepwalking through life”. Justin left a 10 year stint in the music industry to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking, where he has had great success, particularly in his most recent film “Hero” starring John Jarratt from Wolf Creek and Play School fame. Justin spent 7 years

working for the Roland Corporation Australia, where he learned the ins and outs of digital musical instruments. With this knowledge and experience, he has taken solo artistry to another level entirely with his majestic harmonic vocals and clever use of loop pedals and vocal enhancers on stage. He covers a broad

repertoire of artists, leaving not a musical genre stone unturned. From Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles, right through to Kings of Leon and Pete Murray. Justin Banks’s set is bound to offer something for everyone, in the perfect Sunday afternoon ambience of Anna Bay Tavern.

Big Cake Bake raised $1,500 By Margie TIERNEY

at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre, would never happen if not for the hard work of the Red Cross delivering tables laden with delicious homemade treats. “We would like to humbly thank our local community for their generous support with the donation of tasty homemade baking goods and spending up a storm, so we were nearly sold out,” Helen Janes from the Red Cross said. The Big Cake Bake raised $1,500 while a raffle added another $250 to the coffers. Money raised will go to the Red Cross Appeal to help people caught up in the double disaster, of the earthquake and tsunami

which struck the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi, leaving thousands dead and many more homeless. And it should be noted that long time member Jenny Kelly was recently acknowledged for her volunteer work. Jenny was awarded the Emma Geelan Trophy at a special meeting in Sydney for her ongoing support of the Breakfast Club at Tea Gardens Public School. A humble Jenny Kelly said, “I feel pleased to be recognised, but stress this Award also belongs to the many other people helping in this important function of the Red Cross.”

This year Stroud held the NSW Championships which saw competitors from down south to far north QLD come to compete. We also experienced record number of entries in both the Campdraft event and Rodeo. The Stroud Rodeo had the opportunity to align with the WCRA (World Championship Rodeo Alliance), giving competitors in the open an opportunity to nominate to compete in the USA in their chosen event.

Annette Baldwin, Secretary of the Stroud Rodeo and Campdraft, told News Of The Area, “We had twenty athletes nominate and five qualified to go straight to semi-finals held in Guthrie Ok in November 2018.” “Congratulations to Ben Lees, Emma Thompson, Heath Nichols, Jason Carlon and Travis Wheatley, because they now have the opportunity to compete for big prize money in their nominated events.” This year saw an increase in prize money and buckles up for grabs for those competing and being successful on the weekend. The event enables donations to various Charities which have exceeded $500,000 since its inception - including HMRI, Stroud Lodge and other localised Charities. Annette said, “If it wasn’t for the local communities and support we get through donations and volunteers, we would not have an event where everyone works together in a very close group and supports each other.”

OPINION

WHEN it comes time to sell your small acreage or farm, most of the same rules apply to a Residential sale. It’s mainly just on a larger scale. Probably the biggest issues I have, experiencing Rural Sales presentation, is that with acreage there are sometimes lots of old pieces of machinery/hardware lying around. I understand that these are usually handy to have at some point, for spare parts and repairs, but when it comes time to sell, either get rid of them or store them neatly away. Trust me when I say that your buyer can not see past them. They will see your property as poorly kept and unattractive. This is the last thing you want as they will want to pay less for it if anything at all. Another item that’s truly important is the grounds of the property. Have them slashed so that they are park like. This will appeal visually to your buyer. It will also enable your agent & buyers to walk or drive around the paddocks freely, thus having a better viewing. Hope this helps. Denise.

My 18-year-old daughter has just let me know that she is pregnant. She and the boyfriend recently bought a cat and then left it with me when they moved out, so that shows her level of commitment. I’m worried. Besides, I’m only 39. I feel I’m too young to take this on. Yours truly, Mr PM, Boat Harbour Dear Mr PM, or should I call you Grandpa? WELL, this is a fine old state of affairs. There you were encouraging the boyfriend over friendly cricket matches, and meanwhile he was hitting home runs with your princess. There are positives to being a young mum, though I can’t for the life of me remember what they are because I’ve suffered sleep deprivation since the age of 19. Did you not give her the doll that cries and wees and vomits when she was in her formative years? Did you not take her to cafes where screaming babies ruin everyone’s flat white and smashed avocado? Did you not show her images of mindless mothers playing Candy Crush because their brains are so fried? How about some birthing videos in slow motion with the Psycho soundtrack in the background for good measure? But don’t worry too much, Pop, or should I call you Pa or Gramps? You have not lost a daughter, you have gained a son . . . oh, and a baby. Well done, you. And the best part is, when she realises what a hard gig this parenting caper is, she’ll probably be spending a lot more time at your joint. There’s a plus. Or else she’ll just drop the little treasure to your house and go back to being a teenager again while you walk the hallways singing lullabies. Ah, the pitter patter of tiny feet is truly a joy for all to behold, but mostly the grandparents. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

Jewfish make a Run NIGHT-time fishing in shallow water paid dividends for family friends David Kirk and Regan Lilley. The dynamic duo nailed their bag limit of quality jewfish up to 20kg on successive outings recently. They were also busted up by bigger fish. That’s not all! In amongst the larger fish they caught a good haul of bream, Gummy

shark and flathead. They also hooked more than their fair share of stingrays which became something of a pest to the seasoned anglers. They were generous in revealing details of their success. According to Regan, they fished on the western side of Middle Island on the top of the tide. Squid was the ace bait and they used a double hooked rig.

Locals can do worse than to fish in the Passage at Lemon Tree itself as large jewfish sometimes lurk in and around the Marina. They have been known to gill up in crab traps in the Passage and a deep hole on the right hand side just outside the entrance channel is worth a try for those wishing to wet a line in the slack water at night.

Newcastle District Annis Young Competition Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS

MONDAY 22nd October: Robyn Beaumont and myself travelled to Raymond Terrace for Round 1 of Newcastle District Annis Young Competition. There were 31 competitors in this Consistency Competition which is held annually. Robyn and I qualified for this event by reaching the final in our club competition. Sadly, due to the luck of the draw, (or bad luck for me), Robyn and I had to bowl against each other the loser is “knocked out” of the competition. After 27 ends Robyn reached

the required 150 shots while I only scored 116. On Tuesday Robyn bowled at Heaton Birmingham Gardens, 2 games to be played, she won both of these. Wednesday was a rest day then the semi final was contested on Thursday at Merewether Bowling Club. Unfortunately Robyn lost this contest to Melissa (Missy) Witt from Nelson Bay 153 v 137, Missy went on to gain 2nd place. The competition was won by Adele Pearson from Soldiers Point. Congratulations Robyn on gaining 3rd place, a great achievement. Tuesday 23rd October: Social bowls as usual format for play 3 games of triples

and a game of Fours. Prior to play President Robyn Webster welcomed our newest member Jan Coomer. It appeared Beverly Thrift, Julie Kennedy and Karen McPhie were going to be winners in their contest against Francis Betar, Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts. The score on the 5th end 8 to 0. Thankfully Maynie’s team rallied claiming victory by 4 shots, 18 v 14. A good win for Jan Coomer, Pam Gilchrist and Sandra Leisemann 20 v Sheril Johnson, Carolyn Bywater and Karen Green 13. In the Fours Judi Polak, Dorothy Thompson, Bette Saillard and Deyonne Page demolished Ingrid Luck, Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Lynne Green 24 v 6. An evenly matched contest against Dawn May, Lily Smith and Dale Winter 17 v Jean Glover, Jeanette Emmett and Pat Baker 15. The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Judi, Dorothy, Bette and Deyonne. The winner of the voucher for the Myall Bistro and Café was Pat Baker. Many thank to them for supporting our club with the raffle prize. Thursday 25th October: What a great turn up of bowlers for our fun Thursday bowls. Everyone’s a winner on Thursdays, 12 ends of bowls for $5 a great chance to “have a go”, improve your game. Good to see Francis Betar playing Skip. Three games of Triples was played, Ingrid Luck “swinger” lead in one game. Results are as follows Bev Dunn, Dorothy Thompson and

Remembrance Day November 11 2018

Lest We Forget

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. On November 11 1918, at 11am, the guns fell silent on the Western Front (Belgium and France) and more than four years of bloody warfare was ended. Over 400,000 Australians enlisted in the First World War – roughly 60,000 never returned home. The First World War was also the first time that those killed in action were not repatriated home to Australia. This changed the nature of honouring their lives and grieving their loss profoundly – making such services as Remembrance Day even more important and symbolic. On Remembrance Day we remember the fallen – but we remember with equal sorrow those who returned battered and scarred from their service; “In War there are no unwounded soldiers” (Jose Narosky). At Peter Sinclair Gardens we will be commemorating Remembrance Day in the following way: Where: 2 Mirreen Street, Hawks Nest NSW 2324 Date: Wednesday, 7 November 2018 Time: 10:00am You are warmly invited to attend our service, as are members of our local community. By Margie TIERNEY IF you’re looking for some great action in the water, head to Bennetts Beach at Hawks Nest this Saturday for one of the biggest days on the surf club calendar. “November 3, sees the second round of the Streets Surf Boat races coming to our own Bennetts Beach,” Peter Rogers told News Of The Area. “Our local crews will be taking on the best from the Central Coast and Newcastle including our Open Men’s crew racing against last year’s Australian representative crew from Avoca Beach.” “It will be a great

spectacle and awesome to see our own Hawks Nests crews so competitive against the best in NSW,” Peter said. The skills of the surfboat rowers will certainly be on show. Peter said, “Outside of the Australian Crew, the Ocean Beach Whoo Ha Ha, Silver medallists at last year’s Australian Titles in Perth, will be leading the women’s battle, while even the Masters crews are dominated by Australian championship medallist rowers.” From under 19’s, both ladies and men, through to Opens and Masters, there will be all divisions of surfboat racing on show including our

present Under/19 and Open Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Hunter Branch representative crews. Action commences at 9am and is scheduled to go until 1pm. Peter added, “There will be great viewing from the beach and the Surf Club veranda where everyone is welcome and the bar will open at the conclusion of the racing.”
